I just got done reading Chapter 99 when Luffy is about to be killed by Buggy & lightning hit Buggy & broke Luffy Free…..well Luffy said he was going to die, my question is, why didn't he just punch the thing he was trapped in, he can punch easily through stone, why not just break the thing & in addition to that, use his Gomu powqers to hit Buggy. Was it just cause Oda wanted it to be more funny or something? There are alot of possibilities for Luffy to have escaped.
Why couldn't?

I think the whole point was to show that Luffy had no fear of death. He probably felt that if there was a place to be executed, the same platform that Gol D. Roger was executed on wasn't so bad.
-
I also felt it was pretty dumb for the "I'm not gonna die" guy to give up so easily, but hey, it happened.
-
Yeah you pointed out another great point, the guy never gives up, but I guess Cosmic makes a good point, though it's sorta dumb to clearly contradict his own stregnth.
-
Yeah, it does seem a little dumb, but like you said, it happened, whaddya gonna do about it?
-
That whole scene was weird.
Not only was Luffy acting weird but there was that whole 'It's his fate' thing…. and then there was the lighting...
-
Yeah, it was all really dumb.
-
Well, I didn't really think it was all that dumb, just rather surreal.
-
Er stupid question alert What's surreal mean?
-
Surreal-exagerrated imagery used to express inner emotions, so dreamy in a sense.
It could have been Oda's way of putting in symbolism I guess. And plus, some of Smoker's character was revealed through his analyzation of the incident, so I wouldn't say it was completely dumb.
-
Er stupid question alert What's surreal mean?
It means sort of odd and dreamlike. Like Surreal art style: think of Salvador Dali.
-
surreal - it is like a distorted reality. Events don't feel real and can sometimes be likened to a dreamlike state where everything is magnified.
EDIT: aah you beat me CosmicDebris. Anyway I do agree that 'execution scene' was surreal, although I guess you could say the whole time at Logue Town was as well with the way it slipped between present and past reality.
As for why Luffy didn't try and fight - well I guess he probably thought dying at the same place as Gol D Roger with no regrets was ok.
-
I agree it was more to show his fate. But, think about it, do you think Luffy would have thought about how to escape? He wouldn't think to kick buggy, or do anything else to escape, he is Luffy afterall. I don't think he really gave up, He was more sorry to his nakama, so he wanted to say sorry. Also he had no regrets.
-
Hey, let´s just all imagine that somehow seastones where involved and put an end to this discussion.
His smiling at death scene was to meaningful to be overshadowed by such a thing.
-
Ah ok, but I disagree, I think Luffy would think t escape ot hit Buggy.
