Does anyone remember what season (in the story world) this manga began, and how much time has passed since then? I'm trying to figure out roughly how much longer we might have until Souma hits his second year in Tootsuki.

I think if you just want to know how long the school year is still going to go and we assume Tootsuki follows the same school year schedule as normal japanese high schools, I think just looking up those will help.
If you want to figure out how much chapters there might be until Soma's second year I'm afraid to tell you that, that would be a pretty fruitless endeavor, because narrated time ≠ narrative time.

! Not feeling this chapter, the apple prince is still pretty funny, but man this chapter felt like it was dragging a bit just so it can have the "next mysterious dish" cliffhanger. I also may be getting a bit tired of the tastegasm joke pictures I just really want more character interactions/moments.
! While I understand why Megumi is one of the judges it just makes me wish that we could have some other side characters more highlighted.
! Especially when we got that cool introduction chapter of all these other students.

As for next chapter I think a loss seems obvious? But that seems too easy and from a story standpoint I guess this should at least show a bit how soma has grown. But I can't imagine him winning either. With an uneven number of judges a draw seems also unlikely without some twisting. -

funny..that combo bugged me too right away..but there are lots of research put on this manga..so it must be right…

Apples and onions work DEPENDING on what sort of sauce you use with it. Just mashing onions and apples into your mouth is terrible/weird so it is all in the sauce that combines the two together.
PS: it can't also be a thick sauce since that would overpower the taste. Probably something along the lines of lighter vinegar where it allows you to taste both the apple and onion but making sure they don't really taste awkward at the same time.

Actually there are even dishes without any sauce for apples and onions if the onions are really cooked till they are sweet.

There are lots of salads and slaws that use apple and onion together, it's not that odd.

It surprisngly works. There's a crepe truck I ate at that has this amazing crepe with pink lady apple slices, brie, prosciutto, and sweet onion chutney.

! Fun chapter, Jouichirou's childish winner face is priceless. Feeling a bit dumb for getting stumped on "ごちとーたまでちた" until I noticed it sounds kind of similar to "ご馳走様でした"… the context was pretty obvious on that front. Still a lot to learn I have...
Not sure what to think of this 2 chapter arc/interlude. I'm just probably a bit down on it given that I'm more excited about a lot of other stuff but I guess the arc accomplishes quite a bit. Establishing Soma's father as a character thus giving us a better picture about Soma's goal. It also. probably serves as a founding stone for a more meaningful encounter between Erina and Jouichirou, given that we know both characters a bit better now-So I guess it's actually been pretty good despite me not being that excited by it.

I've only just read the previous chapter. I was really really surprised that only Soma's dish got covered in that chapter. Kinda feels slow for what it is.

I love how many of the ingredients Soma's dad used are personal favourites of mine. Miso, Shitaku mushrooms, lotus root, (carrots and turnips obviously), Tempeh, teriyaki and vegetable stock. It made the chapter really, really mouth watering.

Summary
! - Shiomi's flashback of entering the polar dorm, she passed fumio's test on her first try.
- Jouichirou asks her if she wants to try his new creations(xD)
- She answers yes, thus starting their relationship in which she became Jou's guinea pig
- Soma is throwing in how she didn't change much from back then(appearance wise)
- She shrugs it off that her youthful look is thanks to the many spices she has eaten
- Soma makes a remark about his dad's treatment of his junior to Megumi (xD her face…)
- Shiomi is fine helping Megumi but not Soma
- We're introduced to Hayama Akira(the tanned cinnamon guy), he's Shiomi's assistant and also a first year
- Which is unusual since only second years attend seminars, he's there though because Shiomi needs him
- Some squabble between the two with Hayama winning
- Lots of talk about spice, Shiomi is very buff on the theory(chemistry) of it all, her mouth is watering just looking at the formulas
- Hayama gives them some actual dishes their seminar specializes in
- We learn why Hayama is her assistant his fine nose enables him to put Shiomi's theories to practice.
- Soma issuing him a challenge, saying that he will let him taste a more delicious curry than he served him at the elections
I went with my feeling on what I think are the most interesting things leaving other stuff out(like more detailed explanations on spices or the dishes themselves), but if there are any question just ask them.
And that's good. Cause… u know... Shokugeki no Souma is a cooking manga

i hope now Shokugeki no Soma will be more like Cooking MasterBoy or Yakitate Japan with more creative and exaggerate techniques, styles and recipes.. so far we only got to see the food already finish and a little bit theory behind them.. still lacking that drama involving cooking and the battle itself..

Chapter summary:
! - Hayama is surprised by Soma's challenge and asks him if he didn't feel anything from his curry
- Soma tells him that his curry was so good it made him jealous of his skills
- Hayama says that facing spices is facing their scent and that he doesn't stand a chance with him having that special sense of smell
- Soma and Megumi are doing some self study on spices
- Megumi is getting overwhelmed by the amount of different spices used for curry and the resulting complexity of mixes
- Megumi is being swept up by one of her worry attacks, Soma calms her down with one of his old stories
- When he was in his 6th year of elementary his father told him to create one of the dishes for their new menu, a challenge he hasn't faced before
- He tells her that if he would freeze up every time he was lacking something(knowledge/skills/etc) he wouldn't be able to cook at all
- A few days are passing, Megumi decides to go back to her hometown in order to try out different local ingredients with spices
- A few more days are passing. Ishiki walks in on a sleep deprived Soma, after seeing what he has done he tells him it's very interesting
- Hayama is very eager to prove the superiority of his combi with Shiomi
- Chapter ends with the elections starting
