Can we just make Megumi and Alice the new leads of this series.
Food Wars - It's In the Trash

@MDL:
Seems like Soma felt like that too, if this expression was anything to go by.
Credit where credit is due, the author was able to sum up my reaction to the last few chapters in one panel.
Yeah, Megumi's whole arc is sorta symbolic of the whole thing. People keep bringing up 'this series is so silly!' as a defense of sorts, but at its best, the series had a lot of great dramatic moments, too, that managed to land even tho 'people turn nakey xD so random!' It's amazing how the gimmick is almost entirely unrelated to the arguments of quality it gets brought up in.
Oh yeah, that's a whole other pit of rat corpses to sift through. But hey, the series is goofy sometimes! All mistakes are forgiven, since comedy is some sorta indulgence that clears an author of sin so long as they do a funny every now and then.
I remember when I first started the series, which was through the anime, that I thought it was just going to be a silly cooking show with no substance. Then there was Megumi's arc over the two seasons of the anime I watched, as well as some other moments where I was like "Wow, there's some pretty great moments in all this silliness, well done". Heck, I remember the little moment with Hisako and Soma where he helped her get over her loss and return to Erina. It was a nice little moment. I also liked the moment where Erina told the owner of that restaurant to shut up and let Megumi talk. Much like early Simpsons, even with all the comedy there can be some really heartfelt moments and things to be said. Then the author for some reason ditched most of the cast and had them as background cheerleaders. I might've been fine with Megumi losing against pastry chef girl, if she could've had a victory against someone, even one of the disposable top tens brought on last minute.
On the Azami thing, it just feels so weird that he puts on pants then leaves. I wasn't expecting a great wrap up to his character, but with him being so prevalent for so long, it's so strange that he's tossed aside like that. Heck, even a page where he looks at Senzaemon as he leaves would've at least have put some emphasis on it. As is, the part with Erina thanking him in her mind was really strange with all the context we have of their relationship. I did look back at the chapter and there was that one judge brought on last minute that said something, but once again, no impact with how she was a last minute addition for pretty much no reason.
Has anyone been watching the third season of the anime? I wonder if perhaps it has done anything to help improve the pacing or quality in any areas.

That would be amazing, yes!
-
Shokugeki no megumi. Megumi and Alice (and no-bandana ryo sometimes) travel the countryside to claim the title of the home cooking king and with her new power and prestige allow the term to be Queen
Also fame, fortune, food battles and no asami or the future of the restaurant industry on danger.

Yeah dude, it's been a long time since then because it all kinda died down when Azami showed up, but it had a lot of great developments where you have some moments of helping someone get over their lack of confidence, showing how a real graduate of the school actually works his ass off to own a restaurant, character development for a good amount of the cast after they were introduced. You had a relevant cast of characters and it really felt like the series was innovating its dishes as the series progressed. Especially Megumi where you saw where she started and then you see where she goes.
Really, Azami's shenanigans are one thing, but I think the biggest issue with him since he was introduced, the series walked back on a lot of its arcs
- The value and worth of an Elite 10 was basically curbstomped into the ground
- The school's already-barebones curriculum was basically completely destroyed
- The side cast basically got completely shafted in terms of appearing, leaving it to our main quartet
- Character development for the most part was static, and even for the one whose arc focus it was, the climax and payoff were lacking (YMMV)
It's why it's reaaalllyyyy downplaying the worth of the early series by just writing off the current developments as "lel, it's all fun guize, just enjoy the ride" because I'd say most of us who are complaining (except HeartOfDarkness) actually think there was a good amount of decent development and writing that complemented the food well. Hell, I remember when I started the series (as well as everyone I introduce the series to) we're like, damn this is some risque shit that ain't my type, but we gave it a good faith effort and it turned around our expectations. The fact that it had a pretty decent story to tell beyond just "hey we cook good."

Lol, that quote by the judge was even more nonsensical the whole ideal was. "Yeah, he had a great philosophy, but the problem was that there was just someone better that he wasn't expecting."
His entire culinary philosophy rested on pinning his hopes on a single kid in the hopes of standardizing food, but he never calculated that there would be a chef that had n+1 culinary skill compared to Tsukasa.

Surely there has to be a good reason why people keep coming back for more despite showing their disappointment with the current direction. Except a certain someone I won't even give him the benefit of the doubt, because all he's been doing the whole time is trash talking.
-
It's like one of those friends that you've invested a lot of time into where they come knocking on your door every week because they just lost their job because of incompetency and inattentiveness and need to bum on your couch and you really want them to turn their life around because you've known them for so long but you really deep down know that they're not going to be able to do it, and maybe in a few weeks or so they may end up just leaving the state entirely because of how horrible the situation is

In other words, the axe.

The series definitely started off with the idea it was going to be just cooking and then having very risqué reactions to it. It was enough to get me interested and it would stay like that for a little while. Then when we got little developments and some great payoffs, it went from a series that was I watched/read for fun to a series that was good. After all of this, I'm not sure if it can really get back to the quality from before since it seemed to basically skip over so much potential development. That's assuming the series won't be ending in a few chapters. Maybe it's because I haven't been keen on the story quality, I also feel like the foodgasms that have helped me stay interested have become stale over time.
Surely there has to be a good reason why people keep coming back for more despite showing their disappointment with the current direction. Except a certain someone I won't even give him the benefit of the doubt, because all he's been doing the whole time is trash talking.
Honestly, most of it comes from the fact that if I get into a series like this that's on going, I have a hard time dropping it. When it takes a few minutes a week to read one new chapter, it's not asking a whole lot of me to keep up with it just to see how it continues. Especially with Bleach and Naruto, it can be interesting to see how it compares to earlier and what may have gone wrong. That said, the series still manages to have some moments that I like, mainly reactions and certain characters just being them (such as Rindou).
-
It's all said then. Next week it's a new start, so let's just patiently wait and see if we can have fun times again.

There was a time during the autumn festival where we had the highest of quality foodgasms (one of which is the reason why the thread title is the way it is) and the story really knew how to work its characters
Now we've got exploding clothes
It's kind of interesting how the quality of the foodgasms directly correlates with the quality of the series

The series thoroughly exploded its premise with the Azami arc, since up until then all the intrigue and narrative weight was put into seeing what challenges our main force would be up against next. And those moments were all good even through to the last one, which was either the food festival or the stagiaire arc. Azami and beyond might as well be a different series.

Times like this makes me glad I still go to these forums.
-
I guess that when you read the outcome of a long arc and your first thought is "Gosh, I hope the series is already over" then the authors didnt do a proper job out of it.
-
Surely there has to be a good reason why people keep coming back for more despite showing their disappointment with the current direction. Except a certain someone I won't even give him the benefit of the doubt, because all he's been doing the whole time is trash talking.
Same reason people stuck with Naruto and Bleach so long. A strong opening can get you invested and make you want to know where it goes and how it all ends… even if its not as good as it used to be.
For instance, I haven't read the series in a loooong time now (I fell off when they started doing straight up tournaments) but the thread title got me curious as to if it was ending or something and wondering just how much effort it would be to catch up.
-
If in One Piece, Oda decided to have Luffy go to space, I would say it would be garbage writting because in the greater schemes of things there is no reason for him to go to space, but a ton of people would support it, because there were hint that its possible for they to go to space.
But it still would be awful.
Fuck space.
-
I'm guessing they're going to fill the last 3 spots of the Elite 10 with Alice, Ryo and Akira.

Enel is in space.

I don't want an space arc (unless they are abducted by that low orbit moon that attacked Bege), because I wouldn't like the heavy alterations to sunny to make it spaceworthy, or them leaving the ship behind.
-
Similar to them having no reason to go to sky island but they still did.

Of someone plucky enough with a sad dream cries in front of Luffy they'll go to space lol.

Spacepiece would be funpiece.

I don't see where else could the series go from now on… Will I drop this series or not? I wonder... At least I'm thinking the thread is becoming more interesting than the series. thanks guys!

It could still do that contest Souma's dad dropped out of.

Well, there's still 2 years of high school (I think, they are still first years right?), new characters to introduce, Blue (the competition Souma's dad dropped out of) which could introduce other culinary schools, recurring events we've seen in the first year etc.
Plenty of stuff that could be done. Whether you'll find it entertaining is another thing though.
-
That is assuming shonen jump doesn't axe this series.

People have been saying this for over a year, I think the series is just fine.

As long as there're good dishes and duels I could enjoy it. But I'm tired of the constant deification of youth with out purpose, and I wonder now if the duels still win over that.
-
The anime gets good reviews, and I could see them continuing it.
They shouldn't though, they should follow the Black Cat model and just end it now.

I believe grandpa's intention with this move is to relieve Erina of any chores she had when she attended as a member of the Student Body, giving her all the time to enjoy her life to her fullest, something she was deprived of because of the big responsibilities she had before. I recall there was a special chapter centered around that.
I will admit right now that I followed the series on and off, and have not really read all the chapters, so I am not entirely certain about the intricacies of each role and what their responsibilities are. With that said, I am not sure how running the school is less of a chore for her age, than just being a student. If relieving her of her duties was the intention, would it not be better for her to actually not be part of the E10 nor be the headmaster? Just a regular student, her age, doing homework, not taking care of business, deals, trades, school curricula and whatever else the headmaster does?
On the other hand, if the headmaster role is so empty, why is it even something to be amazed by. It was established that the E10 are the ones that actually have control over the school and its decisions.
That's why it seems weird, on one hand, it seems that her responsibilities have increased, on the other, if they have not, why is it a merit to become the school headmaster?
-
OOOOHHH. I know how they can continue Shokugeki no Souma! Erina has to prove herself as the new director of Tootsuki, and show that the school is still above all the other schools, despite the shift in management to a teenage girl (likely to raise eyebrows in japan). So they introduce international and japanese schools and have Souma and the Elite Ten (our gang) go up in Shokugekis with other schools' top dogs to uphold the school's status as best culinary school, and prevent it from being ranked lower than it was under Azami/Senzaemon.
Also gives opportunities for Souma-Erina bonding, and for Souma to truly prove himself as a worthy 1st seat.
Could also go for Blue, but as it currently stands I think this could be the logical next step if they want to continue the series.

Isn't Blue basically a competition between schools?
-
Isn't Blue basically a competition between schools?
Idk is it? Seemed like more of an independent competition for really good students.
-
Well, if we haven't heard that it ended, then it survives another week.
-
! Looks like I was correct, small time-skip of 4 months. Souma is first seat, Hayama 4th, Kurokiba 5th, Alice 6th and Tadokoro 10th.
-
! I know that it's a formality as a result of winning against Azami, but I can't stop squeeing in delight for Megumi being a part of the elite 10.
So proud, considering what she went through in her earlier focus. -
@MDL:

So proud, considering what she went through in her earlier focus.! She'll have plenty of opportunities to prove that she earned that seat, as I read many people say she shouldn't be an elite because she hasn't won a single match. How easy they forget the criteria for someone to win a seat in the E10 goes beyond your culinary skills.
! And it appears there're still some remnants of Central. That's an ideology for ya. -
And none of it is earned.
-
The new title thread is real dumb, change that. And while you're at it, how about you cease off with this stupid wordplay in the forum as a whole, it ain't funny at all.
-
Nope .
-
-
! It's kind of ridiculous to say Tadokoro shouldn't be an Elite when you remember that basically all of her matches have been against people who have been much higher than her in skill. The closest to her was Kurokiba. Can't forget she managed to get a 2-1 rather than clean sweeped against Momo despite her being 3/4th seat and a 3rd year.
-
! That 1 was purely for the potential of her dish, Momo's dish was superior in every other way that actually matters. The most Megumi could get out of Momo was a "Eh, you're okay." All so Momo can job to Erina in her next fight. Fuck that, Megumi hasn't earned a goddamn thing. Alice and Kurokiba are above her when even they didn't have the skills to come close to the Elite Ten.
-
@Purple:
Nope .
ABUSE OF POWER!
I still think it's funny, heck, it's the thread title on this site that got me reading Shokugeki in the first place lol.
-
https://readms.net/r/shokugeki_no_souma/264/5101/1
Hope we get more of this, the manga always shines in these character interaction chapters.
Also nice to see that not everyone is calmly accepting Erina's role as headmaster and doubting the Nakiri name. Could make for an interesting storyline.
-
That was more coherent than I thought it would be. I'm okay with how this went. A mini time jump does wonders sometimes.
-
Don't we have a better translator out there? The translations are again quite inaccurate and they even made a minor mistake with the numbers.
Just like with the previous chapter, where Erina seemed to thank Azami, when what she was actually saying is "Until today I've been under your control. Farewell, father".
I think we should stop relying on MS, they are not taking their job seriously.
-

Saaame. I quite like where this is going so far.
It's very much in line with where I thought we could go from here, and gives me smug confidence going forward.
(Though I'm also prepared for things to go wrong, and for me to eat those words.)I ADORE the new philosophy at the school, challenges flying left and right.
Feels like it should have been like that from the start! :DHopefully this mission will lead to a personal victory for Megumi.
She's come so far in her confidence and skills, but sadly her win/loss record doesn't reflect it.
This would be a perfect opportunity to give her something. -
Chapters like this are why SnS will never fall from grace. Also, you're going to have to try harder to convince me the series lost its soul, because after marathoning the whole thing, I'm not seeing any of that. Even Central arc with its eerie atmosphere had many of the things that make the manga so good, and the clashs were entertaining. The RDC had some of the best cooking battles, and the final match blows the one in the Autumn Election out of water IMO. Why I'm saying that now? I had to get it off my chest to make clear my stance and that I'm not buying any of that fearmongering.

Feels like it should have been like that from the start! :DThey said Erina wasn't capable, that she was too young. How easy they forget the Nakiri are Yakuza and regardless of her promotion she would have taken the reigns of the family anyway. She sure is delivering.
Hopefully this mission will lead to a personal victory for Megumi.
