100% agreed on all three counts.
Food Wars - It's In the Trash

Last chapter was incredibly awful, but this chapter does save it somewhat.
Glad to see that it's going to go for a 'maintaining the stability of the new regime' arc before trying to get to greater heights (which would probably break the suspension of disbelief, given how precarious everything currently is).
Top comment on Mangastream needs re-iterating for how good it was:
Megumi's 10th Seat? That's just a cover: Don't you know that when Megumi becomes super duper angry, she becomes the 0th Seat?!
Hopefully we'll be able to move past the Azami horror show and get back in the fun school shenanigans groove (and hey, can we have more erina-souma romance development? I want more cutesy scenes of tsundere Erina falling for our main guy.)
-
I'm not who to say that, but I think people should stop judging things on the spot. We would have more productive discussions if we always did it that way.
(and hey, can we have more erina-souma romance development? I want more cutesy scenes of tsundere Erina falling for our main guy.)
The headmaster and 1st seat interact a lot, so their chemistry is only going to become more prominent from there on.
-
This chapter really goes to what the series is great at when not cooking, characters interacting with each other. Love Alice, Kurokiba, and Hayama interacting and having that trio together again, with the bickering and the classic Alice reactions. The one complaint I have is that because of this skip, we have the third years gone which means no more Rindou, but at least she out in the world having fun with Tsukasa. With the Azami stuff behind us now, I have hopes we can get back to more simple things and have more character focus and less an overarching story.
On a different note, if it wasn't for the blatant stuff with Erina and Soma, I would totally ship Erina and Hisako, Those two are just so adorable together, especially with the Erina-chan part of this chapter.
-
What's wrong with Soma's face?!
-
Hey, remember all of these characters who lost off-screen in the last arc? Some of the best students in this academy.
-
Oh no, Wagomu is still here.
-
Shall I remind him how those two survived that trial? No? Alright.
I wonder who the remaining seats are.
1st: Soma
2nd:
3rd:
4th: Hayama
5th: Kurokiba
6th: Alice
7th:
8th:
9th:
10th: MegumiIishiki and Kuga should be in the top unless they were just content with having their previous seat numbers. Then there are Takumi and Mimasaka.
We are left with one seat and I can't think of anyone in the 92nd who's above Megumi, so perhaps a remmant of the former Elite. Maybe Nene.
And pouting Alice is best Alice.
-
Oh no, Wagomu is still here.
Oh shit. I forgot. This is fiction, so it is literally beyond criticism.
I shouldn't criticize you, though. You're probably fiction, too.
-
Somehow a chapter that barely shows off old interactions that's more or less a copypasta of previous character moments justifies that the series still has its soul
You know, I'd have problems with Megumi having 10th seat and how her character arc was led behind the shed so it could be put down, but seeing as there's literally no one else remarkable in Totsuki, I guess you could say she earned it that way.
Not a horrible chapter per se, but certainly not one that justifies all the bullshit we went through with Azami.

I feel like none of the dynamics have really evolved for the side characters, though, which makes them feel cemented in the sidelines. There's a lot of damage done to the characters, dynamics and stakes of the series that I don't think can be retrieved.

See ya next Friday.

Oh, I completely agree with you, and perhaps my wording should've been different. The Azami stuff has definitely colored my perspective on the series going forward and I have doubts about how enjoyable future stuff can be. Still, I enjoy the character interaction we got and if we get more of that even with the stakes and other aspects gone, I can still enjoy that aspect of the series. Best example I can relate to is how I felt with the penultimate Bleach chapter. Yes, there was years of terrible writing and nothing would fix any of the problems. However, that chapter had a bunch of character interacting with each other and reminded me of the good days of the series, so I was able to enjoy it for what it was. Same here, where it reminds me of before the Azami stuff so I was able to enjoy it, knowing it doesn't fix the problems before nor will anything that happens can fix it.
I basically agree with Hermit's assessment.
-
Wow, that was actually a well written concluding chapter for this manga, seem to tie everything up in a neat bow, which was more than this series deserv-
Wait? No? We are still going?
We're gonna pull a bleach and try to drag this series out when it should be over now?
Fuck.
-
Honestly that's exactly the problem right now. It's the same issues as was in Bleach. Characters being distilled to their most basic essences and being pimped out for very short sequences to say "hey look! See? We remember these characters! Lel look how funny they are together in this super classic interaction." Or how people would justify that we'd see more of Rindou's motivations for joining the Salami administration and her quirky zany personality or her fear of Azami and yet here she is graduated and in the Amazon or something.
If it has its soul, it's basically more of a cardboard cutout of itself than anything substantial
-
Bleach's problem (one of many) was that it kept going after the main story with Aizen was completed.
It had said it's piece and ended rather decently but had to keep going for money/reasons and we all know how shitty it was after that.
I fear Soma is going the same way.
-
I remember this one panel in Bleach during the Nazi arc where Kon was literally thrown in so that Kubo could say "hey gaiz see?? I remember popular character Kon!"
Or how he threw in a training arc for Orihime and Chad and then they did… basically nothing.
Or how other random captains and characters would show up for a few panels, do some classic things, then would just disappear from relevance.
-
Wow, I really like how the author put so much thought and care with the side characters! The former elite 10 graduated and are now successful chefs and our protagonist's friends, through hard work and dedication, managed to climb to the top and become the new Elite 10, the one thing all of them have been striving for and competing against each other for since the very start!
Off screen.
-
So i guess position 2 and 3 have gone to Isshiki and Kuga respectively.
-

Off screen.
This did not happen off-screen.
Alice, Megumi and co. became Elite 10 the minute they won the regimental shokugeki. The only thing that happened off-screen was them swapping their ranks around with constant duels.

oh right..what the fuss was about rindo's fear that aldini talked about? did the author forgot about it?
-
Was kind of dropped, but I guess the implication is that she was the Azami to Tsukasa Sojiro with inverted personalities. Like she was worried for him, but couldn't find the answer to break him out of his gloom, and had her reservations about Azami but decided to follow through for Tsukasa.
And that is what I gleamed by some stolen glances and the old "generations repeat themselves" theme of Shonen. I'm not confident on this theory but meh.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
A ball dropped: why the elite members decided to side with whom in all of this.
From the rebels, we know that ishiki wanted to keep totsuki, koga was very likely throwing a tantrum and Erina was fighting her father, but why didn't megishima follow through?
Same from the other side, the 3 replacements (hayama and the 2 nobodies) were uplifted and wanted to prove themselves, system be damned, Tsukasa was actually convinced personally and rindo went between staying with him and having fun, but the rest?
Maybe eizan was doing it for business, and maybe nono (soba glasses) was in it to go against ishiki, but sushi man and deserts loli?
In total out of the 13 seats that we went through this arc, 5 of them their motivations were established (erina, ishiki, hayama, Tsukasa, and rindo?), 5 could be derived but not confirmed (eizan, kouga, nono, surprise ramen girl, and surprise Italian man), and the last three were just doing things from inertia (momo, saito and megishima).
-
One ball amongst many
-
That's why I say "A ball" not "the ball".
The common one is "Azami's plan is stupid, unrealistic, and unbeliable", and "The foodgasm hasn't been as interesting as the Stand battle or the spice monsters duel card game". Other than the little eirina angels, soma's unlimited stolen techniques works and the ants leading people to the deer, I don't think that any foodgasm had the impact of the tournament, and of those only Soma's would rank high, and maybe Erina's for the echo with the 2th chapter. Maybe Momo's desert mellowing the MC. Everything else was either forgettable or naked women (sometimes men) getting smished by food or having their clothes explode.
-
That was such an awesome chapter.
It was rather good to see Megumi become part of the Elite ten council without really earning any of it.
I mean remember back in Totsuki Autumn Election arc, when Megumi got the chance to prove her worth in front of the entire school and it was so satisfying to see her be recognized for all hard-work? Well fuck that, lets just make her part of the elite ten and destroy what could have been an insanely satisfying moment to just something that happened off-screen.
Seriously, this is one of the laziest chapter I have ever seen in a shonen series. Like the writer went "oh I have a side-cast? Well lets just make them elite ten. That will make up for them being non-existent background characters".
And to think someone ACTUALLY claimed that this was worth going through the Azami garbage. Just wow.

! Shokugeki no Soma is a murder mystery manga
! https://www.imgur.com/a/gqUWxfA What the heck is going on? Haha -
Huh. I didn't expect this manga to get any dumber, yet here we are. Obligatory hot springs episode followed by idiot teenagers solving a "murder mystery." Because who is more qualified to solve a disappearance than cooking students? Certainly not the police.
-
Something tells me it's not murder.
-
Huh. Well this is going to be a weird arc. But less weird than the previous. That guy probably just fainted. And that's food on the knife…Actually I'm wondering if its Eizan.
-
shokugeki no conan

That signature laugh sounds familiar.

Oh yeah, for sure. Not buying this for a second.

I don't recall any characters with a particular laugh.

! Scooby & Shaggy find the mess hall. -
So I guess after ripping off Assassination Classroom, author is going through the rest of Matsui's work and is now ripping off Neuro.

Let's look for frozen tomatoes and room service calculators

So, we're really doing this eh?
Alright, one truth prevails or whatever the fuck.
Also Soma looks a bit cooler now.
-
Getting triggered by my comment from past week, how childish can you get…
I expect this short trip to last a volume, more or less.
I knew Soma was completely oblivious to the huge responsibilites being the 1st seat entailed.

Literally have no idea what you're talking about dude.

If you mean the first line, you can ignore that. It's nothing about you or anyone.

Ah right, my bad there dude, sorry.
But yeah..uh…cooking and stuff....boobs?
-
So this is now Mahou Tantei Nougami Souma? Sign me up that sounds great, murder mystery at the hot springs is right up my alley. Food be damned.
-
Ah yes, where every mystery solution is a foodgasm for Neuro
Much less pleasant for the criminals
-
The evil killer cheff from neuro managed to escape into the soma world.
With the spoilers I was sure it was a fakeut, now I'm not so sure.
But, Megumi handling a crime scene? Soma handling a murder investigation? Erina being the chieff talking about her ciatica or something? Perps being taken down with foodgams? I.. don't think that it's going to work, but I'm willing to see it through, as it at least seems to be entretaining.
-
Side note. I was catching up on the last couple weeks of episodes. I gotta say. I feel it's BS when during a Shokugeki someone presents a dish. The judges eat. The next contestant presents his dish and they eat. Then the 1st person offers an additional component that changes the initial flavor. That's a really lame way to misdirect who's going to win. Hayama should have beat him for a 3rd time.

Screw the rules I have honey

I have no idea what's going on with this series right now, but I'm just enjoying the ride. I have stopped applying logic to it. Just taking in the mindless fun. As long as Azami crap is gone, it's fine…
-
I'm just enjoying the ride. I have stopped applying logic to it. Just taking in the mindless fun.
From the very start of the manga I thought:
"Oh cool, a goofy tale of an overpowered diner chef pulling the rug out from under some snooty elites. I can dig it."
So I never really looked beyond that, which has kept the manga at pretty much the same level of enjoyment throughout.
It certainly is a lot of fun, and as long as it stays that way I'm not going anywhere.I also wish that more shounen MCs could have Souma's level of charisma.
I adore that snarky "I don't give a fuck" side of him that cuts through an opponent's verbal BS.
Yet he also comes off as a playful scamp who can talk unreservedly to almost anyone.
But at the same time he's still got a logical brain on his shoulders.
He can be analytical and a pretty good strategist, though his improv skills have been a saving grace on many occasions. He's so cool to me. Like, legitimately. Seeing him put people in their place is incredibly satisfying.
Like when Hayama was putting on a tough face after joining Azami and acting like a prick,
and Soma went looking for him to just call him out on his stupidity.!
! Beautiful. -
Yeah, but like if you don't actually care about the quality of the manga or most things about it, why even read it, in particular, compared to anything else?
You're sorta just making light of your own passion for the series when you keep saying you don't pay attention to most of it.
-
Soma has charisma?
