Or to cut to the chase, yes.
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

Or to cut to the chase, yes.

Haha, thank you. I'll give it a shot then.

@Ura:
I was thinking about starting this manga. Is it recommendable?
(excuse my English)Yes. Once you start, you'll never want to stop.

Just like good food.

Hey, can anyone tell me what is/are the group(s) scanlating this series? I would like to know, when the latest chapter comes out, where it originally came from.
-
casanovascans is the only group that does english scans of the series.
Here's their site.Their release schedule is sporadic. They tend to not have a "day" that the series normally releases, though I could have overlooked patterns. It does come out later than other series though given a lack of staff to help their cause.
I would suggest reading the scans on their website when you can instead of places like mangapanda because they do have their own reader on their website.

Official twitter account and website for the anime are live: http://shokugekinosoma.com/ https://twitter.com/shokugeki_anime

Raw out in mangabird.
-
On what days do the chapters usually release? Because it seems like Viz will be the first ones to release them.

Pretty great chapter. I'm warming up to the idea of the 3-way finals.
About ESJ, the translation seems great although there's just the difference of them calling the Autumn Election "Fall Classic". But since I don't speak japanese, I can't say which translation is the more accurate.
And having the color spread in "perfect" quality is awesome. -

In case of translations "accurate" isn't a good criteria to judge translations with it's more like a prequisite. There can actually be quite a bit of playroom for translating something while still being accurate. You can generally assume that free translations will generally be more literal in a lot of cases even when it's wrong to be.
Experienced translators that get payed to do it will generally (try to) stay true to the idea behind it all while having no qualms about rewriting whatever needs rewriting if the results reads better in the target language.
As for your specific example. The japanese reads literally autumn election 秋の選抜.
秋(aki) - autumn/fall
選抜(senbatsu) - electionI get the idea behind "Fall Classic" but mmh I'm not a native English speaker so I'm not sure if that describes the idea behind it well. To me personally it feels a bit off but then "autumn elections" isn't aesthetically nice(at least to me).
Sometimes you have to sacrifice a bit of the original meaning in order to gain something new.
In this case "Fall Classic" is kind of catchy and really with the context of the manga there should be no problem to get what it describes, even if it's a bit unclear on it's own.Quoting a translator from a group that I kind of respect(not exact quote though):
If you just translate you're always going to end with something that's lesser than the original text, only if you can add something in the process you have a chance to make something of equal value or maybe even better. -
Amusingly enough, in the USA, 'Fall Classic' is typically used to refer to the World Series (the annual championship series for Major League Baseball).
-
Interesting post DarthAsthma. Very informative.
In this case, I wonder why the author used the word "election".
Does the word have a broader meaning in Japanese ? Therefore, it would explain the change since it would be confusing in English (which it is since I've seen a lot of posts from people thinking "election" means the winner gets a seat in the Elite Ten) -

Oh ok if that's the case I think Fall Classic is pretty cool as a translation. It makes a lot of sense for the American audience.

No, that's not what Alice meant.

No, that's not what Alice meant.
Serious? lol, because that's what I thought she meant. The successors will come from these people in the main tournament
-
I'm really happy that Souma got added to Viz's JUMP line-up. Now I can read it with more quality.
-
Well I've heard Stephen say (not direct quote) on the podcast that it's usually best to translate intent over meaning. I agree and it seems like it was done well in this case for Soma.
-
Yeah, given what Election normally means
for western audiences, I could understand wanting to choose a different phrasing for the tournament. -
Just read chapter 93, the fuck was that.
It was like someone took out a bunch of pages and stuck in some sports manga.
Or it's Kubo level "DUDE, THE VOLLEYBALL SYMBOLIZES THE STRUGGLE OF MAN AND FOOD, I'M SO DEEP MANNNN"

Heh @ ilman.
15 chars of laughter
-
! Kurokiba tells Soma that recognizing the ingredient's quality and choosing the best one(I think he's referring to the fish) will make a huge difference this time.
After losing his judging match against Kurokiba we see Soma the first time really worrying.
There's also a scene where we see Hayama visiting the same fish market before them, he did chose the best quality ones by smell.
He's thinking "This is bad… this is really bad" something among those lines. -
This post is deleted!
-
Chinese scan and a more complete summary are out in their usual places.
! have we ever seen Soma worried before? This could be neat.
! It's glad Kurokiba and Soma had some rival face to face time, but the competition does seem to have the focus more on Kurokiba lately. I wonder if Hayama is going to get more focus before the tournament proper.I do kinda wish SJA started with the Kurokiba/Hayama match though. It's cool it joined the lineup at the start of a new arc, but I think the imagery from the match would have made a bigger impact to reel new fans in instead of learning of choosing ingredients, which is interesting in it's own right, but definitely feels more niche for people interested in cooking than for general shonen audiences, presumably.
-
Wasn't he worried prior to his last match?
-
Wasn't he worried prior to his last match?
He went in fairly confident that he can win(which doesn't mean he had it planned out) or else he wouldn't have made that wager with Subaru.
After that it was just lots of hard work for Soma.! This time Kurokiba tells him that he knows how to judge the ingredients by sheer experience because he has been on fish markets for the last 10 years something that can't be just acquired by studying hard for a few days.
! My guess Megumi's connections to the fisherman could come in handy. -

The company did Nodame Cantabile and Bakuman. That's all I recognized from the list.
I wanna say this is good news, but I've never seen either anime, though I'm a fan of both of the above series… and I forgot what people thought of the Bakuman anime.
-
HAven't seen Bakuman, and I've only seen bits of Nodame, but at least with Nodame it seems like they're a good fit to do Soma. The guys have a lot of attention to detail during the musical parts, in part because they use CGI to recreate I presume video while some person is legit playing so it doesn't do the normal thing in animation where the fingers don't line up with what's actually playing, but Soma kinda falls in that same category where there's not too much to animate other than a few key scenes

J.C. Staff can do a good job when they want. I'd have more faith if Nagai (Honey and Clover, Toradora, AnoHana, Railgun) was the director, the material seems like something he'd do well with. Alas, he's not.
-
Yonetani Yoshitomo directed GaoGaiGar and that's as perfect match for Shokugeki no Souma as could be.
Now the series composition might be a problem.

Good chapter this week.
It's always nice to show that Souma is not perfect. Still he will probably win anyway even without the best fish (kinda like against Nikumi). -
Casanova Scans released chapter 94 for those without Shonen Jump Alpha.
-
! Oh wow didn't think about it but it seems like Soma is trying to get ahead in the ingredient department by asking for the know how of Ibusaki(smoke dude) and Ryouko(fermentation gal), that is way better than having the call back to the fishermen through Megumi. Always fun to see side characters getting a bit more spotlight.
-
i was thinking he could catch the fish him self. That way he does not have to gamble on whats a good one and whats not. He just has to now how o preserve them properly
-
The age and life of the fish can influence, plus the river of the pikes might not be close enough to the school to make that possible, we have no notion of Soma being a fisher, and while it might be very well a talent of Megumi, I think that it would fit more with Soma's character to take a subpar ingredient and make it shine.
It's just that you can't do that with sashimi..

Shueisha published an official, digitally colored version of Chapter 95 in the newest digital Weekly Shonen Jump.
