The bacon is smoked with mesquite tree(originating from Southern America) -> the guy who wrote this spoiler is wondering if he got that from defeating Ibusaki.
Mimasaka got most of his information by "hacking"(he stole the password) into Mitsuru's PC.
! On the other end Soma is taking out a cooler box while being glared at by Taki.
The cooler box contains a great number of meat pieces.

! Chefs tend to overprepare for their cooking. They never want to risk bringing too little, and any leftovers can be saved for other stuff. Still, I wouldn't be surprised to see some rather large chips from him; the fat content of that bacon, if done right, can help emphasize the flavor of the beef tail and soften it, to tame the sinew. Beef tail has very little, if any, fat. However, bacon too has a strong taste, so adding too much could end up spoiling the beefiness.
And I think I figured out Soma's plan all along.
! Cook as little as possible until Mimasaka thinks he's pretty much done and only copies him to that extent, then bring out the big guns… or meat. Brilliant.

! Shokugeki no Soma 86 - Garniture
! We begin with a small scene about Subaru learning Soma is using Tail meat from a PC and thinking he must have thought up something after going to Erina.
! The lump of meat is revealed to be smoked bacon.
! (the cover page features Erina comfortably reading her manga <3<3<3<3<3)
! Erina reveals that Souma's stew is one that's strained before serving which would leave only meat and sauce which would be too simple.
Because of that, she concludes the bacon is to be used as garnish, which makes sense as she mentions it's one of the common garnishes for a beef stew.
! Some spectator asks what the smoking chips he used are to which Subaru answers it's "Mesquite".
Most of the characters don't know this tree, Shun explains it's a tree native to South US and its chips are commonly used there but not in Japan.
Subaru adds that he added brown cane sugar, sage, nutmeg, and bay leaf to a pickling mix he used to pickle the bacon to further improve the flavor.
Yuuki asks why the hell is Subaru so knowledgable about smoking and compares his skills/knowledge with Shun's which doesn't please the latter much.
! Sonoka points Souma doesn't look like he has any special garnish and Taki once again declares he won't ever win this like that.
! Mitsuru starts wondering how did Subaru get to learn all that when Souma made the kitchen off-limits.
Subaru then approaches Mitsuru and recommends him to change his password to a stronger one (he had his birthday as password).
! We then get a small flashback on Mitsuru writing his article.
! We return to the match and Mitsuru notices Subaru peeked at his PC (you don't say).
Subaru points that he had other ways to go through this but thanks Mitsuru for making his job easier.
! We then get a flashback to Ikumi and Megumi trying to win waifu points with Souma.
! We return to the match and Mitsuru starts blaming himself. (he should be ashamed XD)
! Souma's waifus (Megumi and Ikumi) and Yuuki start panicking and then Souma brings out a big cooler-box.
! Souma calls out on Taki which surprises her.
Souma tells her he'll listen to her complaints after he serves his dish.
He then proceeds to cook many other pieces of many other different parts of beef, the ones mentioned are fillet, tongue, tripe, and cheek.
All the audience wonders what the hell is Souma trying to do to which he just says that he's about to take the judges to the Beef Amusement Park.
After some confusion from our new judges, the waifus, and Subaru, we get a final scene illustrating what Souma said.

We know he earned a 91, but we don't know the dish. Given Shun's personal scorn though, I feel like he ripped off his dish. That's just a theory though.

Smoke guy. Like I said, it's just a theory. I could be way off base and the guy could just be a sore loser since he "might" have been in the finals if Copycat didn't win since he tied with glasses for 4th. It just seemed pretty personal.

I don't see it but like always I think it's the hairstyle. People really put a lot into that when saying character x and y look really similar in manga and anime.

Mmh chapter out that clears up the weird bacon chips that I left ambigious? Really hard to get those katakana right without the proper chapter which gives you a lot of context.
Never heard of smoking chips either. Pretty sure we use whatever wood is used.Also when you think about it Soma and Mimasaka seem to be pretty similar in how they evolve as cooks.
Both seem to take in what they learn from other cooks.
While Soma mixes it with all what he's learned and often creates something new Mimasaka learns that stuff and tries to go +1 on it.
But they both are a lot about versatility and adapting. -

They don't? All those things are independent of each other.

I think I figure out what Soma is trying to do. After his last battle with daddy, souma now always try to elevate the minimum requirement of a dish. now the minimum requirement for this dish is no longer just a beef stew. Due to mimasaka copycat skills, the minimum is now a dish with an impressionable "first bite".
So logically, souma will make a dish that every bite is a "first bite". That's why he needs other parts of beef.

'twas a fun chapter all around. We had Souma coming up with an interesting new concept, stalker-kun NTR'ing reporter-kun, and (something I'm not really fond of) Nikumi and (cover) Nakiri acting all tsundere, taking away a good part of their credibility as female characters. 2/3, nice.

It seems strongly hinted that Subaru and Smoker-kun have had some sort of confrontation in the past, maybe after the prelims or that Subaru decided to trace him before the prelims started.

So I finally laid eyes on the jump next vol 3 Soma special I can't find the chinese scans anymore but here is a summary:
! - First bit is Nikumi being all nervous and planning out how to hand over some of her excess dish creations
- She's resolving herself on just being natural about it
- When she opens the door though she's met with Soma, Yoshino and Isshiki trying to find people to eat their excess creations as well
! - Second bit is girls asking the Aldini brothers if they could have lunch with them.
- They welcome them and suggest trading side dishes.
- The girls then think to themselves how they would be a dozen times better served by taking them as side dishes. I think the English equivalent to this would be taking the girls for dessert?(While thinking that their maiden hearts explode pic: is them flying in the air with an explosion cloud behind them)
! - third story is Alice visiting Erina
- Hisako is doing a body check on her before she lets Alice through.
- Hisako and Ryou are glaring at each other in the background while Alice tries to invite Erina on a picnic
- We see Erina holding her stomach uncomfortably
- She had to do too much tasting so she's full, Alice tries to give her Ryou's large sandwich anyway.
! - Last story from the past
- We see 2 girls begging Jouichirou for something….
-... it's his bad tasting creations. - The tastegasm for the girls has a clear masochistic touch while we see them in bliss in the follow up(them thinking: It tastes so bad.... but it's so fulfilling.)
- Jouichirou asks Gin if he wants some too which he declines

! I did mention I wouldn't be surprised if Subaru combined the flavors of beef and bacon. I did not, however, expect what sort of image would come from that combo. Apparently, it's a beef-pork fusion wrestler who attempts to land a "cross bomber" upon the well endowed Sonoka, only to be blocked by Doujima.
! Oh, and I guess Soma's still cooking up something in an earthen charcoal brazier… or in other terms, he's making bbq. Since he didn't actually start preparing until earlier this morning, Subaru can't quite guess what he's going to do and is, gasp, actually concerned. -
