One Piece Film Z (Wrap Canon From the Manga Not Yet in the Anime with Spoiler Tags)
-
I wonder why Film Z's bluray/dvd sales seem to be significantly less that Strong World's, despite Film Z having better box office returns? Perhaps the additional number of people who bought Strong World dvds corresponds to the amount that didn't see it in the theater, and this time around with Film Z, more people saw it in the theater and didn't feel the need to buy the dvds?
-
Well Strong World did come with the promise of ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE OMG, which I don't think Z had any of. (I did notice a few re-recorded lines in the beginning though.) Granted even in Strong World said ADDITIONAL FOOTAGE OMG was pretty inconsequential.
-
@Vegard:

Really wow! Can you tell me which lines were rerecorded? Were any lines changed?

Oh, it's not much. It's just, during the scene where everyone was talking about how Usopp's pesticide was hurting Chopper n'stuff at the start, they removed every instance of the word "pesticide" (Or, "nouyaku", but you know what I mean). For some reason. So any lines that included that word were changed. Something I just coincidentally noticed because I translated that scene from the Korean hardsubbed version, and then later when I actually got the BluRay and started using that for my translation instead (which was an improvement because I could play it with subtitles switched on, making it FAR easier to look up words I didn't understand, not to mention not needing to rewind a line five times over if I couldn't hear what they said) I went back to that scene to fix up some other translation-related stuff and noticed "Hey, this dialogue is suddenly different!"

That´s strange! Why would they do something like that! But if the word is missing then the whole conversation doesn´t make any sense right? I mean the scene was all about the "pesticide".

I posted this ins the anime discussion, I guess it would make more sense to post it here.
Any Italian fans around? WE have an italian subbed version.

They just rewrote the lines to not actually use that word. I dunno, maybe they thought that word seemed too intelligent for Luffy or something…
IT'S A MYSTERY REWRITE!!! -
Got my Blu ray too early this week, the movie is as i expected awesome! i watched it when he was released on theater in France.
I don't think people don't buy BD or DVD because they watched the movie in Theater, when you love a movie and wanna watch it you buy it.
I'm waiting for the french BD release to get it as well so i can support the best manga/anime in the galaxy! -
So I got the Blu-Ray/DVD earlier in the week and put it on. Anyone know how to access that filler arc? Coulda sworn someone said it was on but can't seem to find….well anything except trailers in the way of extras
-

IT'S A MYSTERY REWRITE!!!The whole pesticide conversation at the beginning of the film seemed really odd, it's not really the sort of conversation the crew would usually strike up. It's quite long, I don't understand if they're trying to reflect on something within the film or real-life issues, or what it is tries to achieve. Now it's even more interesting now that there's a re-write. Oh and I still don't know where all the cherry blossoms are coming from =/
Anyone know how to access that filler arc?
Glorious Island? It's the first selection on the bonus dvd.
-
Glorious Island? It's the first selection on the bonus dvd.
He probably means the Z's Ambition Arc, which didn't come with Film Z.
-
nah it was Glorious Island Hmmm. Japan's stuff is PAL isn't it? So should work without an issue. Only tried the DVD. Is it the the DVD with Luffy and Z or the one with the girls + Chopper on?
-
Not sure, it shouldn't be that hard to find, it's on the disc that the movie isn't on.
-
So I just watched one piece film z I have to say it was excellent,it improved on the most important areas like the script which puts it above all the other movies also it was smart of them to make this into original character story as they have the freedom to develop that character how they want through the movie where they can't with the canon characters.
+animation was exellent
-the only weak point in the movie was the direction, Tatsuya Nagamine should never be allowed to director a one piece movie again, the silly crazy camera angles only served to hurt the movie and obscure the action.
Excellent movie thanks to Oda and Osamu Suzuki on the script and the excellent animation team.

jojo the besto

wow, that panel with sunny gaon canon looks so wild!!!!!
-
So just in case anyone cares, the Yibis sub of the movie is now out at last… Well, the 1080p version anyway. The lower resolution versions are still being encoded.
-
Idk if anyone's still on this thread but, can anyone tell me why they advertised the hell of random milk bottles in a One Piece movie? Like they pushed those ads pretty hardcore, dude. It was a little distracting, not gonna lie. There's gotta be some reason, right…?
I mean, just "Milk" by itself is a pretty vague thing to advertise, not to mention totally random. Was it some sort of specific brand deal or something, or did they literally just want ppl to drink more cow juice...?
Hopefully someone can help me out here. However, if this question was already asked and answered somewhere in the past 191 pages, then please forgive me. I really didn't feel like sifting through that many pages of text...

Sweet, thanks for letting us know! I don't really watch the latest episodes so I don't check the Yibis site often.

just gonna say my two cents on this movie. its one of the best anime movies I've watched. the animation was amazing, the whole story was great, the emotion was great, just everything was great, gahhh. I loved Z's character, loved that we got to see Kuzan and Borsalino again, loved the fight at the end, this movie was just amazing and went above my expectations.
-
@Aru:
Watched the movie.
! The animation and music was great. The story was, for me personally, crap. A lot of fanservice (and I don't mean just boobs or whatever, I mean putting a known character in the movie for a few seconds just to, well, show him), the fights didn't have what I liked about Strong World - characters attacks just didn't have weight behind them, a lot of the time we didn't see any major damage. Z wasn't even shown as a huge threath. Yeah, he beat Luffy two times, because movie logic and LKuffy didn't use a lot of his arsenal, but even then - I would like to see a guy who can take everything Luffy has to offer and get up. I wanted Z to take an Elephant Gatling Gun for hours and still fight
I don't even want to talk about Sanji's and Zoro's fights - Z's companions were 2D cut-outs without any major characteristics. I loved the ninja guy, he had a great design and animation, but the two fights took just a few seconds! At the beginning the ninja guy defeats everyone, and now Sanji didn't even have to bother? And the girl wasn't even a swordsman!
And the whole plot hole with the power reverting back to normal and everyone being at the correct age again…
! The worst thing - the Straw Hats didn't even have to be in this movie. They didn't care about Z's plan, they only wanted Luffy's hat back and to take revenge for Sunny. Aokiji was always there to fight Z and stop him if there was any need. Seriously, take out SH and what happens? Aokiji still knows where Z is, the Marines still come to the last island, everything is the same. They could fight and win with Z no problem, there was just no point to this story. In String World Shiki took Nami, the SH were seriously the only ones who could stop him there and now. Z had this problem, the movie was too ambitious, wanted to show us all the big Marines and it just made the SH look smaller, useless. That's one of the things I love about one piece. They are the main characters of this story but not the most powerful or important people in the world. Yet anyway. I love the feeling is smallness because it makes the world seem so my h larger when u know there are guys out there that can demolish the straw hats. I feel like the world will go on without them if they were all to die and that's how you know you've built a fine world.
-

There's been some mystery about this movie that I don't think anyone has really knows the answer, the beginning scene with the poison (which had dialogue changed for the home release according to a past post) is really odd.
The straw hats talk about how Usopp's poison/pesticide alters the taste of their drinks, thus reflecting on being an adult/kid?
It does reflect on the story slightly, but it's hard to tell why it's significant. Also, where are the cherry blossoms falling from? (EDIT: they are coming from Franky, whoops.)Oh yeah Los Angeles CA? Possibly some island Oda hasn't revealed yet…..

Drinking milk when you visit a hot spring is sort of a Japanese tradition.
Other than that scene, where did they have milk? I can only remember Chopper drinking at the beginning, but then they were all drinking different things.
-

Oh really? Well, I guess that would explain it, lol. They didn't drink milk that many times, but it stuck out to me whenever they did. Like that one cover for SJ that had some of the Straw Hat boys and Kuzan drinking milk, also in Glorious Island, Chopper was drinking some milk, he was even wearing a cow outfit.
Now that I think about it, there were a couple of things about this movie that I didn't really get. For example like Dropper said, the scene on the Sunny with Usopp's pesticides and the dialogue about them not being worms, or the drinks tasting different because they're older or something like that.
A lot of it was just very random to me, I guess :/
-
Let's see, my thoughts on the movie…
! First off, despite his rather Liefeldian appearance, Z felt rather different in a good way from usual One Piece antagonists. Oda's villains are usually quirky and memorable, but as characters they tend to be one-dimensional for the most part. Z had a legitimately sympathetic backstory, something that very, very few antagonists in this series have, and despite everything he does and went through you can still see the Navy hero inside of him, which of course is highlighted at the very end of the film. His fight with Luffy at the end almost feels like a deconstruction of sorts; there's no flashy, destructive final attack, no bombastic music score, just two guys beating the crap out of each other with just their fists. It's thanks to what that fight doesn't do that makes it feel that more intense. At this point in the game I welcome efforts to subvert the standard One Piece formula, and the ending to this film pulled it off magnificently, and came out all the better for it.
! The big flaw of this film is one that's been plaguing One Piece for a while now - that being inefficient juggling of the main cast. As usual, it feels like the East Blue members get the lion's share of the focus, with the Grand Line members kinda stuck as window dressing. Thankfully the problem is nowhere near as dire as it was in Strong World where Robin, Franky, and Brook might as well not have been in the movie at all, but it's still present. The parts where Garp was explaining the backstory to Coby and Helmeppo felt rather detached as well. And finally Ain and Binz hardly had any characterization at all and served mainly as vehicles for fights (though Ain was less worse about this than Binz was, but only slightly). It's a bit of a shame that the last squad of movie villains I remember each getting an equal share of personality was back in Movie 2 over a decade ago.
! Lastly, the visuals. Strong World was already a good-looking movie but Z trumps it no contest. The character design is great, the lines are bolder and more expressive, everything feels so active and alive, and the fights had hands-down the greatest animation the franchise has seen. It was as cool as it gets, and I still think it's a crime that Masayuki Sato and Yoshihiko Umakoshi haven't been put on the TV show in any capacity. This was pretty much the gold standard. -

The scene about the milk tasting different made sense to me. How I interpreted it was that the pesticide was affecting the drinks and making it taste weird and different, so Chopper was referring to whole concept of having something that's "an acquired taste" (which is something adults usually say to kids that don't like the taste of a particular food or drink) and the milk tasting unfamiliar and foreign, much like how a kid would probably feel about a liquor.
Basically the pesticide made the milk taste odd enough to the point where Chopper wondered if he was drinking some weird "adult drink" (alcoholic beverage) instead.
-

That scene seemed like some pro-pesticide propaganda to me. All that product-placement and merchandising opportunities, the movie felt that it was part of some big machine. First film in the New World? More like first film in the New World Order, am I right eh? eh? :ninja:
Joking aside, many of the scenes Film Z felt seriously forced in, but it felt more balanced alongside the character expression and story development.
-
Interesting, which ones felt forced to you?
-
- Nami and Chopper being turned to kids was a little forced, as if it was for the young kawaii girl audience, in fact Chopper, Robin and Brook just felt like missed opportunities, even though there was some good comic relief.
- I know that multiple outfits have became a trait in the new films, but the Armani was is a new level of marketing.
-The Neo-Marine Pacifictas that has no explanation and barely any screen time.
-The sea-train also felt that it thrown in.
They clearly produced Film Z while keeping the audience in mind as well as reaching further to fans of the series, just felt a lot of it was blatant and unnecessary.
-
I like the fact that they brought back the Sea Train. From an in-universe perspective it's one of those concepts that you'd expect would start to spread throughout the world given how well it worked for Water 7. Makes the world feel more alive and organic.
Plus I always liked the aesthetic.

It does reflect on the story slightly, but it's hard to tell why it's significant.Pesticides seem to symbolize/predict Z's extreme justice.
Pesticide kills noxious insects, but at the same time, it is also harmful to humans.
Likewise, Z's justice (blasting Endpoints) kills innocent citizens as well as pirates.Usopp said, "This poison is for killing worms! If you die, it means you are worms!"
This rough logic seems to apply to Z's justice as Aokiji pointed out, "Z's way of thinking is very simple, isn't he?"
@goty:Drinking milk when you visit a hot spring is sort of a Japanese tradition.
Exactly. Bottled milk is sold in many hot springs in Japan, but I don't know why

Hopefully when the 7th Shichibukai member get revealed Z name gets mentioned. So that way he becomes canon like Shiki.
-

I dunno, personally I find the whole thing with Shiki canonically existing in the manga continuity despite Strong World not fitting into it to be somewhat infuriating. Though to be fair, at this exact moment in time, the only problem that prevents Z from fitting neatly into the manga's continuity, is that the Straw Hats emerged into the New World right at the shores of Punk Hazard, and even that issue could be handwaved as just "Nah, it was just a random section of the open sea that was on fire. Then they sailed away from the flaming sea, had an epic adventure to save the world, and then found an island that was also on fire"… Of course, since I seem to recall Oda saying that he would not use the new Navy HQ shown in this movie in the manga, plus how I imagine Aokiji will play a pretty important role down the line and I doubt he's going to have the Straw Hats' inevitable meeting with him start with Luffy going "Oh hi Aokiji, I haven't seen you since the fight with Z!", so yeah... in the long run, Zephyr canonically existing in the manga continuity would be just as infuriating.

Z had this problem, the movie was too ambitious, wanted to show us all the big Marines and it just made the SH look smaller, useless.Just got around to watching the movie and I have to say I pretty much agree with you except that I wasn't even impressed with any of the animation. Way too fast paced and blurry seeming to cover up a lack of good fight choreography with the exception of the final battle perhaps. Z was especially disappointing since he did little more than swing his huge ass arm around.
The story made me feel absolutely nothing for Z even though the focus was supposedly on his character and motive. His loss and disappointment was just quickly stated and not fleshed out in any other scenes as if it was just an excuse to be able to use a strong navy character as a villain rather than to support the plot. Even the strawhats just seemed like pale imitations of themselves and the age changing really didn't bring out anything special save for some boob/ass shrinkage/growth.
More than anything, I felt that the pacing was extremely poor with so many of the scenes appearing random without a strong build up or cohesion. This may be one of the most meh One Piece movies ever other than 7 I guess.
The opening credit sequence was actually pretty damn awesome though. Made me expect too much maybe?

I asked this already in NF, but I have not received an answer yet… so...
What or who is buried under the tumulus with the swords? There is no mention to it in the movie… Z is also buried near it later... Does it have any meaning? -

According to Volume Z, Z's students are buried under the tumulus with the swords.
In front of the grave of Z's students
Aokiji: You liked this kind of liquor, didn't you?…
Z: Kuzan… Do you know the facial expressions that the guys who killed my students have now?
Aokiji: …?
Z: They must be laughing and drinking happily. Someone who kills enemy and survives is right.
Aokiji: …I don't think so...
Z: !! This liquor tastes bad!! I found an answer.
Aokiji: ….. -
So…. I finally finished film Z. Didn't like. But, then again, I dislike most anime movies so my point is a bit moot. Anyway, I do have a few issues.
1. Doesn't seastone automatically negate devil fruit abilities? So, technically, wouldn't anybody hitting Luffy while he's in gear 3 automatically cause him to revert to normal?
2. I hate how wide-scale the navy mobilizes. I understand they're facing a large threat, and his army, but still... geeze. It's like all those vice-admirals just for that? Did they even know the Straw-hats were going to be there ahead of time? What even made Kizaru say such a statement? Also, in relation, why didn't they have any soldiers on lookout or anything?I know I'm being too logical with those things... but they bother me... lol.
-
1. Doesn't seastone automatically negate devil fruit abilities?.
The only thing known that negates devil fruit abilities is BBs darkness fruit. Seastone(which basically does the same as water) just weakens them but they stay what they are like Luffy during the Arlong Park arc underwater.
