Following on from the newly unlocked Luffy Captaincy thread, i'd like to post one mentioning Zoro as first mate, does anyone know why theirs been no official confirmation of his role in the series yet? is it just me or does he do a great job? and another thing is, as the title states; don't you think in his mannerism's he's very much like Ben Backman? or am i reaching here? is this an indicator to what Oda feel's a first mate should be?
Zoro -> Ben Backman

Has it ever been official confirmed that Zoro is the first mate?

to the best of my knowledge, none what so ever up to this point in the anime. i'm not so sure about the manga.

Yiou didn't have to give this its own thread….
But anyway, of course he is first mate. What else could he be? It may not directly say that anywhere you look, but come on. What does he do? Nothing specific. How did he come into the series? As Luffy's first crewmate. Like how they never outright say "Luffy's hair is black."

But Nami acts more like a real first mate.. >_>

I´d actually take Nami as the second mate. She and Zoro are the ones who do some of the thinking but the thinking between them differs. Zoro does more the philosophic thinking while Nami makes the more handy thinking.
And since Luffy himself isn´t birght and more of a straight forward guy, Zoro´s thinking might match his own character more then Nami´s.
Other then that I agree with what Buc said. BTW, wasn´t a chapter title called "The second man" in reference to Nami?

I agree with Ivotas, zoro was the first crewmate and Nami the second. Also I've noticed ben Beckman to act exactly as zoro sometimes on the ship, Sleeping.

I always thought of Nami as the quartermaster. First mate fits Zoro the most, IMO, because they don't really have a defined job other than assuming responsibility when the captain's not around.

but making all these assumptions based on joining order seems rather strange, as i'd say that Sanji is above Usopp (outside of everyone bar usopp's mind). i mean ultimately Zoro's first real interest shown in being a pirate was when he mocked Luffy about changing the flag and even after that it more seems like he's not that fussed as long as he's heading in the direction of experience.
The whole quarter-master for Nami seems feasible though, though we've not seen one in anyone else's crew as of yet so it leads me to wonder if he cares of not, Oda i mean.

Although I think Nami or Zoro are more suited for the role, isn't Usopp the "replacement captain?"
-
Well that's only be his own mouth and alot of that was based on his relationship with GM.
i don't think he deserves to be and i think that as a result of W7 that aspect of his personality/character that feels the need to constantly challenge luffy for power has been supressed, but then that's just me, i would honestly like to see him just fall in line now and give the "Captainnnnnn Usopp" thing a break. maybe start challenging Zoro instead for the "First Mateeeeee Usopp" title.

Only in his dreams. It takes lot more to be a captain then just to wish to lead the pack. And Zoro and Nami so far he proven to have the ability to think of what´s best for the crew while Usopp hasn´t so far.
