The problem with this is that we are describing the majority of Reddit. It's not a minority on Reddit that is like what we're discussing.
I'm not that much on reddit in general so I don't feel all to qualified to oppose your assessment.

There are entire subreddits dedicated to documenting this behavior. If you browsed reddit you'd see it on a daily basis. A simple search if words like black or rap or women or black history month on Reddit would show yo it or even eugenics or STEM. The even William Shatner called them out on it.

Sure, there are some really shitty subreddits, but when you distill it to its essence, there is a very large gradient of users that actively utilize the site, many of whom I know in real life do not fall in the category of "really racist or discriminatory".
Granted, a large portion of its users are white college males in their 20's possibly at engineering schools, so that influences the demographic, but then that would also be discriminatory to insinuate that the demographic there is horribly racist. Especially when most people I know have access and utilize reddit on a frequent basis in graduate school and other demographics for the various communities present as well as being a convenient website post aggregate, I find it hard to believe any overarching statement on the supposed "majority discrimination" of reddit without a more indepth analysis than a brief search. Because that's just as it is, your experience with reddit may be overall negative, but mine has been overall positive (barring some annoyances and grievances I have with people who associate themselves as "redditors"), and neither of us have really any definitive evidence as to the majority.
And while there are some subreddits devoted to posting just terrible stuff, there are few subreddits that document the opposite, whether it be because of positivity being less appealing to the average reader or because it's kind of expected, and r/bestof hardly suffices in that regard. It is easy to find the negative in a subject if you peer into something even briefly, but when media is often saturated with negative reports, it can sometimes be difficult to find the positive.

Weren't you the one arguing that we were speaking about the majority and not the minority? I still fail to see how select portions out of an entirety of a website where thousands upon thousands of comments and thousands of links posted each day can be representative of the majority opinion and statistically relevant.
It's like DarthAsthma said, if we chose to pick and choose things, we could easily slander a group such as the gaming community to be unfriendly to developers or portray them as something such as mysogynistic in the majority.

Yea, that's what I'm saying.
Like I've played the game. Remove almost all of the default subs from your feed. Subscribe only to the fempire and subreddits dedicated to the very specific video games and franchises that you enjoy. But that's not coexistence, that's segregation. When the only way to enjoy the space is to completely insulate yourself from the rest of PAX/Reddit, from the "REAL" gamers/Redditors. That's dumb. Especially when they don't have to resort to the same thing, like it doesn't even cross their minds to do that, because they feel entitled to every space available to them, at least every space that is considered "default" (read: "normal"). And even our abnormal, cordoned-off areas are available for their viewing pleasure, if they so choose to marvel at or heckle the outsiders. Like why would I visit a site that is a regurgitation of my own social experience.
The 'fempire' is a bit of a joke really. They tried to create an alternate, feminist reddit but everyone there was only interested in talking about SJW stuff. So naturally most of the subs within are dead.
But picking and choosing which subs show up on your feed…that's a core mechanic of reddit. There are thousands of active and fantastic subs that lie beneath the bubble of noise that are the defaults. All active users of the site do this, 'cordon' themselves off to a particular subsection of the site almost. And of course new redits pop up all the time, old ones die, and there are always more to discover.
What I'm saying is, there's no sense I get there that there are 'real' redditors and 'fake redditors'.

Maybe if someone did something like racist new posts per day compared to the total number of posts per day to show the trends, then that would be a better meter stick to show how racist or discriminatory it is, but I just don't buy it by doing something so obviously unblind.

Dunno describe me the mood and feel about "reddit". I can only speak about certain sub reddits. Which have been rather normal.
But then I can't say that I've read even 10% of any sub reddit I've been to.

I think this is the main thing about this entire conversation. I should have vocalized my frustration with general blanket statements regarding the nature of internet boards so that it would have emphasized the point that I was trying to make, namely that of no single board barring maybe Stormfront being racist or intolerant by default. The negatives aren't created by the structure itself, so basically grouping all 4chan frequenters or redditors together as people who participate in something offensive by saying that those places they go to are racist or bad, whichever negative label you want to use, is annoying and offensive and shouldn't fly as is. That, I think, is the point most of us were trying to get at using examples that work against the generalizations.
Coby and you are right, credit where credit is due. The main subs do get bad more often than not, and that contributes to the whole clammy atmosphere and the "reddit is racist" feel that you can very easily get from there. I don't know whether it is so prevalent across the entirety of reddit that it constitutes a majority of the populace, but that's honestly nothing but a silly semantics argument. What matters is that browsing the biggest subs easily creates that picture that the site, i.e. the people using the site at any current time, are prevalently racist, which might or might not be true, but which absolutely is the feel that you get there.
But I think that's where I'm asking people to make the distinction, and where many other people bristle in frustration. It's not the site that also happens to include smaller communities that definitely aren't racist that is what's rotten to the core, it's the vocally racist people, be that a majority or a minority, that are, so lumping all the non-racist users together with them by saying that the whole site is bad is pretty unfair and counter-intuitive as far as surmounting segregation and racism goes.
@ Wolfwood: but talking about the positive aspects of discrimination is not fun or debatable.
Eg today I worked with my Kenyan colleague, and nothing negative about Africa was brought up. Yay for me. Lol
Joking aside I know what you mean, but it's not exactly something that makes the headlines now is it. News is predominantly orientated around scaremongering and hot/controversial subjects. It's what sells. (Not that I'm saying we don't get topics that are positive, but it's something that happens less often after we as a people have progressed so much)

I probably should share a little story here.
I have played Left 4 Dead 2 since last summer. And as awesome game it is, the votekicking can get really annoying! You can make one teeny tiny mistake and some people votekick you instantly! And unfortunately, I have noticed that the votekickers tend to be from Russia more than anywhere else. Sometimes they kick you immediately (I presume these guys don't want to play with non-Russians). Sometimes, like I said, they kick you over one mistake. So after a while, I decided to stop playing with Russians altogether. And I always check which country my teammates are and leave immediately if there is even one Russian.
Now I make it clear, that I don't hate Russians, or even Russian L4D2 players in general. I've played numerous times with very nice Russians without anyone voting me out. I do aknowlegde that this is how only part of them act and I have nothing against playing with them if I have at least one friend so they can't kick me out. It's just that… I have very hard time trusting them anymore.
So you guys got any opinions? Do you think I'm xenophobic or is my mistrust justified? Any Russians want to say something on this?

If the world does not blow itself up in the next centuries maybe this is what's going to happen with globalization going on. It's never been easier to find love at the other side of of the world. And I think people with parents from two different ethnicities automatically grow up to be more open minded about and understanding of other cultures. But at the moment multiracial people got it pretty rough when it comes to finding their own place and creating their own identity. There was this one feature in a National Geograpic issue a little while ago that describes the issues and impressively visualizes the changes in America.
Still, I don't know it people were actually more harmonious, even if everyone was mixed. Unfortunately, people have always thought of something to create differences where there aren't any.
