          @TLC:

Genre 1: Top Ten Favorite Animated Films (I suppose Robby's won't change much)

Actually, its a fair bit different. My top favorite movies the fact they're animated doesn't really factor into it, they could be in live action and they'd be the sameish. Animated films I love for the animation can be different in terms of design or visuals, or them being cartoony in a way live action just can't get away with (pacing or action sequence or whatnot). I love Castle of Caglisotro like crazy, and Mononoke and Ratatouille, but they could just as easily be live with CGI and I don't feel they'd be fundamentally changed at their core.

All that said, I can't trim down to just 10. Impossible.

Lilo and Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon (from the main list)

Lupin the Third: The Fuma Conspiracy (greatest car chase scene EVER)
Kung Fu Panda (great action, lotta fun)
South Park the Movie (still great music)
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (THE best Batman movie. And the art style is part of it. The story could be live action sure, but the look is part of it.)
Emporer's New Groove (hilarious and wacky)
Fantasia (the animation is just jaw dropping.)
          Road to El Dorado/Tangled (its a two-pack)
Last Unicorn (art style is amazing)

And from the nostalgia pile of things that might not be any good but go back a long ways…
Dominion Tank Police (Nostalgia, my first anime)
A Goofy Movie (childhood identification nostalgia, no longer on my fave movies list)
          Outlanders
Green Legend Ran (its been years since I last saw it though...)
Tenchi Forever (my favorite Tenchi outing, but it relies a bit on the series, and is very different tonally from the series... and could be live action)

There's also a whole cluster of Disney animated films where I just have no idea where they all fit. Mermaid, Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Mulan, Tarzan, Rescuers Down Under, Hunchback, Robin Hood... where basically they'd make their own list if I included any of them. They all tie together in my childhood so closely with certain memories and idea and overall feeling thats its really hard to break apart and pick out. Emporer's New Groove I can pull apart because it feels completely seperate from the rest and very different in tone, like somethign I had to rewatch and share with others... and Lilo and Stitch just instantly became one of my favorite movies even the first time I saw it, though age (and the existence of HTTYD) have dulled it a tiny bit.

I also always WANT to include Iron Giant because its fantastic, but what can I say, I liked Brad Bird's next two films even better.

That's cool, I like categorizing by genre a lot more than a generalized top 10 list.

                1. Fantasia
                2. Coraline
                3. Grave of the Fireflies
                4. Princess Mononoke
                5. The AristoCats
                6. Angel's Egg
                7. La Planète Sauvage
                8. Kung Fu Panda 2
                9. Ghost in the Shell
                10. Night on the Galactic Railroad

With honorable mentions to Tangled, Tarzan and Tokyo Godfathers.
Though man I think I could fill several lists on this subject alone.

I guess we're all a bit like that, this forum being what it is.

Movie lists came up elsewhere and I'm feeling nostalgic for reasons, and I randomly thought about this thread again. Bumping it because there's probably people that haven't seen it before.

Where was I at… yikes, 3 years ago?

                    @Robby:

                    1. Castle of Cagliostro
                    2. Princess Mononoke
                    3. Lilo and Stitch
                    4. How to Train Your Dragon
                    5. Ratatouille
                    6. Moulin Rouge
                    7. 1776
                    8. Jackie Chan Drunken Master 2
                    9. Almost Famous (director's cut)
                    10.Good Will Hunting

                    New list for 2018.

                    1. Castle of Cagliostro
                    2. How to Train Your Dragon
                    3. Princess Mononoke
                    4. Moulin Rogue
                    5. Zootopia
                    6. Almost Famous (director's cut)
                    7. Ratatouille
                    8. Good Will Hunting
                    9. Last Unicorn
                    10.Wolf Children

I should also throw Lord of the Rings up on there but its just not fair to rank a whole damn trilogy, and I'm not giving it three slots.
                    [hide]
Last Unicorn gets added to the list because I've realized its a movie thats been with me since childhood. I've read the book, bought the book that has the short story sequel, bought the dvd, bought the blu ray, found and downloaded the soundtrack, bought the comic. Something in it makes it personal and true and a perennial for me, and I'm not entirely sure why it didn't make it to the list sooner.
Wolf Children was on the edge before but still too new then. But it's super solid and charming. Zootopia… is just a damn perfect movie. The three minute bit with Flash still gets me laughing.

I took out 1776 because last fourth of july I really watched it with my wife, who had never seen it. And... it dragged. I love the music in 1776 and the dialogue and the audacity of making a musical about the declaration of independance but truly rewatching it I realized that I always have it as background noise, and there are entire chunks I want to fast forward through.
And as much as Drunken Master is Jackie Chan's best action, the overall movie plot is thin. Its the best of a Chan List, but it shouldn't be my top ten.

And, I still love love love Lilo and Stitch but... the quirky wackiness aspect and all the surprises have faded with time over the last 16 years, while How to Train Your Dragon by the same director only becomes stronger. I HAVE to watch that when certain scenes come around and theres a couple bits that are just magic every time and the soundtrack is perfect and just... ahhh. Lilo and Stitch will always have that soft spot along with Goofy Movie and Disney's Robin Hood, but they were attachments of a very particular time and place I think.

I'm also really taken by Kubo and the Two Strings but I don't think it's going to be an all timer. I wanted to love Boy and the Beast after Wolf Children and its so close to being a thing but its second half is... iffy. Fantasia is close to being on the list but theres too many segments that don't do it for me. Citizen Kane is legit super good but its not casual viewing. Princess Bride is super good but amazingly, I actually read the book first and processed it as a straight adventure rather than a comedy so the movie has always been weird to me.[/hide]

I'm not really a film buff, I really only like blockbuster fantasy, sci-fi, and adventure movies, and movies in general don't really connect with me like they used to, so this is tough. There will be a lot of nostalgia in this list. It should also be noted that I have been listening to a lot of film scores recently…

                      1. The Empire Strikes Back
                      2. Return of the Jedi
                      3. Star Wars
                      4. The Dark Knight
                      5. Raiders of the Lost Ark
                      6. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
                      7. Jurassic Park
                      8. The Matrix
                      9. Batman Begins
                      10. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Honorable mentions to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Ghostbusters, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3, and South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut. They could easily be on the list, as everything 5 and on is basically how I was feeling at the moment.
Honorable mentions to the Star Wars Prequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and Ghostbusters II for the Love-Hate sentimentality.

I spent most of the years after Revenge of the Sith (2005) until about The Avengers (2012) watching pre-MCU and early MCU Marvel movies and big budget but generally forgettable action movies like Transformers and Star Trek 2009. Few films from that period still resonate with me. Post Avengers, when I was getting into longer fantasy series and anime/manga, I found modern movies of similar genres to be paced too quickly for me.

No particular order, except for the first one. I've just avoided old movies in black-and-white for a specific reason 1- A Touch of Zen

8 -To live and die in L.A.

I wouldn't even know where to start narrowing it down that much. Somebody throw me a genre of film and I'll do it that way.

                                Romcom .

That's the hardest category you could have thrown at me.

                                • The Apartment
                                • The Shop Around the Corner
                                • Sleepless in Seattle (bringing up the last one reminded me of You've Got Mail, which lead to this)
                                • Sabrina (original version)
                                • Some Like It Hot (entirely because of Joe E. Brown's pure love for Jack Lemmon)
                                • The Seven Year Itch
                                • Coming to America
                                • Bringing Up Baby (when we were little, my sister loved the quasi-remake Who's That Girl and remembering that got me to watch this one)
                                • Roman Holiday
                                • The Wedding Singer

There's other films I thought of while listing these but it's hard for me to see them as romantic comedies first and foremost. Like Groundhog's Day.

                                Complicating things since 2009.

My list of favorite movies is always changing. But I don't think I'd be able to name just 10. Instead, I'll do 10 live-action and 15 animated.

                                          Live-Action:
                                          Raiders of the Lost Ark
                                          The original Star Wars trilogy
                                          Airplane!
Dr. Strangelove or How I learned the Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
                                          E.T: The Extraterrestrial
The Lord of the Rings trilogy
                                          Groundhog Day
                                          Ferris Bueller's Day Off

                                          Castaway

Is it sad that the first Avengers movie is in my top 10 list?

                                                I just love it

Not at all. It would probably be in my top 20.

My list has not changed much since 4 years ago. As I get older its harder to find new FAVORITES that I know are going to stick with me forever and get tons of rewatches but RRR is definitely one of those films.

                                                  1. Castle of Cagliostro
                                                  2. How to Train Your Dragon/Lilo and Stitch
                                                  3. Princess Mononoke
                                                  4. Moulin Rogue
                                                  5. Zootopia
                                                  6. Almost Famous (director's cut)
                                                  7. Ratatouille
                                                  8. Good Will Hunting
                                                  9. Last Unicorn
                                                  10. RRR

*-Fish Story (AMAZING once, and good to watch a second time... but it doesn't work after a ton of viewings)
*LotR isn't really fair for a list since its three movies. Otherwise its high up there.

Other stuff from the last couple years I can't quite place yet, that I'm not sure if it'll survive the long run
                                                  -Cyrano (2021)
-Hamilton pro-shot (probably not a long term thing)
                                                  -Everything Everywhere All At Once

Things I loved but watched too much that I can't watch anymore because I have them memorized

                                                  Land Before Time
                                                  Wayne's World

Hmm, ranking them is next to impossible, but a live action top 10 might include:

                                                    • Bram Stokers Dracula

Special mention to RRR . Its not in my top 10 but I have rewatched 5 times (which is a feat since I dont like movies past 2 hours) and I think I will always remember it with great fondness.

Last time I posted my list was 8 years ago and, yeah, it's still the same. I've seen a ton of movies since then, many of which I really liked, but like Robby said the older you get the harder it is to find movies that will really stick with you.

                                                        1. Star Wars Trilogy
                                                        2. Fantasia
                                                        3. Fargo
                                                        4. The Producers (1967)
                                                        5. Beauty and the Beast
                                                        6. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
                                                        7. Kill Bill
                                                        8. Finding Nemo
                                                        9. 12 Angry Men
                                                        10. The Shawshank Redemption

I feel like Shawshank may drop off my list at some point. Great movie, but it's gotten a smidge tiresome on repeated viewings.

For the sake of variety, here are some movies that I think would be in my top 20

                                                        • The Avengers
                                                        • Alien
                                                        • Austin Powers
                                                        • Liar Liar
                                                        • Parasite
                                                        • Mulan (1998 of course)
                                                        • Stop Making Sense
                                                        • Inception
                                                        • Toy Story 2
                                                        • The Iron Giant

[And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes

@desa Malcolm and Marie and King Richard are my 1st and 2nd place of last year. I don't think I can put them in my top 50 yet.

I will have to watch them again to see if the feeling is still there. It feels unfair because there are 2020 films that i've watched at least 3 times now.

@desa Malcolm and Marie and King Richard are my 1st and 2nd place of last year. I don't think I can put them in my top 50 yet.

I will have to watch them again to see if the feeling is still there. It feels unfair because there are 2020 films that i've watched at least 3 times now.

I still need to find the motivation to watch king Richard but I dont have motivation to watch much right now.

But I think letting it sit for 3-4 years at least feels right before declaring them in my favorites.

Is it sad that the first Avengers movie is in my top 10 list?

                                                              I just love it

I don't feel the need to separate the lists into animated vs non-animated anymore. Movies are movies. These aren't the best movies of all time, but my favorites. To me, there's a clear distinction.
