@Magi:
If Mitsutoshi didn't compare his pseudoscience to real life logic all the time I don't think people would care as much.
He constantly uses the real world as the basis for all these abilities he comes up with.
Just tell me ONE example of something created out of nothing. See? You can't. And that's how storytelling works too: experience of real life -> alterations -> [secret ingredient] -> FICTION!
This happens all the time in all manga. Mangaka sees something cool and goes "I gotta put that in my manga" (See the German intro of Attack on Titan, the exact copypaste of Ash from the Evil Dead movies that Guts from Berserk is, or the Songoku buddhist tale that inspired so many works including Dragon Ball). It just so happens that Shimabukuro is turned on from "science", and so he blends it to his likeness to fit in a freaking shonen. So we don't have just "magic" in Toriko, but and obsession to add pseudo-science explanations to everything, and the more complex the science where he takes it from the real life, the merrier for him (and for me)!
And, as has been reapeated to hell in this thread, that would be a serious problem only if he started doing so in the middle of the story. BUT (excuse me for the caps, but it is a big "but") he did so from day one! I do not recall a single chapter when I didn't found myself thinking "wow that is so ridiculous it is awesome" over some page. There is not a single thing that it is not an (over)exaggeration in this manga, and 99% of these exaggerations are simply obtained by multiplying by 9999 trillions some aspect of our real world.
"Pseudo-science" stands exactly for that which you criticize: things that have an important connection to real word physics/cience PLUS a "what if" factor that allows you to create and play with as many possibilities as you can imagine. If you don't like it, good for you! But can't say the manga is turning into bullshit because of it… because it was already there (at plain sight, if I may add) when you enjoyed it!
The gravity part is just as pseudoscience and just as wrong as the rest. You just think its worse because you probably have a better grasp of how it works than the rest. But, like I said earlier, I don't agree with that argument, it seems inconsistent to me.
I said I didn't like the gravity thing, but only for a personal dislike that relates to the impact and misunderstandings about how gravity works that could cause to younger readers. But, hell, why not, I think I'm changing right now my opinion here. There's no one in Earth that understands what gravity is, so Toriko could be as correct as Einstein. Because, you know, that's what fiction worlds are all about, to make you wonder how different "reality" and everything could be, just so, perhaps, you realize how magical and non-sense your "reality" really is.
Most of you argue that Toriko was bizarre from the begining, but it is only lately that it's become "ass-pulled", and that is of bad quality? Well, even if that were true, someone would have to come and explain me why then is JoJo is so damm popular. Not only it is a Bizarre Adventure from day one, but it also changed complety how its internal world works from JoJo 2 to JoJo 3. Stands? WTF are those? Where is my "ripple" power? But guess what got popular? Stands. And guess who gave a shit about internal consistency? No one.
I dunno why I keep coming back to this thread only to see this same stuff over and over again…
Did you see this week's spoiler thread for One Piece? That was a trully a nightmare… I think this thread is allright. It's just has the "good ol' shit" found everywhere, but at the same time there's plenty of interesting stuff going on and being commented - and that is rare to see in a topic fed in a weekly basis instead of being focused in a specific issue.
EDIT: on the cells thingy. Never wondered how fcked up it is to be composed of millions of cells that, on their own and without your conscience/will (and without direct control over them!), are alive? That's good shit to think about when you smoke weed, and good thought to play with if you are writing a manga with tons of pseudo-science.
