So I thought of 3 possible outcomes to the whole Mappy situatuon:
a) The horses won't accept Mappy as a worty sacrifice, so he decides to go all out and dies as a sacrifice while putting up one hell of a fight.
b) Toriko doesn't accept that Mappy wants to sacrifice himself, so instead he teams up with Mappy to "pound some sense into the King Horses." They recognize their combined efforts and let them pass.
c) Toriko fights the King Horses instead of Mappy, and they recognize him to be worthy of advance because of his will after either actually standing up to them (dishing out damage) or not being knocked down from their attacks (showing extreme tenacity).
Toriko II: Ichiryuu's Slimy Insides!!
-
-
i don't think toriko will be even able to get near them
-
Nah Toriko is around lvl 1000 now, give or take a few hundred, but the kings are well above 6000.
-
Why would you want to get rid of the force that's keeping the bewitching food village from complete and utter destruction by the forces around them unless you were able to invest your own time and energy to make certain that it wouldn't happen?
-
Komatsu's food luck oughta save them, somehow :)
-
yeah i doubt that would happen
-
He'll sacrifice his legs.

! Leave it to Shima to kill the suspense of offering lives to the Horse King (oh hey look the horse species that Zebra and Ichiryuu rode) with Komatsu's food luck fixing everything quickly, but I don't really think anybody didn't see it coming anyway.
! Also lol at attitude sickness. I know it's a mistranslation but it'd be funny to think the hermit's got problems with his 'tude. -
This is just way to ridiculous for me.
-
I thought this chapter was fine;
it sets up a crisis that needs resolving, because it affects established characters
(Horse King species can't reproduce properly because of lack of air, Bewitching food world is forced to resort to human sacrifices to provide horses with air)And it sets up villains as the perpetrators of the crisis
(Blue Nitro prevent Air fruit from providing Horse King with sufficient air)So now, when Toriko heads for the ingredient, theres innocent people at stake, and theres possibly villains to beat. Sounds good to me.

Yup. Sigh, Shima…
The sacrifice cliffhanger was bad enough but this is just...
I pretty much lost all interest in next week's chapter.

Which is fine on its own and the hermit's explanation and pretty much everything up to the last few pages was fine with me, but it strikes me as meh having Komatsu thinking (or at least how I imagined it in my head) "Hey if I poke this tree here with my knife then we won't need to serve frog legs to the air tree" but as long as it's a multi step solution I guess it should be fine. Just irks me that Komatsu's food luck always enters immediately pretty much after any situation explanation.
-
Man, I was totally wrong with my prediction of Mappy fighting. And even Toriko is nothing but frightened by Heracles.
I also love how from here on everything is just going to be insanely over the top. 300 billion tons of air inhaled withing a single breath, which is taken annually? Wow!
Toriko probably will have to face one of the "weaker" blue nitro at the end of this arc in order to deliver AIR to Heracles, who will then let him pass. Komatsu finding another way with his Food Luck would be too convenient, I think.
-
For comparison, our earth has an atmosphere which weighs 5 quadrillion tons. 300 billion is still a fraction of a percent of our earth's atmospheric weight (let alone the more massive Toriko world), but if Heracles was actually breathing on an actually normal basis…

yeah, Komatsu having the amazing ability of Plot Convenience is a bit much. A different method of appeasing Heracles would've been better, but at least Mappy isn't dying. I like Mappy.
-
Damn i wanted to see Heracles having a foodgasm after tasting Mappy's legs.
-

Woah slow down there, i think you're getting your food manga mixed up.
After all, first we have to get through the part of serving Heracles freshly… "obtained"... turtle. That or have Komatsu chop off those legs without flinching.
-
That Horse has one hell of a mustache.
-
Aerovores? Really? lol Even for Toriko that's dumb. The chapter itself was fine.
-
I'm glad that Mappy was able to live though because I can't wait to see him fight.
Otherwise this chapter just felt to ridiculous to me which is strange considering all of the other stuff in Toriko and I still despise food luck.
Good chapter all around though.
On a separate not this chapter sprung up a fury of Toriko>One Piece posts in a manga group I use. -
Komatsu will cook the Air tree's fruit which was said to be a super specially cooked ingredient in chapter 113.
That will most likely provide an excellent meal and amount of air for the horses.
Also it seems Acacia use the Nitro method to get AIR. -
So all of the crazy meteor, laser, poison, mega etc etc "rain" is due to the Horse King simply exhaling?? Christ… lol
-
Maybe Zebra will now get a baby heracles for a pet.
-
So all of the crazy meteor, laser, poison, mega etc etc "rain" is due to the Horse King simply exhaling?? Christ… lol
God forbid the Horse King exhales from the other end!
-
As it can be seen Air is enclosed inside some kind of shell harder than diamond itself. And to think the knife Melk I spent 6 years with to cut it is currently deep underground somehwere in the Slown Rain Hills.
-
Not too bothered by Food Luck seeing there's no way Toriko can or should beat the Horse King. And the chapter did setup a Blue Nitro fight this arc so I'm good.
On the other hand, Komatsu's Food Luck needs to take a back seat for more focus on him learning other cooking skills.
God forbid the Horse King exhales from the other end!
That explains the fertilizer rain.
-
Everything was fine with me except for the 'New born baby hopping onto a rainbow bridge and running around the world.' part. Lol, what?
-
Get used to Komatsu's Food Luck. At least you should be by this point. The guy will hear the voice of any nearby ingredient, this is fact. But no one said that will be enough when Toriko is about to have the living crap out of him beaten to a pulp.
-
Isnt Komatsus knife made of a fanh of one of the 8 kings? Heracles might sense this and see it as a threat.
-
Toriko is awesome today. Now we got history of the Heracs and its connection with the bewitching food world. Looks like the author is gonna run the entire Gourmet World arc on Komatsu's lucky charm status. Fine by me. Just don't overdo it cause Toriko is still the title of this manga.
-
They are not even in the main stage where the ingredient they search for is located and next chapter Toriko already is going to clash with one of the kings. Talk about getting decimated in the first area.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---

The Air Tree foreshadowed as a Special Preparation Ingredient since chapter 113. I say no matter what happens, Mitsutoshi has got his ideas clear.
-
Loving Atashino's umbrella with a face painted on it.
-
whoa, nice find Nekketsu!
I mean, I just accepted beforehand that Komatsu is going to solve this somehow, since that pattern has been firmly established, but it does seem a little less tedious.
After all, there is a difference between somehow magically finding a way to prepare a medical ingredient faster and better than even the most seasoned cooking veteran and something actually being designated as a super special ingredientLoving Atashino's umbrella with a face painted on it.
yeah, it's really adorable
I'm not able to tell, but is there a boot attached to the umbrella? -
-
I bet Atashino uses that umbrella to fight. Or at least this is what the page here seemed to imply.

I wonder how Midora or Joa stack up against the eight kings? Equals, even stronger or maybe still not as strong?
-

Well, the fight between Midora and Ichryuu was enough to form an Emperor Ring, so at least equals.

I guess I need to vent a bit more, but. . .yeah. It's perfectly understandable.
The difference right now is that Shima is putting his all being into his goal of "epater le bourgeoisie" with ubber hazard after ubber natural disaster after ubber beast after ubber fucking rainbow after ubber fucking frog. . .he's pumped up everything up not to 11, but to 1111111111 times 11.
And, what can I say? Even with its problems, and there're problems in Toriko, it's doing its job perfectly of keeping us marveled at its overblown double spreads, impossible climate conditions, super colourful characters and seemingly unsurmountable odds the main characters have to face in the Gourmet World.
Meanwhile, Oda is doing mostly "ok", "decent", even the occasional "hey, that's was actually pretty good!" chapters; nothing terrible, nothing bad. . .but a bit too plain, a bit too barebones, too flat, too unimaginative. It's like Oda's well has kinda dried with time, yet Shima's fucking refilled with a pool of fucking mana.
I know Oda's still got it in him, and I hope he'll get back his mojo again sometime. But as of now, well, this happens. And not that there's anything wrong with it, I guess? (even though as a die hard OP fan it kinda stings. Why must this feel like a fucking competition between Oda and the rest of the world all the times? And why am I stung by it?).
(Now, let's all pray we don't go back to end of Food Immersion temple - Four Beast Arc levels of rushed meh-ness during the whole GW ride, please).
-
Zebra is going to get a major boost from eating AIR. His voice based moves will have its destructive power increased a thousand fold, just perfect.

As a person who loves One Piece, as well as thinks the current One Piece arc has been really good, I agree that Toriko has been better lately. One Piece lately has been setting up for fights for the biggest arc since the war. It will give us info, but overall not much to really be excited at this point. Ever since the last chapter for the Time Skip, I've been super hyped for the Gourmet World. This chapter shows the best aspects of Toriko, World Building and just the over the top awesomeness of the world, mainly the building up of Heracles as one of the kings. So Yeah I would definitely put Toriko over One Piece the last bunch of chapters with all the stuff that has been shown and introduced. Also, I squeed when I saw Zebra and Branchi teamed up together, as well as the full page spread showing Heracles. Some people just get to attached to one series to admit maybe another chapter in a different series was actually better. Also agree with you about the competition part, every series is different and you can enjoy them the same amount for different reasons.
-
This chapter was fine, though i feel that the Heracles spread was slightly lackluster compared to last week's 'OOOHHHH HORSES' spread, but it's still amazing in its own ways. (Loved the full-page shot and toriko almost-fainting tho) Anyways, I can accept the horses 'breathing' as 'eating', but the running on rainbow thing is kinda silly if you ask me… and well... since everyone's complaining, i'd say Komatsu's becoming the duct-tape of the manga anyways, so i bet no one's surprised by this turn of events. But i have to admit that whenever i see him, my hearts screams out 'dude, i miss your old nose'.
BUUT i guess i've gotten used to quickly putting off-putting things to rest in Toriko because they don't last long anyway Always look forward to new things! is kinda my motto for this manga, and recently it's been doing just that, so im satisfied with it.
In another news, needs more Buranchi and Zebra. Plus as someone had said, Zebra better get a baby Daruma horse. That would be amazing.

I have to agree with this. OP has undoubtedly more depth and better (?) pacing but in terms of world building and adventures, in my subjective opinion, Toriko is doing much, much better. In the long run, arcwise, OP might turn out better like oh this Dressrosa arc was so good, but when you read it week after week, you just don't get that excited as you get with Toriko, where you can never tell what's coming. I was thinking about making a thread where you can rank the SJ shonen mangas week after week with a few comments, but with HxH returning, I had more than one week where OP was only third after Toriko and HxH. (To be fair, it has also been first a few times).

I think I stopped taking this series seriously around the time Toriko made the bluntest marriage proposal ever?

Terry, Kiss and Quin also formed an Emporer Ring and I'm sure they aren't on that level yet.

It's not about creating an Emperor Ring, it's about the size of said Emperor Ring. Compare Terry, Kiss and Quin's ER to Ichiryu and Midora's ER in chapter 250.

You're just mad the marriage proposal along with Komatsu flirting with Setsuno's apprentice ended all the gay inuendos in the series.
-
Well… it wouldn't exactly be an innuendo if it wasn't indirect or an insinuation, so, well, I wouldn't say it ended all the gay innuendos :ninja:
-

I'm not mad about any innuendo bullshit ending. The proposal was so out of left field that the writer had a brain-fart after discovering 'air.'
-
There can still be innuendos and shipping for Zebra and Branchi.

That was weird, almost as if the Mangaka wanted to clear it up. Of all the stuff between time skip and going to the Gourmet World was weird. The food crisis was solved very fast, making it seem pointless. It's been much better since they arrived to the Gourmet world.
