One Piece Sells Record 38 Million Manga Volumes in 2011
Eiichiro Oda's pirate manga sets record for most volumes sold in 1 year

The marketing survey firm Oricon reported on Thursday that Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga set a record for the most volumes of manga sold in one year since Oricon began posting its ranking charts in 2008. During the period of November 22, 2010 to November 20, 2011, One Piece sold 37,996,373 copies.

One Piece also took the top four spots for single manga volumes sold during the same time period. Volume 61 sold 3,382,588 copies, volume 62 sold 3,207,568 copies, volume 63 sold 3,073,175 copies, and volume 64 sold 2,652,700 copies. It is the third year in a row that One Piece volumes have taken the top four spots in that category. These four One Piece volumes were also the only manga volumes this year to sell more than 2 million copies.

In 2008, One Piece sold 5,956,540 copies, and in 2009, it sold 14,721,241 copies. Last year, it sold 32,343,809 copies.

2011's second best-selling manga series was Naruto with 6,874,840 copies, followed by Blue Exorcist's 5,223,712 copies.

Not really 30%, since that would assume every volume was bought by a different person and that only one person reads a given volume. But it ignores that those 38 million volumes are for an entire 64 volume series and thus the amount of people reading it is much lower

I love that One Piece is getting the attention it deserves.

I still want to know how realistic those statistics are compared to other manga. Like, are there more volumes of One Piece than other manga? Are they full size volumes comparable to others? Or is One Piece simply that popular in Japan. It's just kind of hard to believe that while One Piece is on top position, it's outselling by a wide margin!

These are tankobons which means bind volumes. You know, those books that has 10-12 chapters in them, different edition usually don't appear until series ended Ie: DB has 2 different edition: tankobon and kanzanban (complete edition). Usually you can use the series length as counter argument for JUMP title if total sales were comparable or using varied serialization rate (most shojo magazine release monthly or bi-weekly compare to shonen's weekly or bi-weekly) which impactts the release of new volumes that makes up the bulk of the sales.

But in OP's case, it's total sale and new volumes sales as well as the consecutive times it broke 1st print, are all too far out that no valid argument can really be made against it as the most popular manga in Japanese history.

If you look to the numbers with a critical view, you guys can see that OP sales is already dropping by a good margin:

1st half of 2010: 15,220,095
2nd half of 2010: 32,343,809 - 15,220,095 = 17,123,714

1st half of 2011: 23,366,030
2nd half of 2011: 37,996,373 - 23,366,030 = 14,630,343

So, you all can see that this last semester was the worst from the last 2 years, it's still better than 2009's full sales, but even so, it's a big drop…

My personal favorite was a man saying that One Piece is generic and childish because the majority of its games are on the Wii compared to Naruto and Bleach being on Xbox and PlayStation. Quite entertaining to say the least.

Some Ransengan nonsense if I remember correctly , and apparently eye liner and contacts becomes a power up for Naruto. 500 chapters and the fox which has been in the story before the story started, becomes a useful power up, Jesus! Drives me crazy, that's why I just stopped caring.

You also have to take the Earthquake/Tsunami into account.

How many volumes did One Piece release this year compare to last year? I know Bleach released less than the year before.
