Console systems now take SO much development time and budget to get the graphic being insane they don't put any time into making the actual GAME good anymore.
Also, World Ends With You. Okamiden, Dragon Quest 9.

Really depends on the title and the platform really. Suikoden (due to it being dead for 5 years) is now a niche title. Unless it becomes a huge hit again (doubt it due to them avoiding the main world and just throwing spinoffs at us.) it'll be limited to the PSP/3DS.
Not that it matters. There's some great handheld JRPGs.
And whoever said Pokemon has run it's course needs to stop smoking crack. It's probably outsold nearly every other game this year.
Yeah plus Black and White is probably the best pokemon game, so saying it has run its course when the last one is probably the best one yet is pretty dumb(I say probably because I dont own other people opinions but to me it is).
Anyway we finally get some pictures of the actual game.

Also a rumour
Also, there's been some talk about a time travel oriented tech system. You'd be able to teach a character in the past a skill and it evolves with that character's descendant.
NOTE: My source on this information is very unreliable. For all we know, this could just be some Japanese fans making a wish-list.
If the rumour is true that could be a pretty cool system.
Looking good man. Looking good.
Cover's great.
And whoever said Pokemon has run it's course needs to stop smoking crack. It's probably outsold nearly every other game this year.
Your point? By that logic, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the best game of all time.
And that's just laughable. Just because a lot of people buy it doesn't make it good.
I never said I was trying to convince you of anything, Getsuga. I expressed my opinion and never said it was anything more, though you obviously inferred it was, for some reason I'll probably never know. That's not my fault, though.
JRPGs that are better than the DS JRPGs you mentioned
Final Fantasy XIII
Resonance of Fate
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Tales of Graces
Tales of Vesperia
Xenoblade Chronicles And once you throw in WRPGs, the list becomes incredibly long.
I'm just saying if Konami had real confidence in the game, Konami would have spent some money and made a console game. Konami played it safe.
JRPGs that are better than the DS JRPGs you mentioned
Aside from the fact you're mentioning games across three different platforms and everyone else was sticking to just DS without including PSP games…. (And really, you're dismissing pokemon. What the hell.)
_Final Fantasy XIII
aka the Worst main FF game ever with near universal criticism?
Resonance of Fate
Maybe.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
1 and 2 were way better, and even though 3 wasn't as good as those two were, its probably better too.
Tales of Graces
For the Wii…
Tales of Vesperia
And for the Xbox. So well received that they didn't even bother giving it a stateside release on the PS3.
Xenoblade Chronicles
Not arguing that one is good.
I'm just saying if Konami had real confidence in the game, Konami would have spent some money and made a console game. Konami played it safe.
The handhelds have a much higher installed user base, and cost SIGNIFICANTLY less to develop in terms of staff and time. It makes perfect sense to work on them for a while. Hell, Dragon Quest 9 went to handheld.
Graphics aren't everything. Gameplay and story is the most important when it comes to gaming, especially RPGs._
If it had "near-universal criticism" it wouldn't have more positive ratings than negative, would it? XIII isn't the worst Final Fantasy. You've clearly never played I, II, III, or VIII.
"For the Wii," ummm, what's the point of mentioning that? Xenoblade is also for the Wii, and you didn't say anything about that.
Just because a game doesn't make it to the States doesn't mean it's not good. Xenoblade didn't make it to the States either, and you, again, failed to mention that.
And I never said "graphics are everything." For some reason, you inferred that. Nothing I said implied that sentiment.
If it had "near-universal criticism" it wouldn't have more positive ratings than negative, would it? XIII isn't the worst Final Fantasy. You've clearly never played I, II, III, or VIII.
I've played all of them. 8 is just fine and the other games are over 20 years old. You're REALLY going to compare a game made on the NES in 1987 to a game made in 2010? Really?
Fine. It's the worst Final Fantasy since Mystic Quest. Which was on the SNES. In 1992.
"For the Wii," ummm, what's the point of mentioning that?
People made a point that the DS, and the DS by itself, had a fantastic library of RPGS. You had to pull from three different systems to list a handful.
Xenoblade is also for the Wii, and you didn't say anything about that.
Cause you listed two different Tales games in a row, for different systems. Stick to ONE system, and list as many good RPGS for it as the DS.
Just because a game doesn't make it to the States doesn't mean it's not good.
It means "the developer doesn't have faith in it", the same problem you're throwing at Konami for developing on a portable.
Xenoblade didn't make it to the States either, and you, again, failed to mention that.
It's still new and should make it here eventually. If it was also a 4 year old game, then yes, that'd be a strike against it.
And I never said "graphics are everything." For some reason, you inferred that. Nothing I said implied that sentiment.
You're entire stance of "console is inherently better than portable" suggests that, since gameplay and story isn't vastly affected by the current hardware, but graphics are.
I was listing really good RPGs. That's all Gatsuga asked me to do, and I did it. The console is irrelevant. Your points are irrelevant.
You're contradicting your own point about "developer confidence" and "making it to the states," so I won't bother to address it beyond this statement.
No, I'm simply stating console RPGs are overall better than handheld ones. If my point were "graphics make them better," I would have said so. You inferred incorrectly. That's not my problem.
No, DS still offers a bigger amount of good games, I never said consoles don't have good rpgs, my point was RPG wise DS had the better ones to me.
I'm an RPG fanatic since I was a kid, I have played most RPGs that exist, even japanese games just because I was a freaking addicted lol, to me DS has the most quantity of good rpgs fo this generation.
I'm not saying the BEST RPG of this generation is from DS, I'm saying most of them are and there is no issue with putting a Suikoden there or on a PSP.
Heck PSP has been getting some nice rpgs in Japan latelly.
My point from the start was the DS has the best offer this generation for RPGs and good ones at that if you don't like like I told you, that is not the general opinion from what I gather, this are the same reasons why I say PSX and PS2 were the best RPG consoles in their generations.

The Hundredth-Year Monster, who appears every 100 years and attacks people (that purple, creepy-looking thing in the above top-right image). The Holy Aionian Empire was gathering troops to face this menace, but cities in the area declared their independents because they were dissatisfied with the heavy burdens being imposed on them. However, urged by the coming advent of the Hundredth-Year Monster, The Holy Empire urged these cities to cooperate with them. How will the force resisting the Empire respond to these circumstances?
*Holy Aionian Empire
The Holy Empire, in order to obtain their cooperation in an emergency, acknowledged the independence of the regional cities. The Holy Empire sought cooperation from the regional cities. But they dispatched an army, using their pledge as a front to unfairly demand submission.
*Scarlet Axe
An underground organization secretly active in various places with the defeat of the Holy Empire in mind. It seems there are even supporters within the regional cities. But when an irregular existence, the Hundredth-Year Monster appears, there are many people who notice this organization's movements. How will they and the main characters be affected?
*The Regional Force
A force that won independence and self-government from the Holy Empire. The village where the main characters live, Teberu [sic], is part of this force. They are bound by an old oath to respond to the Holy Empire's requests for cooperation, but the number of people who feel dissatisfied is not small. It's doubtful that this system of cooperation is equally beneficial to both parties.
*Holy Aionian Empire [again!?]
The greatest force in the world, it was founded in order to resist the "Hundredth-Year Monster." Under the Emperor, Leopherias, it is supported by two pillars: a strong army and an administrative organization.
Tks for the people at Suikosource for the pictures and info and translations as usual.
Btw seems like there is no world map but its more like Suikoden 3 where we hop from location to location from the map pictures we have seen.
Those beast people look cool.
! Also in existence are the imperial knights, the "Shining Leaf Knights, who supervise the emperor's personal bodyguards. This guild belongs to the army, but the emperor can override the commander and give a direct imperial command. There are screenshots from the opening that suggest that the main characters are supporting the empire.
*Leopherias the 13th CV: Tomokazu Sugita
The 13th Emperor of the Aionian Empire. He has a compassionate nature that seriously thinks of the people's happiness and future, and is worshiped like a god in the Holy Empire. When he learns that the main characters fought against the Hundredth-Year Monster, he invites them into the Imperial Palace. What was his true objective in inviting the main characters?
"You've come a long way for us, Teberu [sic] Village heroes."
*Makia Zaphir CV: Miyuki Sawashiro
The calm, cool, and collected swordswoman who leads the Shining Leaf Knights. She is a direct descendent of the founder of the Blue Flash Style, Maximos Zaphir, and she possesses a master-grade skill. She wholeheartedly devotes all her respect, affection, and loyalty to the Holy Emperor Leopherias the 13th.
"If that is His Highness's wish."
! Voice Actor's comment: "I also was allowed to do the voice for the main character as a child."
*Lugado Lugam CV: Ootsuka Akio
Prime Minister of the Holy Aionian Empire. He has jurisdiction over the "Root of the Rock," an administrative organization whose bureaucracies extend throughout the whole country. In addition, he is in charge of the research institution, and could also be consider the brains of the Holy Empire. He fully comprehends everything he should do in a given subject. He supports the Holy Empire as a capable bureaucrat.
"Hmm…It looks like you have a quite a connection to these gentlemen."
(NOTE: I'm a bit unsure on the second to last sentence--the one about "everything he should do in a given subject." I'm not sure if the Japanese means "only one subject," or "any given subject." The latter seems to go better with his character description, but who knows? Also, feel free to come up with a better name than "Root of the Rock." The second kanji, 根, can mean many, many things: from "root" (as in a plant root) to "source" or "origin," to "true nature." And that's only if the pronunciation is "ne." If it's "kon," it can also mean "perseverence" or "indriya," "the Sanskrit and Pali term for physical strength or ability in general, and for the five senses more specifically." (thanks, Wiki!) So yes, please have fun with this. In addition, 岩根, which doesn't have the の in between the characters, simply means "rock.")
*Damdin CV: Hiroaki Tajiri
Commander of the Holy Aionian Imperial Army and leader of the First Branch. It is thought that the scales he was born with are even harder than the metal armor that covers his body. He is a person of conviction, and he does not forgive the existence of enemies to the Holy Empire. If you make him your ally, then there is no more reliable person than he.
"Here I will sever the root of evil that makes enemies of the Holy Empire!"
*Quinelia Liuis CV: Hiroko Ushida
Female leader of the Holy Aionian Imperial Army's Second Branch. She possesses both great decisiveness and initiative. As a direct descendant of the noble house of Liuis, she is also a mother of one. She is superior with a bow, and a brave woman who is called the "Goddess of War" and adored by her subordinates.
"This strategy is the specialty of our branch. I especially have faith in the training of our archers."
(NOTE: I'm wondering if her last name is supposed to be "Lewis" or "Louis." But the characters spell out Riuisu, not Ryuisu, so I'm not sure…I could just look up the names in Google for a good approximation, but it feels like cheating!)
Dirom Rantzess CV: Ryuuichi Kijima
Leader of the Third Branch of the Holy Aionian Imperial Army. He is extremely practical and makes good use of his unit, but it is said that he "lacks the soul of a soldier," and he's not very popular. He comes from a noble family and has a tendency to look down on the common people.
"You greenhorns don't make an appearance in this act."
The Scarlet Axe is an underground organization expanding its support within the Regional Force with the defeat of the Holy Empire in mind. Its leaders were overthrown in an incident three years ago, and now Aaron is acting as a representative. The origin of the organization's name comes from their determination that "[E]ven if we are covered in the blood of our brethren, we will cut down the great tree Aionia." [Yes. I'm serious. The great tree. That's really what it says.] To demonstrate this, the members wear red gloves on their right hands. The members have all lost people important to them, and have vowed revenge against the enormous country. And what about the "Multillion Tragedy" that they all experienced?
*Aaron CV: Norio Wakamoto
A middle-aged man with long, white hair. The leader of the Scarlet Axe, an underground organization that is gaining support within the Regional Forces, touting the defeat of the Holy Empire. 20 years ago, his town was destroyed while he was away, and he lost his beloved wife and child. Because of this, he is part of the organization that opposes the Holy Empire's actions. He acquired his present position by being steadily aware of his footing. [Not entirely sure what this means. Maybe something having to do with being in the right place at the right time?]
"As long as Aionia exists, we will never be happy! That is why we have been formed!!"
Voice Actor Comment: "He has a gift for making speeches and a lot of charisma, and he's sharp. But he's also a very human character who can can get caught up in himself and be reckless."
*Zaveed CV: Takahiro Sakurai
A sharp-eyed young man with red hair. A young man who feels severe animosity toward the main character, who has allied himself with the Holy Empire. His reason for that is that three years ago, he joined the anti-Empire organization in Multillion. His friend was killed by the Holy Imperial Army, and he also sustained severe injuries. Ever since, he has lived with feelings of revenge against the Holy Empire in his heart. [What the hell is it with this game and trees!?]
VA Comment: "A hot-headed mage."
"I will cut down the evil, toxic tree, Aionia, by any means necessary!" [What the hell is it with this game and trees!?]
! Zociom CV: Ryuusei Nakao
A short, stooped old mage who carries a staff. He is an old leader of the Scarlet Axe and Aaron's close associate. Several decades ago, his family was killed by the Holy Imperial Army. Because of this, he lives for revenge. It seems he supervises the institution of mage arts within the organization, but…
"If I am a devil, then what the hell are you who burned thousands of living humans to death all over the town?"
*Rochelle CV: Aya Hisakawa
One of the leaders of the Scarlet Axe, a beautiful woman who is Aaron's staff officer, supporting him with her military and literary knowledge. She adores Aaron from the bottom of her heart. All those within the Scarlet Axe are linked by having lost someone important to them, but her reason for joining the organization is not yet clear.
"Make haste! At this rate, we will not be able to receive Lord Aaron!"
*Regional Forces
Many regional forces, such as Shuraat Town and Orosk Village, as well as the main character's hometown, Terube Village, are carrying out self-governance in the Holy Empire's region. Influential people in their respective regional forces have arrived at a crossroads due to the Holy Empire forcing subordination upon them because of the Hundredth-Year Monster. When the Stars of Destiny meet them, will a transformation happen to bring balance to the forces of this continent?
*Hagar Byarkie CV: Hidenori Takahashi
Chief of Terube Village. He excels at village management and diplomacy, and has earned a great deal of trust from the people. No one has ever seen him take up a weapon, but the way he carries himself exceeds the level of an ordinary man. Because of this, it is feared that if he were to get serious, nobody could best him.
"But we have no intention of following orders, so we will give no one any excuse to set foot on our soil."
*Bohrdon CV: Yousuke Akimoto
The village chief of Orosk and a pretty powerful user of Kenpo. He has an abnormal amount of energy and dislikes leaving everything to other people, which leads him to take the initiative himself. However, this doesn't mean he acts without thinking, and he has earned the respect from the villagers.
"If you had harmed my villagers, I would have to punish you with my fists!!"
VA Comment: "Anyway, he's a hot-blooded man! He's stuffed with manliness.
Edit: Everything is tranlsted now.
I'll find the time to read all these juicy info since I'm busy right now, but damn the character designs are so good. More hype for me!
Thanks for the updates.
More pictures from the guys at Suikosource, there is also some new text info but it hasn't been translated yet, I'll post it when it is.
Once again I'm really liking the characters designs.

Here it is the translated info from the guys at Suikosource.
The transmission stuff looks pretty neat.
@Xelinis:
The hero and his friends, who live in Terube Village, are one day attacked by the Hundredth-Year Monster and sent flying into the world of 100 years ago by a mysterious boy, Zephon. Upon inheriting a technique that can defeat the monster from his ancestor, Torwad, they head to the town of Shuraat. However, they were interrogated and taken to an audience with the Holy Emperor, Leopherias XIII. Meanwhile, the Hundredth-Year Monster approaches Shuraat…
System
*Battle
6 members can be used in a party battle. Like the previous games, fights are turn-based, and in this game additional commands such as "Transmission" and "Strategy" have been added. In the rune world, magic and skills have a set number of times you can use them, and in the previous game, Tierkreis, they were based on MP. In this game, a completely different system will be used. You can release battle commands by using the energy bar above the HP bar. Detailed information at a later date.*Party Formation
Like in other games in the series, you can freely arrange the members of your battle party. Additionally, you can change which characters you are in control of with the triangle button. On the formation screen, you can arrange up to 6 characters in a 3x3 box.*Transmission
By putting heroes of the past into your party, you can inherit their techniques. This system is called "Transmission," and it establishes the characters of the past as masters, and the characters of the present as pupils. During battle, the difficulty chooses the "Transmission" command, then uses that technique. By repeating this and getting the gauge up to 100%, a technique can be inherited. On the party formation screen, the learning gauge is shown next to the hero's "First Form * Judgment" and "Second Form * Wave."*Co-op Attack
On the formation screen is the phrase "W Leader." It is probably the hero and Torwad's Co-op Attack.*Magic
Even compared to the rest of the series, the magic's effects are quite showy.*Regius CV: Shou Hayami
A man who strongly desires to learn the truth of this world, and who introduces himself as the hero's strategist. He is comfortable with using any means necessary to know the truth. Of course, he is a genius in strategy, his battle powers are high, and he even fights on the front lines. According to a Dengeki writer, his image is close to that of Shu from Suikoden II.
"There are too many strange things in this world. Haven't you ever thought that?"
VA Comment: "At first I thought he was like a silent ninja, but he chatters endlessly with the hero (laughter). He seems cool at first sight, but in his body, in his heart, he has a sense of morality, and I think he truly is a good person."*Holy Aionian Empire (200 years ago)
Transcending 100 years, the main character met with his heroic ancestor, Torwad. The wars that concern the Hundredth-Year Monster calls the Stars of Destiny to the past. Upon arriving 200 years past, they saw the Aionian Holy Imperial Army and the Imperial Princess, Astrid, who led them. And they meet both the hero and Torwad's ancestor, Syldis, and many other people of the past, inducing a pre-destined chain of events into the past.*Astrid CV: Kikuko Inoue
The woman with ringlets right in the middle of the package illustration. The Imperial Princess who, 200 years ago, in the Holy Aionian Empire, was called the Empress General. She is proficient in magic, and as the leader of the 2nd Branch, she has achieved victory in the battle against the Hundredth-Year Monster. An aristocrat who is respected and loved by the people.
"Look well at the world's truth!!"
VA Comment: "As an empress, she risks her life for people and tries to protect the world. She's a very strong woman. But deep down, she has a sweet, playful side to her as well."*Maximos Zaphir CV: Shintarou Asanuma
The long-haired man with braided hair to the upper left of the package illustration. The previous leader of the Holy Aionian Empire's Shining Leaf Knights. Ever since the fight against the Hundredth-Year Monster, he has become the Empress Astrid's guard, at the Emperor's insistence. Finally, he left behind the Blue Flash Style of Swordsmanship for posterity.
"If one doesn't know, then any foolish thought will do."*Radneen CV: Kentarou Yamasaki
The one-horned demi-human at the very top of the package illustration. A kenpo user of the Scaleford tribe whose entire body is covered with hard scales. He is exceptionally successful among this era's tribe, and he has sworn loyalty to Astrid, who appointed him.
"You mock Her Majesty Astrid! Do you intend to insult the Holy Aionian Empire itself!!?"*Lete CV: Hisako Kanemoto
A mage who, upon becoming aware of her own lifespan, leads a secluded life in Perie Forest and awaits the moment of her death. Her clothes appear to be like those worn by the Holy Imperial Army's high-class mages, but...?
"Will you inherit my magic?"*Rodric CV: Keiji Fujiwara
One of the common people of Multillion and an archer of the 2nd branch who was dispatched to Fort Zephtiros. Contrast to his intimidating appearance, he easily blames things on himself.
"I don't think you'll forgive me, but I must take responsibility."*Syldis CV: Naoko Yasuda
A genius swordswoman who, 200 years ago, played an active role in the 1st Laspharma Interception War. She is likely the ancestor of the hero and Torwad, and she founded the Blue Flash Style together with Maximos.
"You may be one of my descendants."In the previous issue, I said that the Feather Tribe girl on the package illustration was Lete, but it was a completely different person, LOL. Sorry! m(__)m
What I'm curious about in this issue of Dengeki are those words "the truth of this world." Well, a world where a monster attacks every 100 years isn't normal, so will unraveling the hidden truth of this world become a major key here?
Also, this battle system seems a bit complex. It's not the numbering title we wanted so badly, so even though it means that they want to increase the number of new fans, we wanted them to be a bit more adventurous.

Thanks for the updates, mate. Truly appreciated. I'm a Suikosource forums member myself, but I can't seem to find where all these updates are located.
Its in this tread.

Wow seems like there is a job system now and even the weapon system was changed(cool stuff in my book).
We mentioned before how Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century has a Lost Odyssey style skill system where characters inherit abilities by fighting with their ancestors. Dengeki PlayStation explained the latest issue you can further customize characters using the game’s sub job system. At a dinner event in your game’s base you can pick up sub jobs these let you change equipment profiles like giving a mage a bow, for example.
Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century has a number of classes like lancer, blacksmith, archer, and chemist. The game also has a crafting system where you can create weapons, healing items, and magic stones. You can bring six characters in battle, three masters and three apprentices. Battles are turn based and revolve around a will, which used after each command. A fixed amount of will is restored after each turn.
Konami’s new Suikoden game comes out on February 9.
Damn I really don't care if its a new series at this point, I hope they get this done, the new stuff they are implementing seems exciting.
I hope the Castle halso has some new cool stuff to add, like upgrading it a certain way we like would be cool, like have some 2/3 options.
This new job system and learning attacks from master is pretty awesome it will make us use, all the characters more I assume, I always use them all, I like to try them all but I know people who use them once and then ignore them the rest of the game.
I actually change every time I can when playing Suikoden.
There is also some more characters revealed I will post it later when its translated.
I dunno. Between having a character needing to practice with their mentor and a job class system, its sounds a lot like a Tactics style game… where in theory you can use 60 different characters... but you're just going to use the handful you've spent developing instead. too much customization is detrimental to changing out characters. Unless they make these changes and learn skills very quickly.
Granted, you usually end up with a preferred handful of teammates ANYWAY, but...
Apparently there are multiple endings, from siliconera.
Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century follows the mythology established by Suikoden Tierkreis. The PSP game takes place in one of the many worlds in the Suikoden multiverse. Players will figure out the mystery behind a monster that reappears and terrorizes the land in this title.
Players will gather the 108 Stars of Destiny through different periods of time. As mentioned previously, your ancestors teach you how to fight and you can learn skills from them similar to Lost Odyssey’s immortal to mortal skill transfer system. You’ll also interact with characters and set up mentors during in-game meals. Don’t want to fight? You can escape battles with 100% chance.Dengeki PlayStation also reports Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century will have multiple endings for fans to find. Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century comes out on February 9.

- Not sure on this one but apparently we can't walk around in the castle(I'm pissed I love the castle…)
- Only 20 playable characters out of the 108 stars, obviously I don't like since I said I change my team all the time, I assume other people won't mind it
- People saying the game is good on its own but they just slapped the Suikoden name there but the RPG itself isn't bad
- No Auto Button in battles anymore
- Camera work is awful apparently
!
What happened Konami…
But I'm getting this anyway.
