Maybe Hody will commit suicide, or something equivalent.
Wow, I read the chapter on my break and had to stop at the KKK reference to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Definitely not beating around the bush with this Oda, and I approve because it makes us stop and think of how terrible this all is. DX
With that said, what in the world is Oda going to do with him after he is defeated? He wont reform, even if he needs to be given blood and it's Luffy himself giving it to him, I just don't see his ideals changing. Is he going to live all alone on the ocean floor with the rest of his racist followers? I have never been more interested in the outcome of a villain's lively hood like I am now.
Like I said in the spoiler thread, I want a "Hody's Rehabilitation" cover story.
Straightjacket.
Depressant pills.
Electric shock re-education.
@Nex:
But seriously, we still don't know all that much about what VDD's motives are. Why have an outline of what he wants, but we're missing the meat of his story. Hody's outline got filled in, which makes me believe that the same will happen for VDD. Luffy will wake him up, and we'll find out everything we don't know about him.
Neither VDD nor Hody was ever really a threat, but VDD has always been more interesting, and his motives are intriguing, which is why, I believe, Oda has saved him for after Hody.
I guess I just really don't agree. Vander Decken seems to me like a relatively harmless little whacko, only faintly in touch with reality, who's simply driven by his love for Shirahoshi (which is basically exactly what de Clearambault's syndrome is) and I think having him being the evil mastermind behind all this would take away massively from the point of the arc, which is Fishman-human relations, a conflict that the New Fishman Pirates exemplify an extreme of.
@Superbear:
Hody is not a threat at all. He's a mad bastard, but not a threat. When you think about it, its kind of funny that Luffy being at disadvantage is having a easier time than when he has the advantage. (ex. Eneru)
I wouldn't say he's not a threat. He's taken about ten huge hits from Luffy now without even considering backing down. When they're fighting on Noah Luffy will drive him into the ground but I definitely wouldn't say Hody isn't a threat, especially for all his scheming (killing Otohime, triggering the possible destruction of Fishman Island) if not his raw stamina.
It looks like Shirahoshi is starting to become a little brave, evident in the last page, Its good to see her transcend from a crybaby to brave.
Also, I may just be thinking to deep about this, but can someone explain how luffy is producing the Fire? is it just… rapid movement or something?

True, true. 16 character limit.

The fire seems to be a result of the second gear. His blood is so hot that it burns the air.
I guess the haki armor prevents himself for getting burn to the bone.

You are indeed thinking too deeply about it. It's like Sanji's Diable, or Zoro cutting steel etc, we try not to think about it too much.

While I agree that VD isn't a big threat, to call him harmless is a bit much. Sanji's infatuation with Nami or Robin is harmless, VD's infatuation caused Shirahoshi to be locked up most of her life, that's slightly more than harmless.

Damn strait, if Hodi had met the SH's pre TS he would have destroyed them in moments, and look at what he's already done to FS. Of course if you're talking about Hodi being a threat to Luffy in his current state… not so much.
@The:
I'm 99% sure the explosion is purely for effect. Like how Sanji can kick Bon Clay, and it takes half a minute for the effect to arrive.
It makes no sense, but it looks cool.Also, Luffy used haki reinforcement and G2 already, on the Pacifista at sabaody. This seems like he's just supercharging his G2 blood-pumping to heat up his arm, which combined with armament hardening makes for a nasty blow.
I'm glad to see someone with a similar opinion–Hodi might not have been stabbed! The explosion could say, start at the stomach then the smoke and fire could surround the midsection. I'd like to wait before saying Hodi has a hole in his chest.
This would be a great end to Luffy VS Hodi but that won't happen until the other Strawhats finish their fights.
I'm torn. I kind of don't want this arc to end yet! I want to see more of the other SHs fighting, if Hodi goes down then the rest of his crew must lose within the next chapter. But we're only seen so much of their fights! Zeo only had one fighting scene with Brooke! Chopper has only punched Dosun's hammer (since trading with Usopp)! What about Jimbe and Sanji? Can Usopp finish those "three moves" he was talking about in only a handful of pages. I want more, and yet….
This end page was awesome. It feels like a Luffy end blow. I dunno, maybe Luffy will spend the rest of the time stopping the ship while the crew fights? Weird, but it can work I guess. I'm just so used to the "enemy crew" ending when Luffy ends the main villain.
Oda proves why he is a phenomenon, haters who read manga for fights and boobs, should fuck off and go read fairy tail…

But wasn't he trying to marry Shirahoshi just so he could use her in a larger scheme? I haven't reread the flashback in a while, but I remember him wanting something else originally, but realizing he couldn't get it without being connected to the royal family.
@The:

I think it's fair to say that Luffy is just about always using the armour haki when he fights; the hardening bit is someone more than simply using haki, however. It's essentially haki armour hardening his uniquely rubber body, turning it black, then coating that hardened armour further with more haki. If… that... makes... sense? So when he fought the Pacifista, it was just haki by itself, whereas in this scene he hardens his arm on top of using a haki imbued pistol. So it was different, I think. The "fire" aspect was something else entirely… same as Snake Shot.
Makes sense, in an earlier chapter Luffy heavily implied that he could get his CA haki hardening effect strong enough to resist cutting or piercing attacks. So far we haven't seen any strong users of haki do this, that doesn't mean it's impossible but I think it's unlikely, so I think it's safe to say that Luffy has multiple different ways of using CA.
Very dark, very cool. Luffy is a BEAST.
Hey is that a picture of Alladin up there? Is he the one who busted a kamikaze?
why do people still think big mum is showing up???
oda wouldn't foreshadow this for nothing. i'm not saying the fight will be right after this arc but it is set up
I'm really liking Luffy's new attack but I'm wondering about Hody's fate in this whole arc….after seeing him went insane like that, I don't think he deserve to be alive after this match ended.
It's sad to see why Hody and his friends ended up being like that after we saw their flashback in this chapter but think about it...he is the most dangerous and psychopathic One Piece villain we've seen so far.
When all of this is over, I think the entire Fishmen and Mermaid race wanted Hody to die instead of incarcerated by the Marines or the Royal Guards of Fishman Island but someone would object to that.
Since Luffy's new attacks are named after both firearms and animals (Elephant Gun, Snake Shot, Red Hawk), I think the next one should be this

The Saiga 12.
A saiga is also a type of Eurasian antelope.[/hide]
Interesting, some people are surprised why Luffy's haki punch exploded, but the Kuja's arrows exploded, too, seems like it's an attribute of haki.
Just read and I gotta say..damn.
This was a exposition chapter but a well written one and it pretty rare we get insight from the villains side. Just seeing the world of hatred through an impressionable youth's eyes. All that propoganda and hogwash filling his head and how it shapes him as he grows up was just stunning to read. And the KKK ref, brr. Scary but so true and effective in this situation. I really wasn't expecting it so kudos to Oda on that. But the thing that really got me the most was these assholes actully celebrating taking a innocent life and thinking they've done their race a favor. Just…wow. Gotta say really looking forward to seeing them get theres.
Fukaboshi's speech was very touching. Both a revelation and a plead, added with his expressions along with Shirahoshi and I really felt for the guy. I'm taking this is suppose to be the equivalent of the "OF COURSE" scene from the Arlong Park. Not quite as good as that one but a wonderful response by Luffy nonetheless.
That last page -whistles-. I kinda doubt he killed Hody considering that they're still underwater but if that doesn't seriously wound him, then I really wanna know what those ES drugs are made of. What I loved most about that panel was the stupid look on Hody's face as he closing in, I can't tell if thats insanity or if he was surprised but coudn't react in time. LOL.
So yeah, were at the endgame now. All been said and the reasons have been revealed. All thats left now is action. I guess were back to the SH next week and the final put downs before we head back to Luffy and Hody. Can't wait.
@Nex:
Showing Ace being punched through the chest or WB having half his face blown off didn't cost him is younger readers, so why would something far less graphic cost him those same readers?
Also, here is the definitive proof, in my mind, that Luffy's fist went through Hody. Behind even the explosion is the steam that has been characteristic to Gear 2 since it first appeared:
http://mangastream.com/read/one_piece/82338206/19Whether or not this kills Hody I don't know, but he's most likely down for the count. No amount of ES will fix that hole.
In my opinion, it is now apparent that VDD is meant to be the final villain of this arc.
While the SHs dispatch of the NFP, Luffy will wake up VDD, learn his motives, and somehow beat him without destroying the ark.The biggest problem I see now is that, unless VDD can just turn his ability off, the ark will follow Weakhoshi until it hits something.
This is making em think that Luffy is going to set everything back at Zero by allowing the ark to crash into FI, once everyone has been evacuated of course.
My argument is for Luffy. I don't believe Oda or his publishers will let Luffy become a killer. There is a huge difference between an villian and a hero killing. This is a Shonen (not sure on spelling), a manga meant for an young audience. Luffy becoming a killer does not seem like a good idea on that aspect, but I hope I am wrong.
I think that blow didn't killed Hody, it seems like an effect of the punch or some sort. Most likely knock the sense out of Hody from his psychopathic expression look.
But I think Hody will suffer what comes to him, not saying he gonna die or not but….
Honestly, what Luffy did to Hodi doesn't look that much worse than what Hodi did to Decken (the axe nearly split him in twain!), and he retained consciousness for a while. Think Hodi's out for the count but alive.
Luffy's punch looks to me just like Akainu's hit that went through Jimbei and Luffy's chest - they're stilll alive and kicking…

Shanks and his crew killed that guy at the beginning of the manga. Also, according to http://www.mangafox.com/manga/one_piece/v21/c190/7.html, Zoro has killed though I don't know how reliable the translation is. Shounen Jump has also had protagonists that have killed before with Hokuto No Ken being the first to come to mind. But none of that matters in the mean time, since Hody definitely isn't going to die.
unless it was some kind of impact dial like effect his entire back blew apart
oda wouldn't foreshadow this for nothing. i'm not saying the fight will be right after this arc but it is set up
I honestly don't see where its being set up at >.< The situation looks as if Hodi stole pills that we're ASSUMING were manufactured at the candy factory. this means luffy stopped someone who stole from big mom….which means big mom would be luffy's ally....am i missing something
will Noah be the new Fishman Island?hmm..
My argument is for Luffy. I don't believe Oda or his publishers will let Luffy become a killer. .
I agree that Oda probably won't directly portray Luffy killing someone, but PUBLISHERS?
When has Shuueisha ever stopped a popular manga hero from killing someone?
Do you read other Jump manga, ever?
Gon killed Pitou, Naruto killed Kakuzu, I dont see thats the problem with killing this maniac.
The 90% of the readers are adults anyway.
Naruto didn't kill him; he left him in a badly injured state, and Kakashi then finished him up afterwards.
Also, that guy at the bottom right has Gedatsu's hairdo!

Chapter was essentially flawless. fucking instant classic. Best one of the arc if not one of the best in the series. This kind of shit reminds me why I stick around to continue to read OP after all these years.
Hody is much bigger than Luffy, plus his arms are small too. I doubt it killed him, but probably did massive damage.
Great chapter =D It blew me away, I liked the way Oda showed us how hody and his gang's minds were being filled by hatred and resentment since they were children until they became what they are now because of those bad influences, it reminded me of a quote I once read "Men are born good, then society corrupts them", I think one of the most striking features about this arc is the resemblances with problems of the real life, it is giving the story a deep aspect.
That aside when Luffy said to Fukaboshi "we're friends after all" was epic, was interesting how the fishmen stop running and began trusting luffy even though what they have gone through as to the resentment towards humans in the past.
Luffy's new technique "red hawk" was the best part of the chapter, though =D.
I don't think Hody is gonna recover from that one so easily.
I agree with some of you regarding this chapter has been one of the best of the arc.
Looking forward to the next chapter.
He jumped so he would get in the picture. Don't wanna be left out. And he looks cute so that's a reason enough to be able to fly, like Chopperman.
there in the water you can see the bubbles
i'm pretty sure hody is not killed… would defeat the purpose of the arc... ie -> don't propagate more hate, and by killing hody, this would result in a rebound effect, of a human killing a fishman, and fishmen district building up more hate and more regrets.
The shadow behind hody i think its just because of the effect of the punch, and a KO for hody would probably be enough. What I would like to see like someone said before is the strawhats having friends from some if not all of the NFPs... shows how their most important skill, ie to make friends with everyone and get everyone to like that happen.
That's the only way to break down the cycle of hate down in Fishman Island, however by knocking Hody might be the first step!!!! Very interesting chapter, enjoying Fishman Island Greatly!
Well now a summary from me
All in all I gave this chapter 10/10
But one thing I haveb't got is the air thing... If there was air why Luffy still needed the bubble? Maybe someone could explain it to me
But one thing I haveb't got is the air thing… If there was air why Luffy still needed the bubble? Maybe someone could explain it to me
he's still outside the big air bubble as you can see by Hodi and Shirahoshi still swimming through the water.
So for what is this air bubble? It somehow has confused me this chapter
So what do we learn from this? Dont let ur kids be influenced by senseless racism and hatred. I live in Indonesia and I'm Chinese, so the issue in this arc is very relevant to me

I think the air is so Luffy can do something about Noah. Right now, he's been doing something about Hody, so I guess we'll see the air bubble used in the following chapters

Thanks
BTW
I think Hody will choke out the pills after being hit in the stomach and will revert back to his true form
i'm filled with joy to see the mood here turned up 200% compaired to the last chapter =D also gotta say i too loved this chapter and can't wait to see how oda handles the next chapter =]
But it is somehow strange with the treasured of the kingdoms…
Arabasta had this hero water with the side effect of death and somewhere at FI there we pills which give you strenght at the coast of life span
Thought this was a pretty epic chapter - loved the flashback, kid Hodi is a great design and I loved the whole build up of his hatred and how it made him feel sick to hear Hacchi's story!
Looking at Wadatsume - is it possible that Sanji is playing the long game to try and kick him into Noah and bounce it up again? I wonder, I just can't see there being much point to Sanji's anatagonism of the puffer fish (it isn't as if crushing some extra small fry actually helps)…
In two minds about the final blow. On the one hand, it would be an excellent way to finish things (cannot see that it killed Hodi or went through him - just think it was a cool effect), but on the other it seems odd to have Hodi continue his transformation without any change to what he does/can do/new techniques? I would have expected Luffy to either finish the guy as he looked when he initially transformed or that Luffy would win after Hodi transforms again, tries some new techniques and still gets the beatdown...in fact I had always assumed that Hodi would keep growing stronger till the ES actually killed him.
Seems to me like the point of the NFP's is perhaps to show off the SH upgrades, but for them to continue growing and growing in power so that they aren't comparable to the New World pirate crews. Oda couldn't exactly have the first villains post-timeskip be on the same level as the SH's and he needs to show some progression of power between now and the later, harder opponents - what better way than to give the SH's a handicap (being underwater) and providing foes that have no relativity to future enemies to still allow Oda to show off the SH's and also to justify progressively harder opponents without making the first entirely underwhelming...imo
@MarchHare. This is why waaaaay back at the start of the arc I said I liked the ES concept. Because the opponents have to present some challenge to the SH without undermining their 2 years of training. The villains can't be too strong or too weak, and the ES gives Oda the means to do so. It gives him the means to have a weak enemy getting strong enough to at least make the SH showcase their new powers
@ponx
I agree with u.
Fishmen already weren't a problem for the SHs back in East Blue and with that improvement the SHs have been thru the last 2 yrs, this time the opponents would have been REALLY no match for Luffy+co, so Oda used the ES to make a "stronger" race even more stronger.
@marchhare
I like your theory bout Sanji and Wadatsumi.
Sounds just like Sanji. He has this kind of strategic plans. And with his cookin knowledge bout fish he realized Wadats being a puffer fish b4 Wadats told him that (rather unlikely).
But it would save sum time if Noa bounces off Wadatsumi. And Sanji would point @ his head again and saying stuff like "its not bout the muscles only, u need 2 b clever 2!"
Bout the origin of the ES:
Hody mentioned "heavens". It could be sum high tier of the WG (sumone like Kong or Dofla's "boss") who could have provided that. Or the celestial dragon who signed the petition cause he regreted signing it.
If Hody succeeded this plan, Ryuuguu kingdom would have fallen and their seat @ Reverie would be empty so the nobles can treat the merfolk as they please.
It has to be sumone who would have benefitted from such a civil war. And I think I can tell its not Big Mom. Could also be another yonkou who wants control over FI.
BTW: Has anyone an idea what happens to Caribou in the end?
IMO he is like the captain "Nezume" (spelling? I mean captain rat!) in Arlong Park.
He also is sum kind of "moneylovin" villain but will get pwned like nothing in the end of this arc.
I wonder if Hody can stand after Luffy's final blow. It looked like a final blow and Luffy seemed confident when he said he'd end that in an instant.
But history often proved us wrong, on the other hand this time Luffy learnt badass skills the last 2 yrs, so its very unlikely 4 Hody to survive that or even being able to fight any further. Luffy put an Akainu on him after all.
So nao Noa needs to be stopped. I hope Shirahoshi's ability will come into play now. After that fighting stuff I wanna know whats up with that poneglyph.
This chapter Arlong had sum information 4 us bout the ancient times.
Merfolk got "exiled" into the depths of the sea a long time ago (at least thats what I interpreted from that translation).
Awesome chapter. Luffy's red hawk looks pretty powerful, and will probably be more so out of the water. It doesn't look like his fist went through Hody- it just looks like the typical impact force going through the target. The fire and force went through Hody and he probably has some major internal injuries, but I don't think there is a hole. Also Shark organs are organized differently so that might come into play.
Luffy was telling Shirahoshi to stay close to him for protection. If she stays close and gets on board the Noah with Luffy, she'd be touching it. If I understand his ability, Decken would have to throw the Noah again. Of course he touched Hody last with his free hand so maybe Decken will make Hody go squish. A Villain killing another villain isn't as anathema as Luffy offing someone.
If Hody survives this all, I only see Arlong being able to bash any sense in his head. Jinbe had been working as a Warlord, but Arlong was still closer to Hody's ideal role model of hate. Arlong may not love humans, but perhaps he has gotten a little closer to Fisher Tiger's balance of living with hate. If the fishfolk and merfolk end up getting an island, that might quell some of the general hate. I get the feeling that being forced to live below the surface is a key point. As long as human contact is limited, it is so much easier for each side to demonize the other and use them as boogeymen.
With the racial tension going on, segregation is just hammering in the differences. Once they hit the surface and start mingling they should be able to figure out that it isn't race vrs. race, and that there are some bad people out there no matter what race they are.
Luffy is already bringing them "To Zero". Breaking down the prejudice so some mutual understanding can start to grow.
Slavers and security are the big hiccups on a new island. Though maybe the New Fishman Pirates could find a niche kicking the arses of Slavers and raiders.
@ponx does sound like Oda doesn't it - he is pretty cunning with his storytelling and he rarely shoots himself in the foot even when it comes to progressive elements.
@Roronoa Zacho - makes me wonder just how strong Arlong could have been had he fought in a similar environment to Hody. I do like the fishmen, but I think it pretty strange that they don't have similar level characters to Whitebeard, Shanks, etc, i.e. why do humans have this great variance of strength, but the fishmen don't really - sure they have less numbers…I dunno - I hope there will be some super-powered fishmen in the New World.
At any rate, I am hoping we get to see something more from the NFP's, so far they haven't exhibited much in the way of unique attacks bar Ikaros - hope the ES takes some of them to new levels of transformation and power before they either get beat or their bodies can't take the strain.
As for where ES comes from, it seems most likely to be Dofla, but I would love it if it was Big Mom. Reason being that the Yonkou would be already mostly aligned with Luffy as it stands - Shanks is on his side and so isn't a threat and it was made out that Big Mom would be as well due to the Thriller Bark incident - so only Kaidou and a replacement for Whitebeard would actually represent the highest level of threat in the New World - wouldn't it be great if it turned out Big Mom was bad ass and her daughter just didn't know it (and that her feelings of familial rejection manifested in a need to get married haha!). I woudl love Big Mom to be a villain and for the sweet factory to be an element of some kind of drug operation.
Hope people realize that noah is half the size of fishmen island, wadatsumi is miniscule compared to it. He can blow himself up all he wants, he will never amount to a size that can stop noah in any way. The reason for sanji to aggrevate him was already shown; have wadatsumi knock over and hurt his teammates.
