@Urouge:
That scene never made it to the manga in the first place. Going back to Marineford itself was a total shocker reveal, but the anime just kinda blew their load early.
http://www.mangareader.net/103-55198-11/one-piece/chapter-591.html is the last page we got in the manga before we found out what they did.
Oh I know. I meant that when I said it was "extra." It was a reveal that Oda waited on, but in this case, I think Toei did it to bring viewers back. I recall thinking, when I was reading the manga, that Luffy was just talking about the same thing he'd been all along, returning to SA. But to be honest, I didn't give his direction a whole lotta thought through the week as I waited for the next chapter, and as a result, and was very surprised by the reveal, because it was so much cooler, in the manga, later.
Here I was at first taken aback that they "ruined" that particular thing–in general I am totally against changes in the storyline/plot from one media to the other, and view them as rather arrogant on the part of the changers, but a friend once told me that translating things to different media can require changes for different reasons, and as I thought about it, I realized that for Toei, producing a TV series to which most people aren't as committed as they are for the manga (you actually have to make the effort to go out and buy the manga, so there's a certain amount of commitment built into your audience right there) they need something that will make people chose not to turn the channel next week. Coming off of the war, and Ace's death, and all the trauma, having a cliff hanger where he says he'll return to Marineford is, in and of itself, I would argue, rather titillating. People are now definitely wondering why Marineford of all places, especially after what happened, and why would Rayleigh suggest such a thing, and what on earth can he do there that will help him protect his friends, etc. I think for a TV series it was a great hook to bring people back. It will keep them wondering all week.
Eh just my 2 cents, lol.
And yeah, Perona took her capability to be annoying to a whole new level, and Brook's song was outstanding.
