They kept the snow. Good job, Viz. Good job.

Awesome! It's a shame they only kept Zoro for those four volumes. I remember when VIZ had balls and stuck to their guns in spite of whatever the dubbing companies did. In Yu-Gi-Oh! almost every character's name was changed in the dub and they still kept the originals. Same with Dragon Ball, even though its changes were minor. (Krillin instead of Kuririn, Tien Shinhan instead of Tenshinhan, etc.) Their One Piece manga would have done fine with just one naming inconsistency, especially since that dub would eventually be forgotten and replaced with FUNi's version… Now they just look silly. :getlost:
Maybe one day they'll release volumes with Zoro's name brought back the way they re-released the Inu-Yasha series in unflopped formats years later. :ninja:

I think that having a flipped manga is just a tiny bit worse than having Zolo instead of Zoro .
Seriously, Zolo or Zoro doesn't matter in the slightest.

What do you mean by having a flipped manga?
-
What do you mean by having a flipped manga?
That the order is literally in reverse, that you would read it like an American comic (left to right)
Text within the drawings would be mirrored (ex. a shirt that says MAY on it would read as YAM flipped)
-
So beautiful. They must be rare now.
I honestly think they are. These were located at thrift stores and used book stores.
I read through the first half of Volume 1 last night and… why couldn't you have stayed with this translation style and quality all the way through Viz?...
I mean, they got the best translator possible on it NOW, but... the damage has been done...
-
So what will it take to get a special edition that fixes everything? I know Kirsch promised it but he said it will more likely happen after the series ends, which is still years from now. It needs a sales boost bad, especially when it's getting beaten by manga that ended years ago (Sailor Moon and Death Note).
-
Support the manga now. Support the anime. Tell other people. Get them to support the series. Continue to support. Yes, we are probably twenty years away from having the special edition rerelease. Hopefully, with Naruto and Bleach ending soonish, One Piece can rise to the top. With it being on Toonami, and starting around Water Seven, people will forgive 4Kids's mistakes and realize that the story is much better than they thought.
-
Y'know, even though I don't believe I have the old Zoro issues, I do think I have the Zoro translation in the main Shonen Jump Manga from years back.
-
I have the first five volumes or so, a big box full of years worth of Shonen Jump mags and a subscripton to SJ Alpha. Pretty happy with my Alpha subscription. They brought back the mild swearing that was done away with in the more-easily-accessible-to-children-print-publications and the chapters appear to be uncensored too. Better picture quality than the fan scans and the translations seem to have improved drastically too. 'Zolo' rarely appears anymore, whether it's because they simply don't bother to say the character's name as often in-universe or because the translators want to minimalize the naming discrepency as much as possible now that the FUNi dub reverted to Zoro.
Having said that, collecting all 50+ VIZ manga volumes is one hell of a task. And the thought of them possibly releasing 'special editions' that revise the name change, cut down on minor censorship in the previous volumes, and offer a better translation than before makes me even less willing to shell out the dough for all the print GN's now. Even if that day is twenty years from now. :ninja: As far as getting more people into One Piece–even when you can do that those people will usually resort to fan scans or watching the sub online anyway. Free apps like Manga Reader on iOS and eManga on Android will cause your typical fan to bypass an Alpha subscription which supports the industry. I wanna get more people into One Piece so it can do well over here, but VIZ actually has to help themselves too. :getlost: They could easily have those illegal mobile apps removed (especially on the iOS App Store, which Apple exerts more control over than Google does its Play Store).
Hopefully the Toonami airing can get more people into One Piece, and even if DVD and manga sales don't skyrocket as a result then at least they'll get the ratings and there'll be more hope for video games and merchandising.

I've only started collecting random manga volumes over the past three years. Aside from Zoro/Zolo, what was different about the translations in the earliest releases?
-
I thought the early volumes were laden with stereotypical pirate talk?
-
Oh yeah, there is that. The dialog really wasn't too bad, but it did get cheesy at times.
-
In the Dragonball portion of the DB/Kenshin issue offered today on Free Comic Book Day, they mentioned that the new omnibus will finally be dropping the "Z" after Volume 16, so these new 3-in-1's will remain Dragonball throughout the entire run, which I don't think was ever officially confirmed until now. The big header under the advertisement of the first omnibus read "Remastered, Uncensored, and in a new collectable format." No idea if that means Popo will have his lips for the first time in a VIZ publication, or if it just means the boobs are back.
-
Or flipping the finger? Hmm. Interesting. I think I may now finally buy dragonball manga if this is true.
-
Man, I just bought all of Dragon Ball, but I might buy it again if it's fully uncensored and to have it only as Dragon Ball.
-
Popo was uncensored in the original releases, AFAIK.
-
The high quality Vizbig editions are censored
The low quality omnibus volumes are uncensored
Serious fans of the series / collectors would want high quality since they prob. already have the original individual volumes. They would probably also be interested in having the series uncensored. So this makes perfect sense.
-
Got Vol. 66 today also got Berserk vol 1
-

That would be a bad idea, because people wouldn't bother getting into One Piece if they had to pay for each volume. I know i personally wouldn't have but now that I have read and watched all of One Piece online I actually try buying the volumes now but if i never got into One Piece with illegal apps then i wouldn't have brought volumes.
It's hard to explain but the free manga viewing is what gets people into the series, then thats when they start supporting it and buying volumes because they like it so much.

I don't mean that they should embark on a relentless crusade to rid of all online-manga. Truth is, no matter how hard they try, they won't be able to stop it anyway. Let's be real, most of us here got into One Piece with fansubs and scanslations.
But the mobile manga-apps? All they have to do is ask Apple and Google to remove them from their stores, and Apple is especially compliant with removing illegal apps. Reading manga (for free) on your tablet is really a luxury. When we first got into One Piece there wasn't even such a thing as an iPad. They don't have to take all free manga off the Internet, but at least make the pirates read it on their PC's, while making them pay for the luxury of reading it on their iPads/Androids.
The scanlation sites make buying SJ Alpha sound like a dumb idea. But the free manga apps on iOS and Android make it a really dumb idea. I bought Alpha myself because I like the translations and wanted to finally show the industry some support, but I could just as easily read the chapters with MangaReader on iOS for free without paying a cent–and most potential customers are just gonna do that.
-
Wow I just read this issue of sja and I have to say. I'm impressed that the kept the middle finger AND the boobs
-
VIZ put out Cross Manage Volume 1 today also.

Like what? I hate censorship! But I already started buying the volumes, so I'll pull this through (and of course, right now the boxed edition has to surface -.-"). There are still the Omnibus editions though, so it's all good :)
And my version has the subtitle "East Blue" (unlike the volumes posted in the pics above) and yeah, Zolo T_T""" -
Got Vol. 66 today also got Berserk vol 1
Is Vol 66 the end of Fishman Island? Is it available in stores or did you get it early online?
-
It's available in stores already and of course on VIZ's digital store.
Volume 67 comes out in a week or two though.
-

It's towards the end of when Luffy destroys the Noah, and it goes through the whole party and everything, and it has the 2 first chapters of Punk Hazard.
-
Thanks guys, didn't realize I was so behind. Gives me a chance to run in and get another 57 as well. My 1 year old is obsessed with taking only my One Piece volumes and flipping through them, ripping pages in the process. She better be that interested when she can comprehend the world around her.
-
Got volume 67 today looks good.
-
Mine is coming in the mail. Can't wait for Punk Hazard hardcopy chapters! I'll be rereading the arc with this.
-
I got my copy yesterday. Barnes & Noble had them early.
-
kinda weird seeing "Shurororororo" for so long and now in the Viz volume it's, "shu ho ho ho"
-

They should have just changed it to shulolololololo.
We already have a character laugh (at least in the viz version) with that laugh.
-
Sorry to go off topic but I read on the previous page you guys were talking about an uncensored Dragonball being released? I found a collection of the first three volumes uncensored (ShonenJump on the cover) but I am wondering if the whole series is being released in this fashion?
Also thanks to the guy that pointed out the Amazon discount for OP #67 & 68!!
-
Just saw the Dragon Ball omnibus in B&N. Just a heads up, the artwork is still censored. I don't know how big of a deal it is for you guys to see Bulma neked. Maybe not that important, but don't buy the 3-in-1 volumes for unedited artwork. Old print copies of the early volumes are the only uncensored ones in terms of artwork at least. Maybe when they get to the Namek arc they'll go back to the early translations of the dialogue that were riddled with curse words removed in later printings / Vizbig. I guess that's what they could mean by uncensored?
-
Viz admitted in a tweet that the Dragon Ball 3-in-1 WAS supposed to be uncensored, but some edited panels slipped into the transfer. They say they're pulling them and will reprint new copies that are uncensored.
-
Anyone know why the arc title is "New World"? Surely 61-66 should have been Fishman Island and 67 onwards Punk Hazzard. Getting the feeling that New World will be permanent. Makes sense if so, just a little out of place with the arcs being in previous volumes.
-
So, Law's move name changed from "Shambles" to "Chambres" in volume 67; could anyone clarify why?
-

That… doesn't make a lick of sense.
In English, a "Chambre" is just and old way of spelling Chamber.
In French, it means bedroom.Just because Law's main attack is "Room", doesn't mean that he's referring to a French bedroom. In fact, first time he used Shambles, the intent was clear as he mixed up the body of the Marines in his Room. God damn it Viz!
-
Perhaps the attack was supposed to be a double-pun. It kind of sounds like "Chambres" when Law says it…of course, that could also just be Japanese futility at pronouncing certain English words. And it also happens to sound like Shambles, which sort of literally refers to what's happening to his opponents' bodies.

Oh silly BatDan. It was Shueisha and Oda that told Viz it was Chambres and that is why it was used. Originally Viz did use Shambles. That is why it was changed.
