Just announced at the PS4 Launch Event with a teaser trailer, it was simply titled Uncharted at the end.
Uncharted (PS4)
-
-
Looks interesting for a teaser.
-
Oh damn, they uploaded it quick. I guess Sony had it ready.
-
Welp
-
Most people are saying this is a prequel starring Francis Drake… how in the hell? Listen to the guy talking, he doesn't talk like someone from that time period.
Also bad, but expected, news. It's the same team that did Uncharted 3...
-
Amy Hennig is still there though.
I was probably one of few people who actually thought 3 was maybe even a bit better than 2. Yeah, sure, the plot for the most part didn't make much sense, and it did kinda feel like they started with the set pieces and sorta built everything around that. Though no one can deny that the set pieces were freaking awesome. The action and combat in general was improved, the puzzles were fun and for the most part very difficult, and the characters were all fun and enjoyable. Marlowe could have used a bit more screen time though, and Talbot a lot less.
Anyway, when it comes to this game, it's definitely not a prequel. Well, not a prequel starring Francis Drake anyway. I think it's possible that the person speaking is some sort of old partner of Nate's, and he somehow took the fall and now he's back to take revenge. Something simple like that. And there's obviously going to be pirates involved.
-
Oh shit, new Uncharted game? This is the PS4 system seller right here! I'm definitely gonna buy one the day that this comes out. This is gonna awes–
It's the same team that did Uncharted 3…
…..Hype deflated. I'll be sure to keep my anticipation to a minimum, after the massive disappointment that was Drake's Deception. Still, I'm a sucker for this series, so I'll probably at least rent at some point.
-
Hopefully Amy Henning had time to think about what you she did or didn't do with Uncharted 3's plot.
-
Amy Henning flat out confirmed in the very videos you could unlock in the game that they developed the set pieces first and then wrote a story around them, noting it probably wasn't the best idea but that they didn't think it was a bad one per say. If Uncharted 3 had a solid story it would have been just as good as its prequels. Everything else was there to make a great Uncharted game, the story was just a godawful mess. I am still stunned at the plot holes and smirk worthy scenerios just so they could do the play section they wanted.
A perfect exmaple of this nonsense is the Talbot chase sequence. They wanted a chase sequence, they created the chase sequence, they just had no idea who to have you chase. At the end of the day they finally decided it'd be him so they have Talbot, who's surrounded by armed escorts, shit himself and take off through the city when Drake (who just woke up from being drugged) lunges at him. Ultimately ending with another character magically appearing at the "finish line" to knock Drake out and start the next section of the game.
I thought Uncharted 3's quality was finally explained when Naughty Dog came out that they split the team in half, so only half of the usual suspects worked on Uncharted 3… but the Last of Us was amazing so that shoots that theory to hell. I guess it all comes down to the individual talents on both sides.
The set pieces in UC3 were awe worthy and were a blast to play... but there was no substance holding them together. I really can't fathom how Amy wrote that. Maybe it really does come all down to Bruce and Neil's directing. They had nothing to do with Uncharted 3 as they split the team and worked on the Last of Us which was, surprise, really fricken good.
-
So that explains the pointlessness behind Drake trying to save Sully from the pirates who players knew never had Sully to start with.
-
I, for one, thought U3 was also vastly inferior in terms of gameplay as well. Gunplay was less tight, AI was more confused, and those unending fistfights…
As for the narrative, I posted this a while back as just a partial list of questions I had:
-How did Talbot get shot and survive? Without damage? And why doesn't anyone care?
-Why are there evil giant spiders in France and Syria?
-What's actually in the brass bottle in the end? Is it actually supposed to be a Djinn?
-Why is there a permanent sandstorm around Iram of the Pillars?
-Why did the museum at the beginning store Drake's ring right next to the object the ring unlocks? Why didn't anyone else figure this out?
-Why is the evil organization so intent on stealing something that causes people to hallucinate? Hasn't the story pretty effectively demonstrated that they've already got the whole hallucinogen thing figured out?
-What's the point of the whole ship graveyard/cruise ship sequence? Why did the game make me leave Yemen only to return to Yemen to leave Yemen? Why does Drake ever believe the pirates have Sully? And why do they, Bugs Bunny style, make a fake Sully in one of the storage bays?
-Where did Drake get the words he apparently decrypts when he first gets the astrolabe?
-What was the point of the whole talisman that you spend the first half of the game assembling? It has a symbol on it, but how in the world does that tell Drake where he's supposedly going?
-Why in the world does Elayna, one of the rare independently-minded characters in video games, go all weak in the knees when Drake basically tells her the marriage is back on? Has she had any reason to believe he's made a legitimate change? -
Yes, the villains entire motivation is bull. I hated that. You're led to believe they're after the brass jar because of the hallucinogenic drug stored within so that they can use it to further influence the world as the secret organization… but they already HAVE a potent hallucinogen that they used throughout the entire game and a lot of control in the underworkings of society.

Has she had any reason to believe he's made a legitimate change?Well, Amy Hennig explained the first one with him having a bullet proof vest, and him just disappearing when he went into the alley in Syria was due to him having a zip hook or something like that. And the characters does act surprised that he survived, but they never really mention it. He's supposed to be an illusionist like character, but with tricks and gadgets instead.
The other ones, yeah, blatant flaws. That doesn't stop the game from being a blast to play.

Yay! Excellent storytelling there!
And the characters does act surprised that he survived, but they never really mention it. He's supposed to be an illusionist like character, but with tricks and gadgets instead.
Which adds another one, that moment with the tarot card where Chloe and Nate freak out for a second and…well...there's nothing else about it.
The other ones, yeah, blatant flaws. That doesn't stop the game from being a blast to play.
Having recently played U3 again, I'm afraid I still have to disagree. It has so very few extended gameplay sequences that aren't interrupted by something wacky, and there are so many sequences that are just horrible to "walk" through in replays. I'd rather play any of the other Uncharteds again, including Golden Abyss.
That said, still extremely excited for U4. It seems clear that Naughty Dog has seen past the initial wave of massively positive reviews of U3 to see the undercurrent of fan dissatisfaction, both in the narrative–which they've publicly mentioned having some problems--and in gameplay, with the U2 control-mode added in after the fact.
-
I thought that U3 had by far the best villain. And the story of why Drake said that he was related to Francis Drake was nice…easily the 2nd best game to me.

This post is deleted!

Uncharted 3 has so many missteps in, I honestly think it could warrant a Harry S. Plinkett length analysis/review…and yet tatermoog still managed to list off half a dozen other issues I'd never even considered before. For a while there, I thought Drake's Deception was well below Among Thieves, but superior to Drake's Fortune. I don't even know if I think that anymore, since I've beat the first two multiple times. Uncharted 3? Got it on release day, finished it, never touched it again. I think I'll replay it on hard (with my expectations next to zero), and sell it. I don't even care that it won't be worth much, since I doubt I'll have any use for it after that. And just for the record I NEVER sell games.
A perfect exmaple of this nonsense is the Talbot chase sequence. They wanted a chase sequence, they created the chase sequence, they just had no idea who to have you chase.
Ah, yes. I remember watching them discussing this. Whoever they were talking to was acting all excited about it, like they were somehow under the impression that this was a good thing.
-

Did the game ever outright confirm that the hallucinogen was even in the jar. I mean it becomes obvious once you remember what happened to Drake (again) and Nate's line to Sully after they both wind up in the water towards the end. Because all I remember after Nate and Sully sunk the jar was what was in it?
I thought that U3 had by far the best villain. And the story of why Drake said that he was related to Francis Drake was nice…easily the 2nd best game to me.
Hope you mean Talbot and not Marlowe.
-
Hope you mean Talbot and not Marlowe.
I meant as a whole antagonist…but Talbot>Marlow. They were the only ones that messed with Drake psychologically.
-
Another thing I hate about 3, but this is more my opinion than an actual error, is they threw Nate's ancestry out the window. In the earlier games he's the descendant of Francis Drake, walking in his ancestors footsteps. But in 3 it's revealed that nope, he was just a poor little orphan boy who started claiming he was Drake's descendant so that his life felt like it had worth. Which as an adult and still claiming that just adds a level of creep and nut to Nate which he didn't need, or should have.
I consider it a big misstep.
-
What about the logic behind the enemies? Some of them were just kinda…..ridiculous.
Hey I know we are in a sinking ship/burning house but lets take priority in killing this guy instead of trying to not die ourselves! YAAAAAAAAAAY!
It was just embarrassing.
-
The funny thing about this is that it's all right for Uncharted to be a little absurd. I can play through U1 and U2, never really have a clue why I am where I am, and fight a ridiculous amount of enemies and have a great time. U3 just snapped even the thin line of belief you need to enjoy one of their games.
Mainly, I'm just happy that this series is getting continued instead of TLOU, at least at the moment.
-

Marlowe had so much potential. I think she has an awesome design, and a nice voice, but she should have been more involved in the story. I still think Roman is the best villain in the series.

Hey if they're going down they might as well take Drake with them

Roman kind of suffered the same problems as Marlowe intresting villian pathetic death.

Corrinne Yu has quit 343 Studios and has officially joined Naughty Dog. If you don't know who she is she is a graphics coder, and is considered the main reason Halo 4 is so graphically impressive. Many are considering this a huge deal.
-
It's not like Naughty Dog already isn't pulling off miracles with their games. They should use the new power they have to try something a little less hallway-y though. They should try something new.
-
Todd Stashwick (the actor who narrated the teaser) has posted several images of his mo-cap session which has confirmed two things: The game will be set in modern times due to the presence of modern weaponry, and Naughty Dog is still using their old-school methods of doing facial-animation by hand due to the lack of motion control dots on the actors face. He's covering the character initials on his mo-cap outfit (for example Nolan North's says "N.D.") so that leads to the assumption he is a known historical figure, most likely Robert Drury as several hints in the teaser suggests. Question is; what's he doing in modern times?
And most importantly we appear to have gotten our first look at what the game may look like graphically via a headshot render of Stashwick's character.
-
The self shadowing looks pretty good. Lots of games have issues with that for some reason. I think a lot of the early bullshots of the Uncharted games always have really good self shadowing and then the final game pretty much entirely gets rid of them, so we'll have to see how it actually looks in game. If the game is going to be 1080p, too, I think they're going to have to start doing their cutscenes in real time too, which I think most of the Uncharted games' cutscenes are prerendered, because the games before already were pretty large, and 1080p videos take up a lot of space.
I still don't understand why prerendered cutscenes are still a thing.
-
Yeah, that's the only bad thing about Naughty Dog. They make great games, I consider some of the best games ever, but they've been really bad at the bullshotting lately. Uncharted 3 for example looked significantly less graphically impressive in its retail release than its E3 trailer, I always chulked it up to the sacrifice Sony caused them to make in order to shoehorn in 3D at the last minute. The Last of Us also kinda irked me in the sense you could tell the cutscenes were pre-rendered, they were graphically a step up from the real-time gameplay. The Uncharted games didn't have that issue, while the cutscene models were indeed higher quality they did real good at making them look identical.

So, IGN is reporting that Amy Hennig has left Naughty Dog, and, much worse, was "forced out."
First, if the "forced out" part is true, this is a shitty day for video games. Hennig was a big part of several of the biggest games of the past decade and had carved out a niche as one of the most visible/respected women in the industry, which desperately needs as much support in that department as possible. She was also one of the creators of Elena, one of the better female characters in recent history, and, well, Chloe, but it's hard to argue against her performance in Uncharted 1 and 2.
Second–again if the "forced out" is true--holy carp, is this a bad look for Naughty Dog. Uncharted 2 pretty much launched Naughty Dog from one of the more recognizable studios to a top dog in the industry, and while most of that was from graphical/programming prowess, a huge chunk of it was from its creative direction. Not being able to arrive at an amicable parting of the ways, if it came to that, is terrible, and one of their first really visible mistakes they've made (I think there have been quite a few others, but mostly as matters of taste).
Finally, well...this might be a good thing for Uncharted. U3 did some things right, but the storyline is borderline incomprehensible and Hennig's unabashed declarations that parts of the game were plotted because "hey, we need a chase scene" did not sound great. If there was a legitimate difference of opinions on the direction of the game, fine and good, and I think there needed to be some. But have to handle this better.
Anyways, always hate to see anyone lose his or her job, especially when it's someone this significant.
-
I'm glad.
She helped make Uncharted 3 as lackluster as it was for creating the story to simply loosely tie set-pieces together. That's no way to write, she may be a good writer but she did wrong by that. I actually have high hopes for Uncharted 4 now that she's gone, but chances are she had already wrote most of the game by this point in time. If she was still pulling the same style of writing on 4 that she did on 3 I can't blame them for forcing her out. I don't hate her, afterall I loved UC1 and UC2, which she was behind. UC2 is one of my favorite games of all time. But she really reeaaallly went astray with 3.
I hope she finds employment at another studio soon. I think it's best for her right now to be involved in a smaller project.
-
I'm normally not one to jump on those drama igniting rumors but I do wonder if there's something to this whole forcing her out thing.
The reason? In the crazy landscape of volatile AAA development Naughty Dog always seemed surprisingly stable. A studio that seemed to work extremely well as we could see from its consistent output that also was qualitative on the high end. If it was all amicable I'd imagine there would have been an official statement from her like she was ready to move on to something new, although maybe she just isn't ready and it could still come.In any case it's going to be interesting to see where she lands, a talent like her should have quite some option open to her.
-

Yeah. That's the main reason I'm not too worried about this. With a resume like hers, she should be able to find a position in her field pretty easily.
-
Well, this sure has turned into a shitstorm. The majority of the internet (Uncharted is trending on Twitter right now too) is utterly flaming Naughty Dog and Neil and Bruce. This is truly disgusting, one of the best development studios and two of the best developers in the world being spat on for a story that hasn't even been explained yet. It is also turning into a sexism scandal and people are already forming boycotts. I'm counting the minutes before people start coming out in droves saying The Last of Us is a bad game because they know Hennig wasn't involved in its development.
Dammit internet.
-
Yeah. I'll admit I haven't really been keeping up with this since I'm not too concerned with this, but as far as I know, it hasn't been explained why she's left or was forced to leave, so it feels strange to come up with any conclusions without knowing why or having strong evidence pointing to a conclusion at least.

I think if Naughty Dog didn't want the bad press they should have made a statement immediately if it isn't what everyone is thinking. The only reason I can think of not to make a statement about this is if the story that's out right now of her being forced out is true, though we still don't know the reason, but again an immediate statement would have been good if it would calm things down.
-

The reason? In the crazy landscape of volatile AAA development Naughty Dog always seemed surprisingly stable. A studio that seemed to work extremely well as we could see from its consistent output that also was qualitative on the high end. This is the part that's probably the most disturbing to me. It just doesn't fit at all into was Naughty Dog has been for the past ten years.
I doubt we're ever going to get much detail about what happened.
-
Studio heads put a bit of a smackdown on initial reports, calling them "unprofessionally misreported." Not much further detail, and the whole thing still seems odd, but they came down pretty hard on the idea that the Druckman/Straley had anything to do with it. Entirely possible that they were actually behind it, though that seems equally unlikely. Scott Rohde has also been suggesting that it went down differently from the report, but all the things that haven't been said still make it sound like this wasn't a clean break.
I did laugh at some Polygon writers talking about how Naughty Dog should have been quicker to get ahead of the story. Guys, you were making the story. Nobody waited for clarification before running with it. I really love Polygon as a news-site, but man, some of the reviewers and a few of the journalists really like to think they're more important than they are.
-
So first Amy Hennig, then another writer involved in the series, and now the very actor who has been the "face" of UC4. The guy who narrated the trailer, we got a promotional render of in his likeness, and posted several mocap photos of himself has been fired and his role recast. This guy was (as far as we know) the main villain.
The FUCK is going on over there?!
-
It's a sign that Naughty Dog are abandoning their attempt at making a gripping story centred sequel and are finally making the Uncharted kart racing game we've all wanted.
-
Unkarted: Drake's Fortune500
-
Is that a racing series or a list of the most wealthiest characters that we don't know about in the Uncharted universe.
-
It's a racing series of the most wealthiest characters that we don't know about in the Uncharted universe.
-
More oddities. Possibly reading between the lines, but Hennig has stayed very vocal and public about her friendship with Stashwick in particular. Still seems like there's something rotten in the state of Denmark.
(Also, she's posted a few pictures of her having lunch with the main cast of Uncharted, but that's bound to happen.)
-
They seriously should just say "fuck it" and make Unkarted as a PSN title.
Or gst Ready at Dawn to do it, they're usually the the dumping zone for stuff like that.
-
Sony should make more innovative simple games for the first party stuff
I wanna see more games like Kula World and Odama (for the GCN but still).
Story based 3rd person cover shooters aren't bad at all, I actually like them a lot (loved Uncharted Drake's fortune), but I want to see some extra stuff added.
Basically, combine their first party output from the PS1 era and PS3 era. Then that will be the best first party output ever, cause it will capture what video games can be (fun games, or story based experiences).
A bit off-topic but whatever
-
I just want more quality character action games. That is a genre that is awesome but in dire need of more quality and innovation. Platinum Games seems to be the only people still doing it.
