For the record, Segovia is the reason why the guitar has a presence at all outside of flamenco

This is a tough question for me. I've worked out my favorite bassist and drummer, but I really haven't thought a lot about guitarists. I don't know who the best is, but here are some guys I like:

                [hide]Frank Zappa:

Some people say his technique is sloppy. I don't think Zappa gave a fuck, though. It's that attitude that makes him such a unique guitarist. He never took formal guitar lessons, so he's built up his own style that's open to technical guitar work, expressive sound and comedic effect. Plus, the man had passion. He could get lost in the sound of his own guitar. All of these qualities helped make him a sort of musical mad scientist.[/hide]

                [hide]Matt Pike:

This guy has another pretty unique guitar style. Being at the center of the stoner metal movement, he takes a lot of psychedelic and doom influences in his sounds and he adds an element of badass to the both of him. His guitar is soft and angry and lethargic. He can go from chugging along Motörhead-like riffs and then switch up into a psychedelic burst. There is a definite Matt Pike sound and I love it.[/hide]

There are definitely more guitarists that I love, but I can't think of them at the moment.

                        good thread

here are my personal top 3

Brian May is probably my all-time fave (March of the Black Queen has my favorite solo, though it's higher than the top 5 on this list. Brighton Rock is really good too.)

He's never on anyone's list, but Harrison played a mean guitar and wrote the very best of songs too

I don't know why so many people give Roger Waters so much credit, Gilmour is LEAGUES above him in every way

Since I'm not that well versed in the world of music I'm probably gonna get scoffed at by alot of you guys, but I really like Django Reinhardt.

                                          !

I can't actually name alot of guitarists which I like, but Django is up there.

the lack of Les Paul in this thread is disheartening.

                                            Top five:

                                            Brian May
                                            Les Paul
                                            George Harrison
                                            Chuck Berry
                                            BB King

Take your worthless degree and shove it up your ass, while using your culinary skills at your local McDonald's Jerky.

At least my degree lets me piss on your shitty arguments lol.

also if your not having the balls enough to try and live off the guitar don't even call yourself a real guitarist hahahaha

This is my opinion on who the greatest are nothing more, nothing less.

                                                            thanks chris chan

Musicians only tend to know music more because they're surrounded by it. Even then, it only means you have greater resources to search and reference.

Ah this is what I'm talking about. We've established our presences in this thread, thrown out a few people we like, given up opinions, and posted videos. The topic has been given life, but now we must be the electrical current that drives through its Frankensteinian creation of a life and bring about… active discussions. My comrades, come with me.

Now there's plenty of guitarists out there who are supposed to be really impressive if you play the guitar, but there aren't many out there who I get that vibe with, personally, as a musician. I want to get into that in a sec, but first

Since we're talking about Jack White… I haven't ever gotten a huge good vibe from that angle.

On the flipside, despite being two very different bands, I used to like The White Stripes and Rage Against the Machine at the same period in my young life. I used to think Jack White was a cooler guitarist than I do now and I used to be really into the band. It was all baseless of course and ignorant and just "assumed"... but then I recently went back and listened to these two huge bands I used to dig. And found out I just don't care about White and I never will.

But holy shit Tom Morello. I can't believe I never realized how great he was when I was a kid. Stupid ten year old dipshit me, if you're gonna be into two bands get more into Rage Against the Machine and appreciate Morello's excellent guitar. And also stop finding their political self douchey. You'll end up agreeing with half their politics one day and still be able to laugh at their antics, okay

That was around the time I started getting really into music when I was 14, or so, so Tom Morello has a special place in my heart, as does Jack White in a sense, because the latter taught me I could call stuff bad music if it disagreed with other people and the world didn't go up in flames. I spent some time trying to fuck with sound effects to make ersatz Morello work shortly after that and then discovered AMT. Ah good guitar times.

Then, everything changed when I discovered Youtube and my uncle's vinyl collection.

Hendrix, Segovia, Berry, Atkins, the Kings, Slash, Christian…

They all made me realize how goddamn boring Nirvana is. Then I learned about guys like Hiland and Hazel and I was like "wait why did I enjoy Cobain again"

I remember a time when I was a lad where I thought that Kurt Cobain was one of the greatest guitarists ever.

Kobain gets too much flak. He wasn't really an impressive guitarist and he did rip off the Pixies for a good part of his career, but he's got an attitude that shines through his music. Underneath even the most mainstream of his songs have a nice, sharp angst to them. Nirvana are overrated as hell, though, for all the wrong reasons. Now, I digress since I'm not talking about the man's guitarsmanship.

Discussion question time: What do you enjoy in a guitarist?

I find myself appreciating two things most in any given musician: creativity and emotion/attitude. This may sound like a generic thing to say, but time and time again, I find myself appreciating these qualities most in a musician. Speaking of Kurt Cobain, I enjoy him because of the attitude he conveys with his music, even if he does lack creativity. My favorite musicians, though, are ones that have both. Frank Zappa was one of the most creative minds in all of music and he had an attitude that he was always happy to convey. When I think of Zappa's unique style, I not only hear a unique sound, but a unique voice. Mattt Pike may not be on that level, but his attitude shines in his music and he knows how to manipulate it. His work really leaves an impact on me.

I think the same thing happened to me, Holy Hell. I never thought too much about Morello's guitar skills when I was younger, it was just "look at this guitar sound, it's so damn weird", but never really appreciated it. Not being a musician myself, but I think I can safely say the guy is talented. And original. And creative.

Also, I must say that, while I have a lot of favourite bass players, favourite guitarist is a different question. I'd say that, even while it may sound incredibly stupid, I'm appreciating more and more complete musicians, like Michael Akerfeldt, Daniel Gildenlow, Steven Wilson or Paul Masvidal. These guys are the songwriters, lead guitarists and singers of their respective bands, and they do it all flawlessly. Not only they are excellent songwriters and excelent singers, but they are excellent guitarists. That's something I really appreciate, specially when they play a very difficult part WHILE singing, and they do it so effortlessly, that's when you know these guys are trully talented.

So, yes; Akerfeldt, Gildenlow, Wilson and Masvidal for me.

And a special mention to the Amott Brothers, specially Michael, and to the late Dimebag Darrell. The first ones for their awesome, insultingly catchy melodies, and the second for the mindblowing riffs and solos.

1 Reply Last reply Reply Quote 0

Nirvana is the voltron of 80's American underground.

                                                                                Greg Howe
