Super Smash Bros

I really don't like Rex, Mythra or Pyra personality-wise. For Rex the same is true about his dumb design, while the Blades I can appreciate despite "lol boobs." I would much rather have literally any other playable character. I think Tora is the the best-written and acted character, and the different Poppi forms are pretty fun so that'd be my top choice. But Nia + Dromarch would also be cool (with an obvious spoilery Final Smash), or Mòrag + Brighid, or Zeke +
TurtersPandy. That's an interesting perspective. I like Tora too, but I don't think I've ever heard of him being anyone's favorite. Would you mind elaborating?

Putting this in Hide tags because it's kind of off topic.
[hide]Well first of all I played in English with English voices, which could make a difference. I usually default to the original language for anything but the localization was generally quite good so I stuck with English.
When it comes to writing, it's not that any of the other characters were really handled poorly, but Tora was just developed really well. Rex never had any potential because he's just the dopey "I love friendship and I want to save the world and protect boobs!" JRPG trope. I absolutely love Nia and Mòrag but Nia's development mostly centers around a couple plot points and Mòrag has a very defined "for Mor Ardain!" thing going. Zeke is also hilarious and honestly probably the runner-up in terms of human moments because despite the gags about being accident-prone and his theatrics, he has a really sweet underside that is shown quite nicely with the help of Pandoria.
Then there's Tora. Sure he gets his share of cheap Nopon humor, and there's the whole overplayed maid fetish thing, but he's probably the rawest and most honest cast member. I noticed he's in a disproportionately high number of cutscenes and Heart to Hearts, and I think that's a big reason. He's the one openly asking the obvious questions, whether in a "dude have you even stopped to think about it?" way or comically or sometimes even to settle an entire stupid argument with one small truth or by throwing others' words back at them. He speaks his mind, and yeah he is sometimes childish but he struggles with some serious stuff related to his place in the world and living up to others and their expectations. I came to respect him as soon as I saw his Heart to Heart in Uraya where he questions his merit in the party, knowing he isn't as good as he says and acknowledges that Poppi isn't really a Blade as well as his mistakes. He also at some point says he knows Rex isn't perfect or the strongest or anything, but it gives him that drive to better himself. Few characters are really all that introspective, at least not openly. Tora just feels handled really well.
For the acting, well I just think his VA kills it. Every single line is delivered perfectly within the context of the scene, with tons of expressiveness. I was always surprised at how easily I felt emotionally connected or moved, or you know chuckling at a dopey joke as the case may be. I know a lot of people can't stand the Nopon; I assume because of the high-pitched voices and broken English or perhaps their weird mercantile obsessions (they're basically the Ferengi sometimes lol, and just saying that makes me feel like a huge nerd). But anyway if you can see past that I think Tora steals the show. And Poppi has a quite a few moments of her own too.[/hide]
-
Tora is ok, but he is still not the best Nopon they could put in Smash.
Give. Me. Koko.
-
I mean yeah but Koko is an unfair comparison. She's too awesome.
-
ok, so I want Elma now. That song will hype me up on pretty much anything.
-
Elma would also guarantee more XCX music in the game, so yes, please.
-
I'm really trying to wait until that physical DLC release but they're making it real hard to not buy it right now.
-
Best Buy Canada has apparently leaked that Amiibos can unlock characters.
-
Kinda makes me glad I got an N2. I've bought quite a few amiibo just because they look cool, but collecting them just to unlock things is ridiculous, especially when they only work for one game. If I was buying solely based on usefulness, there's no way I would've bothered having Duck Hunt, Chibi-Robo and Mr. Resetti on my shelf.
-
Keyword is "Can". Internet is jumping to the conclusion that is "the only way".
-
I just tensed up a bit when I remembered trying to unlock Luigi in Melee.
-
You unlock Mewtwo by scanning the Amiibo for twenty hours.
-
If it's true, then I don't really see a downside to this amiibo thing, it's just another way to unlock (and a psuedo-reward for already having the amiibos). But I'll probably just unlock everyone through gameplay
I have regular Inkling and Daisy amiibos, so I probably won't invest in their Smash forms. Gotta get a K.Rool amiibo, though.
-

This. We know that there's other methods of unlocking characters and it's supposed to be more streamlined, but even then it's nice to know that if there's characters I happen to really like and want playable from the get-go, I can just use their amiibo and unlock them instantly and use them from scratch.
Also nice for me since Wolf and Ridley are characters I want to try out asap, and they both get amiibo on release.
-
Hm ok, do I unlock Dark Samus using a Samus amiibo?
-
going off past games, one method will be X amount of vs. matches, another this alleged Spirits/Story mode.
-
lol if you don't buy multiple Snake amiibos to paint in various camos.
-
Hm ok, do I unlock Dark Samus using a Samus amiibo?
Nintendo already confirmed a Daisy amiibo, which means echo fighters are also getting amiibo. So yes, there will definitely be a Dark Samus amiibo.
And then you can probably also unlock it through normal gameplay anyway
-
Hearing the unlock news my brain just decided that every character gets an amiibo, dammit! Edit: wait, for real?
Also I refuse to buy a Snake amiibo without the right ass.
-
I'm not a fan of the amiibo, but I think this is a good implementation of them. You aren't unlocking anything you couldn't otherwise access, you just get a shortcut for characters you really like. Bonus: the characters you like the most are the ones you'd most likely want amiibo for anyways, so you're left with something you will appreciate if you buy them.
-
Also it reduces the stress of tournament organizers of unlocking everything, as they can ask participants and the audience to help.
(Maybe also give out a master hand amiibo to tournament organizers would be a nice way to unlock everything for competitive)

new track - Yoshi's New Island arranged by Shota Kageyama (he did a lot of Pokemon music)

I don't have a switch so this game hasn't been on my radar. But I just looked at the roster and it looks pretty sweet.
I'm assuming this game will play more like Brawl/Smash 4 though, as opposed to melee.
-
Smash 4 doesn't plays quite like Brawl either.

All I saw was 'Direct starts in 30 minutes' and I had 15 heart attacks, 7 strokes, and one major aneurism.
That said, I'd love to have Transistor on my Switch.
-
Yah, those non smash direct, BEGONE! You don't belong in this thread!
-
Smash 4 doesn't plays quite like Brawl either.
It's similar enough. That floaty/defensive type of play
-
Everyone that has played it called slower than melee, faster than For. All characters complete their jumping animation at the same speed, and its fast. Gameplay video seems fast even with the weird type of knockback that makes you fly out faster but you stop midair when you recover control instead of keeping momentum and needing to cancel it.
I reserve any further analysis or judgment of the game's feel until I actually play it. I'd recommend the same for everyone as well.
BTW with Peach we are at 35 characters showcased out of the 69 videos currently in the site, with 67 characters, minus 4 by Pokemon trainer and Wii fighters conditions, plus the 6 current echoes.
34 to go, divided strangely into 4 from 64, 8 from melee, 10 for brawl and 12 for For.

Smash 4's gameplay is less enjoyable than Brawl's because it got rid of tripping

@Purple:
Smash 4's gameplay is less enjoyable than Brawl's because it got rid of tripping
Smash Ultimate can sense if it's being played at a tournament and will enable tripping solely for that.
-
Glad Mewtwo is back. Lucario as ersatz never did it for me.
-
This has been going around Smashboards
!

I would have at least entertained the idea but that Agnes model looks really off. Something in uncanny valley
-
Looks obviously fake to me. Is there at least "evidence/proof" alongside it, or is it just another low-res close-up image and nothing else?
EDIT: Also wouldn't Tiz or Edea be the Bravely rep since they're playable in both games?
-
Any time there's a hyper-cropped image at a weird angle it's automatically fake. But since it's fun to pick apart and demolish… aren't all the icons representing a character's series universal (i.e. not language-dependent)? I find it hard to believe they'd just write "RH" for Rhythm Heaven since that's not even the Japanese name.
-
I liked the idea of the girl being Akumi Tachibana more. She's like Takamaru, obscure but a neat nod nonetheless.
-
Both Isaac and Agnes look really flat.
But hey I'm totally down for Rhythm Heaven.

What about peppy/slippy echoes? If people are eating up Chrome, I'd like my star fox team scramble.

What about peppy/slippy echoes? If people are eating up Chrome, I'd like my star fox team scramble.
Heaven knows I love Slippy more than most, but he has no business darting around like Fox or Falco.
-
It seems like it will work as it should (one battle each stock is a character), and not as what we were given to understand (3/5 to idunno individual battles)
-
This functionality was obvious and clear to me since the direct…? How were people confused lol.
-
It was obvious, but every time they talked about it it seemed to indicate a new battle, like this time that they said "you can continue the gauntlet with the winner, or do the 5 battles and see who ends on top" or something like that.
-
Yea, I actually had the same confusion. I was split on whether it was each character having stocks within the same battle, or more of a crew battle set-up where once a character loses, then it would be menus again, stage pick, and back to the fight with the next character
-
So… it's Team Battle Mode, a la Tekken style.
-
The closest I remember playing something like this was making teams when my brother and I played Soul Calibur II. Was a lot of fun.
-
I doubt we can get a "swap character" dedicated button in smash, so it's an elimination battle, not a tag battle.
Then again we have the inklings "shield down" to recharge ink.
