The main takeaway is "Cappy can be in smash?", and from that I jumped to the other games that could be implemented into smash of the newer versions of old characters.

It's like on the Jump aniversary games, the Good Ones had a wide variety of Luffys Gokus and Narutos, with a standar base move set and keept the wild changes to their supers and taunts, so it was "Alabasta Luffy" with just gomu gomu storm and Canon, while Skypea Luffy had the golden ball thingie for the "fireworks" and the riffle modes, and so forth, with the final forms (Gear 2, Vegetto and Kyubi mode) as the only separate characters.
I don't see that working on smash that much tho, because just as in JUS it only applied to very long running series.

So let's assume this is a new game (probably is) instead of a Street Fighter like remaster (Also very likely)
What new characters are they going to add? And I mean serious contenders, not those pie in the sky bullshit things like Goku.
They sorted added everything people wanted last time, Ryu, Cloud, Bayonetta, Mega Man, Sonic.
Does Snake come back? Ice Climbers? What could other major third party characters make it? I don't know if Tendo likes to play nice with the West, or would think Master Chief or Tracer might make it in. I could see Blizzard getting into bed with Smash.
Other than that? The bases seem to be covered.

I'm at a point that I don't care about new characters, but I'd like Ness, Megaman and Little Mac to return.
A break the targets or board the platforms, 64th style. Improved history mode, Brawl style. Smash Run.
Realistically: Magicant and kill smash tour, and I'm game.

As far as third parties go, aside from the veterans (including Snake), I'd love to see Doomguy or Travis Touchdown make it in, as unlikely as that may be.
Shovel Knight or Rayman would be great as well, and some of the third party announcements from this Direct could be interesting.

I came home from work to this news.
Holy crap. Even if it's just an updated port of Smash 4, I would be happy. But the way it was revealed, BotW Link's inclusion, no subtitle, and the lack of confirmation that it's a port has me wondering. If it was just an updated port, it would be weird for them to not come out and say that, since they'd be setting people up for disappointment for when they eventually confirm its port status. At the same time, 2018 seems shockingly soon for a whole new game. Hmmm…..
Maybe it's a "new" Smash that pulls a lot from Smash 4 so it doesn't take as long to come out, while still adding enough new stuff to consider it "Smash 5"?

When Smash 3DU development ended and Sakurai announced the next project was decided it was always going to be Smash and I am so glad! I thought because of the Wii U tanking the way it did they'd try to have something ready for the Switch's launch but this is better.

If it's a new game, my wish is that one of the first news is whether every characters will be back or not.
Leaving the old characters status secret is the worst part of the wait.
Honestly, I can't see a reason why characters would be cut this time. No hardware excuse anymore.Anyway, if my wish is fulfilled, my most wanted new characters would be : Rex (/w Pyra, Mythra and N), KOS-MOS and Isaac (will never happen but I can dream).
Besides that, I expect Wolf and Ice Climbers to return and 1 or 2 characters from ARMS (didn't play the game so I have no preference).
Pokemon could get a representative of the next gen if it's indeed released this year. If it's not, I expect Decidueye to join. -

Well there will be some characters cut because the roster is really fucking big, but that said there are some easy cuts you can make right off the top - Roy, Dark Pit, Mii Fighters. I assume Cloud won't be back. If Bandai Namcos not involved then probably no Pac-Man.
Ice Climbers are a lock to return for sure. Rex - Xenoblade is easily worthy of two roster spots - and an ARMS character are obvious additions. Dillon could get bumped up to a roster spot. Another retro character - Balloon Fighter maybe? - of course. Captain Toad probably. And maybe, just maybe King K. Rool? A man can dream. And after Smash 4s snub I've given up on any Golden Sun representation in the roster.
The more I think about it the more I'm convinced this is a new Smash and not a port…but likely built heavily upon the Smash 4 engine. I just hope we get some meatier single player.
Goddamnit, I'm starting to hype myself lol.

I'm kind of happy because evidence is beginning to point toward this being a new Smash Bros instead of a port. In which case it is a bit of megaton announcement. If it had just been a port, it would have been "meh", another port I won't buy.
I just hope they don't trim the character roster too much. The "clones" like Lucina and Dark Pit don't need to be removed entirely, they can be put in as alternate costumes. I'm a bit biased, as I really wanted Lucina. I don't want her to be removed, and I don't see why she has to be when there is an alternate costume mechanism already in place.

Sort of a pipe dream, but Nintendo's been a good platform for indie gaming, with one of the cleanest marketplaces, and a fair share of notable titles. A lot of the more popular titles are even celebrations of Nintendo nostalgia, with Shovel Knight taking from the classic Megaman games and Undertale being inspired by Earthbound (Toby Fox even started his game making career with an Earthbound ROM hack). At the very least some trophies would be cool, but even getting an assist trophy or two would be amazing.
Yacht Club in particular has been collaborative with other people, lending Shovel Knight to a lot of other games, including Smash-inspired indie titles. He even has an amiibo already, which is pretty notable as the only character (until Solaire drops) that isn't Nintendo-owned or a Smash character. I think Shovel Knight would be a pretty logical inclusion in some form.

I think that Shovel Knight and Shantae are the top contenders for Indie reps in Smash (both getting in would be ideal) but Shantae would probably have the edge though as she has history on Nintendo platforms

Also, as I'm a filthy hypocrite that falls for the hype every time, I've seeing the Sm4sh character reveals, and it always has said:
Original game: Nintendo/HAL, and the characters part is the one that keeps growing with each reveal, so it saying that in the 5mash trailer doesn't mean that BandaiNamco or somebody else isn't helping them.

Since the last one, I've been wanting a Dragon Quest main to hit Smash. It feels weird that it hasn't happened, yet. As much as I love Ness, I'd say it's surprising he was the first RPG representative. It's even stranger that Cloud got in before, really. Dragon Quest is super popular in Japan, defined the RPG as a genre, continues to pump out games to this day and - aside from one game that went to the PS2 instead, and then recently was ported to the 3DS anyways - every game in the series has been released on a Nintendo console. DQ8 is the most iconic one in modern history, and the port came out between Sm4sh and this one, so I'd love to see the Hero from that show up.
