Perhaps he just sewed the first one on himself after he was done modifying his body, and whenever he gets sick of it he rips it off and sews a new one together.

Yeah, go the Sea Panties!!! I had actually figured that the shirt was made of special fabric - rather like Luffy's - with the ability to stretch and repair itself with no visible stitches after fights.
