What, so just because they have less clothing on, they cost more? Ugh… now even fanservice is costly...

I think nowadays, its not about production cost anymore.
Its all about how much profit they can make.
They like less clothing thingy cos its cheap in production, but they are in high demands.

I remembered back then where no pvc got removeable clothes, until megahouse released KOYORI.
Her price went triple in the first week and sold out everywhere…....and since then, pvc is never be the same.
Most company will want to make their figures got removeable clothes.

Although I've noticed, female figures with more revealing clothing (well, I dunno how else to put it without sounding akward) always tend to cost more. Any reason for that?

Yes I also still live with my family, and my mum wouldn't like it either, I intend to display it beside my PC where she's unlikely to see it lol

And yes, they know perverts will pay more for sexy figures so they jack up the price lol, but 6000 yen isn't too bad for a 1/6 resin, I just got her today too, so I'll put up some pics shortly, she has a little chain I need to figure out how to get around her.

More plastic + more parts= higher cost of production. More molds need to be made, more people need to put them together on an assembly line, more plastic is used. Even if that plastic is hella cheap, it still costs more if you use more. Also the kind of paint applied and how it is applied. Even the box size… if you need more plastic, little twisty ties, even more cardboard (even the printing on the box comes into the picture; larger box=more ink). It's the same with any kind of item, even books, for example. Glossy cover? More money. Embossing? Even more. Some companies will eat part of that cost if they think they can sell a higher volume, though. Also, they will use fancier/more costly stuff on the things they think will sell. This kind of thing (pricing & cost margin) isn't arbitrary, it's well thought out and meticulous. No company wants to lose money, they want to hoard it and roll around in it like Scrooge McDuck.
That's probably why characters like Sanji, Nami, Chopper SA (smaller boxes and less parts, even less paint/colors) will cost less than Zoro, Luffy. Resale prices are more about the character, though (of course).

I have no idea about the series/character, but she's so pretty I'm tempted to get her… but I don't want to fall into that pit. The pit where you just buy whatever figure you think it pretty. It's dangerous, and I know it's hard to crawl out of that once you're in it.

That's Yuzuriha Inori, the female protagonist of the show and- despite the fact that people tend to hate her for retarded reasons- one of my favourite characters. Undoubtedly a must-buy for me.

Just to clear the production cost up, I went and pulled up Bandai's balance sheet. Unfortunately, it's from year 2001, but the production cost percentage shouldn't be too different from now. I couldn't find a current one in English from google.

Production costs really have very little to do with pricing. According to the balance sheets, they spend on average about 9% on the production costs of toys at Bandai. So, a $100 figure would average $9 to make according to this including fees and rights.

( If you take production costs in category 1 under Toys and amusement and divide it by Net Sales in category 3 under Toys and amusement, you get about a 9% figure) ( 8,677 mil yen/93490 mil yen= 0.093) Of course, note that this is not only outdated, but it is clumped in with amusement. ( what ever that may be)

They basically can price a figure on size, demand or basically anything they want.

As for Guilty crown, that figure is a very good representation of her. The sculpt is nice too, but I lost interest in the show early on about 4 episodes in. It felt a little like Code Geass.

Ehh, I think amusement = any prizes in amusement game centers. Prize figures, plush, etc. I do think that pricing must be very complicated… lots of little factors and bottom lines. I brought up publishing before because my friend is in book publishing so I've gotten an earful and a half about the whole pricing and process LOL, right down to ink and colors (every penny counts, i guess). I'd love to see the spreadsheet for cost/profit for one figure specifically. Like a FAZ vs a POP or something. That would be some interesting stuff!
I really do think that FAZ made a mistake making a FAZ (shirahoshi) around the same price as a POP ahaha.
I'd also love to see the production & sales sheets between companies. It would be really interesting to find out how much Alter spends! ^_^ Thanks so much for the info, snow, very interesting, but about what I expected. It's such a broad sales form, but it really does show that they're raking in the profit, ne?

Well, looking at that production sheet, we do have to keep in mind that they have to price toys and such at a higher rate compared to their media, as their media costs a lot more to produce. The figures are basically pulling extra weight. And if you look at their income statement, the company as a whole only made a 7% profit on their net sales that year, and cost of goods sold was about 63% of their net sales. So while they may be making more on every figure sold, as a company, they're making an average of 7 yen per every 100 yen sold. But it's not like they can drop their media to make cheaper figures, since one of the reasons it's cheaper for them to produce figures is because they already own the rights to do it for many shows (i.e. Gundam). So in a roundabout way you have production costs of media making a difference on figure prices.

And they really do have to take production costs into account. After all, no matter what the price, there's always quantity at which the suppliers will no longer make a profit and start to lose money. Some companies can afford to lose money on one product if it leads to making money on several others.

Including cost, how popular the line is, marketing, boxes, sculpture, royalty, etc.
I'm sure they will need a certain % of profit so they can pay their employee, shipping, marketing, etc.

And yeah, what kind of material, what kind of paint, how complex are the paint, how long does it takes to build them, how big the figure is.
The bigger they are, the bigger container it will cost them to ship 5000pcs.

Not to mention dead stock.

And to make all that worth the time and effort, they need big margins.
For that, everything counts.

that's why everything made in china now. Cos they do care about production cost.
If not, everything will be made in japan or Gemany.

np. lol, I didn't take the time to flip through the report for the definitions, but you are right about the amusement. (ie vending machines, prizes, apparel, even game software and others too)
It would be interesting to to see pricing sheets and production costs comparisons, but I would rather doubt that that would be public information though.

I do agree with what you said. I was rather surprised with how much their figure and amusement sales were pulling so much weight.

I think it will be around 30-40cm height and wide. I saw somebody's holding it, and it was huge.
They already prepainted him. And 3A toys is really famous for their paint job. It will looks fantastic.

Yyyep I stepped into this recently. Actually it all started with Black Rock Shooter, but that was okay cause she was originally just from pretty artwork anyway (and the designs are too awesome). I just bought Melty from Shining Hearts when I have no intention of playing the game… I expected huge regret but despite my nitpicks I'm happy with her at the moment. And I'm definitely gonna try and get Inori, even though I don't care to go watch the anime. Momohime is also quite pretty and getting a re-release... dun dun dun. You just have to keep it to a minimum, with effort. :x

OH NOOOO!! I got a BRS figures, too XD. I couldn't resist, it was so nice! And I got momohime, but I own the game (and i will play it soon) so I figured it was OK because I am obsessed with vanillaware games. I must… not tread too far off my beaten path!! Yea i wish i could get one as well, but the price far out of my range, not to mention the space issue my room has as well. Looks awesome though, being a huge metal gear fan id love to get it (though at that price it should come with the nuke too )

yeah, because your post was the one that turned my hesitation into decision, so that's why I still remember it. The delay was just for Mandarake cancellation policy, but at last I got payment request.

The Hanma will be released in April, so if you are there at the release, I think you'll manage to get him. The Baki fan-merchandise is all quite limited, but the fangroup is much, much smaller as that of say, One Piece, Berserk or DBZ even.

So be a bit early and you should be able to manage it.

Yeah the animated series have really cool songs and quite a good representation. However the manga is truly fantastic!

Amiami wants money as soon as they can ship you the goods…. at least it used to.

The main Crows x Worst figures are Flash Back Generation, aka FBG, all of them retail for 3,800Y with tax, unless it's a very special/rare release. Usually one character is released/up for preorder each month.
There's no scale, but they average about 22cm, and they come with a base/stand but they need them, they don't have the little pegs holes on their feet like other figures.
Each character usually get four or five versions, which is usually a repaint, sometimes they change the pose a bit or remove the sunglasses or make a comic face.
FBG have sub-lines like how POP have sub-lines like DX, NEO, Strong Edition, and Sailing Agian. But their sub-lines are based on groups and arcs.
They come in huge clam shell packaging, so people can display them without opening them. Maybe that's why they're sold for less than retail long after their releases.

The other Crows x Worst figure I know of is just the trading figures and some 1/6 scale limited edition stuff.

Blacksmith should know more about the quality, he's probbaly got the biggest collection here.

ahaha it's very true. I'm on IRC a lot and we've been talking about manga lately, that's bad enough! Now I've read all of hunter, have bought all of FMA manga (to read), and have read all of Bakuman. @_@
Visiting Sensui's place was simultaneously the best & worst. XD I had to make a checklist of my most wanted… it's not often you get to see so much stuff in person! I finally got those Death Note Griffon figures, Medicos Goku, IK card holders. Now all I need is IK Oars & Luffy and my list will be complete.

And now I'M curious and feel I must read Worst! The list is getting longer, Ippo, Worst, Slam Dunk…
