The "coupling" arc (or wathever you guys call it) was definitely the highlight of the manga. Everything both before AND after that has been pretty lackluster. Not bad, but generic and pretty bland. Nothing special.
That arc, while still not a MASTERPIECE, was entertaining, the fights were very original, the powers interesting and the backstory for the main character was quite shocking and engaging. His half-psycho brother was also a breath of fresh air.
Then, came this Raven McBland into the mix, those incredibly lame bunnies and the romance angle got quite out of hand ("I'm the ONLY ONE who can make her smile! You hear me??". . .what the fuck, man? where on the 21st fucking century, you retrograde imbecile. . .), and overall, not very interesting.
Chapter 61 could mark a change for the better, since it felt different and quite epic. You can see the author went the extra mile with that ending page. But if he will resolve it in 6-7 chapters, then I don't know if it's worth the "hype". We'll wait and see. . .
Edit: and while we're at it, chapter 62 is out.
! Oh, hello sage guy who we haven't seen since, what, chapter 4? 5? And you've mastered an incredibly powerful magic!
! And. . .look, Sephirot (have we seen this guy before in the manga in person??)! And the 12 most powerful mages in the world! Well, that's kinda rushed, but, we'll have fun here!! What awesome powers we'll see from these magic mammoths of. . .(1 page later) Oh, all defeated off-pannel.
Raven's math magic was sweet as fuck though. I love the author's outrageous abilities so much, and his is certainly no exception.
