! My last word on this, not because I'm annoyed at the argument, but because I don't want to sidetrack the thread:
! Your first part nailed it. I think putting the flashbacks first would have done three times the good by a.)further fleshing out Ace so there was more empathy for him during this storyline, b.)giving Luffy's nigh-insanity during Marineford even more foundation, and c.)further emphasizing to the audience that there was no way that Ace was going to die. Coming when as as it did, I just felt like it was treading water and hitting themes that had already been largely exhausted in Marineford.
! Good chat.
491: ''Landing on the Isle of Women - The Cruel Reality Tortures Luffy''

Wha… WHAAAAAAA
Toei actually deigning to give a shit and cranking out a halfway decent episode!?
Did I step into a bizarro universe before I clicked play?
-
I hope they won't make the Flashback last too long. TBH, it was not the most interesting of all. I think Nami and Robin's pasts were the most heartbreaking.
-
@mdmartin101:
OK, I know have it dead set in my mind that Toei cannot draw Luffy crying at all. Ever.
So you're basically saying Oda can't either, since he looked exactly the same in the manga.
Sure, we can pretend it's not and blame the anime, why not?! Easier and cooler.
I hope they won't make the Flashback last too long. TBH, it was not the most interesting of all.
"not the most interesting" is an understatement.
-
so no new opening it seems? Bloody weak.
Why would there be a new opening with this episode?
That date was set before the earthquake/tsunami delayed the episode by a week. The new opening will come whenever the next real episode of One Piece is.
-
! But if we take your argument for truth, can we at least agree that Oda should have put the flashback in the storyline before was killed?
No, because of two reasons.Flashbacks usually happens when a character is at the lowest mentally and/or physically.
Think about it;
-Zoro had his Flashback when he stairing down a firing squad
-Sanji was getting berated by Zeff while being pounded by Pearl
-Nami had just gotten screwed over by the Arlong and the Marines causing her home village she spent 10 years trying to save decided to say fuck it and try to go down fighting
-Robin was in the hands of CP9, while Spandam was shooting his mouth off about how awesome a Buster Call was.
-Franky had just gotten his ass handed to him by CP9
-Brook's happened during the post fight party but by then he had spent 50 years alone on a ship with the remains of his crew.Number two they provide a look into the pathos of the character, they help explain why the way they are and why they just do what they did.
! One of the reasons why Luffy has a second flash back is to show why exactly its so god damn painful for him to lose Ace. When Sabo was in trouble he didn't do a damn thing and he ended up dead(?). Yeah he was seven years old but that's not going to stop him from feeling like its his fault. This time he gave everything he had and then some to save Ace, but he still failed to save him. Also the audience's perspective this is a twist of the knife, We were already bummed out that ace was dead, but we didn't know that this was not only the second time this has happened to Luffy. Luffy had sworn that he would never let something like that happen again.
-
Toei really did a good job. The final moments with Luffy crying was sort of bad. There are times when they should change how they draw, and not just what the Manga shows.
The anime is around 5 months behind the manga, so I wish they would start covering 2 chapters an episode. But they did a good job, I thought the pacing would be awful this week, but they wrote some good filler.
Also, Law has one of the coolest looking crews!
-
I'm not saying Oda's perfect with crying panels either, I'm still peeved about Coby. But it's one panel. With the anime, it's several seconds, of lose animation, that looks like Luffy's face is melting.

Would everybody be OK with it if we just replace "draw" with "animate"?
And honestly, those panels still make me cringe.
-
Well, at least they're not generic bishounen crying faces.
Although, I do believe Oda went a bit too far. I know people, when extremely depressed, look ugly when they cry, but that's just…...yikes. -
-
Alright got me there.
-
Bleach just wasn't enough for him.
-
Urahara got tired of the bullshit.

Bleach just wasn't enough for him.
And the few remaining decent characters from Bleach have started defecting to superior mangas. I hear Kenpachi has a nice guest arc coming up in Yotsubato.
-
You know he totally left just for the chance to get some ass on Amazon Lily.
-
You know usually I'd do a quick review on this episode and such but I'm so damn tired.
Fuck it. -
! I have checked that Naruto part 2 anime started barely a week after the end of part 1.
! However, we have to note that there were 3 seasons of shitload fillers. I wonder how Toei is gonna handle this for One Piece. -
Probably just giving a week or two break. Or that non-canon Detective/feudal era stuff that wasn't so bad.
-
Well, next week's the crossover. Art still reminds me of Movie 10. I think it's because Luffy's hair has highlights just like it did in the movie. Oh, and the setting looks similar to Merveille too.
I hope Toei will stick to this art until the series ends.
-
Well, it doesn't hurt to dream, does it?
-
I hope Toei will stick to this art until the series ends.
Just as long as they don't use the dumb as hell costumes in that movie, except for the awesome suits they all wear at the end
Oda may have designed them, but honestly they look crap -

If it's a non-canon other dimension stuff, then Oda has created many other stuff for the Omake… Knowing Toei,if they really animate the Omake, they'll probably milk the 3 pages plot to a 3 episode filler... and I don't mind that!
-
And so, Bepo continues with his quest to find female bears!
Good episode. Probably wont watch next week's crossover.
-

-
Wait, so one piece 492 is the crossover? Or are they seperate?
-
I guess opinions differ on this episode. I hated the animation in this episode; hell, ever since the Marineford arc started I have felt as if every episode has more still panning shots than actual animated frames.
However, I loved the part where Luffy bailed from the sub and the heartfelt scream of 'Where's Ace?!!'. By far the best part of the episode, although his rampaging being expanded upon compared to the manga was nice too if one ignores the cruddy animation.
The crying scenes looked shit. However, the original manga has - in my opinion - awesome crying faces. I can't understand why people are dissing those and say those are crap: they are by far the most heart-rending crying expressions I've seen in any manga. It is just that Toei's method of drawing and/or colouring them fails at some point where it just looks fugly and jerking as hell. :(

they should go back to animating extended the cover story arc like they did during the East Blue Saga with Buggy and Coby's cover story, at least it's canon materials and allow anime-only people to know what happen to some past characters like Enel or CP9
-
I have a question, does the Toriko special count as Episode 492? Or is it out of the episode order? That way I can know if Funimation intends to simulcast it or not.
O-chan
-
An average episode, nothing special.
Next week's going to be interesting! -

Gotta be the biggest bullshit I've read to date.
-
If that's the biggest bullshit you've read to date, consider your life blessed.
Honestly, I agree with him on the crying. I loved the crying panels in the manga.
I bet Tanaka's getting a bit weary of screaming eeeeeeeesssuuuuuuuwuh
-
It looks ridiculous on both counts. The face was way too exaggerated and cartoony to fit that scene. Yeah, I know, it's One Piece. But the series has had many crying scenes that were fine.
This not so much.
So, yeah, it was already ridiculous. But I guess if you add motion and more exposure (cause in the manga it was just a lil' panel) it does look even more stupid.

Yeah, I rarely read bullshit. But to be honest, I think both versions are just as ugly. While I do agree adding motion to already ugly faces is worse, I just thought both versions of the crying were just as horrendous.
Edit: And while I didn't find the animation or the art super mega awesome, there wasn't anything wrong with it to be like "OMG THAT SO BAD! MUST RANT!". The episode served it purpose for what it was worth and didn't need super awesome animation or art.
-
Hah, silly marines, think the pirates will shut their mouth for a while, hah!
Now they're screwed… oh, remember the previous episode? Party-time! Just not for tha marines and civilians... for the pirates...Brownbeard looks... pretty good.
! Too bad…
-
Huh, so now he shows up.
What ?
HOORAY
Well, no new opening yet for this episode.
Too bad :PAnd this is made much more silly by the fact that the battle is over and Ace and Whitebeard are already dead.
-

That's a cool opinion, but I think it looks fine in both of them. But still better in the manga. You get to see him reverting to the mind of a child in the crying expressions, so yeah, it totally fits for me. It's exactly how I'd imagine a 5 year old crying, whimpering.
The only crying expression I've ever had a problem with was Usopp's at the end of Enies Lobby when Luffy takes him back when getting fired on by Garp. That… uh... that just took away from the scene for me. (but I don't want to derail this thread)
-
The episode was pretty good and seeing Brownbeard was a pleseant surprise. His seiyuu is Yasuhiko Tokuyama who was also Yosaku's voice if anyone is interested.
-
I don't know I've recently taken to watching the old episodes again and you know I'll take panoramic views and stills over countless recycles of the same animations or mirror imaging.
That said I have to agree the crying scenes seem to detract more then they added - I mean the empty eye look in the submarine had almost a gut wrenching fear to it but then the crying as much emotion was in the voice it didn't move me like Merry or Robin crying Save me did.
-
I enjoyed this episode, I found the filler added to the scenes we saw in the manga. Sure the crying faces were a little silly, but seeing Luffy all upset really moved me.
Good episode overall
-
Hahaha, I wish that they start covering 2 or even better 3 chapters per ep… hopefully :)
-
^ Yeaaaaaah. About that…...
-
I'd prefer if the new opening premiered with the first episode of Toriko. It'd just give us another "new" thing to look forward to. I still need to see the last episode of Kai today to…..
-
Have only skmmed through this ep, but stil somehow I imagned Toei would expand on the first part of the episode, but instead they expanded on the Amazon Lilly stuff.
Also Brownbeard's name sounded weird. Wasn't it "Chi hige" or something along those lines ?
-
If the Crossover replaces Kai, next week will we have episode 492?
-
The crossover replaces One Piece. Kai is over, and episode 98 is remaining unaired. We should have 492 on April 10.

So glad I wasn't the only one who thought that X'D
god, I would say I loved this epi but damn I love all the episodes cept the fillers… and the Davy Back Fights (which someone told me were filler... shocked to hear they weren't)
was I the only one who didn't cry? A friend of mine did.
Almost cried laughing, though...
[/arrow barrage] ; A ;the scene when they were entering Amazon Lily made me lol X'D
'If you don't get inside, you'll die. [/moves head out of the way of an arrow]'
I did lol. Promptly.the Heart Pirates… most epic crew EVER.
All of the Heart Pirates.
ALL OF THEM.
Made me lol.
Except Jambarl. He just stood there like 'hunnfffhhhhhh' trying to be the next king bishy of muscles... he's drawing with Urouge.as for possible fillers?
I don't really mind the feudal era fillers.
I wanna see more Supernovae [/derpface] -

Wtf animation was that during the final minuet or so
