First, Oda's interviews are mostly for the lulz, like most of us know. The style of writing is also very childish so I wouldn't give it much credibility. It's probably all in good fun. Anyway, even if it wasn't I think someone like Oda, who works his ass of for everyone and has in fact made the single most popular manga in history has the right to a title. It is much like someone starting at the lowest rank in a company. As they work their way up, their rank and the respect for their jobs increase. So for me it is a matter of earned respect that a title represents that Oda is implying, something to work toward. Something that all mangaka aspire too and will prevent them from doing a half-assed job because of the recognition they would get.

Exactly, however there is a difference, in Books, authors are caled author of this and that, but an author who perhaps created a best seller such as one peice for example, then would be from now on called "Best seller author or author of the best seller" which kinda takes it beyond the simply " author" name.

Well they obviously seem to be joking around but still Oda really deserves recognition. even thought I really don't like the more childish elements in One Piece the series is still brilliant, incredibl well thoguht out, unpredictable, exciting and you can really feels how the story is progressing towards something. Hundreds of chapters and I am still on the edge on my seat
Now when you compare it with something like Bleach which is of course but complete crap as far talent,chracters,creativity and so on are concerned…yeah Oda definetely desrve praise

It doesn't add up. If Oda, even in jest, talks about giving mangaka's "ranks" like officials in authority would have, why would he commit his life to writing a manga that portrays ranking hierarchy as unfair and unjust. Why would he make the Strawhat crew, which doesn't recognize ranks, as they are, instead of having Luffy ordering everyone around because he's "Captain". I don't see Oda as a person who would openly criticize the work ethic of other mangaka.
However, if he was talking about an ultimate goal for mangakas to reach, I'm sure all mangakas would agree. The interview, however, portrayed him as conceited snob who believes everyone should approach manga like he does. I would call into question the article rather than Oda.

No it's not, when you've made more money than God in your respective position and economy and are considered the same shit as the lazy workers with the same title next to you, you require a push and a title that separates you from the crowd.
When you actually succeed at something in life and are considered the best by your peers, but have no way to reach a higher position than them, you'll either search for another job or live miserably.

lol - ok I really can't deny that. Regardless, in general, the art really isn't drastically different (I think it is actually remarkably NOT different considering OP is almost like a decade and a half old.) Sure though, that page was without a doubt iffy.
