My favorite tale would be an all time classic. The tale of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, especially Enkidu is a pretty tragic character. And Gilgamesh got screwed over big time, only a few inches separated him from immortality and within a moment it's all gone.

I don't have a particular favourite, but I like the stories from Ovid's Metamorphoses. They're not very epic or badass, but very beautiful stories. Like Narcissus, the boy who falls in love with his own reflection. Or Orpheus, who goes to recollect his wife in the Underworld, and is permitted to do so on the condition of not looking back until they are outside - he fails at the last moment. And of course the story of Daedalus and Icarus, who flew towards the sun. Etcetera etcetera. In high school we got Latin so I had to translate a lot of these stories, it was one of my favourite things to do in school.
I also love the Greek Underworld as a whole, with the ferryman and the three-headed dog, and the different rivers…

At that point it's not mythology, but fan fiction. Mythologies are well-established stories. Sure, many mythologies have had addendums over the years, but those are at least far back enough that most people recognize it as part of the source material. Even then, that's mostly for pagan mythologies, since a lot of them are determined from loose compilations of ancient poetry, so it's hard to determine where it begins and ends. Jewish mythology has specific cut-off dates for mythology. The Channukah story is not even recognized as a legitimate part of Judaism because of that. It's only celebrated to compete with Christmas. Christianity isn't as strict, but we have a case study for the results of adding onto its existing mythology. Do you find any legitimacy in Mormonism? Islam's an unknown quantity to me, but I assume you would be considered just as crazy for claiming to have the next chapter of the Koran.

man, Norse mythology is pretty fucking intense.
If you die a glorious death, you get to go to Valhalla, where you just drink and fight and sex all day, and then at the end of days you get to fight in Ragnarok, the mother of all battles. Shit doesn't get any more intense than that.
Also, Thor rides around in a cart pulled by two goats, and he can kill and eat them, but as long as he doesn't break any bones, he can just bring them back to life again. INTENSE.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, but it is in fact exactly that… pretty much. The whole point of Latin literature was to take a work that already existed and try to make a better version.
As for the stories, there's a difference between a "folk epic" and a "culture epic" (don't know if the naming is the same in English). A folk epic is a tale people tell, it's anonymous and it goes around, they're not written down. See my explanation for legend. This is what the stories of the Trojan war and the stories aboud Odysseus are.
A culture epic is a literary creation by one author. He takes these known legends and writes them up in a nice way. That's what the Odyssey, the Iliad, and the Aeneid are.Edit: Same goes for Beowulf, the work we know is the work of some bloke who decided to write the whole thing down. The original text dates from around 750, the literary Old-English version from around 1000.

Yeah greek mythology really has some interesting ways of getting the point across, Athena being born from her dad's head, already clad in armor was supposed to tell you she'd be uber-smart and a hardcore warrior.
And with Aphrodite…well, you immediately know what's up with this character the second you read how she was born.I also like the explanation for the change of seasons they offered, with Persephone being forced to the under world, causing winter, and with her being reunited with her mother, bringing summer.
A simple, restricted concept. But kinda touching, since it's explained with a mother's grief.You know, let's not forget Egyptian mythology, even though there are far less sources left. For example, I always enjoyed reading through the Osiris cycle, a guy who's killed and dismembered but becomes a god in the process. That's badass. :ninja:
Also digging Egyptian mythology here. The one thing in mythology that managed to scare me shitless is to be found in it. Ammit. This fucker scares me to death. Just look at her. The two famous love stories coming to my mind are Aeneas/Dido and Paris/Helen.
The first ends with the most heartwrenching scene in the whole of the Iliad. The second ends in a war. Seriously though, how dumb can you be, kidnapping the queen of Sparta. Oh wait, this one's caused by Aphrodite again, lolAlso I'm highly disturbed by the lack of Krishna-love. That guy literally invented wet T-shirt contests (without shirts) while tricking some girls on the riverside and married 16.108 princesses simultaneously after rescuing them from a demon. Even Zeus has problems messing with this record. Damn, Krishna. I heard from a reliable source that the word "Kamasutra" translates to "Krishna: the Walkthrough".
