How the hell is one of the highest selling titles around thats incredibly easy to make on the chopping block?
I know between them and Rockband they flooded the market with like 80 titles in two years (and still only managed to have a dozen songs I like between them) but you'd think it's an easy no brainer franchise to keep going.
Hurry up and give me a full blown Queen game and I'll consider buying one of your stupid guitars.
Rock Band has been the better music-game anyway.
But yeah, I can't say I'm totally surprised. The last GH game was received lukewarm at best plus you've got the whole industry in a ridiculous bloat of peripherals (Guitars, Turntables, Skateboards, Wacky waggle wands, wacky waggle wands with a cherry on top, boats) consumers are starting to realize they just don't have the space to accommodate all that plastic crap.
It also doesn't help that its one of the four franchises that they milked the hell out of, practically oversaturating the genre.
Thank god. .
Hopefully that means the songs I really liked, but were locked to the Guitar Hero franchise can fnalyl be ported to the RockBand network ^_^

As terrible as some of that stuff is I don't know why they'd waste money musch less space on some of it. Plus the consumers wouldn't need to buy that stuff since it's backwards and forwards compatible though given the intelligence of your average consumer they probably wouldn't wise up to that until after the fact. One thing I find strange though is how Activision decided to bury the GH franchise after one uneventual entry but yet don't sseem to have any intention of ending the Tony Hawk franchise and that hasn't been relevant in like 9 years, strange indeed.
Thank god. .
Quote for saying exactly what I was going to say.
Like… exactly.. Even with the caps, the period, and the added spaces near the end.
Honestly, I've never really bought Guitar Hero for the sole fact that by the time i've bought one, there'd be another one in another couple of months.
You would think they'd learn from Call of duty…
Releasing just one quality (ish) title every year can reap you rewards with the added benefit of not running it into the ground so soon.
That said, it is sad. I loved these games, Rock Band especially.

I'm pretty sure Rock Band will still live on, its generally preferred greatly over Guitar Hero (Harmonix was the real talent behind GH anyway).

You might not run it into the ground as quick but you'll still see lower sales and profits eventually especially if future entries can't convince people to keep dumping money into your series or like with the Tony Hawk franchise you're releasing sub-par titles while the
competition is mopping the floor with you. On a related note Activision also for whatever reason decided to cancel the new True Crime game and just when it was looking like they were going to put out a TC game that actually looked and played good.
Call of Duty isn't really the best series to take lessons from either. It's still growing in popularity but nothing lasts forever.
Anyway…watch the whole plastic instrument thing become popular all over again in a console generation or two.
Thank.
God .
I was never good at Guitar Hero anyway, let alone the guitar on Rock Band. I've always been the singer on Rock Band.
And I'm with Robby. I need a Queen Rock Band. Maybe when the Queen movie comes out.

I heard there were some major problems going on at Harmonix, so I sorta just assumed Rock Band was dead also.
Rock Band 3 was excellent though, if they can recover and improve on it, that'd be swell. :ninja:
Harmonix your half-assed competition is out of the way. You now basically have a monopoly.
Make a Rock Band: Queen or a Rock Band: Iron Maiden or so help me God…
Actually, the real reason there aren't gonna be anymore GH games? They have to make room for FAMILY GUY:
My gaming professor is going to be pretty torn up about this. So is most of her class and TAs. I wonder what they'll have to say tomorrow.

Is the death of King of the Hill not enough for that monster?
And I'm with Robby. I need a Queen Rock Band. Maybe when the Queen movie comes out.
I don't know how they can have like 1000 songs and still not having anything I like. Queen is the obvious missing factor (the band had like 200 songs, ALL of them great rock anthems, come on!) , and they leaked a couple songs in there eventually, and the lil' bit of Dragon Force was nice though it was a joke/taunt in that it was impossible to play
but… Journey. Styx. Meatloaf. Elton John. Billy Joel. Beach Boys. I know those aren't guitar heavy so much or "Rock" in some cases, but... find a few songs and genres pre 1980. Some romantic ballads. Rock Band had the right idea with the Beatles, though releasing every freaking single album one by one might be a bit much.
Personally I still think Keyboard Hero would have been cool, since you'd basically learn how to actually play piano. They might have to simplify it some for gameplay, only one row of notes maybe, but it coulda worked.
They should had made a Guitar Hero: Megadeth or Slayer before kicking the bucket.
Guitar Hero: Big Four of Thrash at least.
Rock Band is too pussy and mainstream to do such an epic thing. :(

LOL @ the entire article
Wooooow.

Oh come on! At least make an American Dad Video game! Hasn't Family Guy been getting less and less popular lately anyway, or is that just us?
American Dad! is fucking awesome and I regret ignoring just a little bit it in the beginning of its run.
Seriously. A video game about Family Guy removed Guitar Hero from the future shelves.
Activision. You are made of stupid.
Bout fucking time.
Never could stand Guitar Hero. Was all about the Rock Band.
Rock Band isn't doing any better than Guitar Hero. Both are probably done for.

I dunno. If one of them dies that'll stop oversaturating the market with two identical products vying for the exact same audience, music, and plastic guitar sales.
And as its already been noted, both companies were coming out with regular expansion packs and spin off games. Market fatigue is inevitable at that pace. Of COURSE the market can't handle a novelty like a guitar playing game coming out 12 times a year.
They were releasing two-three games every year.
They killed themselves.
Fuck it. Let's go back to playing DDR, you guys!
DDR?
Fuck yeah! Gimme some of that Waka Laka!
Only if smile.dk's "Butterfly" gets included.
It was essentially a fad.
Too much plastic and too many people that didn't care.
It's kinda sad to see it get so big and then get passed off by activison like a whore.
The market for such stuff is really crappy though. The pieces of plastic were too easy to break and eventually trade stores stopped letting customers pawn their shit off cause there's no way to accurately test it in a retail setting without having a constantly running copy of the game set up. And then you'd have to play for a bit. So the fact that you couldn't find used instruments hurt the sales…. not to mention that it was pretty hard to find specific instruments. Most stores just carried the bundle with the game most people already owned. So companies and consumers just said FUCK IT. Also, many of the later installments would come out... sell out for like the 5 preorders it got.... and then NO ONE would by it. I swear.... we have the EXACT same BRAND NEW bundle for power gig: rise of the six string, that no one will EVER fucking buy. First shipment too.
It was a bubble... they milked it for all it was worth... and the bubble burst. So they tried to mop up the rest of it and squeez out any leftover juice.... which only cost them more money in the end.
The stuff belongs in a bar next to a karaoke machine.
I heard The Gig was pretty mediocre…maybe even bad as a game though.
Billy Joel's "Piano Hero".
@JERK:
Billy Joel's "Piano Hero".
I would buy this if, and only if, I could play the piano, sing into a microphone, and have mug of beer that refills after I complete a song.
Hell, I'd just buy it.
This doesn't bother me. In all of guitar hero, there were like maybe 40 songs that I actually liked. Half of the rest I actively disliked.
Does that mean I have bad taste, or is the Guitar Hero library filled with crap?
oops, I mean, was filled with crap.
I would buy this if, and only if, I could play the piano, sing into a microphone, and have mug of beer that refills after I complete a song.

The piano riff from stiletto should autoplay whenever I'm browsing a thread.
Mods?
Good riddance is all I have to say. It was just the same damn game repeatedly released, sometimes several in one year. The cheap whoring was worse than the Dragonball Z games, and now that's saying something.
As everyone else said THANK GOD.
Series was dead after 2 once Harmonix split to make Rock Band.
Only if smile.dk's "Butterfly" gets included.
You are my friend forever.

Aye! Nigga stole my post!
Fuck it.
We will all be friends forever.
Not a surprise, as mentioned before, they ran the franchise into the ground and it costs money to license a never-ending stream of content, which slowly gets more and more diluted as they run out of "new" classics that people WANT to play.
Also, Rock Band 3 is essentially the pinnacle of this game form, so even if they hadn't been jettisoned by Viacom, their franchise would quickly have fizzled out as well. The band-based popular music game genre is complete.
Guitar Hero was eh for me. Always hurt my eyes. The only one I wanted was Beatles. And even then I didn't bother with it since I didn't wanna pay full price for another guitar and the game (considering I have one for the PS2 and brother has one for the Wii.)
But for another Family Guy and another Wipeout (not the racing one.) game? That's just retarded.
Aye! Nigga stole my post!
Fuck it.
We will all be friends forever.
lol, that song
you guys are great
But yeah, the market was really oversaturated. Looking at the wiki, there were TWENTY FIVE Guitar Hero games released since the franchise started 5 years ago. TWENTY FIVE. And that's not even including the different SKUs. Between the games for different systems and bundle packages, Activision released 25 SKUs in 2009 alone. Including Band Hero, On Tour: Modern Hits, Metallica, DJ Hero, Van Halen, and Guitar Hero 5 –- jesus, this isn't even including the competing Rock Band games.
fucking idjits
It was an alright series even after it changed developers. World Tour being my favorite of the bunch. Still you can only tweak the gameplay and use as many rock songs for so long.
Sadly that's how the video game industry gets: follow with a fad and milk it for all it's worth until it finally goes away. Been like that since platformers actually.
Though what they're replacing it with…sadly McFarlane's shows are a tad like the Simpsons now: living off braindead fans who really can't think outside the box and don't realize how stupid (or in the Simpsons case, way past it's prime) it really is. (though I have heard from a friend that American Dad! at least is more tolerable but I've had a bias against McFarlane since at least some of the Johnny Bravo era...)
Final DLC : Hit The Road Jack edition.

Dammit Activision. I can't boycott you if you have Bioshock!
Looks like this could be why they cancelled these games:

I am totally fine with this.
Harmonix made the original Games, so let the masters have the genre with Rock Band.
Plus, I already have The Beatles: Rock Band, I'm fine.

The all new Wii Yacht.
Because you sure as hell never thought of playing games with a boat before !
i was never into these guitar games. maybe if I could play megaman themes on it or something…
I approve of this piano hero idea though. I would much prefer to tickle the ivory.
As for DDR: I'll take butterfly with a side of captain jack. ooh ya. gotta have my captain jack! XD
Piano ? Why not go the whole way and make Organ Hero ? :ninja:
