Oh. That just doesn't make sense to me as far as depowering them and nearly making them extinct. However, I could see them favoring the Avengers winning a conflict for that reason.

oh I misunderstood where you were coming from, sorry.
It may have been an idea that they thought would work since they are probably running out of original ideas…Which brings me to my love/hate relationship with Hope. Mind you, I really didn't start actively reading the comics again till AVX issue 0, and have gathered that she is the mutant messiah, but I really can't find a way to truly like her. At first I liked her because of that one scene where she took on those snake-motif villains and loved her little quip on finding out about that one guy's prosthetic arm till she sliced it off. Now that the Phoenix Five exist, she has lost favor with me...
Hopefully training with Spiderman will change her around (still trying to wrap my brain around Spiderman training anyone)

Marvel's EiC during the '00s has stated many times that mutants origins are lazy and that he doesn't think the X-Men deserve as much attention as the Avengers. So the Avengers were joined by Wolverine and Spider-Man, the mutants were depowered and stopped playing a role in the "main" Marvel Universe (they were absenst from every event post-House of M), got a bunch of shitty artists on the flagship books while the Avengers got the best of the best, stopped being promoted as much and this was all BEFORE movies played a role. And for a while the Avengers did outsell the X-Men, but since Regenesis last year the X-Men have consistently outsold the Avengers again even with the massive hype marketing of the movie. The Avengers in the comics just don't have the lasting appeal of the X-Men, yet Marvel keeps giving them the preference treatment. They should realise by now that the people who watch the movie aren't going to jump into the comics.
Hope is better in Cable's series and her own, Generation Hope. The latter also has a character that is based on Britta. She's the worst. Hope is supposed to be a teenage girl Cable, and she's kind of a bitch, but that is preferable to the little girl depiction she has in AvX.

See I knew she was trained by Cable, so I was expecting her to be kick-ass…
Guess I decided to jump in a little late :\
I will look into that Generation Hope though, any more recommendations Kaiolino?

New X-Men by Grant Morrison
Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon
Uncanny X-Force
Uncanny X-Men by Kieron Gillen (from the beginning)
Messiah Complex, Second Coming and Schism (the big storylines)And if you don't have a problem with older comics, Chris Claremont's original X-Men (and New Mutants and Excalibur) run is one of the greatest of all time.

Well, this is some good news. =)

So much disdain for the Avengers… o.o
-
I'd care more about them if they weren't rich people living in an ivory tower.
I do like Kurt Busiek's run and the first year or so of New Avengers.

I've been thinking about getting into western comics lately, can anybody recommend me a place to start, besides DC and Marvel stuff. I don't feel like touching their confusing universes yet. I've been thinking about checking out the Watchmen or Y: The Last Man. Any tips or recommendations? I'm pretty much just asking for beginner level comics.
Ongoing Single Issues:
Saga - Brian K Vaughn
Saucer Country - Paul Cornell
Mind MGMT - Matt Kindt
Dial H - China MievilleTrades:
Swamp Thing - Alan Moore
Shade the Changing Man - Peter Milligan
Sweet Tooth - Jeff Lemire
Sandman - Neil Gaiman
Anything by Grant Morrison though Invisibles is probably the most self contained.Despite some of these fall under DC they are self contained, mature and push the medium forward without resorting to superhero melodrama. This is the stuff I look for in comics (or: weird, avant garde and post modern stuff) so if that's not your thing then ignore the latter half of my list since it's pretty much the British Invasion Vertigo stuff.

I read Sandman Mystery Theater a while back and really enjoyed it, but I also remember hearing a lot of good things about Swamp Thing.
-
I reccomend Dan Slott's run of She-Hulk. Trust me, its the comic book series that got me into comics and its really fun to read. I wished there was another She-Hulk series right now.

I love Swamp Thing but there are so many runs that I can't judge the entire series as a whole.
Alan Moore's is the best in my opinion as it tackles so many different socio-economic themes (nuclear proliferation, women's rights and societal expectations) while maintaining entertaining horror story lines. Scott Snyder's current run, though critically acclaimed, doesn't have the same feeling as Moore's. It's way too decompressed and focuses on action and horror without the substance. Though don't get me wrong, it's one of the best ongoings I'm buying, just the plot of this second/third story arc is moving at a snails pace. -

Thanks man I appreaciate it! Tons of series there. For those on-going seres, how would I get the previous issues in that series? or am I better of getting waiting for it to be released in tpb or whatever they're called. Or should I just download them for free? haha… I would like to collect comics though, it seems fun.

A](http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=62892)lonso says it's not like DC's reboot.
Just a relaunch. Team rosters are getting switched up, people get new costumes.
CONTINUITY STAYS THE SAME.!
Everyone looks alright.
Can't say I love Cap's new suit. Looks too much like Ultimate Cap (maybe to go in line with the new Avengers Assemble show?)
Also, Spidey no longer has the stripe things going down his arm, making his costume more like the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.
I still think Thor deserves a cape.
The guy with the big gun looks to be Cable. Sweet!
Do we know who the new Iron Man is yet? Well, I don't…
Rocket Raccoon! Maybe because of the GotG movie in a couple years?
The robot near Hulk looks like Skeets and the Fantastic 4's Herbie fused.Probably the biggest thing (to me) is MARVEL GIRL!
JEAN GREY IS COMING BACK!!
Through time travel. Weird!EDIT: Holy cow, I've just realised the red-suit X-Man with the glowing 'X' on his face is...Cyclops?? Whoa!
EDIT2: Okay, new Iron Man is Rhodey. Sweet!I don't mean to be the odd guy out by throwing out random questions as I don't follow American Comics
But when in the world did Black Nick Fury find his way into the 616 universe?

The ongoings I suggested are all under 5 issues so far so they should still sell the back issues of them and possibly cheaper then retail.

He's White Fury's illegitimate son.
-
^That part is fine if a bit contrived, but when the story has him getting his eye injured by a villain (thus requiring an eyepatch), has his real name be Nick Fury Jr., and team up with agent Phil Coulson, it's a bit too obvious how Marvel is trying to tie-in with the Avengers movie success.
-
Either that or Black Nick Fury has become so damn popular that he's starting to supplant the original even in his own contuinity I mean it's already happened in virtually all of the modern Marvel animated series.
-
Well I know there are a lot of Marvel readers on this discussion topic so I apologize if I'm sounding ignorant throughout this post:
Well now that the disclosure is out of the way I just want to ask if there is much love for creativity within Marvel? The reason I'm really enjoying current DC right now is because of the "Dark" section which has allowed creative teams to do whatever they want with D-list characters through re-imagining and an overall sense maturity and departure from normal superhero stories. The whole section basically feels like classic Vertigo or, to a large extent, a lot of indie comics that are coming out from Image, Dark Horse ect. Does Marvel have this? I was reading Journey Into Mystery but that was still bogged down by a lot of Thor mythos which stopped it from being self-contained and I can't really find any other cult series on the recent Marvel solicits. To further justify my argument, Marvel NOW has only advertised additional Avengers and X-Men books only catering to the most hardcore of superhero fans. Now I'm not trying to make a "Marvel sucks" argument, I love their characters but I was hoping for more diversity in their line thanks to the relaunch and instead I find now costumes and a couple of creative change-ups.
-
The only big series of Marvel even I following is the upcoming new Ms. Marvel series (with her becoming the new Captian Marvel), the new Hawkeye series (which is going also have my favorite young avengers character Kate Bishop in it as a main character.) and the two Hulk series (Incredible Hulk and Red-Hulk). I hope soon they relaunch the Runaways and get a new She-Hulk series. Hell, a new Young Avengers series would be nice.
-
My favorite Comic Books i read are
Everything With Deadpool
Dial H
Megaman Archie Comics
Nextwave
The Tick
Superman/Batman Public Ememies
Superman/Batman Vengence
Scott Pilgrim(If it counts)
Runaways
and Power Pack -
Only Western comics I've read this year are the EC Archives (collections of Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, Weird Science, etc…) and King City.
Really can't wait for Brandon Grahm to start volume 2 of King City. -
Wow, I didn't see this coming starting at issue 58 of Hulk, the series name is going to change to Red She-Hulk. With Betty becoming the main character. I'm regular reader of Hulk, its kinda sucks that Red Hulk story going to end. But I'm happy that one of the She-Hulks is getting a series now. But I wish it was Jen. I hope this leads to Jen get a new series down the line.
-
I thought Red Hulk's series was switching to She-Rulk?
If he has a series…
I can't get to comic shops a lot... -
Red Hulk series is called Hulk.
-
Oh. That's lame.
But thank you! -
Question for anyone that picked up Swamp Thing 11
! So is Rotworld just an alternate world/meta space? If that's so does that mean this giant crossover that's been in the works since the birth of the new 52 won't even take place in the conventional world? And by extension, all the characters that have been teased to appear (Beast Boy, Poisen Ivy, Deadman, Frankenstein) will be different entities entirely leaving no character development towards the supporting cast?
I kind of hope that I'm wrong about this assumption because that'd be kind of lame.

Well both the "green" and the "red" are both metaphysical planes so I would assume Rotworld is about characters that are connected to the red and the green entering the "rot" in order to combat it at it's source.
-
Anyone else reading the Spidermen comic?

Yeah, though that does make the teaser in the Animal Man Annual a bit less impactful (SPOILER: all the dead superheroes in a run down Metropolis).
Also was a little disappointed with Batman 11 , this year long storyline ended extremely averagely in my opinion. I won't go into detail now but if anybody is interested in why this wasn't the most "epic" thing since Morrison stuff I'll post it in the thread.

@No:

Well first I'd like to make it clear that I thought it was a good arc and in total 7.5/8 out of 10.
Problems I had in retrospect (Spoilers be warned):
- Owl fatigue: The story essentially went for a full year and then had a pretty open ending making it clear that the whole overarching epic is not over just now. The thing is I think the story would have benefitted if Snyder ended the first arc at issue 7 with Batman escaping the Owls and defeating the first Talon then moving on with the next story and leaving the arc with Owlman for a while so he could foreshadow events and set up character pieces so the main antagonist does nor just pop up out of nowhere.
- Lincoln March: I liked the idea of Lincoln being the antagonist (from his first introduction I thought to myself "man he's gonna be the bad guy isn't he?") but after issue 3 he just disappears from the story to come back for a page in 9 where he's been shot and then does the whole "I'm your brother in 10 and 11". This is why I think there should have been a gap between Court of the Owls and Night of the Owls so Snyder could have developed his supporting cast. I would have cared so much more about the final fight/reveal if I got to know about the character but he just seemed to fade into the background meaning that the readers couldn't really be the "World's greatest detective" like the protagonist of the story.
I didn't really have a gripe about the final fight like a lot of people though the grandious speech at the end was a tad jarring. I think the story worked well but it could have been paced better. You'd think that after a year some secrets/motivations about the court would be told. Regardless I really enjoyed the ending scene with Bruce, Dick and Alfred and the backup added a lot more to the Batman Owlman relationship but yeah this ending was pretty average compared to the stuff we were getting nearly a year ago.

I read book 1 of the Saga of the Swamp Thing today…
I really loved it!
I never read much with Swamp Thing. Just this, Brightest Day and his brief appearance in the Boy of Steel.
But I love him... -
So the Comix app on my phone has $0.99 Marvel Mondays and they are offering the 2008 run of Guardians of the Galaxy, so I downloaded the first three issues…any comments on it before I jump in?

Anyone else reading the Spidermen comic?
I am, just picked up #2 & #3 the other day.
I'm curious as to what Mysterio is actually trying to do in this series (besides the usual). But to be honest, they could just throw that storyline away and just have Peter dealing with Miles, the Ulti-verse, and the reactions of the people who live there to him, and I'd be just fine with that. The end of #3….UGH, MY HEART.
Speaking of Marvel comics, next month I'm going to start the second-ever subscription to one of there titles. I just hope this new Hawkeye book is going to be good (and my heart doesn't get broken like it was by Thor: The Mighty Avenger)

If I remember correctly (I jumped back onto the comic bandwagon when AXV started) Aunt May is dead in Peter's world right? That's what I remember from reading somewhere and wasn't sure if it transitioned over Mephistos tampering. Seeing the two people he loved that are supposed to be dead in his world had to be heartwrenching…least it was to me...T_T
Of course Mysterio may be the main villain of this one, I really want to say that he's the bridge for Pete to get into the Ultimate world and just have him mill about behind the scenes...
Like I said before I just got back into Marvel comics, how did Peter die in the Ultimate series?

She wasn't dead, but in very poor health; Aunt May was the major reason for Mephisto's tampering and the 're-make' of the Spider-Man book:
The demon Mephisto offered to restore Aunt May's health at great personal cost to Peter, his life, and his marriage to his wife, Mary Jane. Agreeing to the terms, Mary Jane and Peter had reality altered so that May lived, Spider-Man's identity was once again a secret, and Harry Osborn was still alive. The cost of Mephisto's offer was the erasure of Peter and Mary Jane's marriage.
She's now alive and healthy, and married to J.J.J.'s father, J.J.J. Sr.
As for Ultimate Peter…well, it was a bad day all around for the poor kid. It was the combination of a) taking a bullet for Captain America, b) fighting the Six and Green Goblin in his own front yard, and c) being caught in an explosion.
As sad as all of it was, Ultimate Fallout, the 6 issue series showing the aftermath of Death of Spider-Man, was just gutwrenching. It was also our first look at Miles Morales, the new Spider-Man.

Grant Morrison has stated that he's leaving superhero comics after Action Comics #16 and Batman Inc #12 though will definitely return in later years (WHERE'S MY MULTIVERSITY!)
I'm kind of sad about the news, thought that he would do an Action Comics saga that spanned years much like his Batman epic.
Seems that a lot of talented writers are jumping ship to Image these days and I think my DC pull list will be shrinking whereas my love for Image is increasing.
-
Rob Liefeld will be leaving all his DC properties in late 2013 as well, it seems.
Don't really care about either of them too much, myself.
Image has been grabbing a lot of big creators from both of the Big Two, though. I only followed Brubaker to Fatale, since he's an absolute fantastic writer. I thought about Hickman's Manhattan Project and Vaughn's Saga, but neither really grabbed me.
-
@Syan:
Rob Liefeld will be leaving all his DC properties in late 2013 as well, it seems.
Oh no. But his art is just so amazing.
-
Though this is only my opinion, it could be argued that Grant Morrison is one of the many from the British invasion that revolutionized the comic books medium whereas Liefeld helped bring it into stagnation.

Anyone here reading the New 52 Teen Titans stuff?
I'm debating about finally caving and picking up all the issues despite having been so reluctant about it for months. Simply because New Teen Titans is my absolute favorite run of any character or group, DC or Marvel, period. I have all 3 Omnibuses and a copy of every issue I can find.
Anyway, my local comic book store has every issue released to date, and the owner is willing to cut me a deal if I buy the whole run to date.
Should I do it, or am I just going to hate what I find?
-
It's polarizing. Most people either love or hate it. Personally, it was one of my favorite books in the New 52.
-
It's written by Scott Lobdell, so if you loved '90s X-Men, you'll love this.
On the other hand, if you loathe '90s X-Men (like I do), then you should definitely steer far awat from the title.
-
I have the first 9 issues and I have to say…I'm not really impressed with it...
-
Yeah, personally I'm not a fan of it either. I toughed it out the first few issues because Tim Drake is one of my most favorite characters in all of DC, but eventually I gave up and drop this, I just doesn't care about it at all. Nothing like The New Teen Titans imo. I know this will make me sound like that kind of fan, but I miss Tim Drake as he was in Young Justice, I don't like the development that he underwent post Infinite Crisis. I hoped that things will change back with the relaunch, but if TT is any indication that is sadly not the case.
-
About to read my first Western comic. Haha…. I'm starting with Wanted by Mark Millar. Thoughts?
-
omg, avx ftw
