Activision PSN Black Ops servers may be closed

In response to ongoing connection issues and vocal customer criticism, a spokesperson for Activision has told an angry PlayStation 3 owner that the publisher may shut down Call of Duty: Black Ops’ PlayStation Network servers.

Senior support representative Dov Carson replied to blogger Jason Koblovsky’s complaints by advising that Activision are prepared to close the PSN servers.

“The publishers have the right to shut down the servers for their game at any time as well which based on the number of reported posts from users may be a viable solution over the free PSN,” he wrote.

Carson suggested to Koblovsky that the latter return his Black Ops disc to Activision, offering a “one time courtesy” exchange for another title, another platform’s version of Black Ops, or an unopened disc to return to a retailer.

Sister studio Infinity Ward also seems to be giving up on Sony’s network, laying the blame for Modern Warfare 2’s security issues at the platform holder’s door.

Now now.. this rehashed COD is not the point of the article, but the fact that Activision would go so low as to do this.

I'm sure anyone who got the 360 version is glad they did. This must suck for PS3-only owners who regularly play Black Ops.

Anyway, he should at least force you to play Reach. I myself was starting to get bored of it since it just wasn't as fun as 3 but Grifball came out and my God is that fucking fun and addictive.

It was a bitch on solo. I apologize for having hyped it to kingdom come. I was a fool. It's still a great game. I'd even say it's one of the best shooters of this gen, possibly of all time. But it was not what it was hyped up to be, at all.

Yeah this clearly reads like a customer support dude being bored and blabbering on for a bit, then the internet looking at a headline and saying OH MY GOD! ACTIVISION IS GOING TO REMOVE ONLINE PLAY FROM THEIR FLAGSHIP FPS SERIES JUST MONTHS AFTER IT WAS RELEASED! Yes, that's really how the biggest game publisher maintains its market share.

I never said that. No those companies are eons away from being "good" as well, but Activision has a man named Bobby Kotick working for them that wants to make you pay to watch the cutscenes of a game! I don't have an online source for that one, but I got it from my Game Informer a few months ago, Issue 211 with the "Resistance 3" cover. I have never heard of any other company even thinking of trying something like that.

Allow me to put the article directly here. This is the exact words from my Game Informer issue 211, page 35 and to get really specific, the bottom left side of the page.
"The arrogance of Activision's Bobby Kotick knows no bounds. He recently told a conference that he wants to "capitalize on the relationship that we have with our audience" by selling hour-and-a-half movies of cutscenes for $20 or $30 within the next five years. As crazy of an idea as it is, there will be certainly be takers. What would really be evil is if a company-perhaps Koticks-makes you spend extra for cutscenes as the only way to experience them in your games"
So I did slightly misread it, but it's still a "wtf" situation

I think it's more that Bobby Kotick is a man who aggressively hates video games and his fellow man and would slit his momma's throat for a nickel than it is that Activision is "evil." He also talks a WHOLE LOT OF SHIT that isn't necessarily reflected in the games released by Activision all the time. Beyond that though there are things that the company has done under his reign that have been somewhat indefensible.

Though with your assertions that Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are hardly "good" companies either, I am markedly curious as to what companies you think are "good" companies, and why.

One would hope that in the light of fiasco's like the Real ID System Blizzard and the reaction many players had to purchasable vanity items that would have the acumen to realize the seething, spittle-flecked rage that gamers (justly) have for Bobby Kotick and keep managing their company as they assert they always have.

Blizzard has always been pretty firm about maintaining that Activision doesn't interfere in what they do: and rightly so - Blizzard's a gold mine and was a gold mine long before the acquisition. And if players started to see signs of Activision in Blizzard, the company would lose a whole lot of the good will they've built up over the years with the people that play their games.

To their credit, I think Blizzard knows that.

In all honesty the only thing I play from Blizzard is Diablo. I do see your point though. Blizzard would be fools to let something that stupid happen to them. To answer your previous question. I like Team Ico and Platinum Games are the only "companies" that aren't just after our money. For the most part I think it's just people who aren't evil in companies. Mr.Kojima is a good example…except he doesn't think games are art...which is unfortunate. Others include Shinji Mikami, Tim Schafer, Suda 51, and a couple others that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

They froze once, but that was the end of any problems I've had with it.
