I keep seeing complaints about Luffy being animated in the final shot as he was crying. I have to ask, what else could he have been doing? I'm trying to think of another way they could've handled it, and I'm coming up blank.

I always assumed that was when he "broke" and went comatose, so after some initial crying, just nothing other than

He was obviously laughing to tears at Ace's death.
-
I imagined the face just being completely still as the camera zoomed out. The animation might have been fine if the head didn't just move up and down like it did. There was too much animation to it.
-
They did use Oda's patented white glassy eyes of trauma, so that coupled with the open mouth that was clearly a negative expression, I didn't really see how it wasn't effective. I think the only problem might stem from the fact that prior to this scene, we hadn't seen that type of take done in a non-comical situation (usually used in response to something outlandish or to someone beating a character over the head for their shenanigans).
I just think people are blowing it way out of proportion is all. I can understand how it might have rubbed some the wrong way.
-
Don't worry, guys.
! The death is only temporary anyway.
Oh really? Cool.
! But seriously though, it's not.
-
For those complaining about no half-beard next week, it is a kid show over there after all, and I think, other than the obvious, (he'll probably still have a full head,) when they do the whole silhouette thing with the sun behind him, it'll still look similar to the manga with half his stache missing and stuff.
Still sux, but it's not all that bad.
-

We just saw the entrance wound of a guy who got punched by lava.

Worst thing ever is that it's rated 13+. I mean everyone who is 13 and older can watch Ace getting pwned and Whitebeard losing half of his face. But srsly I doubt that 13yr olds watch that. Prolly kids 7-10 do it…
@ Cyan Hell yeah.

Hey, if anyone has twitter, let's try and make #RIP Portgas D. Ace a trending topic.

Right now, an anime watcher is in excruciating pain over Ace's death….but remember...
! -pQrBd0G6wg&feature=related
I guess having your head made of Jello would be painful.
Also I'm surprised nobody dug up Bob Dylan for death themes…

"Studies show that those who sleep longer than 8 hours die earlier. "
That's why Ace died. It wasn't the punch.

There was no sound coming from him in the manga. That lead me to believe that he just sorta… broke and was just stuck like that. As someone else said, comatose.
The beginning started out too slow and I was worried but once it actually got to the part where Luffy's holding Ace, it was good. It did what it needed to do. I love how in the beginning when Luffy was first asking for someone to help Ace he sounded so casual like nothing was wrong as if it didn't hit him just then. That's very Luffy like. I also liked him asking Iva for help. That was a welcome addition... and maybe I'm remembering wrong but I don't remember the doctor actually looking at Ace in the manga. I just remember Ace saying it was no good.
But overall the episode worked. Toei usually does come through when they need to. I did tear up a bit. I do kind of wish they left Luffy silent in the end though. But maybe it's just me.

My moustache….!! You bastard! When they count off the wounds, they have to add, "…and half a mustache burned off by some douche."
-
! Even in death, even with half his moustache gone, he would never fall.
-
Considering the size and width of his moustache you would think he would lose his balance.
-
That said, I like after the Shabondy shot, the fodder think they've actually hurt Akainu. "How's that?…...Oh wait, you are a non-BB Logia".
-
And now I gotta sleep. remembers the current page so he can continue reading 2morow

My god! But Marco will bring him back, just watch.

Here's a good sad song I listened to the exact same day it came out in the manga.

Ok, normally I am a huge crybaby. And I mean HUGE crybaby!
But I haven't shed one tear. Something went terribly wrong.
What is wrong with you? I usually don't cry being a man and all, but I admittedly dropped a few tears.
I'm only kidding, btw.

HE WILL RETURN AS GOL D. ACE.

Wow, that was pretty powerful. Though a lil dragged out if you ask me.

You know the really sad thing is? Ace died still wearing those stupid-ass slippers. Now, that's twisting the knife.

Nay, the sad thing is that Ace never did reach his home planet.

In the Manga the Luffy face at the end of this chapter made me kinda laugh but in the Anime, with Luffy sobbing in the background, it was heart-wrenching..
-
I held out hope for this episode, I really did. After last episode it was hard, but I managed.
Then they let me down even worse than before. Whose idea was it to add other people to the Ace dying in Luffy's arms scene? It's a god damn travesty. Past that it was slightly better, but there was just too much cutting away and emotion from Luffy. His stunned disbelief fit way better than this crying and denial.
The chapter punched me in the gut, all the episode did was kick me in the nads.

I know this is the RAW Discussion but since this topic gets way more episode reaction posts then the Funi Simulcast topic I'll post my thoughts here and focus on the more specific Funi-related things in that topic.
First up, I'll get the bad out of the way. There was only one specific scene Toei misdirected. While it was major I'm willing to forgive them since the manga readers felt it was a little over the top too. It was Luffy's anguish at the end of the episode. I was hoping Toei would have had Luffy frozen in horror like he seemed in the manga. Instead he just broke out crying with the same extreme expression he had in the manga. The way this was animated kind of broke the tension the episode had and looked a little silly. I may think differently upon rewatching it but it came off as a little awkward, but outside of that…
Thank you Toei, this episode was paced very well and I never felt the flashbacks broke the air of what was occurring in the episode. Also, I noticed that the usual Luffy and friends intro was not present.
Thank you Kazuya Hisada (animation director), all the shots were done well and the episode was really top quality.
Thank you Kohei Tanaka, your music (or lack of music in some scenes) really helped push the emotion of the episode.
Thank you Toshio Furukawa and Mayumi Tanaka, as your performances for Ace and Luffy really carried the episode.
and Thank you Funimation, not only for streaming this episode but for not having ONE annoying commercial during the simulcast.
It's like EVERYBODY involved in One Piece were all on the ball and did their best not to screw this up and they succeeded! It was a very powerful episode and restored my hopes that Toei is fully on the ball.
It all wraps up with a bang from this point on so One Piece is starting off 2011 on the right foot.

Yes, we all care about Ace's shoes.
Hell, they should have given him some jordans. -

Just a question.

Wow, amazing directing for this episode. Great art and animation as well. Perfect.
This episode made my eyes very watery.
Next week looks great, but man…I hope what I saw is just part of the fight.

Well done episode. Should be interesting to see how next week turns out.
