This is by far one of the best films I have ever seen. The utterly solid acting and true depth of character shown throughout sets the bar in film making. I cannot fault this film in any way other than feeling Churchills hair was slightly out of place.😁

I must ask that you don't base your thoughts on this poor trailer and go see this movie to experience something memorable.

It would be more appreciated if the people who are going to watch it have a knowledge on what it is based on.

Well for those who don't know how to use a search function here you go…

Tells the story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George ('Bertie') reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stammer and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war.

This is a biopic about how King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II, overcame his stuttering problem. Widely considered by all but his father unfit to be king, George is reluctantly thrust unto the throne and into the spotlight after his brother is forced to abdicate. Overshadowed on the global stage by powerful orators like Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini, the King relies on the help of a little-known Australian speech therapist named Lionel Logue to find his voice and courageously lead his people into the most devastating war humanity has ever faced.

This is a powerful, hilarious and deeply moving story, told against the backdrop of a critical juncture in modern history, of the emergence of a deep friendship out of a professional relationship between two men who would otherwise never have socially interacted. The screenplay, written by David Seidler (who also wrote Tucker: The Man and his Dream), is excellent. The dry British wit is hilarious. I was literally slapping my knee during some of the scenes. Tom Hooper (Elizabeth I) does a superb job directing this movie. The buildup to the climactic finale is skillfully executed and prompted the audience to erupt into spontaneous applause. (Apparently, this also happened at the Roy Thomson Hall premiere.) Geoffrey Rush (Elizabeth: The Golden Age) does a fantastic job as Lionel Logue and Colin Firth (A Single Man) is excellent as King George VI.

I saw the second public screening of this movie at the Ryerson Theater during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Tom Hooper was present to introduce the movie. He was joined by Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush after the movie ended for a brief Q&A.

It turns out that David Seidler also had a stuttering problem as a child and drew inspiration from the king's struggle. Early in his career he wanted to write a screenplay about it. He dutifully asked the Queen Mother for permission. She agreed but told him "not in my lifetime". Little did he know she would live to be 101 and he would have to wait another 30 years.

Another interesting tidbit we learned was that near the end of the shoot, the crew finally located one of Lionel Logue's grandsons, who just so happened to live about 10 minutes away from the director. They got access to Lionel's diaries and correspondence and managed to incorporate some of it into the script.

I won't post anything else otherwise it might taint the actual viewing.

Yeah, I thought this movie was acted incredibly, shot well, and did a good job making an emotional connection. It also made a topic that would seem fairly striaghtforward and boring into something very interesting.

I'm sure it'll win some of the awards it's nominated for.

The statement was not meant solely for forum members or someone who happens to read this thread but movie audience in general. There are some who are ignorant of British history. Yes, a search function may help if they are interested enough to research it.

The information you posted is helpful anyways. Carry on.

Saw this movie a few days ago. Absolutely phenomenal. I highly recommend it to anyone. Geoffrey Rush was great as the speech therapist, as was Colin Firth as George VI.

I was really impressed with the acting. Its one of those films you see and actually sit through the credits at the end, and for all the right reasons.

Apparently people were getting up and applauding in some places…

Just saw it, it was such a damn good movie!

What surprised me was how out and out FUNNY it was.

Pretty much everything about it owned.
It was a perfect balance of art and entertainment, and considering it was based around largely two guys in a therapy session that's amazing.

The way it managed to capture the arc of George's ascendancy and the onset of World War II in such a short time, was….probably the most impressive part. There was just enough of all that around the main plot of George's speech therapy, it was perfect. Probably the best biopic I've seen.

Excellent cinematography, excellent screenplay, excellent acting. Excellent.

Also I was skimming wikipedia to see what kind of guy George really was and was delighted to see this.

George was appalled, however, when instructed by the South African government to only shake hands with whites, and referred to his South African bodyguards as "the Gestapo"

                              hahahaha, he owned!

What baffles me most about this movie is its R rating. What, just because George said "fuck" a bunch of times in one or two scenes that were played for comedic effect anyway? Most of us hear that word well before we're 13.

In the words of Ebert, this is a great film for teenagers.

Oh yeah, and Colin Firth won the Golden Globe for best actor, for what it's worth.

                                        Saw the movie.
Loved the humor, atmosphere, and acting.
This is also a movie I'll probably only see once.
I still think it's a great movie, but talking/dialogue heavy movies…they don't necessarily bore me, but whenever one runs for about two hours, it starts feeling long.
Note that two hours isn't usually long for me, but with movies like these, time can slow down and it can be very frustrating sometimes trying to wait. Like a really slow burn.
If it means anything, whenever there's a 'talking' story, I find that the ideal limit for me is something like half hour to an hour segments, like a television show.
And that's really where I stand on it, to be blunt.

Well, that's the strange thing for me: I was engrossed and entertained (if I wasn't, I would have fallen asleep or left the theater), but for some reason, when I see a move like this, I start feeling the seconds around 2/3rds of the way through.
I went through the same thing with Crazy Heart.
It might have also been because that I felt tired when watching. Not bored tired, but fatigue tired, like I hadn't gotten enough sleep.
And the worst part is that I went into the theater totally fine, but then I just got instantly tired at one point.
But no part felt like it was a waste of time, if it sounded like I was implying that.

Did you get enough sleep the night before? You keeping your blood sugar levels in check? They sell those sodas in the lobby for a reason (aside from ripping you off).

Well, I can understand that some movies can be pretty intense, especially if they go on for a long time, but I really can't understand why anyone would get physically tired while watching this movie. It's only about two hours, which is pretty standard and wasn't all that complex or anything. But hey, you feel what you feel.

Actually, funny story. I know I said this movie went by quickly, but I was suffering from constipation periodically throughout the second half of it and especially towards the last few minutes, so I was begging for it to be over by that point.

I really want to see this movie now, and I wish it didn't have a limited release, and I wish I had heard about it 2 months ago.

A splendid movie, truly entertaining. The acting was excellent Firth is a great actor and embraced the role of George fully. He and Rush had such chemistry every scene with the two together was a treat. A film which convinces with depth and dialogue rather than effects and 3D is a rarity nowadays.

If ever there was ever proof that J. K. Rowling was correct in trying to protect her property from unauthorized sequels, this is it. In an alternative re-telling, Dumbledore (who is excellent, by the way) dies again. It is touching to see this once powerful "king" succumbing to dementia. But was this due to Bellatrix Lestrange (also excellent) posing as the adult Harry's wife? Or Wormtail (in a bizarre self-parody) who has wormed his way into positions of power? Or was it due to Dumbledore's eventual mistreatment of Harry Potter (played excellently as an adult I have to say) with a resultant speech impediment that, lamely, becomes the central issue. The new actor playing Snape, in characteristic duplicity to "Prince Harry", was superb I have to say – I do hope we see more of him. The movie ends typically with Harry regaining control and with ominous signs of the return of "he who must not be named" (which leaves me looking forward to the sequel I have to admit).

All that build-up culminating into an incredible speech. I can't believe they went through the ENTIRE thing at every step down to the smallest details such as George's speech notes being divided by red lines to help in the pronunciation. The chemistry between Rush and Firth was insanely delectable. It totally deserved all the Oscars it got especially best picture.

A few days after I saw the film I saw Sir Derek Jacobi in person which was quite surreal.
