Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people shot

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, I just figured it would be the most appropriate location.

Earlier today congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other people were shot in Tucson, Arizona. 5 people were killed in the attack, including a District Court Judge, an aide, and a 9 year old little girl.
The attack is rumored to be spurred on by her voting 'Republican' on an issue.
Gabrielle Giffords sustained a shot to the head, and as of 1 o'clock was in surgery to remove the bullet from her head. She has since left surgery and is in Intensive Care as she remains in critical condition. Surgeons remain optimistic, but still on guard.
The shooter has been taken into custody and is currently being questioned by the Tucson Sheriff's office.

As an Arizona citizen, this has hit extremely hard. Especially since she has done so much for my city and surrounding area.
The best we can do is pray for the best that she survives.

I can understand that you are pissed but in situations like these just please ignore this. The whole ordeal is already tragic enough as it is and I think it effects us all emotionally. Well that blows. I don't follow politics, but it does make me a little mad when i hear things like this. How simple was this guy to thinking killing someone is actually going to change anything. But i think what really pisses me off is that he killed a 9 year old girl. I really hate a big group of people in this state, since i hear them talk about things like this when i'm on the bus, walking down the street, and even at work sometimes.

I live in Australia.

Post 1996 after a shooting incident we implemented strict measures surrounding the ownership and purchasing of firearms. Since that time we have had 1 further incident in 2002 at a University. Other then isolated incidents involving not involving mass casualties.

You guys have my sympathy and condolences.

Surely there must be a push for tighter gun control in your country, I will admit I know little of your gun laws or history. Hopefully there is a sollution out there and to the families of the Victims I hope they have the support they need in this time of regret and sadness.

The reason I posted about this incident is that I am an Arizona citizen and this incident has made a huge impact. Gabrielle Giffords has played a huge role in this state, a large part of that role being down in my area, contributing much to how the city and county are today. If I'm commiting bullshittery for posting something which directly influences me and my fellow Arizonans, then obviously the bullshit-o-meter needs to have its standards reset.

There is a push for tigher gun control, however there are too many who push back against it. It would be nice if there were a way to stop those occassional idiots from getting ahold of guns, however they're given voting rights like the rest of us and vote with those against the gun ban.

It's pathetic how some people think that using a gun to take another's life will make them a hero. It just makes them monsters.

I heard this on Twitter last night; it was spreading like wildfire all over it. It sounds awful. I can see where Luigi is coming from but I don't think it was right to say it on an occaision when something like this has happened. A bit disrespectful; no matter her nationality. I'm not going to pretend I knew of her; because I didn't; but she obviously seems to have been a respectable politician that worked hard for what she believed in.

And the death of that 9 year old girl is even more tragic.

I don't know if it was ever confirmed to be because she voted "republican" on one thing. She was a mild democrat to begin with, and wasn't afraid to go across party lines, which is one of the reasons I liked her so much.

I alone have two real life friends who live in Tuscon, one whose grandmother was almost at this literal event and wasn't because she was delayed by a repairman. One of my friends was shivering yesterday and I almost went over to her apartment just so she had someone to be with, but she was too speechless and didn't think she could talk to anyone atm. I know they've voted for, seen, and probably spoken to this woman.
I also have my best friend from CT who works for our local representative in DC and his building is next to Giffords.
And as you should already see we have a bunch of people HERE from Arizona and even Tuscon itself.
There's been a HUGE terrifying tension of disturbed frustrated anger in this country that has had us on edge wondering when it will pop, this isn't just some random event, whether this guy was politically motivated or not, it plays into all the fear and worry we've already had. It's bigger and more national then some random gunshots. You don't care though do you.

I know your moronic opinion is still boiling under the surface, just in passive aggressive form. This is something that actually effects living people who post here on a personal and second hand level. Of course it warrants discussion you idiot.

Wouldn't it be better to use example that was a little more tragic and less-american looking where argument up there was going to like 2004 tsunami? I didn't sob my heart out of that but it affected me a little more with over 200 000 deaths than 9/11.

It's definitely harder to find sympathy for events which aren't near you or don't directly affect you. In many cases, it's just the lack of communication about the events.

For example I'd never heard about the incident in South Sudan, primarily for the reason that I'm on the opposite side of the world. Just as I'm sure people on that side of the world have no idea that the incident which took place yesterday even occured.

The people like myself and Jerk Disease are definitely more torn up over the event because we have connections to Arizona.
But just because you don't have the same sympathy for the people here and don't have the interest in Gabrielle Giffords that we have doesn't mean you should take it out on us by insulting the incident and stirring up angry emotions even higher.
Right now I think it best to stop acting so pig headed or to just leave the thread. Humanity requires compassion. Start acting like one.

Out of all the tossers we've had here over the years one thing can be said, and that is that most of them had some sense of decency or shred of humanity visible. Even the racists, nazi's and anti muslim preachers showed at least some kind of tolerance or compassion to a particular group.
