Collier Coup & Choo's Smeking

I just got the latest Shonen Jump issue and, I am happy to report, the Arlong arc is in full swing. For those who dont' track SJ it goes from chapters 73 - 75. From Zoro's meeting Hachi to Luffy and Zoro hearing that Nami "killed" Usopp.

Changes worth noting:
Collier Shoot > Collier Coup - This surprised me, to be honest. They kept the "Collier" (with a side-note that it was French for "Neck Meat") but changed the Shot/Shoot to Coup. Assuming that I'm not just missing something, this seems an odd/interesting switch.

Chuu > Smek - This refers to the "Chuu" in Chuu's speech, not the name itself (I'll get to that next). Instead of a "Chuu" we get a "Smek." Not a HUGE deal to me really, as the whole point is that Chuu's supposed to be making kissy noises when he speaks. Though it does make the reason of his naming less obvious and it doesn't quite roll of the tongue as well, in my opinion.

Chuu > Choo - This time it's the name I mean. Again, not a huge deal to me. A bit annoying, but at least we won't need to worry about people mispronouncing it.

The only other notable points are two more new Viz spellings being revealed: Momoo and Kuroobi.

What do you guys think of the changes?

I got that too. I was a bit upset they got rid of Arlong's "Shahahaha." Yeah I noticed the Coup thing too. But isn't a "coup" a rebellion as in "coup d'etat" but the only French I know is from One Piece, so I'm not sure.

According to Dictionary.com coup is aFrench word, stroke, from Old French colp, from Late Latin colpus, from Latin colaphus, from Greek kolaphos.]

So that would mean that Shonen Jump was actually extra accurate by using a french word to describe 'shot' or 'stroke'. Kudos to Viz (ow, that really hurt typing that!)

Smek actually makes me laugh as it is rather like smeg (if you say it enough times fast). Fans of Red Dwarf will know this has a completely different meaning to kissy kissy noises.

Also according to Dictionary.com Smek is an acronym for Sand Mobility Enhancement Kit (US Army) which makes a lot of sense :D

What does that have to do with One Piece?

Well, SMEK refers to military equipment, military equipment is used by fighters, Chu (or Choo as he is now) is a fighter and so he is not making kissy noises he is advertising military equipment - probably for a commission.

Or it could have absolutely nothing to do with One Piece at all.

I prefer option one.

I don't care about the shoot/coup change, as long they keep the french terms for sanjis attacks I have no problem.

I'd prefer the 'chuu' sound to the 'smek'.

'Smek' doesn't sound right for a kissy noise. 'Smak' does. If you're going to change the sound which is obviously identified to him enough for it to be a name, go all the way and get it right.

Aside: I wonder if some "names" in the OP universe are really just nicknames that got permanently stuck. I can see it explaining both Chuu and Smoker's strangely perfect names. Perhaps Chuu's real name is something representative of the type of fishman he is. (what is he? I always thought angelfish)

I don't think "smek" sounds like a kiss sound at all. :/ They should have kept "chu", since that's what his name is. At least they're making SOME reference to it, though.

IMHO, Collier Coup is about 1000 times better sounding that Treachea Turnover Surprise. I wonder how it'll be when Sanji is pummelling Kuroobi. . . probably the same in the original.

It's a real shame the got rid of Arlong's "Shaahahaha!" Thems the breaks I guess.

I, for one, am satisfied by the "Shot = Coup" change. It translates it quite well, sounds good, and moreover DOES NOT INVOLVE A TURNOVER OR SURPRISE.

"Choo" is okay; it's a possible translation. And the "Smek" sounds quite a bit like a kiss, to me.

SJ's rekindled my interest, with this and the good handling of the Arlong arc (sans SHA-ha-ha) so far. If it keeps up like this, then OP has a chance in America.

I dont really mind the change in fact I like that Viz kept the Collier part and the Coup sounds cool. As for Chuu being change Choo is ok and Smek doesnt bother at all.

Well - Chuu IS his name, but it's onomatopoeia for a kiss. I guess if I were in that spot I'd either slap a footnote down about it or at least make his name 'Smooch' if I HAD to change it (Smooch isn't that far off and it's practically the same thing anyway). I have no idea wtf a smek is. O_o

Probably himself. I'll bet he was excited for a date on New Years and practiced so hard it became part of his speech, nly to wind up all alone. Forutnately, all he need do was talk to himself and he still got a kiss. So all ended well that night.

In French "coup" means a blow or a strike. Someone earlier said that it was used for an overthrow, which is kind of true. A "coup d'etat" (literally blow to the state) is an overthrow, which we use in English (and we often use "coup" as short, but this is mostly a thing we English speakers made ourselves). A "coup de pied" (foot blow) is a kick, and a COUP DE VENT! is a wind blow.

I love this translation, because honestly, "coup" makes more sense than "shot" or "shoot." No no complaints here.

I think "smek" sounds like a kissing sound… like you smack someone on the cheek.
