I can proudly say that I was always a supporter of Franky's new design!
Yeah, I said I liked his look, and that he looked like a boss. Maybe not those exact words but still.

Franky's design is still weird with the massive shoulders and being top heavy, other than the rockets and the nipple lights, but he seems to have become funnier, well in funnier situations post-timeskip.
I loved the panel where Franky was looking at the barrel with a puzzled look. Franky's design is really growing on me.

Sing it brother!
I was confused when people started hating on it.
I don't like the pillar arms, they are too bulky and angular to look at. I prefer a slender smooth design.
just ask,
why the captain is Van Der Decken, instead of Van D. Decken or Van Der D.Ecken

Um because He doesn't have a D. in his name.

I thought that the first couple chapters I saw him but the last few has really changed my opinion. He is now my favorite redesign and I think that I am actually liking this new look more than his old one…..this is probably due to the fact that Oda has gotten more used to drawing him now, if you look at the first chapters he was seen and then the ones he is in now, there is a noticeable difference, Franky is drawn much smoother and proportional..
Don't usually respond to the chapter a week stuff but I'm feeling a little more internet talky these days. Overall, I love how the journey to Fishman Island is basically a reversal of the Skypiea situation (remember how in Jaya you had the Monster Trio search that ship in barrels?). With some nice call backs to previous arcs (mainly how everyone was freaking out about the underwater ghost ship and when Brooke screams Usopp's like "You don't have to be scared!"). It seems Oda is easing us into the swing of things showing us that even though two years passed things are pretty much still One Piece. It will be interesting to see how this Van Der guy, Cariboo, and the Kraken play out in this arc (since this may be an Alabasta situation where we have a bunch of smaller arcs before we actually get to the destination).
O-chan
Gonna go ahead and say this.
Franky has consistently been the most aweso… SUUUUUUPER Strawhat pirate since the timeskip.
His face silently inching towards the scheming Cariboo has to be the funniest scene I've seen in months.
I loved Franky finding Coribou and well. And his nipple lights never fail to disappoint .
Yea I would go franky the monster trio and then Usopp for epicness though Usopp is not as steady as he started.
See as much as I hated Arlong, for some reason I got the vibe from Van Dekker of him being Arlong.
I really hope I am wrong.
Let's not let the pattern of "every time a mysterious new character shrouded in shadow appear, people start guessing him to be every possible character in One Piece ever" start again.

Like I said, I hope I am wrong. I was just the slender face and prominent jaw that gave me an inkling
How long will Luffy keep the Krakken? I wonder will he will be a part of the Crew? *(As a pet not nakama)
Nami : He might be hiding somewhere on this ship? Ewwww!
ahahahha
whose eye is that?

It's also almost certainly not, the hands aren't webbed.
whose eye is that?
the giant that punches the fish saying don't eat them?
the fishes eye?
can't be a strawhat or even coribu, cause the monster is BELOW the ship and this eye is looking up. all the strawhats are looking down if you notice.
I like Aohige's translation better for those panels better than mangastreams. :pouty:
I like how they tell you to look shit up on wikipedia. It's like "you want me to translate this shit? Well fuck you!"

strictly speaking they are slightly different, so not so much copy as great minds think alike, Brennen's new avatar completely trumps yours anyway.

sorry im just verry touchy about avatars
Well his plan should have been finding work at the nearest Bikini Mud Wrestling establishment. Or maybe he was going to pretend to be a mud Bath in the Girls Locker room.
"Oh wow Franky upgraded the bathroom to have a mudbath …. Robin come check out the mudbath."
Now you are giving me weird ideas for a doujinshi plot…
I know oda. He's my friend we go to birthday parties together and stuff, so he gave me this picture to show you a sneak peak of what Van Der Dekken looks like..

Good job, basing this shit off nothing, must've taken a lot of effort to put that theory together.

you have no idea. I couldn't sleep the night…HAHA!
I vastly prefer reading someone's reasoned and thoughtful post even if I disagree … Although at the same time I hope it also starts interesting debates, without the antagonism.
Exactly. I mean, we all joined this site to discuss our favorite manga, right? So anything that kills discussion is counterproductive. It's fine to disagree, it's fine to point out problems in someone's argument or reasoning or whatever. It's fine to correct someone, too – just try to do it in a way that won't kill the discussion with a fifty-post flame war ...
(or if you must start a flame war, do it in the non-OP General section of the site instead ...):ninja:
I guess Surume may get to usurp Chopper from the position of emergency food supply. =P
You read my mind…
@Dan:
How does that make "monster trio" canon? I don't read it that way at all. It's just Nami commenting on their strength.
Personally, i'm almost certain the concept isn't canon at all. It's just how the Mangastream guy translated it. It could easily be something like "now that those three strong guys are gone" or something like that. Besides, how the would Caribou know of the concept?
Good point!
I guess I should have said "the first time that the concept of Sanji, Luffy and Zoro being 'stronger than a Monster' was ever mentioned." (as opposed to the moment when someone specifically dubbed them "The Monster Trio".)
A parallel situation would be:
The first time someone in the manga noticed that Luffy's most treasured possession is his straw hat, vs. the first time that someone in the manga actually called Luffy "Straw Hat."
Even if the original Japanese words in any of those passages refers to Sanji, Luffy and Zoro as a "monster trio" – it's still not the same as being specifically named "THE Monster Trio" by someone. So I agree, there's no way that Caribou would have known.
This chapter was cool, funny and educational actually (made me wanna go read up on everything that was refferenced)
Excellent.
My work here is done.
allright a theory here. Van der dekken and his crew are Mermans. Fish from their waist down!. I just feel it. its a race that we only see 2 ppl from! not even male.

I think that as well… They aren't cursed ghosts or something like that. They are simply fishmen which are living under this theme to put fear into the world

putting aside the blobfish thing, look closely at his finger - you can see something attached to the side of his finger - it's the flap of skin that creates webbed fingers.
So, they are confirmed fishmen for me.
That was once again an interesting and fast-paced chapter, I really like the adventure feeling we're getting in the last chapters.
Now onto the discussions:
The eruption of the sea vulcano will most likely create a diversion to let the SH's escape from our beloved Dutchman, and will most likely drive our heroes into a tight situation. I guess here the "cloth shark" will come in and help out by leading them to FI. it's also possible that Caribou might escape during all of this - maybe the barrel will burst when the ship is facing troubles with the vulcano?
Anyway: Lot's of new things were introduced this chapter and FI is shaping up to become a REALLY long arc.
Here a quick overview (beware, big image file):
!
When did oda state that he'll relase the world map in the end? (I speculated that in the geography thread years ago)
I'm looking forward to Brook meeting Shanks and returning his hat.

Brook's goal was wrong.
Other than that, pretty cool.

Brook Top Hat looks awesome on Shanks though.
Stop mocking over a small mistake.

That makes for a pretty hilarious mental image. I can't even decide if the crown adds to it or not.
@Sea:
Stop mocking over a small mistake.
I don't think anyone is mocking him for it, just having a little fun while pointing out a minor mistake. When did you get so thin skinned?
If there is a problem, it's that this is off topic, so I apologize for endorsing that.

Wow, just noticed that. Well, he sure can give away his hat now that he has a crown
And I'm not the author of this thing, I'm just doing some viral marketing since such a nice overview should help keeping discussions a bit more focused. The link to the creator is in my signature.
So is there air supply running out or is it just a lot lower than it was when they started due to all the attacks they've been using inside the ship?
Still don't like the god's curse. We have already met god.
god's curse = devil fruit. I bet it.
@Joe:

I think both ya know like the Coup de Burst used some air but way more than there breathing is.

A devil fruit that means he can't leave the sea? That's pretty much…no, its EXACTLY opposite of a DF.
