@Aaronrules380:
So we can't discuss issues that Oda hasn't explicitly brought up in the manga? That is idiotic. Especially since fiction DOES influence the perception of people who read it. We're talking about a real life issue as it relates to the manga. What the fuck is wrong with that? And nobody here said they think Oda is a misogynist, or at least not many. Also, how is "My problems with Oda's women", and different than "What do you think about the portrayal of women in One Piece?"? Notice the word THINK in the title. This isn't a thread where there is one right answer, and that's not a bad thing. ANd people don't have issues with the portrayal of men in One Piece because that has been far more versatile and broad than the portrayal of women, so most don't see a problem. BUt if you do, feel free to start a thread about it
The point is that there's no unique vision of THE WOMAN.
We have lots of different female characters with distinctive personality and often female characters are meant to be humorous and relies on real life sides of women personality, just like it happens for some men in the manga.
And we have loads of interactions between male characters and female characters.
Many different ways, from Sanji's to Luffy going through Chopper.
I can't really wrap my head in listening people saying there are problems about how women are portrayed.
Women that in a real life world parallel to the ucronic time setting of the manga, would be treated much much worse.
During the real life pirate era there weren't women in the marine,
For a Sanji being a womanizer, we have a friendly Usopp and a Luffy that doesn't care if you're man or woman but only if you're doing it wrong.
This is not about how women are portrayed, this is about relations between characters, that you might like or not, but you must ask yourself first and foremost if they make the character distinctive and functional to the story.
It's an "I like this/I don't like that" point, not about Oda, you're shifting your problem onto Oda's shoulders/way of mind, and that's what I found hypocrite.
Many don't like Sanji's way.
FAIR.
Though that's what makes him a definite character, stupid if you want, but it's 90% of what Sanji is.
Don't like him, but don't say Oda has strange concepts about women because of Sanji's ways, because they don't certainly reflect Oda's thoughts.
Sanji's just a parody character of men that get manipulated by women, which, in reality, happens much more than you think, with loads of men willing to be manipulated.
So, I'll repeat what I said: the flaw is in the eye of the beholder.
It's you that want women in OnePiece to be different, it's not a character problem.
@Monkey:
Please cite a male issue in One Piece.
Don't see any, like I don't see women or animal issues.
I see characters and interactions that I like/don't like, which is MY problem, and I don't blame Oda because he doesn't align to my likings.
This is exactly what I'm talking about with this convenient amnesiac nihilism.
"Hey mannn, like…this isn't even about One Piece, you people are just like discussing YOUR thoughts on it!"
Close the forums everyone! No more discussing anything because it turns out it's not OP but our opinions.
It's a fair argument to discuss, when you accept the character/interaction and not blame Oda because you expect him to do things differently, or because he didn't met your expectations.
I'm not referring to you Monkey, but the majority of the mood of the discussion.
There are interesting takes and thoughts here, but some stuff is very stupid, and as I said, it's when the personal issues with character are put on Oda.
Yeah, you don't actually believe any of this is a problem do you.
I don't see any problem at all, like I didn't saw problems in how Oda dealt with racism in Fishmen Island, just to mention another thing Oda had problems with.
Also, sometimes people should remember that OP is a shonen and not a seinen.
What's the hypocrisy? Do you understand that word?
Yup, I find vile that some people around here complains about things they don't like giving the blame to the alleged an unproven Oda's stance about women.
As I already said it's fishy that people didn't open threads about what they think about men/animals, which are fair arguments.
But this lack, makes pretty clear that the OP and many (not everyone) who are writing here wanted to point the finger to Oda.
You can't deny that.
