Wow, that 6 minute AMV was amazing!
Began to tear up when the crew was attacked by Kuma.
Trying to convert my friend to One Piece

Crazy awesome amv. >_> does your friend take requests? lol
-
:) I'm sure he'll love the comments guys but please post the comments and questions on YouTube so I don't have to go back and forth telling him your comments. xD
-
well it's not quite suitable, because it's right in the middle of the episodes, but i suggest he/she watches episode 377. it's where kuma gets shishi sonson'ed by zoro for shittin' with the captain! :P after being the last one to be defeated zoro begs kuma to take his life instead of luffy's…... epic scene!!!

I know someone who has started watching Dragon Ball Z, and is only in the first dozen episodes or so of it, and likes it. I'm trying to get them into One Piece. Need some episode recommendations, stat. ;)
Edit: They've said they like the humor of some of the episodes, so this could help.

this may seem weird but i'm trying to make my mom watch one piece. she loves shows that are good and i really think one piece would be great for her. the only problem is how should i hook her in 36 year old mom? she watched a few episodes with my 3 year old brother and said that this isn't a kid's show it's pretty serious for a cartoon. mind you she only saw the 1st 10 episodes where she didn't really pay much attention cuz my lil brother was really watching.
I got my mom to watch One Piece all the way through. It's an awesome feeling, and I often tear up sometimes watching certain One Piece moments because I'm like "she experienced this awesomeness too!!" I just showed her the first episode and she just kind of liked it. She did fall asleep during some episodes, but that stopped at the Arlong Park arc.
Reactions I remember specifically:
Her eyes popping open when Nami stabbed her arm and Luffy declared that he'd save her.
Luffy destroying Crocodile through the roof with Gomu Gomu no Storm made her eyes pop open and cry.
Smoker telling the World Government to eat shit made her do a doubletake.
Bon Clay's first sacrifice and the crew's farewell to Vivi made her tear up.This is getting to be too long…
I kept telling her "this show just keeps getting better and better", and she always kind of never believed me. After the end of Skypeia when Luffy was beating the crap out of Enel, she shouted, "It gets better than this!?" while being all teary-eyed.
Water 7 from the point of Luffy vs Usopp to Franky telling Usopp about Klaubertermann all made her teary-eyed, so that was about 12 episodes worth of that.
Enies Lobby "I WANT TO LIVE!!!" made her really teary-eyed.
Going Merry's funeral made her cry buckets and she said "Are you trying to kill me with this stuff!?"
She was pretty much frozen from the awesomeness that was Sabaody Archipelago from the time Luffy punches the Celestial Dragon to when Rayleigh saves Caimie with Haki to the extremely epic battles with the Supernovas & StrawHats vs Sentoumaru, Kuma, Pacifistas and an Admiral.
Another moment of "This anime can still get better?" at episode 459 when it introduces the 5 Shichibukai at the war and the 100,000 soldiers, and shows all the Blues.
Cried heavily at one of the latest episodes (505) when Luffy said he still had his crew. That was a doozy to write. Anyway... just saying it is possible to get your mom to watch One Piece, and she'll probably react just like you did to a lot of the things, you'll be surprised.
-
I cannot be more jealous. xD You got your mom to watch all of One Piece! How long did it take her? I could never see my mom or dad sitting down and actually taking the time to watch it for me. They're so busy… It's the saddest thing. :cwy: And if they did, they'd forget everything anyway. xP

I honestly don't remember how I did it, but I definitely didn't force her. I do remember it took a bit of convincing. She started out watching 1 episode every day or two, and then she was the one who wanted to speed up once they arrived at the Grand Line. At Alabasta she was just hooked, and has been that way ever since. I am often very surprised at the little details she remembers in an expansive story like this.
If you really want to try, just try to watch a scene around her that proves this series is not what she thinks it is. Also helps if you can get "dat music" playing, the music in this series is awesome.
A little note though, my parents are not the typical parents. They're the ones who kinda got ME into anime, not the other way around. They bought me Sailor Moon boxsets as a kid, Ronin Warriors, etc.
It can be done, man, if you were so inclined to do that kind of thing. As long as you get them past the "point of no return" (usually the Arlong arc), then you should have them hook line and sinker. After all, I mean come on, what weekly series of most shows on television do you know of that deal with slavery – which the Arlong arc does? That already kind of breaks One Piece out of the mold of stuff they usually watch, and it's supposed to be a kid's manga (which I don't really believe anymore.)
oh and it took about 8 months I'm pretty sure. she started watching weekly at 464.

Wow, it's so cool that your mom was into it and wanted to pick up the pace. I would be surprised if mine remembered every detail too. I usually watch One Piece with headphones on my laptop in my room. xD Plus, my parents aren't home a lot since they work (and my mom goes to school too x__x).
And your parents got you into anime? That's awesome! Yeah, my parents are not like that at all. -__- It's all about work and getting things done and yadda yadda. They wouldn't have time to sit down and watch "some cartoon" (omg One Piece forgive me please. x__x)
Yeah, I always said if she's watching any one arc it has to be that one since it deals with a mother and her daughters. But, I want her to catch the whole story too. And I feel like my dad would love One Piece even more… He's into action and things dealing with the government (Water 7 Arc x3). He's a detective lol.
I played One Piece music out loud before and I just got "What's up with that music, Elise?" They must've thought I was in some deep mood or something. And "Three Towers" is both my ringtone AND alarm! xDD But anyway, that's really cool and maybe it'll work. Thanks! :)

show him when Arlong killed bermelle-chan ..

I watched OP from time to time as a kid, which was the 4kids version, and liked it. After Bleach recently got me interested in Anime I decided that I would like to give the original version of One Piece a try.
I have to admit, I thought it was good, but just that, until Hawkeye appeared at baratie, at which point I realised that this program would definatly surprise me, as it sure did there (I believed Hawkeye would only appear extremely late into the series, since he was Zoro's ultimate goal) And then every arc I watched got better and better, after Arabasta I realised that I valued One Piece as the best series of any kind I have ever watched.
But choosing an entry point for people completely new to anime is difficult, of course the best thing to do is start them off at episode 1 and let the show do the rest, but some may not like it until Arlong or maybe even later, so convincing them immediatly that it will be worth their time is difficult.
I got into Bleach by watching AMV's, however I see that almost all One piece AMV's are just the fights with flashing colours and pop music added - no thought put into timing, meaning or respect to the orginal work at all. So I don't recommend those.
So ideally you'd want an episode early into the series which shows something which will appeal specifically to the person's interests but attempting to avoid spoilers if possible. Although the OP has likely resolved this issue by now, I would suggest thinking of what aspect of One Piece would appeal to them most and show them parts which are relevant.
As for suitable films, I'd actually vote Movie 4 alongside 9 or 10, as it also does a brilliant job of establishing the characters and atmosphere of the series. For instance, the barfight which introduces Luffy's rubber ability, Zoro's sword style and the cowardice of Chopper and Usopp, it can aslo involve smaller things, like when they are eating at the start and Zoro is talking whilst bones are constantly being bounced of his head, bringing up the apropriate term "Bonehead". It also managed to put across the theme of taking humorous or odd powers and making them dangerous, as with the candy power.
I also didn't really like the pacing at the start of 9, I thought it was too quick and kind of just said "here's all the characters, yeah they're each very unique but one of them has an illness and needs a doctor, no time to develop anyone at the moment" and would also serve mainly to confuse people who get to the Chopper arc in the series, it may even cause some people to skip it altogether.
And as for 10, While it is the best written (by Oda himself of course) I don't believe it's the best entry point, for new people it doesn't seem to give much of a reason to care about their objective, since Nami could easily be viewed as nothing but one of their pretty crew members.
Those are just my thoughts.

My friend has always refused to watch One Piece because he sees it as a 'kiddy anime with weird looking characters' and 'it's got too many episodes'.
He sounds like a lost cause to be honest, if he isn't willing to stick by it from the get go. I don't like the idea of showing someone an anime 100 episodes in just to see some "cool bits", when it's completely out of context, and they don't know the situation or the characters or the back story… and OP isn't the kind of story to watch on that shallow level of "just show me some cool fight scenes!"
My friend has always bagged OP for being a 'kiddy anime' simply because of the 4Kids dub, and when I finally convinced him to give the Japanese version a chance, he'd troll me by playing the 4Kids opening theme over and over on his laptop. :getlost:
Maybe show him the beginning of an arc such as Baratie (the arc that got me hooked.) Because it's the "start" of a new adventure he won't feel like he has no idea what's happening.

Wow a lot of you got your mom to watch this show. That's great! the more people that see it the better. I have only seen season 1 of One piece dubbed and it is one of my favorite shows period. I adore the show. I have all the voyages but didn't watch season 2 and 3 yet becuz i'm waiting for season 4 to get announced. I don't like ending on cliffhangers that is why. So I ended at season 1 and that was a cliffhanger but oh well. I hope this show doesn't dissappointment in season 2 and 3 and onwards when it gets dubbed. I really wanna see all 1000 episodes if there will really be that many or not. I hope so.

You know given the nature of "One Piece" that doesn't make much sense.
Anyway this is for the manga but it's about getting someone into "One Piece". Both my parents read the first 12 pages and they hated it, they didn't understand how it could be so popular with adults in Japan. I even said to my dad, "You liked Peter Pan, that's such a similar story type".
-
You should of had them watch the anime instead…

What difference would that make?

i'm telling you a lot

I myself got hooked on this show when I heard that Chris Sabat was dubbing that awesome 3 sword wielding dude I remembered from an awfully dubbed show in my country called "Drake" (no comments)!
Some weeks later a friend of mine came to my house while i was watching a rerun of the Baratie Saga, specifically when Mihawk enters the stage! He got excited with the character's intro, thrilled with the fight, goosebumps with the challenge and teary with the vow! He got addicted to the show and has episode No24 as a shortcut on his desktop (he has seen it 20+ times).
I think that this episode is a prime example of the way One Piece is introducing the strongest, most feared characters of its universe so casually, when the protagonists have absolutely no way of matching them, just to satisfy our greedy eyes :-) (contrary to Dragonball where the world's strongest guy just happens to pop out when the previous world's strongest guy bit the dust).
This episode is relatively spoiler-free, builds up a great deal of admiration and respect for one of the protagonists and has one of the greatest emotional scenes of the show (plus blood and bad language for anyone who thinks it's just for kids)! -
@Lil:
i'm telling you a lot
Explain please. Have you read the manga? I thought all you've been exposed to is season 1 as dubbed by FUNimation.
-
Episode 4 to be honest, the Luffy flashback is amazing I got a few people hooked with that, otherwise Blackbeard vs Ace most likely.
-
best episode? The start of the series i couldn't leave my pc…1 to 15 should be enough to convince sb to watch it...you could say watch these first and the you decide if you wanna continue...It wouldn't be wise to show sb the latest episodes cause its the character's development that you like about one piece...They develop through fights so if you skip the fights i would say that it would be good to hook sb :P LOL ditihala Drake that sucked good think ALTER stopped showing this... :P ( Greek words: Ela re patrida...telika padou iparxei enas Ellinas :P ).!!
-
Episode 397 - 398 with that epic Punch by Luffy and Silver Rayleighs Haki.
One of my favourites anyway.
My first episode I watched to get into One piece was 474.
-
I liked Dragon's introduction and Mihawk vs. Zoro. Zoro vs. Mister One was pretty good too. And of course Bellemere's death.
-
I think a pair of good episodes for getting someone hooked to one piece are when zoro makes a pledge to Kuina to become the world's greatest swordman, along to the episode when Mihawk defeats Zoro, those episodes are very touching and emotional, and makes you want to see the rest of the series to see how Zoro is going to fulfill his pledge.
-
I want to get my brother into this series because I think he would really like it once he gets passed how over the top things can be. He's never really watched a shonen anime and has really only seen Death Note and Hell Girl. But I remember him catching a few episodes of DBZ with me back on Toonami and he seemed to enjoy what he saw of it. I worry though because he will give up on a show at episode 1, and when I first saw the first episode of one piece, I didn't really like it, but if I hear a show is good I will give it a few episodes before deciding whether to continue watching it or not. I didn't know anything about One Piece before turning on the episode so I had no context for anything. Lol I thought Coby was going to be the main character.
I have thought about starting with episode 4. But I would just want to show him the Luffy flashback. Either that or give him a huge explanation of the series. I think he would really like the Arlong Arc. I also want to wait until Funimation gets the ok to dub more episodes because my brother isn't really an anime fan and will not watch it subtitled.
-
I made a deal with my friend to watch/read through Arlong Park. Little did I know Nami stabbing herself and Luffy promising to help her even though he had nothing to gain would make me LOVE THE SERIES FOREVER.
We eventually made the same deal with a third friend. The same thing happened to him in exactly the same place.
-
Water 7/Enies Lobby is what got me hooked. I had seen/read various parts of the beginning of the series over the years, but didn't have a great interest. Well, until I saw Dub Piece. I died laughing and that made me want to watch the show again, and I got hooked. I always tell people if the get overwhelmed with reading all of it to start there after going through the beginning, though now after reading it all it's hard to recommend that anymore, there's so much good stuff in this series. Though I prefer to read then watch, I will always love watching the CP9 arc, I never get tired of it.
-
Baratie Arc and Marineford arc. I watch the two arcs at the same time. Got easily hooked :))
-
Any fight from enies lobby is fantastic for anyone who is interested in one piece. If they are looking for more of the "non kiddish" side then show a clip from zoro vs kuma when zoro takes away luffy's pain, knocks out sanji, and almost dies. Or zoros fight with mr 1.
-
Lately I've been able to convince quite a few people with these two fan-made videos:
Even though they give the Ace getting executed thing away, especially the second one but still managed to convince quite a few people with these two videos, like mentioned above.
-
I'm going to get my cousin into One Piece (I gave her the first 10 volumes (Danish though, bleh) and she liked it but isn't per say hooked) and I was thinking about taking it from episode 229 and up (she doesn't do reading). If someone get's hooked from this episode it is followed by the most awesome arc. Imo. So that's cool. :D
However if it's just going to be one episode I would say the one with the walk to AP, or a really funny one. Like when we first meet Ace in Alabasta.
But the one with Nami… It's so good, but personally I just don't like it when it's taken from the middle (or ending) of an arc (been there done that and the experience is totally different). If the person get's hooked from there he/she would want to see it from there and would miss out on a lot that makes the situations so intense. So all in all just episodes around the beginning of the arcs. And then it's just about picking a good one (I'll go check which ones are good). :POI! NO! The Arlong Walk is a BAD IDEA! Argh, I showed it to a friend and she ended up hating Nami and _laughe_d. Nonononono! Seriously, too emotional episodes is not the way forward! Funny is good, serious is not. Take it from episode 1.
-
Episode 1 and try to get him to continue from there. If someone starts from some random episode, no matter how much it proves their initial hypothesis of it being a stupid anime wrong, it still counts for naught when the whole time they're watching they're just thinking "What's going on here?" because they have no knowledge of the back story. I know this from personal experience because I remember when my friend was trying to get me to read the One Piece manga a couple years back and he just shoved Volume WhoKnowsWhat into my face, I was confused and thought it was dumb. But then when I started from the beginning, I was hooked by the end of the first chapter and One Piece is now my absolute favorite manga/ anime.
-
Well,I know what NOT to show them:anything from Marineford and Ennis Lobby!
Cause noobs will be all like 'OMG,that's so cool fighting!! Yeeah, non stop action and cool fighting!!!' which is not what one piece is all about, abd they'll be watching it fir the wrong reason.
