Not so sure about the age range about this site, but I'm in high school.Anyways what I wanted to discuss in this thread is mainly on 'Why are grades so important?' I know it may seem like such a silly question, but so far the only reason I can think of is to get a high paying job, so they can live high and mighty. :wassat:
My high school days aren't going to last forever, but why risk it all by going to study for 25 hours of the day (harharhar)? I do care slightly about grades but, what about you guys?

      Discuss😁

The only importance they'll hold for you after HS is when it comes to the colleges you're applying to.

You'd want high grades to get scholarships and if they're not available or important in your country then you'd want high grades to get a job… period. It wouldn't even be a matter of, "Dur... Grades are just for the BEST jobs", it would be a matter of, "Shit, I NEED high grades to get a job."

          Everything else is bullshit.

For your high school grades, they're only really important for getting into college and I suppose for getting a job if you opt not to go to college. Of course, they usually don't care what grades you got in any specific subject, they only care about your GPA.

Also, if do you go to college, your high school grades henceforth don't mean jack (unless you drop out or something, I guess).

As a high school senior who has recently applied and got accepted to college, I have to say I regret not working as hard as I should have in getting the top grades. I only made it to the University of Michigan while many of my friends made it to even higher tier schools (Stanford, Yale, Berkeley, U Penn, Northwestern, etc). Yes, it's true, your grades mainly determine where you can go for college and not much else. If you honestly don't give much of a hoot about that, then don't worry about them too much and enjoy your high school experience. But where you go to college generally determines how successful you can be in your future endeavors, etc etc.

Just understand that if you really do fully apply yourself in high school, college, etc. (~10 years, maybe?), you can be handsomely rewarded in $$$ and happiness for the rest of your life.

I suppose you're in the US?

I'm in Belgium, and here it doesn't matter what kind of grades you get, anyone can enter any university or college at any time (with a few exceptions). So, as I realized after a few years, the grades we get in high school mean absolutely jack shit. The only thing that mattered is that you'd have more than 50% so you wouldn't have to do your year again. So what I'd do is completely slack off during the year, only doing stuff that was absolutely necessary, and two times a year (with Christmas and in June) we had to make exams, so then I'd study.

However. Studying through the year in order to keep up your grades is something I strongly encourage. I didn't do this, but I was lucky to be able to pull it off. The reason you study in high school is to get yourself familiar with the act of studying, processing several sources, knowing how to handle the subject matter, all that. These are things they teach you in high school (on meta level), and it's important you learn them then because later, when you roll into a university or college, they just drop all this learning material on you and you have to figure out by yourself how to process it and make succesful exams at the end of the year. So at that time it's really best to have some experience.

So, my advice to you, sit it out and make sure you study, but you don't exactly have to go A-hunting.

Here in the Philippines, highschool grades are very useful when applying to college especially when you want to go to State Universities where you will not pay as much as private ones. But personally, it doesn't mean a thing (unless you're an egotistic one). Maybe it does matter when your still in the early months of being a freshman but until then it really won't. In fact, highschool grades here were from 70% extra-curricular and 30% intelligence. That's why many students who gained honors from highschool were not that great anymore when they gone to college.

I, myself, was very lax when studying since my early education but never gone out of the star section of our school (they have class rankings here). But now in college, I'm having a really hard time getting high grades because I didn't practice good study habits from highschool. I'm still searching for a very very effective study habit which will prevent me from craming all the time.

I can clasify myself to be always in the upper mid-tier side of the class. Not the intelligent+studyhard type who always get almost perfect scores and seems like they don't have a life anymore, and also not the happy-go-lucky, carefree students who doesn't give a shit what happens to their academic career.

My advice is the same as Mrs.Iceburgs'.

High School Grades don't mean much 'xept if you want the money prizes and a scholarship. Personally, I might have had pretty good grades, better than most, but I rarely studied. I can't memorize shit to save my skin for one. I just paid attention to class, discussed with the professors and all in all made sure they knew my name and that I wasn't stupid. That way I always got good grades, learned what I wanted to learn and didn't waste much time with trying to memorize shit that I was going to forget after a couple of days.

Eh? Not really. There are many intelligent, university/college graduates unemployed all over the world. And many unintelligent, cold-hearted morons, who are rich and in positions of power. The world isn't all that fair. =P

you don't NEED to get good grades, but it does help. My Brother and I, for instance. I struggled in school. I needed a tutor to pass high school math. My brother is damn smart. I went to college and took a coarse that looked fun, cause there was nothing else I was really interested in, and I wasn't really good in school. My brother went to university, did good at that, and got an awesome job.

We're both about 30 now. He just sold his first house, and bought another house for him and his wife to start a family. His University degree got him a nice high paying job.

I'm working for minimum wage and rent a room. I'm not complaining where I am. I'm generally happy. Saving up for a house for me, at a slow steady pace. But wouldn't it be nice to have a job like my brother.

Also, my friend, who is in University now, had to travel and go to a school far away, cause none of the schools here would accept her cause of her high school grades. She struggled in school too.

If you wanna learn a trade though, you don't need to go to school for that, and they make good money. maybe you should look into something like that if your not good in school.

My high school grades sucked and right now, trying to get into a high-standing University is a pain because of them. πŸ˜• I could see them only mattering in very specific circumstances, though.

I have forgotten 90% of things I learned from High school/college, I got pretty decent grades but cant say they have had that much impact on my life. Unless you are aiming for academic career through universitys I cant say college is that necessary for your future.

I did jackshit in highschool. A whole lot of it was goofing the fuck off with my friends, and then going to Anime Club on Wednesday. I paid attention and did things in classes that interested me. Mostly in English classes with a teacher I loved to bits with a classmates that were so radically different from me and each other, it made the whole thing fun.

After saying fuck it, and getting my GED, I went on to get a job as a web developer for four years, and only after I was laid off, I finally said, "Welp, knowing and learning stuff might help me find a new job."

I think the only thing I really know for sure right now is that in any field of work - ANY field of work - you have to really love what you do.

And on the munny munny munny subject, money doesn't buy happiness, but it makes about half of your "adult" suffering easier when you have some.

I just got a big check from my financial aid, and my plans for it are: This is gonna pay off this, this, and maybe some of this.

But I'll still have this, that, the other thing, and oh, my, no way am I out of everything.

Having the money will just ease me out of paying off a few things.

America has quite a shitty system. If you want to get in the best colleges you have to be a straight A student and be like class president or member or leader of some stupid club. Where I come from there are only a handful of Universities but they are all high standard universities and everybody that finished high school gets a chance at it. The scholarships and student funding depends on their home situation but it basically like this, if you have enough money to send your kids to college you get nothing and if you need assistance you will get it.
Seems to be a much better system if you ask me.
Anyway, I was a straight A student all throughout high school and college so it has no effect on me what so ever.

Remember, remember, the 5th of November

It's a pretty shitty system actually. Because I'm still 23, the college and financial people still consider me as a dependent of my parents - unless are you married? oh, you're not? still a dependant - instead of a functioning adult that's had a job since I've been out of highschool. It won't change until I turn 24 in July.

                                                        That's only one problem.

If school/college prepares you for anything, it prepares you to do the tedious bullshit, constant stress, and the feeling of endless work when you get an actual job.

No. Studying does not prepare you for the work world, but getting used to actually doing your fucking job will prepare you for the work world.

Success has no bearing on school performance. Success is a matter of hard work, knowing the right people, and/or luck. Especially luck.

They don't even always have that value. Having good grades doesn't mean you'll get a scholarship and you can get a scholarship with bad grades. It's not like I was a terrible student, but I ended up with a large scholarship to a great school that I thoroughly enjoy despite only rarely getting anything above a B. My only skill was genuine interest in my path (engineering) and standing out as a person, which are really much more important in a career than book smarts.

We don't really have scholarships in Cyprus or Greece since studying at a University is free ('xept if it's a private one) and we get accepted by Universities by our exams' grades. There's only one University like that in Cyprus but with several departments (I got in Political Sciences there and said 'Screw that! I wanted Archeology!!' which was like.. 0.01 points more than P.S) and plenty of private Universities (colleges) where you pick exactly what you are gonna study and you pay for it. Then you have the option to send an application with 40 Universities in Greece and if you get picked by one there, you study for free again. o/

I do know Champa, it used to be the south of modern day Vietnam primarily! The Vietnamese conquered them over several centuries and assimilated their former territories. The Cham people still exist today albeit in very small numbers, stateless…

In fact I'd been wanting to ask you if what you knew about them from actual life experience, like if you knew any, or have seen how they make it in modern day Vietnam and stuff.

Chenla was the pre Khmer Empire, Khmer state. Old form of today's Cambodia.
