999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors for the NDS

999 is a Novel video game in a similar vein to the Phoenix Wright series and its spin-offs.
It is developed by ChunSoft and published in US by AKSYS.

Story-
Junpei, a normal college student, suddenly finds himself along with eight other strangers involved in a deadly conspiracy he could never have imagined. He wakes aboard an old cruise liner. Dazed and confused, he stumbles around the room he finds himself in, trying desperately to remember how he got there. The first thing he notices is a number, scrawled across the door… A bright red number 5. As Junpei’s memory returns, his mind is filled with the image of a mysterious figure in a gas mask, and their haunting words: “You are going to participate in a game. The Nonary Game. It is a game…where you will put your life on the line.”

One thing to note is that the character designs are by Kinu Nishimura, who did the Capcom groove character art in the Capcom vs. SNK games.

one of the best ds games in a long time and the only one I managed to finish in a long time, however I only finished one ending the so called "safe ending" if anyone would mind it could be an idea to re-write the story in this thread for people like me who have not finished the whole game but want to know the story.

its just time consuming to repeat the game a total of 6 times, when the story is its best componet, I would love to watch it as a movie or an animation or even a manga.

over all great game 9/10 (just cbf completing the game another 5 times)

Well after getting the "Safe Ending" you can get the "True Ending", but it really takes a long time (even using the skip text thing, since there'll be a lot of new things that can't be skipped).
If this thread came a week ago I could easily tell the story, but now… :sad:

Well you can really quickly skip much of the dialog by just holding Right. Heck the scene when the 9 of them meet for the first time can be skipped within a minute if you hold Right, lol.
I take it you'd want the true ending posted here? I could put it in in a spoiler tag, but it is something you just have to see it on your own, I would suggest using the link to GameFAQs I posted as it helped to find the other endings.
The ending is still worth watching though partially because of one of the most epic puzzles I've had to solve in a game ;.;

I'm adoring this so far.

I honestly was interested in the first place because I had never heard of it, randomly checked some game sites, saw it got a 10/10 on Destructoid, took a double take because I'd still never seen the name, read its review

and just got insanely interested.

Finally! I've been waiting for a thread on this game to show up for a while. This is honestly the best game I've played in the past few years. I'd go on ranting about why it's so amazing, but just go watch any reviews and you'll get the picture. Once you start playing this game, you won't stop until you've collected all of the endings. It's just that amazing.

It's a little hard to find, but trust me, it's worth it. This game deserves so much praise, and it's unfortunate that almost no one knows about it. I really wish there was at least some advertising of some kind done. In fact, the only reason I knew about it was because I saw a post about it in some random forum. I bought it the next day, and that was the best decision I've made in a long time. Just go get it; you won't regret it.

Also, Tizoc, I don't know whether you should put that spoiler there. While it doesn't ruin the game, it's best not to tempt people to spoil themselves.

Edit: I can recount the story perfectly for you if you want. I've read pretty much everything there is to know about online after playing it.

I have not played any of those, but everywhere I've read (including the Gamespot forums for 999, which is the best place I've found to discuss the game) has talked about Ever17 specifically. It sounds awesome, so hopefully it's just as good as this game (although that would be really hard to do).

Also, for anyone interested in 999, be warned that this game is M, and it well deserves that rating. There is no intense gore, but there are some sexual implications, strong language, and dark themes. After one particular ending, I was scared to walk around my house at night because I thought I'd be, well, I don't want to spoil anything.

My favourite character was Ace because he was the only one that seemed to be good at first, then I got the "Safe Ending"… :ninja:
And now my favourite is Snake, just because he was awesome at the "Safe Ending".

I played ever17 (same writer). The story is complex with time-travel,paradox, 4th dimension etc.

I'm almost to getting the first ending (baddest ending) to work my way onwards. Most Japanese players said doing it in baddest-to-best order not only made the most sense, but made it the most complete experience. I think the English community is finally getting guides and stuff out so that's good too. I got a spoiler free walk-through to check occasionally, only to see if I was on path for the route. Apparently, after the first ending, the rest falls into place, if what I heard can be believed.

I noticed it's written by the Ever 17 writer and it makes perfect sense. If my theory is correct on what's going on (super minor spoiler)

I made a topic in Other Anime/Manga dedicated to VNs, since I've become very agitated with how anime and manga have been going over the past year or so.

I have all the links you need, Freeman, so just send a PM. And although Ever17 is very near and dear to my heart, I highly encourage you to play Remember11 first because that novel takes place from 11 January 2011 - 17 January 2011, which is only in a matter of weeks. If you play the novel during the exact days the game takes place, it'll amplify the experience. I did it with Chaos;Head and it turned a mediocre novel into an LCD trip.

I actually own Hirameki's Ever17 DVD, something unprecedented for a surly pirate like me. But I don't feel bad in pirating the novels since both Hirameki and KID are long gone.

While that is doable, I would recommend just waiting and playing it as you can. It's not nearly as simple as just replaying the game and getting a different ending.

! Your replaying the game actually factors into it as a plot point. This is what I have been told, with nothing more. I don't personally know how it works, but that's what they say..

So it's not so much as just getting the different endings. The plot itself evolves beyond them too. The endings wouldn't just give you answers, each playthrough also adds in a lot more developments and plot points which build off of each other, eventually ending in complete and full answers. As in, if you've only played one playthrough, it isn't as simple as just saying "that did that and that's the answer". You'd be getting answers to stuff you haven't even gotten the questions to, yet.

But, as long as you understand that, you're free to go about looking up spoilers, since obviously it's not my place to tell you what you can, or can't, do.

I just want to say though that there is a whole lot of content you're missing out on.

A friend of mine loved Sengoku Rance but got himself addicted to AliceSoft Wiki (which I contributed to) despite my warnings, and it really hurt the impact of the IF Routes. As in, he didn't play them. -_-

If you really want to spoil most of the story for yourself, just go to the Wikipedia page and read the plot. I actually wrote most of it, but I didn't have that much time to polish it (and I also didn't know how much you're supposed to go into detail on Wikipedia). That being said, I highly suggest you do not, as the game is so much better when you just play it in learn on your own (although you said you already spoiled yourself, which in that case, it's not as bad).

@Holy: I'm not sure what you mean by "baddest-to-worst", since that doesn't make sense. I think what you are trying to say is worst to best. Indeed, there is an order that I personally feel is best:

! Axe -> Sub -> Knife -> Safe -> True
! That way, you don't learn about Snake or the second [9] door for as long as possible.
Getting Ending 4 first just feels wrong to me. You learn way too much on your first run when you really shouldn't for a while.

Actually, the order I posted was the order I got the endings in, but in retrospect, I really think it is the best order.

You do seem to have some grip on the situation though. I remember when I finished first with that ending. I had a lot of questions, such as:

! -Who killed Snake and why?
-What did the 9th Man mean when he said "He lied to me."?
-Did they really find Door [9]?
-What did the clover Santa gave me represent (assuming you went through Door [4])?
-What's the deal with Seven's amnesia?
-What did Ace want to show Lotus?
-And finally, how do I get Clover to not murder everyone?
Yeah, I had a lot of questions. Made me real excited to get the next ending.

My DS is charging right now, so I may as well throw out my wacky thoughts as of right now, obviously using information one has when they only have about 1/5th completed. I am as of my second playthrough (just got to

! the hospital again after taking 5 instead of 4)

! I don't know if there is one sole person running this. I do know Ace is the most suspicious though and, if there is one person who I think murdered anybody, it is him. But I don't know why he would be doing anything. Here is what makes him suspicious to me though on my Axe playthrough:
! -The scene where he takes the anesthetics and passes out while we run off leaves him with plenty of times to do suspicious stuff. If I remember the order of events right, I believe he was the one who killed Snake in that scenario. Not that I know where he could've kept Snake, or if it was even as simple as him just keeping him somewhere. I'm guessing he faked taking the anesthetics and a lot happened in between our time.
! -His behaviour in Room 1/that Captain area was just very observant and a little One-Uppy, as if he had more of a grasp on what was happening than we did. As far as I know, when he ran off at one point on his own before returning some stuff to me, he killed the "fake"/real(?) Zero and then came back. But that's kind of really active and running around a lot. It … seems feasible though. I wouldn't bank anything on this.
! Here are my big questions that I can't wait to find out:
! - Seven's behaviour. Like his amnesia and how he tried propping the door up in area 5. There was a safe I hadn't opened at the time, so I think something important was involved with it.
! - Who is Snake really? If Ace is suspicious, Snake is ... uh... twice as suspicious.
! - Who is Nine? He was not unceremoniously killed off so early on for no reason. I'm sure he, like Snake and Ace probably, knew (or rather, thought he knew) more than everyone else at the beginning. After all, "he lied to me." Which he? Did Ace lie to him? If there is any single mastermind, it is either Ace and Snake. Maybe one of them is against the other. Maybe they're working together?
! - Why was everyone brought together>? Lotus is a mother, knows computers... Santa is a... ... guy... What does everyone have in common?
! - WHO WAS THAT OLD CAPTAIN ZERO?!
! And here is a thought based solely on the fact that they wouldn't give you information if they didn't plan to use it:
! - What does that "telepathic field" have to do with what's going on? If I understand what I think I understand, does this mean the playthroughs are actually being communicated across each other? Is reality being repeated? Are there multiple dimensions? IS IT TIME TRAVEL OF SOME KIND?!

Best. Game. I can't wait to keep going.

I'll entertain some of your current thoughts (I'll try my hardest not to spoil):

! -Interesting thoughts about Ace. I had never really thought about the whole drug thing that way. And he did seem suspicious in Door 1, didn't he?
! -Seven's strange, but I honestly think he kept the door open just in case. He does it with all the doors he goes through.
! -Snake never seemed suspicious to me. I guess the whole blind thing, but I dunno.
! -Hehe, indeed, what does everyone have in common?
! Overall, you actually have a good understanding of what is going on. It's surprising actually, as I had no clue after my first run. It only gets better from here as you start learning some answers.

Haha, here is actually why I think that…

! Maybe Snake isn't as suspicious as Ace in terms of given information, now that I think about it. I guess I kind of overstated since he is the one I'm most curious about and the singling of him out to be murdered just makes me wonder what he could tie into. So I guess it's more like everything surrounding Snake seems special. Like, while I understand how it is justified that he was given a brail note explaining things, I am definitely sure that he had that note for reasons beyond just a simple handicap to balance the game. But… something about him being singled out to be murdered.
! Above I stated that Ace's "Passed Out" scene left plenty of time for stuff to happen. If Ace didn't simply kidnap and hide Snake, why was he gone? Was he observing, solving something..? I have no reason to suspect anything about Snake is really malicious or bad in intent... But some stuff surrounding him makes me wonder, just who is he?

Discussing this as I play it is honestly really fun. I'm logging off now to play this in bed and eventually sleep, but I'm gonna hopefully get #2 wrapped off and find out more.

! I can also see where your thoughts about Ace and that time period are coming from. I did find it suspicious that he just so happened to be awake the moment we returned from Doors 7 and 8. Then again, it's hard to fake injecting drugs into you. Hmmm…

lol i see everyone wants me to replay the game its too bad that I already read spoilers last wee(yes i finished the game a while ago and went to game faq to find out the other endings) but i never got the full depth of the plot and atm i cbf replaying the game however I understand and take into consideration that you should replay the game at least 4 times to get the bulk of the story! its too bad most of the story is spoiled for me…

! How did June/Akane survived the incenerator if Junpei didn't saved her yet through the morphological field? I remember something about how 2 different futures could be connected, that would explain her fevers, and how Junpei knewn about things that happened on the "safe ending", still it's something that I don't get. Maybe I didn't get it because I was really tired when I finished the game.
If I'm wrong, I would like too to be corrected.
And I saw a video of a guy that ordered a watch like as the game one, but of course, it has a real watch functions.

In order to insure that Junpei actually was there to help Akane escape in the past, Akane (June) and Aoi (Santa) set up the Second Nonary Game so that Junpei could be in the exact position to help Akane in the past when the time came that she needed his help. It's not so much a time paradox as it is a time loop. Why did Akane survive? Because Junpei saved her. Why did Junpei save her? Because she survived. Strange, I know, but it's what happened.
! I know what you're thinking. "Seven and Santa said that Akane died nine years ago!" Well, first, it's obvious that Santa is lying, since he's part of the plan. With Seven, however, it's a bit more complicated. If you've done the Safe Ending, recall how Lotus discusses the whole monitor detached from the source. It's possible that Akane, using her psychic powers (they never call it this, but they are), controlled what Seven remembered. Either that, or he was just lying too
! Edit: I also forgot to mention that Snake says that Akane dies too. That's kind of strange actually, and I don't have any truly viable way to explain it. I suppose he could have been in on the plan too, but I doubt it. I think it's just one of the very few holes the game has.
! As far as how she knew the Safe Ending, that's actually explained in-game. Imagine a river that forks into two rivers. One of the rivers doesn't know what happens on the other river. However, Akane can see both rivers. By seeing these alternate time lines, she is able to use information gained from them to help Junpei get to the incinerator to help her. If you still don't get it, just ask me and I'll try to clarify.

The soundtrack is pretty great too. I don't really like all of the music that has the word "Game" in it, but the Main Theme, Morphogenetic Sorrow, Eternitybox, Quietus, Extreme Extrication, Riddle and Puzzle, Recollection, Chill and Rigor, 9 Years, and Digital Root are all great tracks. In particular, Eternitybox gives me shivers every time I hear it, mostly because of the twist it plays with in-game:

! The only problem with that is that you see Snake in the picture where Aoi is hugging Akane right after she escapes. It's kind of hard to be right there and not realize that she survived. Maybe his senses weren't as honed as a child or something. (I still think it's a plot hole, as much as I hate to say it :).

My favorite character… I dunno, it's such a hard choice. I like all of the characters, although I think the females aren't as well developed (except maybe Clover... maybe). In the official character poll, I voted for Seven, because he's awesome, but I had to choose between him, Ace, and Snake. I voted for him because I knew no one else would, and he deserves votes! Still, it's between those three for me.

My Japanese is pathetic, so yes, they're all English translated. Don't play R11 for a few weeks though, definitely wait until 11 January to start it. I played the first route (Kokoro's) in October, and am holding off Satoru's until January.

Haha, that's exactly how I felt after that ending.

! I won't tell you who it is, but I will tell you that the game never tells you explicitly who it is. By the time you finish the Safe End, however, you'll probably have a pretty good idea of who it was. You'll also be able to piece together the purpose of the submarine, although it's never really stated.
! I think that's why I like Seven so much. At first he just seems like a brute, but then when you get to know who he is, he's actually a really cool and brave guy.
! It's a damn shame, but this ending isn't mandatory for getting the true ending. The reason I say it's a shame is that Lotus gets so much development in this ending, but barely any in all the others.
! I'm guessing you went through Door 3? Indeed, Snake was dead before Ace used the drugs. Who then could have killed him, I wonder?

That's one of the many things I love about this game. You go through, you think you have all the answers, and then you do the next ending and realize that you barely knew anything in the last playthrough.

And as far as the KID licenses go, it's unlikely because VNs don't usually come to the US. They're a niche product, with high investment cost and marginal return. Hirameki went out of business because their work was too easily pirated, and the cost of translating something as massive as a VN convinced them they couldn't make long term profit from their work.

I was actually the one who emailed Hirameki and told them about people spamming their forum with Daemon Tools/Isohunt links. The spam had gone on for months and nothing was done, and I felt so moved by the company I told them about it despite my pro-piracy stance. It really did break my heart that they went OOB because unlike JAST USA they were legitimately committed to bringing over good works, not porn or stealing online translations.

I don't think (hope?) 999 will become a huge seller, but I'll be glad if it gains some wider appreciation and awareness for VNs. Not a TON, just enough to make a decently sized round table for discussion. At least, larger than three or so people.

So far I'm loving it because

! Clover and Seven are with me in the Operating Room. The whole "balls" exchange keeps cracking me up and in general they're both just fun to be around.

Three done, two to go, and then the big finale.

! Yeah, when I got that ending I was like "What just happened?!" You'll figure out who it was that killed you there. (Hint: It's the same person that kills you in the Sub Ending XP)
! I forgot whether Santa tells the story about the Evil Santa in the Knife Ending. It's kind of funny.
! That altar creeped me out so much. Unfortunately for you, the Coffin End doesn't actually let you open the coffin, but you'll probably have a good idea of what is in there by the time you finish it.
! Seven is hilarious. I love him a lot. "Junpei, watch out, there's some dihydrogen monoxide in here!" Clover's fun too when she's not "axe crazy".

Be prepared for some long endings. The last two add on several hours to each playthrough (But of course it's all worth it since they're amazing).

! Yeah, I have beaten every playthrough late at night in bed so far and it usually results in legitimate chills and thrills and getting creeped out.
! The altar was just crazy. Junpei remarking how … "off" the room feels as everyone slowly walks out.
! And then it starts violently shaking. Oh man.

Maybe his senses weren't as honed as a child or something. (I still think it's a plot hole, as much as I hate to say it :).

Holy, don't look at these btw

! The problem with that is the fact that Akane never died in the first place. She contacted Junpei and was able to escape alive. As I said before, it's a time loop.
! Now, I don't remember where exactly Snake says that Akane died. If he says it during a bad ending, then in that specific timeline Akane died, so he'd be right. I'll have to check to see if he says she dies in the True End.

Have you played Phoenix Wright before, or are you just replaying through? (Ace Attorney is probably my favorite game series, at least before this game came out :P)

This game is cruel, but oh so much fun.

Haha, if you think the game is great already, you're in for one hell of a ride. You're just on the tip of the iceburg. (Make sure that you check around the whole room though. You'll get it eventually :D)

@MANUELF: Don't be afraid to share your feelings and questions at this point. A lot of fun can come from discussing what you do and don't know throughout the game. Holy said as much, and I agree completely.

@Night: I've already said as much, but it's a tie between Seven, Snake, and Ace (although Ace is on the lower end of the tie).
