One of the greatest games ever is back.
Deux Ex: Human Revolution

I'm going to remain skeptical until I can actually play it for myself, but I have to admit it's all looking REALLY REALLY good.
The problem is that Invisible War looked pretty good as well, and it wasn't until you saw how cramped and simplistic the environments were that it dawned on you how much worse of a game it was.
-
I played the tutorial of the original Deus Ex, though it didn't really seem like my type of game. I'll probably get around to playing it eventually. I didn't really like Invisible War, though I've heard that Deus Ex fans didn't like it either.
This game does look cool, though.
-
Wake up Deus Ex fans!! Wake the FUCK up!
I'm sure some of you may have seen this by now. But here's some leaked footage of the game in beta status. (wrapped the vid in spoiler tags since it's an HOUR long).
!
As the title says, it's a whole hour of DE:HR. The beginning and the first mission. If yah wanna skip the opening story stuff, go to around the 20 minute mark for the first assignment.
This demonstration has got it all. Stealth, shooting, close quarters takedowns, and dialogue choice options (morality, etc..)
I'm impressed so far. The game looks really really promising to me. It's giving me the vibes I got from the first games, yet obviously very up to date. I enjoy exploring an nice sized environment, giving me more insight towards my ultimate objective. I cannot wait to get to some of the cities (reminds me a bit of Mass Effect 2 in some ways. Even though Deus was doing this back on the ps2).
In fact… I think if yah liked ME:2, then you should definitely check this one out. Part of why no one really talks about it is cause it's just not that popular.

It's popular among PC gamers the first game anyway.
-
Looks like Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect had a first-person baby. Not a bad thing at all.
-
whoop whoop awesome, this looks in my eyes like a better version of MassEffect 2 in every aspect (..well except character creation)
But if I were a security expert I wouldn't let a ventilation shaft directly bypass my big ass security door ^^.
On another note I fear this will be one of those games where I can't play the evil path.. I mean the non reasonable.
-
I like the setting of the game. It's like Perfect Dark without the aliens, and Ghost in the Shell. I'm not digging the whole genetic altering abilities thing though. It's a device that seems a far bit overused. The main character talks and seems a bit bland, but maybe he'll grow on me if I play it. That controlled scene with the hostage looked very engaging. Another small gripe is the liners used by enemies. They seem very stereotypical and overly recycled. That and the AI seems questionable(the sniper scene for example… shouldn't they like... panic and look for cover?)
-
This is a bit more complex than Perfect Dark, really. The original is still considered one of the best games ever, or, at least one of the best FPS ever. Not saying that means this will be as good, though, but it's something to think about. I can't truly speak for the game since I don't know much about it and am only going by various opinions and reviews I've read.
-
I was more talking about the setting. Like the city, technolgy, the mood, ect. Perfect Dark was really simplistic, even though the written summaries were good stuff. That, and I never heard of this series though. I'd probably give it a go so I can have a better idea.
-
The original Deus Ex was the SHIT.
Seriosuly, I fucking loved that game.
-
I need to beat the first one first. This game looks cool though.
-
I downloaded the first one yesterday. I just need to get adjusted to the controls… The default ones are kinda bad in conjunction with the mouse.
-
Just pre-ordered this game for my brother's birthday. I bought Invisible War when that came and quite liked it so I thought I should get this one, looks really good so far anyway.
-
TiME TO DIG INTO THIS MOTHERFUCKER
-
Comes out over here in 3 days, can't wait!
-
My game journalist buddy has had this for a few weeks now and I had a go just after he got it. Seemed pretty damn cool. Much better than I thought it would be since I really wasnt into the first two.
With any luck he'll bring it up tomorrow and I'll play through the entire thing.
-
I've heard really good things about it. I'm excited.
-
Bah. Mine arrives on the 27th.
-
Oh my jegus this is a really good game so far. It won't recreate the phenomenon that was Deus Ex in 2000, but it's as close a reproduction of that game's style as you'll get in 2011. Tons of augs to choose from, awesome hacking minigame, HUGE levels (I swear the first mission was like 3 times longer than Liberty Island and the Detroit Hub is unspeakably massive for a "shooter" map) and just as much hidden/flavor text, news, books as in the original. The only drawbacks I've seen so far are the weak voice acting and facial animation, but I guess that's nothing new to Deus Ex…
-
I should be playing this right NOW. I just bought this!! What the fuck am I doing on the park!?!
goes
-
Yeah this game is getting excellent reviews.
-
Hey Gekko, did you kidnap any OnLive vouchers?
For those who dunno what I'm talking about the PC copy of Deus Ex: HR came with a voucher to download and play the game for free on OnLive, GameStop employees were instructed to remove these vouchers from all PC copies of the game and discard them. Needless to say shit hit the fan and now GameStop has (if what I read is right) removed the game from the shelves entirely.
-
Yeah I heard about that. It's ridiculous. Gamestop shouldn't be able to tamper with the games like that. And even if you can somehow explain it like "Well they shouldn't have been given the boxes with their competitor's coupon in it" (which I think is bullshit) I read a really good post by someone saying something along the lines of "They opened the package and are still selling it new. Try going in to Gamestop and selling a nonsealed package as new". Whatever way you think about it it's blatantly wrong and Gamestop should get some kind of punishment for it.
-
Does anyone know if the game's released in the UK today? 'Cos it just arrived, if it is out today then that's fine. Just thought I might have gotten it early.
-
Why shouldn't they be allowed to dictate what they sell in their store Sakon? Gamestop pays for and sells the games. It's a business, simple as that. Square Enix made this statement:
"As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon. GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies."
I'm seeing comments fly around now where gamers are saying some of the stupidest shit, getting all riled up over really nothing. I mean… when it comes down to it... gamestop cut their losses and pulled the game from their shelves (I pulled the only copy we received anyway, didn't even open it. I don't pocket stuff.) Problem solved, get your free OnLive coupon someplace else. But nope, the basement dwellers have to be outraged over something THEY really have control over. No one forces ANYONE where to buy their games.
And that's really the main point here. I'm sick of seeing the online community be so quick to lambast gamestop and it's employees over the most trivial shit. If the company had continued selling Deus with removed codes... ok, then I can understand the outrage. But fuck that... if I were a customer at the counter and saw the gamestop employee was about to hand me a game that had obviously been opened... I'D FUCKING SAY SOMETHING! It's not like gamestop is forcing anybody to give them their money.
Gamestop employees open games to display the cases on the walls. We call this "gutting" the game for display. Most often we have sealed copies behind the counter. If it's our last copy in the store... I tell the customer "hey, this is our last copy... it's been opened and the case has been displayed on the floor. Would you still like to purchase it?" I then inspect the disc... make sure all the original contents are included. All codes and promotions found within the game are also kept behind the counter when the game is gutted. Then I place a seal on the game for policy sake... so it can then be returned to us if unbroken. simple enough. If the game case has been on the floor for a while, and is a little damaged... I apply a shopworn discount (roughly ten percent off). If the customer doesn't want the opened copy... I usually try to track down another copy at a closeby store. If for some reason an employee fucked up and missed an important code or serial number... and the customer is relatively quick about a return, i'll refund them the same copy of the game, a sealed one if possible. BAM. Customer service!
ahh customer service. I take pride in my ability to help customers with issues and my abilities as a manager to bend gamestop's policies so people can leave the store happy. Yes I keep our policy in mind... but I do what I feel is right for the customer. Come in to try and return an opened new game a day or two after buying and say "I hated this game"... i'll probably give you an in store refund to pick out something else... but only if you have a receipt and it's like one or two days later... not a fucking week or month (we aren't a rental store). Come in and slap the game on the counter and have an attitude with me... you won't get that service. I reward customers who know how to properly act in society.
Wow, sorry for the rant. I just tend to get tired of all the animosity that the good ol' nerdnet has built towards gamestop and it's employee's. And guess who gets treated like shit... the people working in the stores... just tryin to make ends meet. Fuck, if there's anyone gamestop is shitting on, it's their employees.
Oh and another thing Sakon. There is a fault in that good post you read. Gamestop will not buy unopened games... period. If there is a receipt, then that's fine... it's proven the game has been purchased from a gamestop store. But if that poster was implying it's messed up we don't buy/trade unopened games then he needs to get his shit straight. We refuse trades for cash or store credit on unopened games because it's our way of reducing the selling of stolen games. We don't mean to call customers thieves. But the sad thing is that people like to steal games and systems nowadays and sell them to gstop for cash. So to reduce this, gamestop will not accept trades with unopened games, doubles of the same game, etc. Fuck thieves and fuck thieves who steal peoples games.
End rant. Off to play deus ex
-
I think what the guy I quoted was getting at was that Gamestop was selling opened games at full price while if you try to return an opened game at full price they wouldn't accept it.
I really have had no problems with Gamestop although I have heard people curse them and stuff. I got no problem with GS not wanting to sell the games with the coupons in them but opening the game and taking the coupon out, which the customer was promised to receive (unless the coupon was just put in there and nobody, not even the customer buying the game knew it was in there), shouldn't happen. Now if like you said, the person selling the game told the customer that the game originally came with a coupon for the On-Live version and that they had taken it out then I would have no problem with it. But I seriously doubt that every single Gamestop warned the customer that they had taken the coupon out.
-
Well if you have a reciept and its within a month, you can return any sealed game for full price.
Sakon, you're also looking at the difference of a couple hours. I got the first email while working. It said to "pull the codes". I was busy doing other shit… so I postponed that. Then after like two hours, got another email saying "pull the game". No one bought the game during that time. I can understand outrage, but the problem was rectified rather quickly. Anyone who bought the game the day before got the code.
And I always inform the customer of whatever I can. Its good buisness. Worse case scenario is they won't by the game.
-
I'll never agree with them opening games and then selling them as "new", not only cause it is opened but because GameStop employees can "rent" any new game in the store, keep it for however long time permits, and then bring it back and sell it as "new". Also, nothing I love more than tearing off a price sticker and getting sticker residue left behind on my "new" game case. Don't give me that security bullshit when they could print out the cover art and put it in a generic case (which they have enough to build a bridge out of) and simply have a customer bring that to the counter to get a sealed copy. Video stores have done it for ages, but I guess GameStop is too cheap to pay for the ink, or the employees are too lazy to go put the display case back everytime someone buys something. Not saying you're lazy tho, Gekko, you seem like a generally great GameStop employee, but I see it as a problem for a lot of them if they had to do that.
Oh, and their total "lol, fuck you" trade-in values.
Only two problems I got with the company.

Questions about the PC version.
Is there gamepad support? That would really save me alot of trouble.
Do I need to play the first one to understand the new one? I been playing around with it and was a bit overwhelmed by certain things. That said, I liked the interface. It's kinda cool to learn there were games like Mass Effect before Mass Effect.
-
In celebration of this incredibly awesome game, here's Yahtzee Croshaw singing the theme of the original game.
… I'm not sure if those are the official lyrics though...

You can use a gamepad but I don't know why you'd want to
.
And this one is a prequel so there might be some inside stuff for people who have played the original but I don't think it'll be that big of a deal if you don't. I think the PC version comes with the original anyway, which I highly suggest playing.
Edit: Also just out of curiosity what do you mean by "games like Mass Effect"? I don't really see any similarities between Deus Ex and ME.
-
I'm more talking about the morality thing and making your own decisions with NCPs. The dialouge flow is also similar.
And well, I'm not really used to all those keys and stuff. I was customizing the controls myself but could not really "feel it" or play in a natural fashion.
-
Got this game tonight and played for about 2 hours. This was the scenario that really stuck out to me.
! I've been a little kept in the dark about what exactly the Purists' stance is on augmentations, and it's not like I had any idea who the terrorists were, so I opted for non-lethal combat. First enemy of the game, I sneaked up on and went for the sneak attack, expecting Jensen to do some Vulcan grip shit or render him unconscious in some awesome way. So imagine my surprise when my character reveals two hidden fucking arm blades and proceeds to mercilessly kill the unsuspecting victim. After all that talk about how he wanted a non-lethal operation.
! It was around at my first firefight that I noticed that those assholes at Sarif, probably as some hilarious prank, only gave me 10 fucking tranquilizer darts, so I had no choice but to slaughter like 20 people with their own pistols. I feel like I was set up and no one but me had any intention of wanting to sneak around, not brutally killing everyone, as that raises… well, a lot of moral dilemmas and there is a lot of political ambiguity surrounding biotechnology. I can sufficiently say that I tried a bit too hard to RP in an RPG.
Also the game is fucking difficult. Most of my victories feel like I'm exploiting something or I'm completing certain missions in some way that the game doesn't intend me to. -
Went and traded my Wii in and then bought the game, shall start it tonight. I'll be streaming it as well if anyone is bored enough to watch someone stream a video game that they've probably played themselves but in poor quality: justin.tv/buuhan_1
-
I love this game. That is all.
-
If you bought the PC version of Dues Ex: HR from GameStop, don't throw that receipt away! GameStop is not only letting you keep the game, but they're giving you a $50 gift card as well as a B2G1 Free coupon as an apology for stealing your OnLive code. That's pretty damn generous for them.
-
Was this coupon available to customers in Canada? I got the game for PC from Futureshop but didn't see any coupon.
Did they open some boxes or was it just not offered up here?
-

Would make sense if non Gamestop employees could rent them too but since they can't, plus it's hard to sell something as new if it has obvious wear & tear on it.
Oh, and their total "lol, fuck you" trade-in values.
Then don't trade-in unless it's a sale or your going for store credit.
-
Non-Dues Ex comment, well more of a rant, sue me:
! I'd agree the employee check out policy gamestop does is pretty shady. The rule is 4 days a worker gets it for… but to sell it back as brand new is pretty bad. I'd honestly have no problem with having this perk only apply to used games but for now I ain't gonna complain... but my only advice to anyone with a serious issue against it is to always make sure you buy a SEALED GAME. You're at the counter... you are allowed to see the product before you buy it. SAY SOMETHING!! Request a sealed copy. Most gstop employees will sell the sealed ones before the floor gut anyway. But if you see it's opened. SAY SOMETHING.
! Don't act like we walk all over people. YOU ARE THE CUSTOMER.
! People who bitch about trades at Gamestop are wasting their time. We aint forcing you to do ANYTHING. Stop complaining. You don't want less than 5 dollars for your precious game that's 3 years old? Then DON'T TRADE IT! I deal with salty people on a daily basis. Like i've offended them or something. Like their shitty first generation, one week away from red ringing, dusty, cigarette smelling, scratched up, cat-piss on cords, off white, bullshit, xbox360 was an important family member or something... and that they are completely outraged I only wanna give them 30 bucks in cash for. And BELIEVE ME, they're gonna tell me about it.
! Or my favorite are the dumb-asses who go and blow a couple hundred dollars on a system... then realize they're spending beyond their means like a month or two later.... and wanna get back what they paid for it. Umm sorry, maybe you should have thought about your responsibilities before impulse buying. Oh and wanna pre-order CoD:3? haha
! "high mr.gamestop, i'm a distant parent who raised a kid with the attention span of a flea. Why oh why can you not give me back all my money for a game he opened, played, beat, in a matter of days and now he won't shut up about getting another 5 hour money waster? I demand free games!!"ahem… excuse me.
Deus Ex: HR comments follow... oh spoilers:
! So I just killed Barrett. He was pretty darn easy. I had an EMP grenade and fucked him up then followed up with an upgraded shotgun and blasted him a few times and shot an explosive barrel next to him. He went down real fast. No problem. Exploring is fun. Hacking is fun. Upgrading augmentations and trying new stuff is fun. This game is FUCKING FUN!!!
-
If I go to GS now and get the PC version could I still get the $50 coupon?
-
I doubt it. All PC copies were recalled. If for some reason they had them for sale, they'd be without the coupon sealed. I doubt you'd get the coupon.
Unless it's a promotion that I'm not aware of.
-
I'm assuming the whole stupid GS removing free OnLive coupons from PC copies deal has been discussed.
-
I'm assuming the whole stupid GS removing free OnLive coupons from PC copies deal has been discussed.
Pretty much and damn this game can be tough as shit if you make mistakes.
-
I don't understand why this game gets only good reviews.. it is an absolutely average game.
(reasons increase in subjectiveness^^)
! Bad AI. No facial animations. Uninspired weaponry. Augmentations are.. optional?, I mean spend ~10exp wisely and your playstyle is done.. the augmentations make your style more "convenient". grr why does punching someone take a whole energy cell. Physics?ha!. Choices? For the ending choose a button for your 3 different ending cinematics. Did the AI help me because it loves me? what? why shut down the ai at all? Isn't it kinda dangerous to enter cryosleep to infilitrate an enemy base? What about your romance? Gah terrifying female clothing, but cool vehicles. Is there actually any branching in the main storyline? Why is Sarif so passive? …no character creation. Um does anybody mention that I talked the "pre final" boss out of it..and then put a bullet in his head? No one sees a problem with that? I soo "used my powers for good" that's why I used all my explosive bullets on the mind-controlled zombie zivilians that attacked me.
Great setting. The consistently well handled dialogue wheel. Decent hacking minigame. Persuasion aspect was good. Some absolutely gorgeous visual level design.
I just find that pretty much every review lies, just look at metacritic Oo.. it is a mixture of sneaking-rpg-shooter but in my perception every aspect is lower "industry standard".
-
Because it does exactly what it sets out to do excellently. It brings the gameplay of Deus Ex into the next generation. I haven't played the game, just letting you know.
Bad AI - I guess you can say it's part of the game's charm. I don't know exactly what you mean by it since I haven't played it but I have seen some videos and it doesn't look too bad.
No facial animations - Not a lot of games have good facial animations but I can't imagine the game lacked them all together.
Uninspired weaponry - Explain please?
Optional augmentations - Of course they're optional, the game is about playstyle choice. They were optional in the original game too.
-
Hmm. Well, the videos did show some bad AI. Like the part where everyone was walking around like dumb ducks after one of their guys was taken out by a Sniper Rifle.
But.. I'm sure I won't mind anything like that.
-
Bad AI.
Never ran into this problem.
@dpara:no character creation.
First game didn't have this either at least not to the same extent as the second game.
why does punching someone take a whole energy cell.
Because constantly knocking out guards without a limitation would make the mechanic broken though technically it already is.
For the ending choose a button for your 3 different ending cinematics.
There's actually 4 endings
Um does anybody mention that I talked the "pre final" boss out of it..and then put a bullet in his head? No one sees a problem with that?
Some of the reviewers have been complaining about the fact that there's often not much choice in the decision of whether or not to fight a boss.
No facial animations.
They're are some and then their are those that just don't look too good.
-
I've played the game about 5 hours and yes, the A.I. is hilariously stupid. The facial animations are indeed bad, half the time the speaking characters lips don't even move.
