I have started to take an interest in adding color to Manga.
This is a work in progress but this is the current image.

This isn't very good. I am not expecting it to be improved much by the time I am done.
This took me a very long time so it really shows how bad I am with GIMP.
If anyone has tips on how to improve speed, shading, and color selection, please let me know. Luffy's hat was done when I first started the image, please disregard how bad it looks. This was a very low quality picture when I started with it. If anyone can tell me where I can obtain a higher quality image I would be really grateful.

Not that great, but there's always room to improve. Try this:

Add a new layer over the original called 'color'
Change the layer style to 'multiply'
Then color

This won't affect the black so everything 'magically' stays in the lines. Good luck!

EDIT:

PS. Don't use the paint bucket tool, just use standard brushes. On the 'color' layer.

Thanks. I am going to try that. I am also working on another image. I really messed up the previous one. Mainly Luffy's hat is what took the beating.

I tried what you said and it does seem to make things easier.
What is it doing? What does it mean by multiply?

I once finished I will be adding some highlighted/brightened areas to Nami's hair.
Kureha's skin is the proper tone yet. Her skin won't be as light as Nami's due to Nami being pale from sickness.
Kureha is also leaning in causing a shadow on her face.

I will be lightening up her skin though later on.

I really appreciate everyone's tips and feedback.

Here is the update to Nami getting threatened by Dr. Kureha. I am working on learning how to use the Air brush better in Gimp. Any tips would be great. I have tried using the color picker and it is incredibly inaccurate. I have been trying to match colors by sight and memory. Here is the new pic though.

I am not sure what else I should do to this pic. What should be done with items that are white in color? The bed was white so I am not sure what should be done there.
