What an awesome chapter. I guffawed.
@Don:
Iam kind of curious how they can see the whales and stuff, when it should be pitchblack down there.
Franky mentions how they are past the euphotic zone, where there's enough light for photosynthesis, and nearly out of the disphotic zone, where there is still enought light for limited vision, but not enough for plants to live. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photic_zone The water around the shabondy archipelago seems pretty pristine in its clarity, so turbidity shouldn't be a major factor limiting visibility.
No worries, soon they'll be entering the aphotic zone and groping around in the dark.
@maxterdexter:
The Kraken has 3000 times more chances than Coribo.
The Kraken for the Strawhat's pet, he can fight San Juan Wolf, and the world is already over 90% ocean, and the octopus of Strong World could get on dry land.
Here Here! I vote Kraken for next nakama too. No one's mentioned this, but it's also certainly possible that the Florian Triangle is a kraken breeding ground with even bigger versions than the one here. In any case, a seamonster ally would make the journey through FI considerably more reasonable. Sea Kings would be warded off and they'd gain an appreciable fighting advantage in the deep waters.
@kagehisa:
what's a little unbelievable is the Caribou somehow thought that with the assistance of his idiot brother and a few oompa-loompa clones, he'd be able to take on the SH's crew. However as soon as he finds out he's alone, he becomes a complete pussy.
Either his idiot brother Coriboo is insanely strong, or the Oompa-loompa's are all Pacifista level -.-
Caribou said to bring out the Gatling gun. That's the weapon that made WWI a world wide war. It's an artillery machine gun that can tear through metal plating. It'd destroy the strawhats in a direct shot at close range. Leading with a weapon that will cause multiple fatalities was a decent strategy for an opening maneuver.
@igetownd:
YESSS!!! The Kraken is EPIC. Much stronger looking (IMO) than the Pirates of the Carribean version, because it's big enough to crush multiple ships with one arm. And Luffy's gonna tame it :D
lol, MYSTERY current, just as Nami was explaining the mechanism for deep ocean currents (also known as thermohaline circulation). BTW, it's mechanism is explained in wikipedia. I think this is as far as real science goes for One Piece. Don't expect Oda to explain "lasers" and Franky's magic speedo.
Completely agreed. Oda gets an idea, looks up the basic science of it online, and then let's his imagination play with the rules. I loled at nami's response to Chopper and Usopp giving up on understanding the more abstract elements to the way the currents worked. It paralleled the arguments around here every time someone (me) tries to explain the science inspiration for an OP mechanism. If the explanation is too complicated, most people prefer ignorance. How does the internal combustion engine work? MAGIC!!!!
Also, I found a neat diagram for how those same currents work in the real world: http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/8q.html
The attached article also explains the mechanism and how it does indeed take ~1000 years for the current to do a complete rotation.

Also, for the record, my vote for Caribou is a putty/ plastic paramecia fruit user. He can manipulate his body's plasticity (ability to hold a single form) just like luffy can manipulate hist body's elasticity. He absorbed that cannonball into his body, it didn't pass through him like it would a logia. He should resistant to impacts like Luffy, and also be able to manipulate his body into different shapes.
