I have to agree with this. The main character's distant relationship with his sister is a subtle yet sharply clever commentary on the stressful and harmful influence of societal pressures on the first born son to become successful. The main character is so focused on his studies, driven to madness by the mundane rigor of academic drills and cram schools, he is oblivious to his family's welfare and hasn't realized that his younger sister has grown into an attractive and independent young woman.

She's not like us, her accomplishments would put her in a league unobtainable by the main character if they didn't already share the same roof. Her talents are what attract suitors, but her insecurities, particularly her fixation with her bra size, is the primary source of endearment to the audience. It comes very easy for men to accept a woman feeling inadequate for something men might find trivial, but another layer of desirability is added when a woman dominates at activities would-be suitors would struggle at.

I seriously thought I was the only one on AP following this series, but I guess I'm wrong.

What got me interested to check this out in the first place is that his relationship with his little sister is almost the same as mine (by that, I mean we don't communicate very much at all). But the characters are interesting enough to follow, and it's interesting to experience how the Japanese view otaku culture from an outside view.

By the way, the anime and novel versions don't really hint at any brother complex thing too much, but the manga is… well it comes on a little stronger. But not really in a harmful way.

In all seriousness, it's a very biased/skewed/idealized view. The fact the otaku is a girl, and is portrayed as having some inner conflict over where to draw the line between her inner fantasy world and real life, is a situation otaku would kill to be in. That the girl is portrayed as successful and talented and society is demonized for looking down on innocent hobbies is also a very pro-otaku view.

A better commentary on the sloven life of the otaku would be Chaos;Head the visual novel. I felt the game's first half nailed how pathetic they are, and why society finds them repulsive. Genshinken romanticizes the camaraderie and hackneyed aspect, but C;H was pretty raw about it. Pretty darn raw.

It is awful, a visually atrocious clusterfudge that makes little to no sense. The art has all the decour of vermilion vomit on a concrete sidewalk. It also fails to convey how absolutely pitiful a human being Takumi really is by cutting out his internal monologues, which were KEY to understanding him. Heck, one whole character arc was dedicated to "mindreading".

Granted, the game is already pretty confusing from the get-go, but when the game becomes less confusing (the second half) the anime implodes.

The anime's only charm was it ended each episode with the game's menu scene, and asked if you'd like to "save your progress". Cute, but no cigar.

i think that this show and legend of the legendary heroes are probably front-runners for the best title of an anime series ever. i've been meaning to watch this show just to say that title as much as possible.

I'm not sure what you are implying here. I'm not really defending anything, just stating my opinion after having watched it. This is a series that is highly subjective to heavy debate, so I can easily see why people wouldn't be interested. All I'm trying to say is there is really no incest hinted at. It's just a series about a normal brother sister relationship (well, the sister is into porn games, so that alone calls for debate)

Anyway, please name what other series I've "defended" that is "utter garbage"? Bleach? Nope, I just state the facts and will sometimes give positive things when a chapter is halfway decent and negative reviews on most of the plot. Naruto? Same. Fairy Tail? I like it more than the others, but I'm not blind to its bad writing.

It's hard to gauge whether or not Oreimo has incest intentions, certainly incest-stuff is becoming more bold as of late (Aki + Sora) but a lot of people are making it out to be such. The fact that the kinds are blood related is usually a big enough barrier to dissuade that kind of thing, but…yeah, there's A+S.

Takumi is literally the most pathetic person I've ever seen in a J-work ever. Shinji Ikari is Domon Kasshu in comparison. But what really hits home about Takumi is a lot of otaku think and behave like him, like in the recent IM@S 2 drama over Jupiter (a boy band) being introduced into the universe, and the semi-recent Kannagi drama where Nagi was portrayed as having an old flame.

NHK had a social commentary barb underneath its messed up characters. Takumi is 100% selfish, he willingly and understandingly isolates himself from the world because of a massive contempt for people who don't share his tastes. He's like a Republican in a city of Democrats who, rather than try to make friends in a hostile environment, moves into the backwoods so he can percolate with his unpopular beliefs.

His primary motives become primitive - whenever he's in the real world, his first thoughts are always about fear. He's always thinking about if someone's going to hurt him, and how to avoid it. Next, he thinks about food. Then, he fantasizes about sex.

He is intelligent, but his Ego is so dominated by his Id his overall impression is that of a dullard. To say it succinctly, Takumi is a human who became an animal.

And NHK is more down to earth, honestly. It's more so about life as an unemployed person with major social issues than it is about life as an otaku. I think people outside of the anime world could relate to it.

I would like to submit without hyperbole that I have been watching this series and enjoying it. It is not the greatest thing I've ever seen, but it's pretty fun. I think any social commentary or critique of otaku culture it has is secondary to the fun-times moe comedy hijinks.

Visual novel/game.

No other medium could convey the character of Takumi (who is 3D) because he says almost nothing aloud, everything is internal monologue. Plus, the delusions that occur in-game can't be triggered in the anime or manga. I remember the anime seemingly picked random good/bad delusions to use, which just muddled stuff up.

It is a ridiculously HQ visual novel though, I had an uncanny valley effect at first because I wasn't used to the pristine animation.

I should note that I found C;H mediocre overall due to the pretty terrible ending/second half, but the first part was amazing because it was also an alternate-reality game.

The links to gazou really worked. There really was a Di-Sword article on Wikipedia that was deleted and could only be accessed by using Google and looking at the cache. One could access Ensue's chat room through IRC. I also played the game in October 2008, concurrent with the in-game events.

It made for a unique experience - I felt like Takumi really was sitting in some bunker on the roof of a skyscraper in Shibuya, looking at the same webpages I was WHEN I was looking at them.

Later it was revealed that it was just Ritsu being Ritsu… playing on Mio's inherent insecurities and actually managing to pull off a pseudo-Freaky Friday Flip - Ritsu acts all girly and Mio gets all gruff and frustrated.

On-topic; This series is kinda fun. Not exactly the greatest thing I've seen, but nowhere near as bad as some of you guys make it out to be. The premise reminds me a lot of Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, with the major difference being, well, that this is actually entertaining. And that Kyousuke actually has a personality, which the male lead in that series completely and utterly lacked. That is the reason I am slowly but surely beginning to lose interest in most anime lately, although I am currently finishing up the series I've started. Mainly because I'm starting to understand the repulsion for otaku more than ever these days, and I realize how it can transform you if you let it. But the main reason is because I've now seen enough genre and honestly, it becomes boring with all these new anime recycling themes.

Although we do get rare gems here and there like Occult Academy (which started out great, but sadly the ending wasn't as good.) and a few other series I find really unique, like Shiki and Legend of the Legendary Heroes.

I think my biggest issue of all with otaku is their total obsession. If there's one thing I strongly believe in, it's never a good thing to over-obsess over anything. Everyone has something they go a little fan-ish about (like One Piece for many of us), but it's always a good thing to balance your interests so you have a better understanding of what the world has to offer in the way of entertainment and the likes. I'm sure most of you will agree with me on that.

I suppose this is sort of on topic, when you consider what this series is about.

Yeah, I agree. The first few times I saw school life series I liked them, but after two or three it just gets old. Unless it's Seitokai Yakuindomo and is loaded with sex jokes, than it's a different story.

I have watched the first episode. It sounds creepy but I love the dynamic between the two main characters. I can't help but love the male lead. I like a very calm style of life as well.

There are creepier things like Old actors of 60 years old banging up chicks that are old enough to be their grand daughter.

I think you misunderstood my post. The otaku business aside, the main reason I am not looking to get into too many more series is because I've gotten to the point where I'm seeing repetitive themes all over the place. I'm not saying I'm going to stop watching anime, I'm simply saying I am going to be more picky about what series I pick up. I also won't have the time for a ton of series once I get busy with real life some day (when I get my arse back into school).

The otaku comments were meant for the discussion of this series, because 50% of the point of this franchise is to discuss Japan's view on otaku.
