so I was re-reading Impel Down in the official Viz release of volume 54 and I had a question about the translation.
On page 5 of Chapter 526:
in the fan translation (above) the line said by Domino is "when criminals arrive, they proceed beyond these bars. They must remove all of their clothing and are then thrust into the hundred degree "hell water" we boil in steel cauldrons further in. This acts as a form of sterilization and also serves as their baptism as they enter the gaol."
but in the Viz translation what Domino says is:
"when prisoners arrive here, they're taken into the area on the other side of that fence. Their clothes are thrown into a bubbling cauldron called the underworld's luke warm bath. It's rather like a baptism ritual and it sterilizes the clothes as well."
…......BUT WAIT THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, DOES IT?!
I mean the viz translation doesn't make sense, right?
Only their clothes are thrown into boiling water?? Then how is that anything like a baptism ritual? In baptisms, isn't it the person who is dipped into water? And why would the clothes need to be sterilized?!
also, it says in the next line (in both translations): "some recent arrivals include fire fist ace, jimbei one of the seven warlords of the sea, and the former warlord crocodile. they're just a few who've undergone our baptism without batting an eyelid. most admirable."
why is it admirable to not bat an eye when your clothes are being sterilized?! Does that mean other prisoners cry when they have to take their clothes off?!?!
And anyway Ace and Jimbei are both still wearing their clothes so wouldn't it have been more convenient to not have removed them at all?!?!!
THIS IS REALLY BOTHERING ME
can someone please clarify to me which of the
translations is correct??
