I have decided after 8 long years that I am going to quit smoking and am wondering if anyone here has accomplished this. I bought patches and gum not sure which I was going to use, but I know they boost success rates from 5% to 30% which is nice. I am wanting to sign up to be a navy EOD and just figure smoking isn't worth it since the training is almost as hard a SEAL training. So anyone have any quit smoking stories or advice on how to be successful.
Quitting Smoking

You want to dispose of bombs ?
…....
I'm sorry but I think it would be healthier if you just continued smoking .

Yes I do and the mortality rate is very low plus pay is pretty good. Also I am sick of smelling like smoke.

You should stop smoking!
I hate that smokers are so inconsiderate of other people when they smoke in public I hate the smell. -
I've tried to quit but haven't succeeded. I haven't really tried those fake steam cigarette things, but I don't like the way they feel in my hand when I hold them. They feel heavy.
The patches make me sick and the gum is odd. It either seems like I'm not chewing enough, and then I chew more and it makes me feel sick. So honestly, I dunno, man. Most of my addiction with it is the oral fixation, so I constantly would need to chew gum or eat candy or drink something. And there's so many times during the day where it feels natural to smoke - after a meal, after a few beers, during a break at work, with coffee, etc. It's hard to get around that - you need to find a substitute.
If I had to go with anything though I'd probably go with the gum again. So I'd try that. It just tastes bad and you have to think too much. Like "OH THERES THE TERRIBLE PEPPER TASTE, TIME TO SWITCH FROM CHEWING TO SUCKING IT TIGHT AGAINST MY GUMS."
Sorry, I'm not much help.
EDIT: Well, I guess I'm better than the idiot above me.

Have you tried just going cold turkey yet?

I think somebody else here is inconsiderate .

Gosh just ignore that then and call me an idiot like everyone else… Sorry for being alergic to cigarett smoke, I guess that just makes me more of an idiot.
Anyways, there´s probaly help you can get from doctors. But you should probably try gum or something, Atleast that won´t affect everyone else.

The trick with quitting smoking is to never start.
After it is a pain in the ass to quit.
-
I have tried cold turkey I end up getting wasted and smoking a pack in a night every time. So I guess I should stop drinking for awhile too. Im gonna try the gum cause I just don't see how a patch would work.
-
Try to quit gradually?
Monitor the number of cigarettes you smoke a day and then try to smoke one less the next day. Rinse and repeat.
Doesn't work for everyone, but I know a couple of people who've gotten off of it that way.
But, smoking is terrible (no offense to you or any smokers). It irritates my throat (and everyone around me smokes… INDOORS :) and it's a financial disaster.

Well Since I posted this I put on a 42mg patch and have not had a cigarette since. Been watching Criminal Minds and Doctor Who seems to get my mind off it.

I actually have no problem with 2-3 weeks without smoking.
Iam just used to smoke while iam with my friends etc..so pressure of the social environment.
Iam just not addicted to it, even when i had many years in which i smoked more than i may could handle and even rolled my own cigarettes without a filter(having cough all the time with black slime^^)But right now i may have smoked 3 cigarettes in over a month and i never felt that desire to smoke.
Just when iam on partys or with good friend which also smoke iam actually enjoy a cigarette but i guess i could even stop that..but right now i actually don`t want to.
Just keep it a bit more low to avoid that sick cough. -
I've been trying to quit for a while now. Probably averaging about one a day this week with the aim to going every other day between a smoke until I quit all together.
I've been smoking on & off for 10 years so I'm not very sure how long it'll last, but we'll see…
-
I tried it once with the "one cigarette less per day" method but it didn't helped. I just cheated.
I arranged my time and then came the day where I had to wait 2hours for the next cigarette… It was horrible, all I had to think of was "wanna smoke, wanna smoke, wanna smoke, wanna smoke.. NOW!"Ánd then later I tried it again. I just quitted. .... for a week in which I always borrowed cigarettes from a friend....
So, I can't tell you what helps the best. The thing is your will. And if you really WANT to quit. If you don't fell the need to, then it will be even harder.
I don't have the will yet, so I stopped trying. -
Damn smudge, good for you, man. I smoke like 3 on my hour drive to work. I average 17-20 a day.
-
Wow. 20 in a day?!
I smoke 20 per year (seriously).

I don't mean to sound like an ass here but, how much does that cost?

A friend of mine did that. When we were students. He was from a modest background. Basically, his smoking habit kind of made him spend on little else. Never went out, bought the cheapest drinks, so on and so forth.

I was spending a couple hundred a month on smokes at least I slipped today but 3 cigarettes compared to 30 is nothing.

I used to chain rollies (rollin tobacco) for a few years, then moved onto american fags and now menthols.
Surprisingly enough they seem to be easier to quite despite my fondness of that menthol flavour.
I've even given up drugs and alcohol which seems absurd, though I'm glad I can spend that extra time and money on my new hobby.

Musta been poor.
I work and make a decent living for my age, so it's not like it's crippling me.
I smoke about 5 packs a week, 2 cartons a month. So about 100-110 dollars a month.

Reading all those posts made me wanna smoke a cigarette.
