I wanted to ask is there anyone else here who plays through old console games and arcade games (on Mame) as a habbit ? Because if so I would want to know if anyone would be interested in my game related rambings . I just finished the hilariously badly done korean arcade game "Hard Head 2" and let me tell you there are a lot of things to say about that one !
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...
Retro games (Old systems , arcades , computers etc.)

Although i dont know if many people consider the PS1 era retro yet i play quite often my classics medievil, spyro some of the final fantasies, tomba etc
Doesnt have to be all that old really i quite often replay any game i know i'll be replaying fallout 3 for example some years into the future.

Oh I have the genuine Playstation . The only system I ever owned .
Speaking of which I have yet to sample any CD games besides the ones I physicaly own because ….I can't get working emulation . Either the emulator closes before even opening or there are tons of DLL files it wants whereafter it'll simply start spamming a "file shape" pengo error or a Direct 3D error . And then there's the fact I dunno if there are any cd emulators that open zipped iso files , because quite frankly I don't even have room to unzip a single game . The zip file alone was over 350 MB . Over 520 mb unzipped !
That's why I couldn't sample the PC engine /Turbografx CD rom games or the 3DO ones (specificly the Gex one , seeing as I never actualy got any of his games outside of a demo) .

I
SNES.
Best games ever.

This person has the right idea. First game, Super Metroid, 3 years old… Heaven.
-
I spent my allowances on Metal Slug in arcades as a little lad. Never owned a console until the N64 era.
-
I recently got into older arcade games, feeling the joys and aspirations of the whole high score angle and really getting into perfectionism.
I've been playing Donkey Kong and Dig Dug when I feel like it. It's a major difference to the kind of game I usually play.
I keep meaning to try and find suggestions on other arcade games in that style of "gotta get that high score" that aren't Pac-Man, or Space Invaders/Galaxian. The former I've never enjoyed and the latter I got my fill of with Retro Gaming Challenge (in all its absolutely glory).
I've also always had a love of pinball, so I play Zen Pinball on the PS3 sometimes. Probably my most played PSN title.
-
^Try Metal Slug then. It's a side-scrolling run and gun. You get points for killing enemies, finding items(hidden ones), a HUGE chunk for making it at the end of the level your freed prisoner streak(you lose them when you die). Other than that, it's fun as hell and has this comedic style with thier 2D sprites. I recommend the first 3 games.
-
I really like Metal Slug, but I actually meant things like a decade older than it. My apologies!
-
I was using a DOS emulator to replay Warcraft 2 last summer. Game was too old for my computer to run it otherwise so yeah. I also love the original Command and Conquer, only thing I dislike is a lack of skirmish. Even the new fan-patches for it don't really simulate an actual skirmish game like Red Alert had, oh well.
For Sega, Shining Force (both I and II, though I prefer II) are really great RPGs in my opinion.
I have a GBA version of Metal Slug. It kicks my ass but its fun.
-
I found lots of old good DOS games . Aside from an awesome MOnty Python game , I found a PLan 9 from Outer Space poiunt and click game made by Konami .
Anyone here remember Ninja Clowns ?
-
Most old games I play these days are point & clicks through dosbox or scummvm, like beneath a steel sky & flight of the amazon queen. Still break out the nes every now and then for some platforming though(20 years old and still working perfectly).
-
I usualy suck at Point and click games . I had to resort to a walkthrough to finish Polda and I got realy stumped with the Plan 9 game .
Also I found avery interesting site that focuses on games and semi rip offs made in Korea , if anyone wants .
edit : as for Ninja Clowns , here's a gameplay video

I usually hit this place from time to time on the way back from school
This place is the very definition of a dive. I've never actually eaten here, but next door is a full blown arcade with stuff like The Simpsons arcade cabinet, Ghosts n' Goblins, Tapper, and even a modified arcade version of Super Mario Bros.. Most of which are just a quarter to play.
-
Heh, back when I used to work in PG county we found a place that was nothing but a sign that said "BEER CRABS LIQUOR." We almost ate there. Almost.
My favorite system is still the SNES. Old Square games, Super SF2 Turbo, Mega Man X, the list goes on and on. Even more if you go into SNES games that I've emulated (ToP, SD3, etc.).
-
I used to spend at least $10 at Time Out whenever I went to the mall as a kid. They had a lot of the old classics, especially Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga. They still have some of the old cabinets there, but most arcades I've been to now consist mainly of racing games, Dance Dance Revolution, and shooters.
My favorite arcade genres are beat-'em-ups and top-down shooters. There are a lot of memories I have about them, especially that Simpsons game that my brother and I always played whenever we went to the Pizza Hut near our house.
Some more of my favorites were:
Battletoads
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Golden Axe
Raiden
Metal Slug -
I wonder , anyone here tried to emulate PC engine /Turbografx games ?I just beat Legendary Axe a few days ago and defeated Jagu . But Holy Hell was level 5 long .
Also , I just recently started to emulate MSX (+) computer games . I hope to try MSX 2 soon as those were aparently more advanced .
And if anyone could explain cd emulation to me , I'd be much obliged .
Anywhoo , I was also wondering if I could get people around here to a little chalenge of some sort . For example if I point out where to get the emulator and rom , if anyone else would be interested in trying a game out and to see who can beat it first .
-
banjo kazooie series.
-
Never played that . N64 was an underground thing here .

ah. yeah even today you may hear mixed reviews on the ole n64. that was my first game system and i think that it had its day, and some pretty kick-ass games.
-
I saw an add for it in a computer magazine called Level , but they never mentioned N64 games in their articles as far as I know . At least the few issues I have .
-
well, there were some real awesome ones…...one of my early favorites was the first star wars: rogue squadron game. haha that one was great
-
You use emulators ?
-
@No:
You use emulators ?
no idea what those are, actually:blink:
-
What ?
The programs you use to play console games on the computer . Like Mame for arcade games , Nester J for nintendo and famicom games , Fison36 for Master system , genesis , game gear and 32 X games , Yame for nes , TG16/pce games , gameboy games and SNES games , Blue for MSX games etc,

…you can play those games on a computer?! blasphemy!!!
hahaha dang that's pretty neat...don't think i'd be interested though.
-
It's been like that for years and years .
Illegal mostly but heck with it .
Also , you can emulate tones of old computer games , dos games , windows etc.
-
I remember one called snes96 that was in general use almost 15 years ago.
Very useful for cd based systems, rip your games to iso and play them through emulators saving wear & tear on your cd's/dvd's.
-
Reminds me of Snesx9 , the only SNES emulator besides Yame that I have found and got to work . Also the only way I could play Super Genjin 2(Super Bonk 2) unhindered because in Yame all sprites flicker with half of them gone every time the screen or they move . It was the same with Super Bonk , but I got some sort of hack and when I set all the settings on on the sprites were okay .
Stil I would apreciate if someone could help me to a working CD emulator , preferabely one that can handle zipped ISOS .
Also finisheed playing "Hammerin Harry" on the NES and the the famicom only sequel "Daiku no Gen San 2" today . The second game , while longer , is less notable because , aside from one all the boss fights feature one enemy , just in diferent suits .
And you wouldn't believe how specific you have to hit the wrecking ball on level 3 to even hit the son of a bitch seeing as your hammer does nothing to him at all .
For more info , check here

Oh say Darkstorm , you ever played Ninja Clowns ?
-
Snes9X was a successor to SNES96 & 97.
As for CD emulators:
pSX = playstation
PCSX2 = playstation 2
ssf = saturnNot played Ninja Clown, looks like a street's of rage style scrolling beat'em'up?
-
Funny as hell , it¨s on romnation in the mame section
http://www.romnation.net/srv/roms/57057/mame103/Ninja-Clowns-08-27-91.html
You only need Mame to run it in , I use Mame32 because it runs the games normaly and I don't have to input any commands into my computer like with the older versions .
The game itself is ….prety darn hilarious . I sugest you try it .
Oh curently playing Ninja Warriors Again on the SNES . Is a prety awesome robot ninja fighting game , even though I curently use Kamaitachi , the smaller robot , and not The Ninja , the huge one . And as for the female robot.....not a chance in hell .
-
ah now this is my thread. I am an old school gamer. I love my nes. I got NES, SNES, sega master system, psx, neo geo pocket. (plus some newer systems) I never got to play a lot of arcade games as a kid. small town, and the only arcade was known to be a good place to get drugs, so my mom never let us go in there. as for emulators; blah. i'd rather get the cartrige and play it on my tv.
did you know nintendo's light gun will not work with the technology of newer tvs. I recently found secret of mana after years. though i haven't had a lot of time to play it.
-
So would you be interested in playign an arcade game now then ?
Alos you ever tried turbografx/PC engine ?
-
Just found an interesting famicom game called Hi no Tori - Houou Hen - Gaou no Bouken . I think it has something to do with the "Phoenix" manga by Tezuka . You control a big nosed , bearded guy who can turn enemies into blocks that he picks up and can then use to build pathways . On stage 3 now and I wholeheartedly recommend it .
-
ya. i love arcade games. i love going to the little arcade at toronto's union station when i am waiting for my train. :3
-
Okay , update . Just finished the Hi no Tori game (specificaly Hi no Tori - Houou Hen - Gaou no Bouken ,because I know there is a shooter by that name too) . Nice game , interesting mechanics , but boy those secret level entrances are hard to find without a tool .
Netx up : Bram Stoker's Dracula on the NES . No , not the "do you stil pursue me?" one .
-
Oh, if you're nes-ward bound at the moment, give gargoyles quest 2 a whirl.
Unappreciated gem.
-
Went for Burai fighter for the moment . I will need to go over the BSD walkthrough again because the second boss doesn't seem to take damage regardless of what I do .
Going over old games I downloaded and never realy played at the moment .
After Burai I think I'm gonna continue with Captain Skyhawk . The first supply stage .
-
Finished with Crisis Force . Not the biggest shoot em up fan but this was prety fun .
Also it's a must play because
! Sphinx battleships!
Going back to Burai Fighter now .
