Oho, excellent~ I admit: I squealed a little when I watched this (mostly when Tyrion slapped Joffery, best moment in the trailer right there). Loved the glimpse of the Cleganes fighting each other and Ned explaining his lordly duties to Bran. Old Nan's narration was also a nice touch.
I'm really quite pleased with how this series is shaping up so far; most of my main concerns (other than the possibility that Martin will die before these damn books are finished) stem from the series' magnitude. The producers have one hell of a large story to tell by way of this show and while there's no earthly way the books can be shown as Martin wrote them, I do hope that they'll be able to streamline the script in such a way that the core elements of the plot will be preserved, with a minimal loss of the truly important details. We'll see.

Eh. Interesting, but I don't dare believe it. The completion dates for this book have been nothing but one long series of cockteases. I would like to think that if Martin only had 5 chapters left to go, he would say something about it on his blog….but then, who knows. I do know that Martin stated that he would announce it the second he was done with the book, so until I hear something from directly from the author's mouth regarding his completion of ADWD, I will remain politely dubious.

It would make sense that he and his publishers want it ready to print as close to the TV series hitting as possible. If the "five chapter" thing is right, he could probably finish it up in the next few weeks and give them time to start printing copies.

Coming from someone who JUST picked up the first book, this is fantastic news. I'm engrossed with this series.
I'd also imagine we'd get the last two books soon. If the series proves successful, they'd be airing "Season 6" in 2016.

Yes, I know. You've all seen publication dates before: dates in 2007, 2008, 2009. None of those were ever hard dates, however. Most of them… well, call it wishful thinking, boundless optimism, cockeyed dreams, honest mistakes, whatever you like.
This date is different. This date is real.

Yeah, I never like that sort of cosmetic discrepancy personally, but in truth I figure it's not that big of a deal in the long run. Same with her hair, which is clearly blonde instead of silver-blonde. I also noticed in the preview that the dragon skulls under the Red Keep were white when they should be black, but hey. It takes the longtime fans out of the moment a bit, but I'm sure the producers are doing the best they can. I doubt the television series can deliver the same level of enrichment that the books can anyway–the budget limitations alone would be enough to hold the series back in that regard. I'm still quite eager to seen what they've done with the series, these limitations notwithstanding.

Dunno about that. As the series has progressed both the books, and the amount of time the author spends writing them, have been getting longer. If ADWD is released on time, then it will be almost 6 years fans have waited since the publication of A Feast for Crows, if I recall correctly. I sincerely hope that the final two books will not take him another 12 years in total to complete, because I'm frankly concerned that he'll be dead by then.

Well, I was rather under the impression that the two main reasons for the book's delay was first, the 5-year time skip that Martin spent a year or so writing that he eventually scrapped, and then the "Meereenese knot" that he's been referring to consistently in his blog for quite some time (you're still in the first book, but you'll learn more about that later on in the story). I'm sure he's been involved in the production of the series, but to what extent, I am uncertain. I know he didn't have much, if any, say in the casting decisions and such, as he plainly said so in one of his blog entries (apparently people were sending him recommendations & he wanted to clarify his lack of involvement in that area). I also know he's taken time to attend several book signings and conventions, and he's been sick on and off throughout the years as well, which I'm sure accounts for some of the delay. But in essence, I think he's just a slow writer with a huge story to write, so I expect the remaining books will take a comparable amount of time to complete as well–especially if they're as large as the last couple of installments. But if he happens to speed it up a bit for whatever reason, why, that would be just fine as well. ^^
Just wishful thinking, as I'll probably be done with Book 4 by the release of Book 5. Perhaps even before the show airs.

The problem is he swore up and down he was writing 4 and 5 at the same time, and that 5 would come out 6 months-1 year after book 4.
It'll now be six by the time it comes out. I may have to reread the whole thing.
Thinking about it, I haven't read Wheel of Time since then either. Hrm.

Thankfully, Hellsing and Berserk (and soon to be HunterxHunter) have trained me for this.
Also, better a slow pace than having Martin struggle to meet a deadline and messing up.

This is really true actually. You definitely want to read the third book as soon as you possibly can because I can't imagine how much it would suck to get even mildly spoiled on what happens in it.

Then you're honestly better off not following it at all, it's extremely easy to get spoiled for this series, as the online community has had six years to chew on the novels in waiting for Dance of Dragons. Everything is out in the open, and given that this series' shocks are part of what make it the height of fantasy literature, I'd go to all lengths to avoid anything where you would run the risk of reading fan discussion or commentary.
That said, the HBO series is going to bring a LOT of attention to the franchise and you'll likely hear a lot of people talking about it. Rather than wait, why not dive into four books in a truly fantastically written series - in many ways unlike any other - and see just what all the fuss is about?
I mean, would you choose not to read HunterXHunter, or Berserk, or Bastard! because you knew there were going to be long hiatuses? My stance on such issues is always to read them and know what it is I ought to be appreciating or if it's really worth all the hype. There'll always be other things to occupy you in the meantime. I can relate to wanting to wait, but it's not like there haven't been other fantastic manga or fantasy novels or series out in the meantime to sate your thirst for quality writing.
Inbetween Game of Thrones novels, I read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, which was outstanding. Its sequel, Wise Man's Fear just came out a few days ago - I just got my grubby little paws on it, and I'll have it and The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie to tide me over until the HBO series comes out.
July really isn't so far off, but even if it was – life goes on.

Why is it with the ending to LOST, so many people seem to hear the part where
! Jack's dad says, "No, actually we're all dead. This is limbo/heaven" but then they all stop paying attention and miss the next line where he says
! "but everything that happened on the island was real. It's only the side story this season where we've been dead."
Its like they hear the first line and go "I KNEW IT!" and then stop paying attention. Or just weren't paying enough attention to begin with. I'll admit LOST didn't get around to quite a few elements it set up (largely due to actors) but… between the show, and a 2 second search on google into the sub media, or that bonus final episode on the last dvd where they go "fine you nitpickers, here's the explanation for the polar bears if you didn't get it the first 12 times we explained it," they DID pretty much answer all the questions you could reasonably have.
But hey, he complained about the Battlestar ending as well, and THAT was like 70% of the motivation of the whole series and featured heavily in every episode.

It's probably because when the sentence "you're all dead" was mentioned, 90% of the people watching it started raging/posting on the internet/commit suicide to not notice what was said after that. But that's something you'd expect from an idiot TV watcher, not from a goddamn terrific writer.

! It looks so fucking awesome. I think their Arya is PERFECT. Jon seems like more of a man than I pictured him, somehow.
! The Others were spot on, scarier than I imagined from the books and HOLY FUCKING WIGHT-GIRL NO. A friend of mine admitted to being scared when watching them and we got him to settle on a much manlier CONCERNED.
! WE WERE CONCERNED BY THEIR SPEED AND… FREAKY SOUND EFFECTS. their eyes were spot on, though.
i'm totally going to be downloading this and scheduling a big goddamn nerdy party for this son of a bitch on the closest projector i can find. -
I likely won't be seeing the series at all until the dvd releases (don't have HBO) but everything so far looks great.
All the kids seem to have been aged a couple years… and I'm totally fine with that. As complex as the roles are, as long as it takes to film, and as long as this will hopefully run? Probably better off with them a bit older from the getgo. A teenager can fake 15-ish a lot longer than they can fake 12, and they can fake 18 for upwards of a decade. (I only just recently discovered that Willow was 23 when Buffy started!)

Yeah, they aged up the kids, and it makes sense to. I knew they were doing it as I've been following the Facebook page and all the character interviews and… well, pretty much EVERYTHING. But somehow I didn't expect Jon Snow to look like that. No problems, though.
I'm just eager to get more Song of Ice and Fire material, tbh.

Loved the preview. Oh my, yes. I can't believe how quickly the show drew me in; those 15 minutes literally just flew by and left me staring at my screen, wanting more.
Some quick thoughts:
! Everything from the costumes to the location gave me a very authentic feeling, with beautiful camerawork and special effects. The Wall in particular looked amazing, very vast and cold.
! Regarding the casting so far, I find Michelle Fairley does a good job translating Catelyn's character; I find her to be utterly unlikable in the books and it seems her television counterpart follows suit. And Ned, ever somber and somewhat melancholic, Sean Bean gets that across nicely. Bran and Arya also seem to be very well cast–especially Arya, I can already feel myself beginning to love her all over again. Can't wait to see more.
! I agree with Silence that I hadn't envisioned Jon Snow looking quite that way (more elegant, perhaps), but that's fine. I figure as long as the cast can make their characters believable, it's no big issue.
! But that said, I do have to say that I'm really a bit disappointed with the portrayal of the Others so far. I can definitely sympathize with certain production limitations, but these things look nothing like them outside of the eyes. The Others are not jet-black beings dressed in rags; their skin is extremely pale, and they wear camouflaged armor. The white walkers, and all that. It's a small thing that certainly won't keep me from enjoying the show, but it did catch me slightly off-guard. The wight girl was wonderfully well done, I must say. It was a very chilling moment.
Also, the cool people at Westeros.org posted their first impressions of the first six episodes of AGOT; if interested, you can check it out here. It's a good read, though be warned it contains some small book spoilers.I am so ready for this series, folks. "Hyped" doesn't even begin to cover it. ^^

Whelp, I'm on page 200, and already I've got questions and surprises coming at me:

1. Almost everyone in this story likes to bitch, piss, moan or otherwise be an ass. King Robert is a child when it comes to the Dragon Family, Joffrey is a mama's boy, Catelyn's pettiness and weakness can only be outdone in unlikeability by Robert's wife, Viserys is an annoying, abusive dork (I heard he gets better), Sansa is a brat but I can actually forgive her since she's only a kid, and I'm almost sure Alliser Thorn is related to this man:
I figure the only reason we still like that one guy who got his tongue cut off is because he can't make an ass of himself.
(Disclaimer: Don't get me wrong, this still makes for good reading. It's just surprising to find everybody so pissy is all).
2. Tyrion…what is that little man all about? He tried to kill a kid (most likely) and I still like him (unlike Robert, who got a boner from dead dragon babies). Jon and Arya have my sympathies and admiration as well.
3. The scene where Ned finds out how much gold King's Landing really has made me literally lol.
4. Tbh, I like how Martin skips over the long journeys, instead focusing on the pivotal parts and summarizing the more smaller parts.
5. Aaaaaaaand Princess Dany is pregnant. And dominant. And probably a dragon.
6. A part of me is biting my nails wondering what Robert will do if he ever finds out what his wife had been a part of crippling Bran. Not as worrisome as what will happen when Ned finds out.
7. I like that three eyed raven. Ravens are cool. Yeeeessssss.

I'm still treading through the 100s of Clash of Kings. I dunno what to think about the new PoV characters just yet, but I'm really liking all the Arya focus (I've already gone through three Arya chapters at least).

Its always a bit weird when he adds a new POV character to the mix, but it always works out to be interesting and you usually like them by the end… even if they were a terrible horrible character you hated from someone else's POV. I still remember having an "oh shit, he's using THAT characters POV now?" at least once.
And its a real thrill when a character you liked from a previous book becomes a POV character.
Of course, that ALSO usually means their life is about to suck a whole lot more...
