I know it's not fantasy, but I also highly recommend The Expanse.
Game of Thrones (tv show thread)

Despite all …
... I'm excited as hell to watch Sunday's episode (Monday morning for meg). It will likely be illogical local, rushed, unsatisfying, but there's nothing on TV like it.
I'm actually quite excited for the Amazon Tolkien tv-series they're developing now. And Netflix' Witcher. More so than any Game of Thrones spin-off that's being developed.
Yeah. I have almost 0 hype for the spinoffs after the last couple of seasons of GOT. If Martin came out and said that he's had a large part in writing them from beginning to end, I'd be intrigued, but also pissed that he's doing something else instead of finishing his books. Witcher is the only fantasy series coming soon that I have any hype for, and even that I'm not too sure about after seeing the casting and hearing interviews.
-
is gon be tomorrow, all what's left is wait and see if Jon is going to do what he has to.
-
@Daz:
Don't forget that Daenerys also has Woman With Power and Exotic Foreigner adding to her crazyness equation, which is inverted in Jon by his Milquetoast White Local Guy With Dong factors
I think the subtext is more targyaren are crazy and Starks are great than it is about their gender and color.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
So how would any of you feel if Danny just killed Jon(and Sansa) and kept the throne and that's the bitter sweet ending. The once who burned a whole city is the one that ended up ruling?
I don't belive it will happen but how would you feel?

Par the course for Westeros' history of being an awful shithole, at the bare minimum.
-
Last episode, time to burn it all down once and for all.

Dun dun dun dun dun dunn dun

One last time

That would be pretty dope.

Is Bronze John ruling The Vale in stead for the creepy Arryn kid? Or did that whole angle just vanish?
-
! Holy shit, this was the most fun I've had watching Game of Thrones since season 4. I also love how Tyrion is just instantly in charge. Also that annoying little kid is an adult now and Gendry is an actual Baratheon.

BRING ON THE MEMES!
-
My kneejerk reaction is that I liked it, but I read the leaks so I knew what was coming and just rolled with it.
! Best scene was Brienne writing about Jaime. That actually got me a bit emotional.
! No idea why Arya wants to sail West though. I don't remember anything about her wanting to explore. Probably just setting things up for a potential sequel.
! Silliest moment wasDrogan not killing Jon. Your mom dies and you don't care about the guy who almost certainly killed her?all of those unqualified secondary characters becoming the high counsel. How was that not my first choice? All and all, I liked this show, even with it's issues.
-
Every good thing about this show came from Martin's writings, and once Beinoff and Weiss had to make up their story, it showed them what total fucking hacks they are.
-
! A GAME OF THRONES FINAL LEADERBOARD
! Jon: Back with Tormond, where he belongs. De-facto King Beyond the Wall. Kit Harrington is finally allowed to sleep.
Sansa: Dark Phoenix Queen In Da Norf, may her reign be long and her enemies die painfully.
Arya: Sailing west to Americos (or Valinor, whichever comes first), voted most likely to find One Piece. Is going to stab so many exotic people.
Bran: King of the Six Kingdoms. Comes with his own throne. Is his own Master of Whispers. Bloodraven would be proud.
Tyrion: Trapped in the same dead-end job. Paramount Lord of the Westerlands by default. Eventually makes the toilet where Tywin died a national landmark.
Davos: Master of Boats. Master of Grammar. Becomes father-figure to every child in Westeros and beyond. Carves reindeer in memory of Stan the Man.
Bronn: Master of Coin. Paramount Lord of the Reach. Lord of Highgarden. Winner of the Social Mobility Award. Will open many brothels in the memory of Littlefinger.
Brienne: Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, just as her ancestor Dunk was. Her section of the Lord Commander Book is like 50 pages long and is entitled I'M LOOKING FOR A HIGHBORN GIRL WITH AUBURN HAIR.
Sam: Archmaester. The editor GRRM will never have. Would totally give dogs the right to vote.
Podrick: Kingsguard, just like his mommy. The tales of his spear and his other spear will echo down in the history of the Kingsguard and the brothels of King's Landing.
Grey Worm: "Fuck this shit I'm out." Retires to his girlfriend's old house.
Tormond: Is reunited with his man. Has so many new ginger adventures to go on. Has so many bears to fuck.
Dany: The coin landed on its side.
Drogon: Is going to crash on his old college roommates' couch until he gets his life back together.
Gendry: Lord of the Stormlands? I mean, by default.
Edmund: HOLY SHIT EDMUND MY MAN YOU'RE STILL ALIVE. Continues his rule over the burned-out hellscape that is the Riverlands.
Asha: Lord of the Lesbians and the Ironborn. Still waiting on Uncle Victarion to come back from his vacation.
Ghost: A GOOD BOY Ice Spiders: Did not happen.
Elephants: Did not happen.
Aegon VI: Did not happen, thank christ.
Cleganebowl: GET FUCKING HYPE
Winds of Winter: Still not out yet.
! Congratulations, Westeros! You survived the Targaryen Rule By Nuclear Dinosaur, the Baratheon Rule By Drinking, and the Lannister Rule By Doing Whatever Would Kill the Most People!
! Your reward?
! Becoming the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Have fun.
! Your new king knows about every single time you've ever masturbated. -
! Also, wouldn't Bran be infertile due to being crippled? Kinda hard to make an heir that way
-
@S.C.:
! Also, wouldn't Bran be infertile due to being crippled?
! Electoral monarchy, whether your dick functions doesn't matter.
-
! So Stark was Common Speech for Roosevelt?
-
what am I going to look forward to watch on Sunday nights now?
-
Haha those leaks ended up being true. Don't think I'm even gonna bother with the remaining 2 books that's assuming they get released.
-
Also, if the writers were strapped for time or whatever, they should have just one battle at King's Landing with Dany winning straight away, so we could at least one one full episode for her heel turn, if nothing else.
-
Dany's turn made perfect sense to me. Yeah the show rushed it because they don't know how to write without Martin, and turn every sex scene into a rape scene. and generally just don't get subtley, nuance or pacing…. but .... it was obvious?
! She constantly talks, throughout the series, about burning entire cities to the ground. She does it in Qarth, she does it in Mereen, she has to be talked out of razing King's Landing multiple times throughout Seasons 7 and 8. She also leaves each slave city once she's conquered it and added to her armies, leaving Yunkai and Astapor to fall back into chaos, then leaving Mereen, a place where she has made life demonstrably worse for her subjects, in the hands of a company of sellswords.
! She's been quick to violence and quick to collectively punish anyone in her way since the very beginning, and more than a few people have made the point that what she really cares about, more than anything, is adoration. Those that don't love her have no value to her, which explains why she was more than happy to head back to Westeros after her popularity with the Mereenese plummeted, due in part to publicly executing one of her Mereenese advisors.
! And then that whole tinder pile goes up after her lover and her closest advisers betray her, right after she watches her best friend get beheaded, her final words being "dracarys."
! She was already cruel, violent and impulsive, she's been getting paranoid since coming to a land where she doesn't get the adoration that she craves, and now she's got two extremely traumatizing catalyzing events that she carries into battle with her. Anyone that doesn't see what happened as the logical result of her entire story is being deliberately obtuse.
! Yeah she has a character arc and a sympathetic backstory, but… she's consistently been one of the nastiest and most brutal characters in the show, in a show full of nasty and brutal characters, she just didn't do much of the horrible stuff personally.
! Any other narrative "the decendant of the mad king that hid in different land is coming back for revenge to conquer everyone with dragons" would very obviously be an imminent villain threat. It's a testament to GRRM's skill that he made that character sympathetic, someone whose side you could see and root for... but... she has ALWAYS been that character. Her actions at the end were not new.Side note, she also has the one narrative not connected to literally anything else in the story. You could have skipped her parts entirely and nothing in the narrative would have changed in the least until she arrived. Even as late as book 5 the only narrative that overlaps with hers even a little is Tyrions, and they never even speak during that book. In all the canon books, she's had ZERO interaction with any of the cast.
Side side note, its her story arc in particular that gave GRRM writer's block on book 4 causing him to split it in half, and that same arc that cause book 5 to take six years. I dunno what's taking book 6 so long, but I won't be surprised if turns out its something to do with her again.
-

Why not? From what I have heard, Martin actually takes his time and lets the characters organically drive the plot rather than plot and shock driving it like the show.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
This finale was shit and quite literally one of the biggest failures I have seen. The technical aspects were superb, but the writing didn't tie any of them. The moments in this finale should've been THE moment for the characters and yet I couldn't really give a single shit about where which character goes. All of it felt like a lazy fanservice ending that quickly tied up stuff to end the suffering.
-
! If we are to compare the ending to LOTR, e.g. bittersweet as Martin has said, then …
! Frodo got a much better deal than Jon. Frodo went to a dreamland. Jon went to hell.
! I expect book Jon to be unable to have children (i.e. dead) anyway.
! In a thousand year's time when the Wildlings's numbers have recuperated, we'll have another war or something.
! I half expected Drogon to come and save Jon ...
! The Dorne army did nothing during this conflict. They could've just rolled over everyone. Of course, the Iron Born have probably made about 10000 ships by now.
! Now we know why Bran looked at Tyrion funny in episode 1. He must've seen this.
! I wonder how Martin feels about the ending to his series being revealed. -
! Neutral end.
House of Starks win.
Ending (1/3) A Dream of Spring unlocked.
To unlock other endings, wait for a decade or two and make a different choice.
(terms and conditions apply)
! Hint: Alternative route possible when tasked with the choice "Tell your family the truth about your lineage or not"
For the full experience and the true ending, you must first experience the Chaos Route(Lannisters) and the Order Route(Targaryen).
Thank you for playing. -
The Lawful route (Stanis) and the Good route (or "I died too soon to commit war crimes" Baratheon-Tyrell aliance)when?
Also, I want the Evil route (Euron) and the Who? Route (Balon).
-

Apart from Daenerys only ever targeting enemies, betrayers and slavers before, part of the problem is that for the past two seasons a lot of the developments used to get Daenerys here have themselves been immensely contrived, her loss of a Dragon (hell, both Dragons) and Missandei being prime examples.
And at the end of the day, all the foreshadowing in the world =/= believable character motivation and development.
Torching innocent people without provocation after an unconditional surrender was a new thing for Daenerys, a character previously willing to lock up her dragons after they killed a single innocent child, and the show never properly articulates why she takes to Kings Landing like a fiery lawnmower, maybe beyond bitch be craaaazy! "She looked at the Red Keep and just SNAPPED-actual GOT showrunner" -
is gon be tomorrow, all what's left is wait and see if Jon is going to do what he has to.
haha he actually did.
still dissapointed that Jon's heritage lead to nowhere. -
This post is deleted!
-
It lead to Dany's insanity.
What led to nowhere was bran time traveling.
And them changing Asha to Yara to avoid confusion with Osha, but now there is a Bran and a Bron in the council.

Dany's turn made perfect sense to me.
lol she went from someone who was moderately brutal but with good intentions to the most evil person in history for no reason, how does that make sense?
-
lol she went from someone who was moderately brutal but with good intentions to the most evil person in history for no reason, how does that make sense?
She has the devil gene
-
No Robby, her turn IN THE SHOW didn't make sense the way it was done. That she would turn was obvious and will happen in the books, just ten times better.
Also,
! Jon joined r/freefolk to escape the shitty writing once and for all and live for the memes.
-
My favorite is
! Jon and Tormund mirrowing Korra and Asami going north.
-
… well, that was lackluster.
I mean, the first 20 minutes or so were amazing. There was so much tension in absolutely every move, every word, I could feel my heart pounding. Then the tension was released and... meh.
-
Love how Dothraki "died" in episode 3, came back in episode 5 and then disappear like a ghost army from LoTR.
-
Cersei should have flanked them during the Long Night against the Night King.
She could have realistically killed the dragons and crippled their forces directly after they are done or preoccupied with the walkers.
Then the Lannisters can have the throne and the Seven Kingdoms will be at constant war.
A chaotic endOr Jon snow shouldn't have told Danny and stayed loyal to her.
The entire Kings Landing would have survived and Danny would rule over with an iron fist.
Creating her Utopia of Peace and Order under her own terms.
To be honest, if she wasn't a craze pyromancer she can be quite an okay ruler.
of course that would mean deceiving Sansa and her probably dying but eh better than burning down more than half of Kings Landing.
Although he would probably spend the rest of his life questioning himself and commit suicide somewhere down the road.Man the alternate endings for this show are endless
-
You don't know where the celling will colapse. But that set is too clean for the "red keep is collapsing" thing that they had going on.
-
Didn't really watch it but I got the big points
! I'm glad Jon is not king.
! A nice scene to make Jaimie BS seems sweet. Kind of redempting his reputation as kingslayer. But mostly cool to see Brienne get her proper place.
! The Starks really came out on top in the end. 2 kingdoms and Jon get his real happy ending. Not to shabby. Probably helps they had more bodies than anyone to throw into the game.It probably bother me less than Breaking Bad ending. I thought everyone story got fucked to served Walt wereas in this Danny got fucked to serve the rest so it's get more decent to more characters. Also helps that my anger burn out on the previous one.
I don't know if it's satysfying but it was decent.
-
Agree. Taking that the nigth king was the sub boss and that Danny went mad too fast, and that the plotters died stupid deaths, this chapter on its own was good enough. Except Bron in a position of power. Olena is going to come back from the death to murder Bron.
-
So one episode to deal with the night king, one episode to deal with Cersei and one episode to deal with Dany is what we got in the end
-
! Finally, the damned wolf was pet. And it looked awful. Dragon CGI seemed better somehow.
! Also, what the fuck was the point of the horse scene in the previous episode if it just got vanished. No trace, no nothing. -
So one episode to deal with the night king, one episode to deal with Cersei and one episode to deal with Dany is what we got in the end
The monarch of the week
-
Like watching it all you really can think about is the wasted effort. So much spent on scenary, sets, design and extras. So many in essence perfectly interesting scenes being hamstrung by their lack of time needed to let them grow and unfold and leave room for an emotional attachment. This desperately needed more episodes to make it breath…..but i realize that at this point i'm just repeating myself
-
This season and last REEEEAALLLY should've been 10 episodes each.
-
On a side note if those present at the election represent the current great houses in westeros they can't have much going for 'em right now. Tarley used to run under Tyrells no? Iron borne lady represents those guys who hates everybody. Gendry i suppose hold what's left of the storm islands thingies. Brienne's house i just assumed was rather insignificant but maybe i'm mistaken. Davos has nothing. Tully is like the last guy in his whole family in a devestated region. I guess the Arryn Royce combo still has it's shit in order tho. And the Starks just bailed on the whole thing, even if their shit also is wrecked
-
Ujum, Tyrells are extint (even if that were, the Hightowers, lords of the citadel, where the maesters are and the church was before kings landing, would have made the move to take over the reach), Riverlands are a blazed crater, Dorne did dorne things and stayed mostly outside, the Stormlands ceased to exist since Stanis went north, Briene's lands are there, Davos has like 4 islands, only one with green stuff in it, and Littlefinger's plans hinged on the Vale staying nice and strong to sweep in whenever he deemed oportune.
-
I can't believe Bran got away with pitting his two biggest contenders to the throne against each other by making up some bs story about a secret wedding. All hail Bran the Broken (even though that's an awful title)
Sansa got what she deserved, an independent North. Yara and the Ironborn, eat your heart out.
