"I hate you."

I missed the episode, I got busy with work and time got past me.
The writers said that this episode is supposed to be the series worst. Also, the credits pre-screened this episode along with History 101, and called it shell of its former self.
From what I read on Reddit, the people who are still watching enjoyed the episode a lot.
-
It was a good episode. The Pierce subplot was pretty funny as was when that British guy was introduced. I liked Annie and Jeff's story too.
-
Ok just watched it. Forgot I set the DVD-r to record.
That was a pretty good episode. I'm not even a bit fan of the Inspector Space Time, and enjoyed it.
-
She sure likes rapping. Every single blooper reel she does at least one of them! Well, I can't say she's bad at it.
…really? I always took her rapping to be like a "I'm not really good at it, but I'm a hot white chick rapping, so people laugh, and I'm aware of this so I'm in on the comedy" kind of thing o__O
I liked the episode, but didn't enjoy the Annie sub-plot. I liked that Jeff wouldn't be a cheat, but Annie took things a little too far "sitcom-y" for my tastes. Everything else was aces tho.
Tho I wonder why Pierce bowed so strongly to Jeff, he wouldn't do that, he sees Jeff as his chief rival.
-
That wasn't as bad as I thought it would. I was expect something high concept that utterly failed but this just an average half hour of TV. I don't like how smoothly the annie plot ended. I wish i had seen more of pierces suggestions, they really seem to be under using him this season. He spends a lot of time not with the gang. I feel like there's a lot of stuff on the convention floor that I missed so i might even rewatch it. Not their best but I think they just set out to make a standard episode of TV and they did that. meh

According to the writers during an AMA, Pierce is so underused this season because they didn't know if they would even have Chevy. He sometimes doesn't show up. So they're forced to write him into C plots, and apparently they've been writing him so that he's interchangeable with Chang. I.E. the Christmas episode; What ever Chang's role in the Christmas episode is, it was original going to be Pierce.

In the overnights, Community's actually up this week (2.3 vs. 2.1 last week and a 2.5 for the premiere). It's a bit difficult to translate that into actual demo though, as Parks and Rec had a 2.5 and 2.1 as well, which translated into a 2.0 and 1.5, versus a 1.9 and 1.2 for Community.
But these are promising numbers overall and should translate into a 1.4 or 1.5, give or take.Nope, 1.1 again. :I Even Parks dived. What an odd skew…
-
In terms of overall viewers Community came out on top for NBC comedies last night. It should be adjusted up again.
-
Parks dived? On one of their best eps of the season? I have sadness.
I dislike the Inspector Spacetime gags so much that I couldn't even make it all the way through last night's episode. Glad y'all were pleasantly surprised, though.
-
I liked a few character moments but a lot of stuff had me questioning how that makes sense for the characters.
Like troy suddenly being the fitter one of two (wasn't that abed), or annies whole plot, I think I liked shirley's part the most in this.
Maybe I digging to much for this but with her shop going and her marriage repaired she is just way more self asserted.
I feel like if this was season one she would have been insulted to not be invited.Pierce is just weird, what was up with the bow. I liked Abed's I hate you at the end although the inspector scene was very cringe inducing.
Troy and britta's relationship is also super weird. Still unsure if it's the weirdness I love community for or just awkward for the sake of awkward.
-
I don't really see anything wrong with Troy and Britta's relationship.
-
I just find it weird Troy and Britta went "they're going to take it slow" last episode, but this episode opens with them having sex.
I also thought for a bit that Jeff and Annie were going out for a bit since they were going skiing together alone and last episode they "coordinated costumes". It wasn't until the "separate rooms" and the explicit reference of friends that made me realize they weren't.
I also just want to say Annie's "freestyle" was clearly scripted, so I can't really say she's gotten better since that might have been written for her instead. I always thought she was bad though in the bloopers, and with Conekiller in that she just seems to be in on the joke.
Huh. Was expecting a bit of a bump this episode though. Also surprised with Parks and Rec even though I don't watch but I've read it was a good episode too.
-
Abed and the pandering to dumb fanboys is the biggest problem with the show right now (well, and the character regression). Hopefully this is the end of the tired Inspector Spacetime gag.
-
I'm the only person who really likes Inspector Spacetime?
That's because you all haven't seen the awesome series.
-
I'll admit, one of the problems this series is going to face is that it is going to pander to the fans a lot more, because it's feels it has too; with the notion that Dan Harmon is gone, its compensate for it. The fans have a VERY unhealthy relationship with him, believing anything he writes is gold. But I don't think people really pay attention to his older works… they're not good. Also most fans say the series doesn't get good til the first Halloween episode, and Dan wrote 1/3rd of those beginning episodes. But anyways regardless of Dan, the show itself feels it NEEDS to cater to the die hard fans, because it's all its going to have left. Be it true or not, its what it believes.
You already knew most of the fans were going to dislike the first episode this season, just because of the bad break-up. There's been a lot of bad news since Season 3, and its going to taint people's excitement. It wasn't perfect but there has been far worse episodes, I can name a few episodes that were weaker, Introduction to Film, Spanish 101, Advance Gay, Biology 101, and Messianic Myths and Ancient Peoples.
Also people need to remember, Community has ALWAYS been a slow starter. It takes about 3 to 5 episodes each season for it to get its groove back, and usually ends super strong.
In fact, I remember people discussing how weak and worried they were about Season 3, it wasn't til Remedial Choas Theory that people got really hyped up again. Actually I remember when the slope between Biology 101 and Regional Holiday Music. It was a roller coaster ride of people not liking it. Though now, it seems to be well liked after rewatches.
I guess my problem about the recent complaining and harshness is that most of the problems people have with Season 4 were planted and started in Season 3. But without Dan Harmon to be here to say its part of his vision, its now bad...
Common complaints on Reddit;
I don't like how Troy doesn't know what sex is anymore!
Because he doesn't know what a BDSM sex dungeon is, doesn't mean he doesn't know what sex is OR hasn't had it. He can have normal sex and not be that adventurous But people just now realized that Troy has went from stud quarter back to naive man-child. This has been his character since Epidemiology.
I don't like how this show has become a live action cartoon!
Not to go back to Epidemiology… but we lost stop being grounded in reality since Zombies became real. AND even if your suspension of disbelief wasn't lost there, you should've lost it some where between the second paint ball war and Chang taken over the school.
I don't like that Britta and Troy are together! I don't like how Jeff and Annie are a pseudo couple!
Britta and Troy have had been hinted since Season 1, and became something in Season 3. Jeff and Annie again hinted in season 1, and its been like this (granted not this strong) since Season 2, more so Season 3.
I don't like Abed TV! That was taking it too far!!
Ego apple and Chang's thought balloon.
While I am not justifying or saying any of the complaints aren't legitimate… its just annoying that people are bothered by them NOW. Most of the character recessions started in Season 3, people are just now noticing because Community no longer has the protection of "Dan Harmon's word".
-
And… no adjustment up. Aw well, we're still tied for the second highest comedy of the week on NBC.
Which is sad.
-
So we now know where the most recent episode came from;
Also its fun to mention that another AMA stated that Gillian Jacobs wanted to do a haunted house scooby doo themed episode. And another Redditor during the hiatus guessed word for word the Abed TV Bit. Reddit knows the future.
-
NBC itself nosedived in ratings. So much so that they are number 5 in the February sweepstakes. Univision is in 4th.
Let that sink in. There are the big 4 networks. And one of them is not even in them.
I don't really follow the fandom and reddit and tumblr. I pretty much watch it by myself and check this thread once in a while. I found this episode OK, a little weaker than the previous two, but not by much. I liked Alison Brie's acting a lot in a very weak plot for her, she really properly channeled Trudy Campbell. Apart from Jeff and Trobed, pretty much everyone was shafted this episode writing-wise.
In general, I don't really like the show becoming more and more Abed-centric. The show, in my opinion, is at it's best when it does the emotional moments. It has tremendous heart and that needs to be front and center. Abed is representative of the pop-culture homages, and that is slowly but surely, outweighing everything else. I liked it when they referenced pop-culture without becoming cold and distant. Like the bottle episode, or the clip show, which remain two of my favourite episodes. I also love downbeat character building episodes, and Mixology is right up there among my favourites. More of that, less of Inspector Spacetime.
Also, not on board with the complete nerdification of Troy. Been a long bugbear of mine. He lost all independent sides to his personality in his friendship with Abed. Remember the high-school football player? Neither do I. -

I thought I'm just noticing abed much more since he is one of my favourites.
-
There have been complaints about the increasing focus on Abed since mid-season 3.
-
I never minded the season 3 focus of Abed, because it feels like each season has a different character that was its "major character" - Jeff in season 1, Pierce in season 2, and then Abed in season 3. But he's held the focus this season too much (though with only three episodes so far). I think Community has increasingly begun to pander to its fanbase starting with season 3, and the increased focus on Abed is because of that.
-
For me I've always kind of saw; Jeff as Season 1 main character, with Chang being the antagonist. Pierce was Season 2's antagonist, but the main protagonist was shifting from Jeff to Troy. By Season 3, Troy had taken over; Chang returned to becoming the antagonist.
But this season has become very… Abed focus.

You're my favorite person right now.
I guess I'm one of the only ones that actually likes Inspector Spacetime. Like… okay so this season seems a lot more Abed-centric, but I'm not entirely sure I understand why it's pandering to have an episode based on Inspector Spactime (again). When Dan Harmon was writing this, it's always a cool pop cultural homage, but now that he's gone it's pandering. Not that I don't see there may be some truth to it because the writers are working hard here to make it still appeal to fans but.... What about that time when the whole episode was Sucker Punch/My Dinner with Andre? What about Law & Order? What about pretty much any episode being at any given moment a parody of something? There was a paintball civil war documentary that lasted for TWO episodes. I guess it feels weird to see people say "I'M ANGRY THAT THEY'RE PARODYING THIS THING" when most of the show is like that. I can just as easily say "I HATE HOW THEY PARODIED ZOMBIES. IT'S SO OVERDONE." It had weird moments, yes, but I don't think it was a bad episode. I actually found it to be kind of cute. Not perfect in every sense, no. There's always something. This one was my favorite episode of the three thus far. And anyway, we've got some upcoming episodes that shouldn't be so Abed-centric. Jeff Winger is going to be in the spotlight. Oh, wait, I just remembered I hate how Jeff-centric the show is! What do people want, more Pierce? More Pierce being an offensive jackass? is that it? I do like that they continued the plot from the 8-bit episode despite its odd timing in chronology, though. It was weird how they're like "WE GOT TO GO SAVE THE DEAN! ... BUT FIRST VIDEO GAMES." Since it was pretty self-contained it could have switched order, but it felt more like one of those "omake" in anime.
-
So as not to stretch the board more: I agree with Silver R Bolt's megapost (quoted above) entirely!
Also, Piratemarimo, I love Inspector Spacetime! I loved the way the fans took it and ran with it. I wonder if the Minerva thing was taken from that or is wholly original to the show.

Anyway, I finally got to see the episode, and I enjoyed it. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad. I loved a lot of the jokes, and McHale ripping his shirt off ordering them all to bow before Thoraxis was amazing.
As for the Abed centric thing, here's how I see it: this is an entirely different Abed. He's already progressed more this season than he ever had in the show. Throughout 3 episodes, they've taken him from a source of jokes to a defined grown up character, and I love it. Him realizing that he didn't need to panic because he knew Troy would come for him was fantastic. It's a whole lot different from the Abed last season who nearly destroyed a friendship because of pillows and blankets. Yes, it's kind of bummed me out that we haven't gotten some focus on the other charaters, but we've got ten episodes left, and that's a lot to go.

Yay! I still need to watch the webisodes as a matter of fact. I think it'd be pretty funny if people cosplayed Inspector Spacetime irl but show up at Convergence or something to see how many get it.

Yes, yes they are.
I thought so, I just didn't think they looked the same. I watched that episode the other day and they look different.

- Pandering to a pop-culture phenomenon that predates your show (Zombies et al) is called homage. Making a show that you created in-universe the increasing focus of the universe to the extent that you have an episode on that is stale. Inspector Spacetime worked as a gag (and how!). It does not work as an episode.
- People are not angry over parodies, when they are subtle, or a mish-mash, like paintball. Before you bring up Dinner with Andre, that was a huge curveball. All the promos to that episode had worked up the Pulp Fiction angle, and the misdirect was brilliant when it hit.
- Dan Harmon being axed has nothing to do with this (at least not my rant). The show became increasingly Abed-centric after the claymation Christmas episode. Season three was mainly about Abed being a total and utter emotionless robot douche. Troy, Annie and Britta were mainly side-players to that drama.
- Jeff is human. He has insecurities, flaws, and is relatable. Abed is a pop-culture spewing robot. It makes sense to anchor the show to the former. Or maybe turn the focus on one of the women. Apart from a brief sideshow during the end of season 2, Shirley's character has majorly got the shaft from the writers. And Annie has been stuck in the naive crushing-on-Jeff mode since early season two. We haven't seen her neurotic control-freak side in ages, apart from bits and pieces here and there. And no, this past episode doesn't count.
-

I just heard the name Nick Kroll in context to Parks and Rec the other day… Oh right, The Douche!
Is this the only instance of the two shows sharing cast members?

Martin Starr was in both, as a poli-sci teacher in Community and employee of the Snowglobe Museum in P&R.

What, there's good pandering and bad pandering then…. I'm more confused because it's not just some random show they made up, it's supposed to be a parody of Doctor Who, which does predate the show. If it wasn't in any way referencing to a widely known show, I think I'd be more annoyed by it as other people seem to be. I'd totally understand people if this episode was entirely dedicated to Kickpuncher or whatever the fuck. But are you saying that if Community had just straight up parodied specific episodes/scenes of Doctor Who, that have been better? I just sort of took the episode as a parody of sci-fi/cons in general and that's part of why it didn't seem flat to me.
I do see your point about fleshing out the other characters, but I still think seeing Abed progress is important too. The thing is he's no longer the same robot from season three, and it's good to see progress for him as well as any other character's. It's been three episodes, and while they have all been about Abed, that's going to be changing soon, unless those next titles are wildly misleading. I feel like Shirley and Jeff could be getting the spotlight for the Germans' return, even if maybe it's not about Foosball. I mean paintball, I can totally buy a sequel/two-parter for that, but foosball? Then the one after looks like Jeff's episode.
okay but ALL the main characters have insecurities and flaws, and they are people that can be related to on some level, in some way. That's kind of the driving force of the show. They've all got unique problems. Honestly while I love them all (except Pierce in some of the later episodes) I personally relate very little to Jeff. there are just times when I'm almost unable to get through certain episodes because of how he behaves. You wanna call Abed a douche, okay, and I agree with you on that for the most part, but Jeff acts like that all the time, Pierce even more so. But the fact that I don't relate to characters doesn't mean I can't like them. I think Annie is someone I would really love to see get focus again because I find her more relatable than Jeff and yes, seeing her lose her shit like in the pen episode would be fantastic (but not like in the UN episode). If by the end of the season, none of the others get their proper screen time, then I'll concede that they didn't do as good of a job as they ought to have. Troy and Britta are probably second on my list because I still can't wrap my head around their relationship. Even though it was hinted at in season three, and possibly earlier if someone would like to point out evidence because I can't remember if there was much prior, it still feels really sudden. Shirley's got her new baby that could be a focus point in one episode. I'm currently looking suspiciously at yet another documentary-titled episode, but that aside, I think it's pretty vague as to what the distribution of screen time is going to look like by the end.
-
Unpopular opinion: 90% of the Abed-is-strange storyline was effectively dealt with in the third episode of the season, and Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas should have been the main culmination of that storyline. What we're getting in Season Four should have begun last year.
Abed just became low-hanging fruit for Harmon's meta- tendencies.
-
Abed seems to have gained self-confidence, or at least, he's more comfortable because he knows he has friends he can count on. I could be wrong but I feel as if the theme lately has been "how will X affect his relationship with Troy?" rather than look how socially awkward and weird Abed is. We kind of know that since the pillow civil war ended, he's probably not going to run into a similarly major conflict like that again. I can only assume he's kind of learned his lesson from that, otherwise wow. I'm wondering if there's going to be anything coming up that deals with his future film career, which was kind of a big deal in the third episode, but it rarely gets brought up. Isn't that the next big step for him? it's not exactly a conflict, but it'd be good to see everyone else other than Jeff and Britta pursuing their goals. By which I mean it seems like those two have gotten the most solid buildup for what they plan to do after graduation. I can scarcely even remember what Annie said she wanted to do.
-
We're getting ANOTHER documentary episode? I mean, I liked the two that we had, but… do we really need another? :\

http://thefutoncritic.com/listings/20130222nbc15/Why not? It's already been recycled once, the flashback episode was recycled, so was paintball.
This isn't a show that's afraid to do the same thing.

Its not even that its been recycled once, but TWICE. We've had 3 deocumentary styled episodes including the Pillows and Blankets episode. I thought they knew we were sick of em.

We've also had three paintball episodes, all brilliant. I've liked both documentary episodes so far, I'll probably like this one as well. Besides, it has to do with Changnesia. Every time I watch that trailer I just crack up at "Ooooh, bigger!". Chang's delivery there just cracks me up, and I have a feeling the episode will be dotted with those.

The first documentary episode is one of the best in the entire series, the second was great, and for some reason, fans loved the third one. Personally, I thought it was one of the absolute low points of the series, but hey, I was in the minority on that one, so I don't think most fans were "sick" of the concept.
At this point, it makes more sense to dip back in that well than some of the other repeated episodes, since that would make one ep per season.
BTW, I understand your point and probably agree with it. It's just that I also understand the rationale behind doing it again.

Pillows and Blankets is also a very different documentary style episode, and I assume this one will be more along the lines of Abed making his own documentary. Both of those episodes were great, so I don't see what all the fuss is about. And I agree tatermoog, if it was Pillows and Blankets you mean anyway, I didn't like that episode at all. In fact, the entirety of the second half of the third season was pretty… bad.

I wasn't fan of the Dean making a commercial one. And I wasn't a fan of Pillows and Blankets, I did enjoy the fist one though, personally.
-
The first one in the hospital was OK. Not my favorite but interesting. The Dean commercial one had some of the best lines/readings of the show imo. I loved Pillows and Blankets but wasn't a fan of the ending. I don't mind another documentary episode as long as the joke isn't "lol, we're doing another documentary episode"
-
It's not that I don't mind them doing another documentary (I don't consider the Pillows and Blankets episode when I talk about the documentary episodes). I loved both of them. My issue is with the fact that there are only thirteen episodes and instead of getting originals, we're just getting rehashes of oldies but goodies. I dunno, I don't dislike the current season but I wish it wasn't trying to scream "We're still Community! Look at all of the Community things we are doing!" every episode. I'm looking forward to Episode 5 though. I think that's the show's big chance to make or break the season for me.

Overally, pretty decent episode. It was nice to have an in school "normal" episode.
P.S. I hope the Germans disappear from the class like Rich did in Anthropology… or Jack Black in Spanish. Not a fan.
-
Decent episode, but there were three amazing jokes.
- "Burn Notice"
- "Arizona"
- Red Balloons
I am tired of the Dean's outfits at this point.
I loved that Todd came back. Also I love how Ken Jeong is playing Chang… I mean Kevin. Though I'm positive he remembers who he is and this is all part of the City College Dean's plan.
