you could say Penny Arcade was knocked the pitcher over, but it is the fact that the game is so good even in the alpha stage, that is what filled up the hype pitcher.
also it's the internet, if it is good, you will find out about it.
I had friends who've been playing this most of the summer, ranting and raving about it.

The game is awesome, EVEN on its alpha phase. I plan to buy it when i have the money, for now I'm already addicted just to the free version.
i haven't even played this yet (too many other games) but you know it's a sign of greatness when just watching the millions of youtube videos people are uploading and narrating is entertaining.

I bought this in August and I must say it's one of the best games I've ever played. Even with those graphics and the general lack of things to do.
It's 10 Euros. ~$13. I'll probably buy it pretty soon. I just need to recover from spending $1400 last week.
Edit: Okay, I bought it. Fell into a pit and was killed by a zombie in the first 10 minutes of playing. It's dark now and I built a small barrier that probably won't protect against anything.

This game is so fucking addicting. I've played this like 20 hours the past week.
Hard difficulty is fun.
What the fuck? I built a house, though it didn't have a roof, and something started shooting arrows through the gap in the ceiling. And killed me.
That was a skeleton. At nighttime monsters spawn and try to kill you in horrible ways. That's why you need to close off your house with a roof and a door, or build it in a cave and close it with a door.
Or you can turn the difficulty to peaceful. I do that for the sake of construction.

Nah, turning the difficulty to peaceful is cheating. Monsters and the adrenaline rush encountering them causes are part of the game. Although it is very annoying, dying only makes the gaming experience better. 
How do you build a roof?
There's a crouch/sneak button; hold it (while doing so you can't fall), walk to the edge of your wall, hover your mouse over the side of your top brick and attach a new brick there. Repeat until the whole roof is built.
Whoo, I finally found some diamond. Still don't know what to use it for, though. I think maybe a pick or some armor.
I heard the guy who made this already made a few million dollars off of it, and it's just the beta. Watched a few youtube vids (from X), very entertaining but not something I felt like particularly spending time on.

I bought and got my account for Minecraft like… many, many months ago. I was hearing a lot about it even then. It's definitely not new.
But it is very, very well put together and-- if you are of the right kind of mentality-- a very involving game. It's quite a lot of fun, in a slow, buildup kind of sense. In the right mind frame I can actually get very immersed in it.

I actually was looking for a thread here on Minecraft the other day, and voila here it is!
I've bought it already… Went to a scyscraper server and I made a structure that was "A homage to the human erectum", got severely punished by being demoted to spectator =( and that's pretty much my online experience with this game.
I'm wanting to build the capital of Iceland in single player but it's sooooo much work that I'm a bit scared of beginning.... the math and mapping of this project insanely boggles my mind.
But I will try to begin. Starting with my house I guess...*I bet I'll become a serious retard if I attempt this but well it's probably more fulfilling to do gigantic projects than to do well... something else?

This guy is my favourite minecrafter atm, he has made really amazing stuff in single player -_-
(you see in multiplayer, you can fly, have infinite blocks, smash things instantly etc according to server rules)
There's a variety of multiplayer servers that I've seen, including:
Skydive servers
Rollercoaster servers
Water slide servers
Build servers
Special project servers
and of course just personal servers.
Now, this game may not have new age graphics but it's an instant classic. It's steadily growing and hasn't even reached Beta stage. It costs 10 euros right now for a premium account (every update and expansion guaranteed)
I don't have a lot more to say about it… If you have an imagination and have a need to create stuff... This is a nice outlet. You can create pretty much everything if you can only think it up. That's the true beauty of this game, there's no quest or mission in it, it's pure sandbox.
I'm very fond of the current world my game is running in.
It's an oceanic world with a generous amount of small islands littered about, without any actual medium-sized landmasses period (as far as I've seen). When I realized how unique the world was compared to my previous experiences (which were all primarily large landmasses with beaches), I got pretty excited. I immediately looked for whichever island seemed furthest away from the others near my starting point. Once found, I made it my home, began construction of a tiny house, waited until nightfall, and initiated the first-few-day pattern of gameplay. Once stabilized, I began crafting large, elaborate bridges to connect the islands together.
It is far, far more satisfying than it should be. I'm slowly branching out across the islands, but I'm working on turning each one I come across into a more "civilized" looking, singular building before getting too far. It's giving me quite a nice goal, actually. I've been working on this world for about two weeks, on and off, now. It's actually starting to look very modern.
I haven't made up personal goals in a game in years. Not since I was a child. But Minecraft is just something else. My imagination has really caught on to it.
What to do when you can't think of anything useful to do in Minecraft?

I don't use any of the mods, mainly because I have no interest in them. I just like playing the game for what it is.
Me and my friend are currently working on making a full-scale One Piece world on one of our servers, which is going to include all the locations we've seen in One Piece so far (includes Skypiea and Fishman Island!).. aaaand it's going to take a long time xD

Oh man, that's a really useful mod, I can't even begin to tell you how many diamonds I've lost from dying way back in the beginning, I had several old home bases with loads of diamonds and gold in those chests and I couldn't even find my old bases. Thanks.

Yeah, same here. I've been wanting to play Minecraft again for a while, but since I don't have any servers I could play on with my friends it's been kinda dead on that front for long. If anyone was willing to host a server, I'd be there as well.
